The Retro-PES Corner

Just started playing PES17 on PS4 again for first time in a long time. Previously vanilla FIFA 14 was my GOAT, better than 16 imo. As no jerky legs, no AI pinball 1 touch passing around area all day etc.

Right now PES17 is better than FIFA 14 and 16 imo. 14 has better inertia and more interesting shooting and variety in shooting, but PES17's AI, ppff, it wipes the floor with FIFA 14 and 16, they play and make choices very similar to a top level human. And you don't need mods or sliders for anything as the game still looks good and the ball moves realistically and most satisfyingly of all, you can score goals from all ranges and you really feel the force and speed of the shots when you smash them. There is build up play, fouls, aggressive AI when they see you may break through their press etc.

I play on the highest difficulty, advanced through balls and shooting and 1 off manual passing. Just to carve open a good chance is a fucking slog against a decent team and I LOVE that.

I can defend well, but AI are always dangerous and unpredictable. I just played Germany with me as England in Master League and there were very few chances the whole game for either team, but I managed to look around the box and saw a slither of space for Kane in the box, I quickly turned and shot bottom corner to grab a late goal in off the post, felt amazing.

A fantastic game and one I don't think you guys speak highly of enough.

PES 2017 is my favorite football game, maybe ever. :)
Perhaps my favorite game period.

I play the PC version, with Smoke Patch, PA1, with the following gameplay configuration.. I've written extensively about PES 2017 in the PC discussion thread, on how I love its respect for stats, its awesome vanilla gameplay, its "one more match feeling", etc.. so I won't extend myself here. But suffice to say, in the 30+ football games that I've played, PES 2017 has given me the most immersive, the best overall experience.

So yeah, heavily underappreciated like you mention, @Pagi84 :TU:

Damn. I have to try the PC patch and configuration you use then!

I wish I can get that feeling from PES 17. I have it on my PC.....Its just idk...the way players are, the way they are built and move just feels off....ball physics are also off...I play FK 24 with PES 21 gameplay switcher and a few gameplay mods...honestly PES 21 is so much better.

The game that beats them ALL in my opion is WE9LE with exogenesis patch

Oh PES17.

I'm Southampton in Master League with van Dijk and Mane :) As they haven't gone to Liverpool yet. I'm away at Anfield, early in the season, on the hunt for top 4.

It's a wet and intense Anfield. And it feels intense, whenever I try and play they hound me! As soon as I try and pass to my wingers they are literally right behind me, its' so awesome, as you feel it is how Liverpool would be IRL at home.

The wet pitch has a very noticeable effect on the ball movement and players losing balance etc, very cool.

They actively are targeting my star guy Sane who somehow left City for Southampton. Liverpool destroy my main guy Sane, with two yellows in just 5 min game time, not real time. They kept fouling him when he was about to burst away, he even had to go off for treatment after a THIRD foul on him. Tell me a game that has this ruthless an AI? Soon after Henderson gets a third yellow for fouling my other winger Mane.

I had barely any chances all game, they really put me off my stride.

Watch the short video to see the goal they scored to win 1-0, cool 1st touch by Sturridge, don't think seen before, but believable considering quality of player and where ball was.

Yeah thatĀ“s my corner. PES 17 was very good.

To serve my own nostalic, i am going to make my PES-ALL-Times Review

ISS on Nintendo. Best game of an era. Not today, thought, pure nostalgia.

PES 3, first game to bring PES on PC.
PES 6, best game of an era.

PES 2008 new naming, with PES 13 being the pinacle of that engine.

PES 14 started the era where for the first time, player and ball are calculated seperatly on the Fox Engine.
PES 15 improved it. PES 16 was very fast, too fast for online play IMO, but great for vs. CPU.
PES 17 improved defending and goalkeeper. Played it online, fun times.
PES 18 Balanced the gameplay, every strategy equal and valid. My personal favorit soccer game.
PES 19 some changes, not bad either.

eFootball PES 2020 to season update, more realistic but no longer so responsive.

eFootball 2025, only "PES" with active server. But i prefere the good gameplay over any current game with online server, including FIFA / EA FC 25.

Got some of the old games installed playing with friends using online tools, you just need to join my pc with your controler and play PES 18 etc, as if localy here. If you donĀ“t mind joining, sent me a PM.

Does anyone have the original PES 2013 ISO for PC with all the official updates to be made available? The links on archive.org are down and are not expected to return, does anyone know alternatives?

Does anybody play J-League Winning Eleven 2009 Club Championship

I played 2007 and 2008 and 2010....but 2009 seems to have much better ball physics and AI is very hard, like pes 2008 ps2.

And Master League is amazing, complete Uefa competitions with 32 teams, Fifa World Club competition...and Uefa club ranking with more then 160 teams...I think that J-League WE Club Championship have the best and most complete Master League from all versions.

Guys, I'm having quite a persistent issue with PES 2010 Smoke Patch..
I want to play with Sheffield Wednesday, but the kits don't correspond to the team.

View attachment 308050

As you guys can see, the patch comes with its own kitserver, GDB, and map.. And the folder name is correct in the text file, but the kits are completely off.

Wonder if there's a solution to this issue. I've tried detaching and reattaching kitserver, and reinstalling the patch as well, to no avail.
Anyway, any help would be appreciated!
Hello friend.
I am not aware of this patch. But, check if there is a selector in the Smoke Patch. For example, activate to enable the Championship. In PESEdit it works like this.

I'll try to explain how this works in PESEdit "but it's quite complex"
Sheffield Wednesday's ID is 4069. No, it's not his. It's AJ Auxerre. Because the editors team made a link. I believe it's to have more slots.
When you activate the selector, Turn on 2.
Ok, AJ Auxerre will be enabled. When you activate the Championchip, Sheffield Wednesday will be enabled.

Smoke Patch probably uses the same methodology. There are two teams using ID 293...

Thanks a lot for this man! :TU:

I ended up editing a different team (Persepolis, in other teams) and pasting the kits in the appropriate folder!
Transferred all of Sheffield Wednesday's players, assigned kits, colors, chants, and changed the name of the team, also badges, etc..
Good thing that ML allows to replace teams, that way I could put my freshly edited team in the Championship!
But this is a great solution.. I will definitely use it next time i start up a campaign!! :BSCARF:

So, I was testing AI difficulty in a lot of versions of Pes/We lately just to see who have the hardest AI gameplay.

As a hardcore Pes 4/5/6 and We 7/8/9 gamer for PC versions, I switched to Pes 2008/We 2008 and J.League CC version 2009 for Ps2 version...it seems that Konami on 2008 made drastic change in AI intelligence, that is why pes 2008/we 2008/J.League We CC 2009 AI is so much harder then earlier series like pes5 and pes6.

""PES 2008 features a brand new intelligence system, called Teamvision, that adapts and reacts to players own gameplay styles to ensure that the computer controlled opponents are always challenging and forcing the player to think and chance their style of play to avoid being out-thought by the game. It learns counter attacks that target your weaknesses and look to exploit any repetitive tactics players use. Defenders react better to danger, closing down the ball and charging at shots and the goalkeepers hold shots that are closer to them as well. Teammates make more intelligent runs into space and the close control has been sharpened to ensure quick and fluid passing and speedy attacks can be built."

I thought I would post this on here rather than the FC25 thread in case I get loads of abuse :D

I have not played FC25 but having read a lot of positives I was thinking about getting it. But then I watched a youtuber playing Career Mode and I have to say that the game looks crap.

I cannot put my finger on it but it could be because it seems that every attack leads to a shot and a GK fist pump (I hate those so much).

Playing PES2008 (and I am sure other retro PES too) there are matches with hardly any shots. I was playing Middlesbrough v Everton the other day in ML and there were no half time highlights. I loved it!

Think I will save my money and my time :D

The latest FIFAĀ“s / EA FCĀ“s are not for me. The gameplay is a random generator, like the ultimats packs. Addiction yes, fun no.

When it comes to the Pro Evolution series, there are many good trailers, like PES 16, but the one that represents pro evo the most, to me is this one:

Retro games like pes4/5/6 pc and we8/9/9le pc and pes2008/we2008 ps2, they have that something about them that you really enjoy.
Every game is interesting, and just playing them is fun and great.

I play FC25, win a game, score a goal, and nothing....no emotions....its just not like older pes/we games. They have that something.

You are so right! And even now, I am still seeing things happen for the first time and I also see things maybe once every year. For example, hitting the post and rolling along the line and then hitting the other post, some on here may have never experienced that in PES yet, but I have. But the point is I may never see something like that again. That is just one example but there are so many.

One time I came from behind against the CPU to be leading 2-1 and then shortly afterwards the CPU hacked my player down and got sent off. Maybe a coincidence but in my mind I was thinking that it retaliated which may have been related to the Mentality stat. Great stuff.

Another thing about FC25 and previous FIFAā€™s, in fact even the newer PESā€™ I find that they try to show off that some of their players have custom moves etcā€¦ As mentioned earlier I donā€™t play the new games but watching the videos, that is what it looks like. Some players doing certain dribbles, to ā€showā€œ that it is realistic rather than because it fits in with how the match is playing out.

It is hard for me to explain what I am getting at, maybe only I understand. But to some it up, I watched a game of FC25 yesterday and a player was offside. That triggered a camera movement and then all these fancy pants graphics, then colour changes etc just to show that the player is offside. Just do what retro PES do and blow the whistle, show the quick line and move on, itā€™s a game of football not theatre! :D

Rant over.

I've been playing some FC25. The sim setting is a great addition, addressing the speed and flow of the game for the better but I'm still finding it hard to take to.

It might sound like a fringe point, but the agility of loading up and getting onto the pitch in the older games is a huge plus. Fucking hell the menus in FC25, especially in Career Mode. In the time it takes me to switch on my Xbox to kicking a virtual ball I'm drained. eFootball also suffers from this problem. Even though there's fuck all to do, you still have to wade through a sea of notifications. If the gameplay in FC25 was shit hot I wouldn't mind so much but... it's not. Moving in the right direction though.

Yeah this frustrates me too. I love the simple snappy menus of the older games, I don't need a flashy menu with a transition on every screen and a fully rendered arena with a player pose, it looks nice the first time but after a while it becomes and inconvenience.

FIFA 06 and onwards on the old gen consoles had some of the most snappiest menus in a fifa game. It was so quick and easy to just start a match. I also preferred the list menu over the tile system on modern games that started with FIFA 14. It's just faster that way.

I just love how great the grass looks in pes 08. Extremely satisfying.

I love how this thread has reactivated all of a sudden! :) Love to see how the retro PES are getting so much recognition!

Personally, I'm in no rush to get FC25 (will probably get it on discount/sale).. That's the great thing about football games, there are so many editions to re-discover and enjoy, it's an entire repository that can keep you completely immersed for a long, long time.. Every time I fire up an old PES, it's like a treasure trove waiting to be unearthed, each edition is so different and has its own charm and unique characteristics!

As for now, I am really enjoying PES 2010 PC with smoke patch, in my Sheffield Wednesday save! :BSCARF:

Just played PES 13 vs. Human. ItĀ“s a great experience, better then Pes 13 vs. AI or coop.
Also PES 18 in coop vs. AI is a wonderfull experience.
Are there fan server for PES 13 / 17 / 18?

Yeah 2008 is one of my favourite looking games once you got it on PC in 4K, it's stylised visuals have a charm and they finally started putting the work in on the turf and crowd models.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. When you have a break from the retro games and cycle through them again, they're so refreshing and you really appreciate the things they did so well.

There were so many neat presentation improvements in this game. Kids entering during match intro, 3D detailed crowds closeup. Even during non closeups on crowds, the generic crowds look greatly detailed.

I also love how the shirts get pulled and untucked throughout the match. Makes the whole thing more believable.

The overall match presentation looks a lot better than FIFA 08 next gen (which barely had any cutscenes and presentation felt shallow). The cutscenes looked like it was from actual live broadcast.

Also these games were really optimized despite being next gen ports on pc. You could run these games on igpus of the time. Really showed how EA was full of shit while justifying old gen ports on pc back in the day.

Here's something that I found really interesting..

I remember when I played PES 2010 for the first time, a few years ago, I found Top Player a bit on the easy side. I remember picking a midtable Premiership team and I was winning most of my matches with more ease than in other editions..

So a few years passed, and I decided to pick up PES 2010 again (with smoke patch).. And immediately applied a gameplay mod (Top Player), supposedly to make the game harder.. And I had fun for a few matches, until I found a few features in the mod where I actually preferred some vanilla physics and reactions.

Anyway, I decided to go back to the vanilla game.. Using Top Player.. And suddenly, I found it really hard! Like uncommonly hard, which was detracting from my enjoyment! The CPU dispossessing me all the time, not letting me score, being lethal with their headers and tiki-taka, etc.. Is this the same game I played a few years ago?

And so I decided to try Professional, Vanilla game and interestingly.. I found that for PES 2010, I enjoyed it more.

So scratching my head, I couldn't figure out why I had found PES 2010 easy the first time, and hard this time.. (if anything, maybe I haven't gotten better at playing PES, but at least I don't think I've gotten worse after playing almost every week hahah)..

So then, I decided to check the exeI Turns out I am playing with 1.00 exe, as opposed to 1.03 (which is what I was playing in before, I believe with PESEdit patch, or probably TPS patch). I am convinced now, after a lot of testing, that 1.00 exe is much tougher than 1.03! (It may also be a Smoke Patch thing)!

Anyway, just wanted to share my "eureka" moment.. Hahah.. it might be a placebo effect, but I will stick to Professional from now on in PES 2010! (Exe 1.00 SP patch). Here are a couple of videos of two professional level matches! Very few shots attempted, and on this level, I felt like the CPU played the most human-like, much more than in Top Player! (less tiki-taka, and more time to think in spaces). One loss and one win, I thoroughly enjoyed it! (playing with speeder 0.93)

tagging my friend @Madmac79 as he might be interested in this! :TU:

EDIT: After many more matches. switching between TP/Professional ATM, trying to find the perfect balance!
