Question: if you have a crucial pen in PES, do you take the shitebag option and go low, down the middle?
Me? 100% yes.
I love questions like these, it's fun to see everyone's approach to things and how they like to play.
Answering the question, how I take crucial penalties in PES depends on 2 key factors, and both are relative to the specific title that I'm playing:
1. How comfortable I feel with the penalty system.
2. What are the types of shots that I recognize as most efficient.
In PES2010/PES2011 I struggled when taking penalties, they were too sensible, and the camera when taking one during the match was awkward, at least in shootouts it was behind the player, but the sensitivity was still there, in these games I'd just tap the button to shoot and hope that the keeper would dive to either the left or the right.
PES2012/PES2013 fixed the camera issue and also added a power bar, but while I could take penalties with more ease in them, I felt that they'd still go wide sometimes, and when they didn't the goalkeeper seemed to have a good chance of catching them, so here I'd also go for the middle, but with the bar filled up just over the halfway point, it's very efficient because the goalkeeper usually dives to one side or the other, and when he does stay in the middle it still has a good chance of going in because the shot usually doesn't stay 100% centered, it goes a little bit to the left or right.
PES2015 had that aiming cursor that was introduced in the previous title, and has been a staple in every FOX Engine PES, here I felt very comfortable aiming for the sides because of this cursor, so I stopped taking them in the middle. With time I also realized that if I placed the cursor at the top corner and tapped the shoot button, while also holding the bumpers so it's a chip, it'd usually go in, so that's how I took them here.
PES2018 was still the same system, but my method seemed to be less efficient since the goalkeepers could now dive pretty high with some terrible animations, it's like they actually fly, either way I had to take them differently, so I finally started taking penalties how I like them the most in real life, low to the sides and with full power! It's very satisfying and also efficient, especially when it's close to the post.
I've also downloaded PES2021 Lite and had a couple of shootouts at myClub against the CPU, here my method is the same method I had in FIFA19, just do whatever comes to mind at the time of taking the penalty because the goalkeeper will probably save it anyway regardless of how I shoot it, it feels somewhat robotic at times, so now I don't really have a method.
