The Retro-PES Corner

I JUST noticed a small detail on the late era PS2 PES games... Konami kept improving the graphics wherever they could.

I thought the horrible crowd texture in PES 6 and 2008 was kept untouched until the last entry, because the PS2 was not capable of more. But looking at videos of PES 2010, they put the effort to fix it, to make it as good as PES 3/4 again.

Also, in PES 2011 onwards, they upgraded the crowd texture to a higher quality version. And, they managed to backport some stadiums like Wembley, Stade de France or Estadio da Luz.

How did I notice this NOW, 10 years later? I feel like an idiot lol.

Well, now I want to play one of these games! Which one (from PES 2009 to 2014 PS2) is the best, gameplay-wise?

Yes, it's a slower approach, less dynamic and fast, perhaps more "sim" approach than the others versions.
People should try it, it's a good "alternative" let's say, and graphically different. On my top 3 or 4 PES/WE.
After PES 2008 and PES5, i would loved to edit that one, same process : summer edition with missing transfers and kits.

Ah yes @marqisspes6 i found a way to edit PES 2008 or any other PES hidden player, with EPB Biazotto tool. Just need to replace the "unnamed.bin" from PES 2014, and it open the database. Got a YT vid if you're interested but i don't think lol. WE9 got TONS of Asian NT, if not all Asian NT hidden... PES 6 got a pretty low number of hidden team in comparison to others PES/WE.

PES5 don't have it (fortunately, it's work in more if you want something completely edited and real).

I'll repost the version as i translated a lot of teams names for NT Hidden and AFC Hidden for J-League version (JL2008, JL2007, JL2009 if i remember well) etc.

with we9 you mean the japanese ps2 version? on pes5 i saw a file that it should be the hidden national teams but it was completely empty sadly

Yes, and it would be better with at least PES 6 teams. Plus it was the World Cup year (Season 05-06 > WC 2006...)
But on WE9 there's not a lot of European teams, perhaps not even one. But Asian yes, and one or two North American and African if i remember.
I didn't translated all on that game + It's too much to do just for one mode not so much interesting (Japan Campaign) but just copy paste on excel the japanese name an you got the country related.

Edit:
From PES 2008 to 2014 those countries appears in Euro, American, Africa and Asian cup, if you do random or you can also choose them as participants. So it's more annoying to have them fakes (with fakes players)

I'm currently playing PES 2011 on PS2 having picked it up cheap a while back.

As you say, these last PESes of the PS2 generation got a lot of time and attention given how most had moved on to the PS3 or 360.

PES 2011 certainly has vastly improved graphics. The passing is similar to PES 5 and the AI on Top Player is enjoyably ruthless. There's also all the licences and Master League extras the PS3 version had. And it has bulgy nets!

I don't know how 2012, 13 or 14 play on PS2 but if they're anything like 2011, I'll be looking out for them to add to my 'lost' era of PES collection.

The best is PES 2014. I tried all the others (2009 to 2013) and on the pitch they're all similar in fact.
Only PES 2014 was special. And i retried it, it's probably the slower paced version.
The ball physic is very different. Especially on passing (or passing is different, simply). It's like the ball slow down much more like if the grass was settled on high.

Edit:
I ain't sure but it looks like players are smaller to make the pitch bigger... Needs a specialist here but i felt more distance between player than in every PES from the 1st to 2008.

Are you playing via emulation? I'm always loath to recommend particular games - the beauty of emulation is that you can download them all and give them all a go with no need to make the choice. 😄

Yeah, what a surprise when I found these late PES games added real currency in ML, sponsors, 20 team leagues, staff upgrades to match the PS3 version. Wow!

I wondered why did I waste time playing the PS3/PC versions back then when I could just enjoy these ones… sigh

Guys, I'd like to play a first long-term Master League in PES 6 (I've only played several seasons of League mode), so I'd like to ask a question that perhaps has been answered already.. (this thread is huge, lol).

How do regens work in PES 6? Are random "Konami" youth players created as the older players retire? Do the retired players come back like in later PES insatllments? How are squads renovated/modified accross a lot of seasons (say 5 to 10 seasons)? Thanks a lot in advance. :TU:

EDIT: I'm talking about the PC version. :)

PS2 or PC are the same ;) (even X360 system, but without a full edit mode, and it's the best version with different gameplay and graphisms :( )
Well, there's both : regens from olders players and newcomers invented. They're in the editor named "ML Youth" in the selector.
Some are used for replacing the youth in your team, others to add some new U18 signing in some teams.

To me... Yes. More PES-ish let's say, but with tactical defending.

I don't like FIFA 16 through : too much goal from long shoot, players with no weight etc.
That's why i don't even through to recommand it lol. Same as PES 2013 : those games are similar in the feeling.
In some words : i found IGNITE is shitty to represent weight, movement, etc., the ref with PES 2013 is like they "streched" IGNITE to create a fake Inertia sensation.

On FIFA 14 (PC/PS3, i think PS4 is Ignite graphics only) you can feel the players movements, different depending the position and speed etc. BUT naturally.
Also, smaller pitch etc.

But that's my preference... And i mentioned it because you probably played a bit too much FIFA 16 and want something new right? Or not?
If not and you like it, run on it.

Also, i don't feel the one dimensional you mention. There's so much physical algorithms that i feel that everything i do is different...

One thing you don't have in Fifa as they removed weight-shift, inertia, ball are too small etc. well i liked a bit the 16 and 17 but don't like any of PS4 Fifa. Didn't tried the 14.

Fifa is 3 dimensional for you, the pitch is bigger etc. but it's still shit to me as the results of animations seems all the same, and everything depending on stats like PES PS2. Tried the 20 and was pissed to have spend that much money.

Edit: Yes the issue about AI is there's a lot of same composition, without tactical advanced stuffs on it. Also, you can really feal what the AI is capable when you play agaisn't well known teams with all their player with a CPU style + global playing style. The game miss a bit too much of personalisation. AND when you play, it's you who have to do everything. Also the CPU will plays differently if you varies your game (that's always what i did, so never got too much issues with CPU. More issues is about the challenge i never got until 2021 version and a bit 2019)
The issue for in pes is that the ai will always look to shoot the ball in 1 on 1 the same exact place every single time, so in a 1 on 1 they will always look for bottom corner, they will never shoot on the near post, and the ball is always low bottom corner, never high shot , also in fifa, u get all those random penalty area and goalmouth scrambles, these used to happen on pes4 5 and 6, but not anymore, ever since pes 2016, there s never really randomness inside the area....that s what is missing to make PES 2021 the best football game in a long time..

Is
I made the same error, even when i saw vids and trough "it's super fast, there's no inertia, no defense, no midfield" etc.
But people saying that "it's miles away from PES 2021" at the launch, due to the surprise effect regarding animations etc (i understand)...

That makes me laugh now, it's the shittiest football game i ever played. It's not even better than PES 15 or 17, or the awful FIFA 15 (as i kinda hate that game : too easy to do whatever you want).

Well, try PES 2008 PS2 if you want more retro stuffs (to me and another member the best PS2 PES ever), and PES 2011, or if you got FIFA 14 PC or PS4.

But i've read some of your comments, you're the kind of guy which is quickly bored of a game so it's kinda hard lol. Try all the game you can bro, switch.
Avoid PES 4, 6, all PS2 version from 2009 to 2013 (2014 is good), and on PC FIFA 12. The 11 on PC is kinda like FIFA 10 on PS3 debbuged : but FIFA 10 was an awesome game. FIFA 11 PS3 was just the best of all the series from that era, with the 14.
Pes 2011 good? On pc? Is it great like pes 5 and 6?

Pes 2011 good? On pc? Is it great like pes 5 and 6?

To me it's pretty good yes. Better with the analog as they're +- 32 directions : i checked with slow/normal dribbling. On PS3 as the D-pad was special you could've move to 16 directions only with the D-pad impulsion.

It's physically more logic than PES 2013 (players got weight and ball too...) and players are more keeping their positions, less variety but more solid overall, and authentic let's say. PES 2012 and 2013 streched the engine if you know what i mean, adding fake physics for some movements i mean, manually but the result is not better at all.

Also the last game with Seabass as main director. But remember that it's a 12 years old game. Otherwhise it's my favourite on PS3 no contest.

There's a recent patch based on the previous season with very good stats on it (made by an ex PSD guy and he did some adjustments), with some errors in formations (better using PESEDIT or that one with "automatic formation" if you have time to edit. Not all teams suffers from that : you just have to check players positions if it's fit. Also, there's 2 sections with historical teams (Juve 2005-06 , Milan too, Manchester 02-03 etc)

Note :The patch is standalone like PES 6 from Sany. You can install a second PES 2011 version ;)

https://evoweb.uk/threads/pes-2011-psd-patch-2021-2022-season.90931/

If you want too the real 2010-11 season, the best of all is that PESEDIT patch version 2.2.0 + 2.2.1 fix (it's better for ML, but the one above is fun as you got PES 1 to PES 5 teams playable on a special section : good for a big "all stars" cup or league).
There's several changes in stats, but for every players and it's OK : that game is kinda old so it's tolerable / a bit less when i ddl it and reset players stats to their real Konami's standards 😅
The 4.0 was made from debut september, with 2012-13 season. But the 2010-11 database is more accurate to me / It's easy to found on that website mate

PES 2014 is very good - there is 2022/23 season patch by JrPlay available:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/ta6kcly4phdug4p/pes23_octobers.7z/file

There are some bugs here and there, but he has done a good job with the kits, faces and has even integrated the Peter Drury/Jim Beglin commentary with call names.

Here is a YouTube preview:

The patch is good overall but some stuffs tilted me, especially on players stats.
Messi at his age is like a better Maradona version. Some players got the same issue with balance took from PES PS4 which is not really compatible.
A small player with 90 in balance is unmovable. But a tall one got a higher barycentre so he's more subject to fall... The reason why tall player got high stats in old Balance (mix with physical contact and balance, but more physical contact at an non exhaustive 70%, don't take it as a real number)... And smaller players got big max 85 like Messi at his prime (i think he was the higher from 170cm to 175 to have that value), so a 85 for a 170 cm player is kinda like a 95-97 for a 195 cm player.

i want a game that is good by today standards, so not to miss out on gameplay aspects, does pes 2011 possess all the qualities of original pes 5 and 6?

Today standard lol, Football games are dead.

Didn't read that question : to me yeah it's even better than PES 6 : i don't like that game. Too offensive based, fast paced and some bugs here and there.
PES 5 level... I tend to say yes, but for my own preferences. My favourite PES on PS2 is J-League 2008 and PES/WE 2008. So much variety, better ball physics than PES 5, more balanced than the 6 but you keep the good feeling of that game (in slower) etc.

Just forget then, but try at least. I recommand you to buy FIFA 14 but PS4 version, you can got it at a very low price. It's miles ahead current Fifas, and you should like it better than PES 21 (not my case : i like both and don't want to make a top)

Yes! I don’t have a gaming PC anymore, and resorted to my PS4 and PS5 for everything, but I discovered a nice PS2 emulator for my M1 Mac mini, and it works pretty well.

In just a week I scored some nice goals (and some from the CPU) that I want to share!

PS2 PES games, they are outdated, yeah, but they were made with effort and love, and it shows in every detail of their gameplay.

I got fifa 14 pc version, so do i need to revert to sliders? Or just default gameplay? Any next gen net mods?

@Hatrickhero Hey man, with 14 on PC, I suggest using this version of the exe and after that, sliders are more or less personal taste and don't require a whole lot of moving around. I like to bump up marking and GKs to 60, but that's by no means in stone and just gives me a little bit of a buffer from shots-save-rebound-scores goals that I think FIFA has tended to suffer from like it's a hockey game.

I also have FIFA 14 on PC, using a version of moddingway patch (I believe it is the one right before the World Cup 2018), and quite enjoying it so far.. Anyway this is the retro PES corner but just here to say that this is quite a good game.

Back to PES, @Hatrickhero I'd have to agree with @vialli82 in saying that PES 2011 is a solid installment. I've played it quite a bit and think it's the most enjoyable out of the trilogy 2011-2013. There are even some nice camera mods available for it if you'd like a more zoomed out view, but really what makes it cool is the gameplay. You have to be quite patient in the build-up and it adds to realism. One thing I think it could use some improvement are the crowd animations but hey you can't have everythiing lol. I like playing with PESEdit patch, it has some nice second divisions too in Europe, and a bunch of South American teams.

Does anyone know if you can change the language of the menus in Winning Eleven 2010 Aoki Samurai No Chousen for PS3 to English? I just got a copy of it and the 2014 version today (which does let you choose English) but I can't seem to find the option.

It's my first time trying Winning Eleven having played PES since ISS Pro Evo so sorry if the answer is obvious!

I got it since a long time, but i don't know if i may apply it to another patch. Never really tried as i through everything was fine.
Also the teams in World/Japan Challenge should have their fakes names, but at least it's in english. But it's a first. And he did it recently i think, he made a comeback lol.

Got one with all kits (WC 2006 edition, based on 3.5 Fernando) but i keep the WE9 standard season as 03-04 was a good one, with an option file, there's no face added or changed so.

Only with a patch, i don't even know if it exist, sorry bro. Especially if it's the PS3 version, but that one is rare. I ddl it on PS2 just for the collection.

Unfortunately, the translator made some transfert and changed the db of the game

View attachment 180271
That's why i always, well for team i need to build my O.F. :

1st make an Option file with the original game. Export the file.
2nd Put the original japanese O.F. and reset names, not all names are in japanese (sometimes he may changes stats, i hate it)

Also about your question about WE10, there's one Spanish teams with 4 removed players on the WE10 translated version. Because they left on July or whatever. They should understand that we just want authentic databases or what's the point...

Can I have it ?
Sorry : it's the V4 : very recent too. I through it was the very final... But i will apply that one.

Thanks i will try to ddl it and apply. Just ddl the ZIP file from here and apply on a WE10 Jap original.
If you don't have it, i'll upload for you mate.

Edit: i found a Korea version of WE9 here. I don't know what's the difference : probably the same but with Korea challenge instead of Japanese challenge :

Click on "ISO" image. I'm curious about the roster, never heard of that version.
