The Retro-PES Corner

I seem to recall having a better time with PES 2015 on the PS3 than those I knew who had jumped to the PS4 that year. Option files were not a thing for the PS4 version I think but I remember having a great time with the game overall without a few of the issues being mentioned on what was then next-gen.

Generally, it's all the more noticable now just how badly the fanbase was treated from PES 2014 onwards. Looking back through these 'retro' games to play as an alternative is a mismatch of missed opportunity, lost features, lazy design and poorly implemented AI.

The PS2 era had it's issues too of course but the fundamentals of solid, challenging gameplay that didn't leave you feeling cheated or just flat was always there...and still is.
Did / do you have an option file for the PS3 version?

restarted the ML this time with valenciennes, 5* is too much for me at least right now, i was leading the table after a couple of matches but in foresight decided to go one back to 4*, the AI is just so calm on the ball and dribbles well i would have been totally outplayed vs better teams

re-did the leagues, makes more sense now, promotion is to some sort of franco/benelux/north league mix + bayern, they have lots of north european clubs in for some reason so i used it, all in D2

also just noticed the second match this time around the att/def individual player settings, theyre in the editor and L2/R2 switches to them, i thought at first theyre not in the game, typical konami :))

really like the AI, there is a sense of build-up, playing back, changeovers, runs on the ball, lots of variety, even the passing...once there was a wait till a teammate runs in behind and pass the ball moment, a bit like pirlo -> grosso WC 06 in the semi against germany in overtime, i was really baffled, great stuff

right now id put the AI second or tied first spot with PES3, certainly top 3 with PES4, cant say much about 2012 and 2013 did not play them enough (and most the titles post 2015)

I've always been of the opinion, when it comes to PS2 penalties, that "it's not me, it's you".

For all my love for the games, the penalty system stinks. With that level of randomness, I'm playing it safe!

The bad thing of going low to the middle, making your GK take the pen, imagine if the other team's keeper saves it.

Then a very unlucky and awful counter attack could happen and result in the other team having the open net to themselves, and make me sob.

speaking of penalties, the 2008 ones are rigged, missed two first cup match (one flat center), one was last man keeper foul, just yellow card, but this stuff is pes, doesnt really matter what title, still won 7:1 or so, malhaerbe caen i think, very agressive offside trap they even stood in my half most the time, crazy game

install pes 2008 and play caen you will be surprised :TU:i draw them 2:2 earlier in the league, so that was part of the good result, they did not change of course

the dribbling in this game is super basic, the right stick stuff is not really good or effective, you have the left stick diagonal for the body fint and the fake cross/shot and thats it, so i try to use speed changes and R2 slow down etc and it looks really nice sending the players with their inertia, this title nails the basics really well, some of the one touch passes look really good and varied in how they behave physic wise too, still no keeper mistake ala joe hart "soft hands" resulting in a goal here, had a few moments though, but they still feel sharper, great saves, i dont know how and why they butchered the two follow up titles in so many regards, the engine must have been truly problematic to push

ps below similar threads "Ridiculous Ai penalty saves"...
yep thats konami, once a script works, there to stay

The thing with SM Caen, is that KONAMI always overrated - in a hidden way - newly promoted teams, I don't know but I always feel that 60 rated wingers from these teams could just dance around your defense until you release your anger with the circle button.
I can't comment on penalties because I did not have any lol

i remember a friend on 2009 or 10 i think in online mode on pc here, he did not play 1v1 much, just coop, he at some point took either caen or one other "oceanic" :DD looking team and went on a huge winning streak and reached higher score than i had, i played 1v1 on the side with mainly 3* rated teams additionally to coop, so yes there is a certain secret sauce there for sure..

ps where did belhanda play around those years? total mind slip the club name

Or Castolo being captive in a cage! :D

This picture is when I started to see Konami was lying to me.
It appeared in every magazine like it was game footage, but in the game I only saw it in that little window on the Master League menu. That's false advertising! Those cheap bastards should be sued for crushing my dreams! xP

Still hooked on PES 5. It’s a masterpiece.

In my ML save I was playing v Wigan Athletic and they were fouling the hell out of me ALL match. The CPU had a man sent off in the first 30 minutes and then quickly made substitutions and changed formation and tactics.

This game, man. It keeps surprising me all these years later. Why/how did Konami spectacularly fuck this beloved series up so badly? They only had to build on PES 5 but they just lost their way so dramatically.

I know some people enjoy PES 2008 and PES 2012 etc but for me, PES never reached the heights of PES 5 again from a gameplay, tactical and AI perspective.

After PES 5 the series went downhill, slowly but surely. Some will argue PES 6 also stood the test of time but that game is too easy. It boggles the mind to this day why it only went up to Top Player?!

Edit: PES 3 is also a masterpiece. Had to mention that somewhere. Incredible game and still plays well today.

I knew I was right haha, it is so strange that I also played leagues modes from PES 2011-2012-2013 with these teams and I did very well in terms of finishing top table.

Belhanda is a Montpellier Hérault graduate. The same team who won the Ligue 1 title in 2012 and he was involved
For the record though, I like the fact that french teams are named after the city and the province

I always choose an angle on penalties. Well, in 95% of times at least. Besides I'm sure I had central shots saved somewhere in the saga.

Personally I don't think it's perfect, but i like PS2 classic system for pens. Even if only for the crazy things that happened in old days, in multi matches at home. They almost ended friendships :D

Yeah it was alright if you were dicking about with your mates. In a heated Master League, though, I'm playing the system!

Anyone that has mastered the Penalty Kick system in PES 2011 (next gen)..... Still asking in 2021.

Still can't get over that from my YouTube penalty series. Need the steady hand and delicate touch of a safe-breaker to score.

I mostly go top-right with my pens in PS2 era PES. I love the simplicity of that system.

PES 2011's penalty system one of the oddities of PES down the years. That said, there's something admirable in the way they tried to do something different with it. I still forget the stick/button combo whenever I go back to that game.

Agree. Simplicity is what (for me) has been missing in football game titles for a long time.

Take modern-day FIFA for example. The free-kick system is HIDEOUS. I don't just dislike it, I LOATHE it. Developers feel that they need to come up with complex stuff to keep the series 'fresh'. No, just tweak the good stuff!

Give the keeper the eyes and Panenka.

My penalties down the middle always seem to get saved, I usually go to one of the corners.

I find they're rarely saved and - if they are - most of the time you'll get an easy rebound.

I'd do differently if they were based on my or my player's skill level. To be honest I don't think there have been many great penalty systems over the gaming years, with the exception of peak PS3 FIFA.

Edit: I feel bad slating my beloved, so I'll temper it by saying the free kick system is wonderful in PS2 PES. Simple but without being frustratingly random.

And an addition following @Mikhail's post - FIFA's systems now are unbelievably bad. Also in peak FIFA, the free kick system was pretty simple and excellent. Line it up, set your power, move the left stick to determine loft and spin. Why anyone would think what they did constitutes an upgrade I'll never know.

Yeah that method (first introduced with the 2010 World Cup game, what a game that was) was great.

I'd also agree to say it's still the best penalty system we've ever had over all these years.
It took into account user input in both strength and position, player's composure (you had to start filling the bar when the composure meter was green otherwise you'd miss/slip) and the taker's penalty skills (the "green spot" on the composure bar was bigger with better players).

Wonderful.

Yeah to be fair I'm probably thinking of the one's I take down the middle in the shootouts.

Free kicks direct shooting wise were ok in PES but I always found the set piece free kicks of that time mostly awful. Unless it was a free kick out wide level with the area there never seemed to be anyone to aim for, they'd make that initial run then all edge back out and you'd have to wait and hope one of them made another run.
