The Retro-PES Corner

@WhoAteMeDinner: Kelsen is now the goalkeeper coach, he's retired! Replaced by Lethal Lothar.
I never used this framework when dealing with condition arrows, it's the first time I'm trying it out and I'm loving it. Forces you to really pay attention to how players have been performing lately because that becomes your main criteria for picking your starting 11.

@WhoAteMeDinner :D

Well, what a game. A disallowed goal each in the second half, both teams hit the post and Valeny managed 13 minutes as a sub on the pitch before a straight red for him as well! It somehow ended 2-5. Burchet the only shining light having his full back on toast before his stamina ran out. Espimas got a 4.0! He was only playing because Macco was suspended.

I'm guess Kelsen came in later versions? No sign of him in mine. Only 23 players in my squad I think Miguel you mentioned having 28?

I need some to retire I think, only four games in to the season 1 point and only 3 goals scored. Need some firepower from somewhere. Ordaz seems to have the stats but just doesn't seem to produce. Huylens has his days but is on the decline while Castolo drives me nuts. Hamsun isn't coming on particularly well so far. Burchet is the shining light but can barely last a game.

I'm 99% sure he's retired and gave his spot to Lethal Lothar.
I have 28 because of the newly introduced players such as Baumann, El Moubarki, Van den Berg, Ettori and Gutierrez, which weren't in PES6. Particularly El Moubarki and Gutierrez evolve into two amazing players, far far better than any default ever was.
Keep betting on Ordaz, of all the defaults you have he'll clearly be the best even if he's not impressive right now. At least he's still young...

I only have ISS Pro, ISS Pro Evo, PES 2, PES 3, PES 6 and PES 2009, PES 2010 (last two hardly played and never started an ML in them, tippy tappy pass fests too much for me. That is why I have not bull's notion who Hamsun or El Mubberaki is and Kelsen is still my main dude. :WORSHIP:

This list reminds as I still run a PS2 (NTSC 60 Hz mode, :D) that I think I will try and play the grandaddy of the Master League format, ISS Pro Evo this week. :!

Normally as you play the game you can tell who's playing well and generally the marks at the end tend to be roughly what you'd have given the players yourself. Just had a game and though Dodo was magnificent throughout, won everything, was even spraying accurate passes around and had a couple of shots on target as well and I thought he's got to be man of the match here.

Well, I don't think I can recall a midfielder getting this before, bearing in mind he didn't score either.

I never look at the game data stuff, the numbers they give players are a bit like the commentary, random old tosh. :CONFUSE:

Oh and I am playing the PES 3 promotion / relegation playoffs tonight, it is actully a round robin group of death thing, three games, top two teams get or retain promtion to Division 1.
I will be outclassed for sure as Dario Silva is still badly injured and have five default players in the team now, will be using the old L1 and O button hoof it combo alot to even the odds. :BOUNCE:

@WhoAteMeDinner I must admit I'd always thought that, but playing those Norwegian leagues and in this ML I have to say the ratings have been pretty good surprisingly although keepers never seem to get high marks even when they've made a load of saves.

Hoooooooooooooooooof! Did Sam take over now he's at loose end? :DD If you get promoted he'll come in and keep you up for just 4m. Even if you're not in the relegation places when he takes over.

@WhoAteMeDinner Oh and I wonder when Kelsen disappeared then, he's not in 6.

@mattmid , must have been retired in PES 4 or 5 then. Strange as Vorlander and others played on nearly as long as Roger Milla. :CONFUSE:

Big Sam and me are tight. He is lined up to be Lombardia's (Inter) Director of Football next season, tasked with getting a few more giants at the back and in midfield. 1.90m and above to head in a few
more crosses. :BOUNCE:

Played this a couple of years ago, this is probably season 4 or 5 or 6, dont know :DD. Great thing about ML in ISS 2 is that you dont have to negotiate, just to collect enough points. For example, Zidane costs 45 points, so you need 4,5 or maybe less, wins and Zidane is in your club. In later editions is impossible to buy "star" players immediately or even after 3,4 seasons. Anyway, this thread is very addictive, tonigh i'm gonna install Winning Eleven 7 international and start ML again after 10+ years. I remember fucking Brescia with fucking Igli Tare and Roberto Baggio. They played 3-5-2 with 3 DMFs, what a team.

I think when I get home tonight I will try Top Player and the medium level for fatigue and transfers. I know at least on Top Player I won't be chasing after the ball so much because on lower levels you can afford to do it without consequences.
Not sure I want player development though. I'll post my progress.

@Titch I think it depends if you're going to do the challenge of just ML players or allow yourself transfers. If it's just ML players I think it's going to be extremely hard with no development.

Maybe I'll have transfers then. Probably won't be able to afford anyone anyway

Domzale Season 2 update

So it's halfway through season 2 and after a difficult start...

Lech Poznan 0-0
Partizani Tirana 1-2
SV Ried 2-5
Korona Kelice 0-1

Suddenly the team found some form, drawing the first leg of the cup 0-0 away to Partizani before hitting our stride with....

GA Eagles 2-0
Hercales 4-2
Vardar Skopje 2-0

The best winning run to date. In between a 1-0 loss in the cup with a weakened team was the price to keep players fresh for the final game before the break

Table

Lech Poznan 16
Parizani Tirana 16
SV Reid 15
Domzale 10 ( 3-1-3 11-10 )
Heracles 9
GA Eagles 6
Korona 5
Vardar 4

A three game winning run that saw us leap from last to 4th. Still a gap to the top three though and to have any chance of closing on them then none of the games against them can be lost.

Top Scorer Honsak (Ried) 5 (4 against me in the 2-5!)

Top Assists Burchet (Domzale) 2 (tied)

Domzale

Top Scorer Huylens 3
Top Assists Burchet 2
Top Rated Dodo 6.9

Player Latest

Jaric and Dodo are gaining lots of development points most games this season and are really beginning to show improvement. Dodo is everywhere and dominating games in the middle of the park. His new partner the last three games? Minanda! I've dropped him back into midfield to compensate for his lack of quickness in speed and agility now and he has been a revelation. He's getting more time on the ball and really playmaking in the middle of the park now, getting balls out to Fouque or Burchett, or playing 1-2's off the striker and generally running the show on the ball.

As a consequence he's getting into better positions for shots and scored his first goal of the season, indeed of the game so far with a nice finish into the corner of the goal. He also hit a majestic shot from about 30 yards out from a ball laid back to him by Ordaz, side footing it impudently and just shaving the outside of the post with the keeper beaten. The King is not dead, long live the King. The only problem is it is limiting Stein's game time but he is replacing him either late on or earlier if we are ahead to help shore things up.

Ordaz is playing well although still missing too many chances but does have two to date and Burchett continues to threaten albeit not for long as he tires very quickly. Perhaps if I took my finger off the sprint button when he has it that might help

Ivarov is looking very solid, no errors at all so far this season. Libermann continues to win everyrthing in the air and Giersen and Ruskin are doing well at full back, although Ruskin isn't shining as much as he did last season but does get forward very well and I'm toying with the idea of pushing him forward into that role if we are chasing a game.

Me and Castolo are done. As they say, he couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo. His passing is awful and he just isn't doing it. Back up only for now. Ximilez and Espimas are mainly subs now although both have filled in at full back when suspensions hit there and did ok. Hamsun continues to frustrate a little but is slowly improving. Iouga does a good job on the rare occasions he's required, no frills but steady. Lothar is yet to play this season and probably won't. Zamenhof is believed to be on holiday in Dubai.

So, can there be a second half promotion push inspired by Miguel's ML United or will it all fade away like last season did? We shall see.

Well, I took the plunge.
Top Player, Normal ML level, no player development.
First game: 2-0 against Valenciennes!
Iouga with a penalty straight down the middle after Ordaz was chopped down and Ordaz with a flying header from a Minanda corner.
They had the odd chance and hit the post, as did I.
So pleased :)

What a cruel game football can be. Just played against Korona. Took an early lead then had a man sent off for a foul that really wasn't that bad. Ten minutes later another straight red, followed by another straight after half time! All three should have been yellows, none were from behind or through the back of the player. Anyway rearguard action, 4-3-0 formation! Hung on and hung on and hung on until 1 minute of stoppage time signalled. They get a corner and score with a header. Gutted!

Gosh this is tough!
One small mistake can cost you dearly. Even when it's not your fault.

@WhoAteMeDinner: The more you speak of that promotion system in PES3 the more I'm interested, sounds amazing to me. Tell us then how it went for you.

@Red_Star_Belgrade: Welcome to our little corner mate! Loved your screenshots, I didn't know it was possible for me to get even more nostalgic but those pictures did the trick.
When you do kick off your ML be sure to stop by and tell us about it.
I liked the word you used to describe our thread: "addictive". Once you catch retro-PES fever, you're done!

@mattmid: Very much enjoyed reading your update. First of all, you're doing quite well considering the squad you have, I wasn't expecting you to get a balanced record of Wins/Draws/Losses such as the one you've got at this point. Also a 6.9 average for Dodo is just pornographic, what a monster! That 9.0 match rating was nuts...(ha, pornographic!)
Then, you had a really got idea there: Minanda playing further away from the strikers. I wonder if he could play "regista" like Pirlo, sitting in front of his defense and using his playmaker skills to build-up play there. It absolutely makes sense given he loses his quickness, speed and agility over the years so you'll want him farther away from the opposition's defense, which gives him more space to work the ball.
Is Al-Zamenhof already preparing his new career after the end of his footballing days?

@Titch: Good luck for your save, is it on PES6?

Before I go, (read this with a british accent please!) I have a problem of discipline in my squad. My players are terrible at following Ordaz...

Yeah PES6.
Conceded four goals so far. The first two were great and the the other two were down to my defender not clearing right away when I asked him to and the other one I pressed the wrong button and gave it straight to their striker. Seen the CPU try a couple of roulettes which is nice. The first they forgot to take the ball with them! Also saw an over head kick which is a rarity. Loving it so far!

@miguelfcp Ordaz, very good :DD Glad you enjoyed it, thanks. At 0-1-3 early on I feared the worst but suddenly it all clicked for that three game spell. I still can't believe Dodo's 9 but he really did play that well, I don't think he misplaced a pass the whole game and won so many tackles and second balls. He's literally everywhere, if he can add goals he's going to be like a Kante/Lampard hybrid! Oh and you're right, Ordaz is just beginning to show what he's about as well, slowly but surely. Maybe Minanda will gradually work his way back to regista then sweeper then end up in goal  Talking of keeper's, Zamenhof is rumoured to be touting for a goalkeeping coaching job in Dubai, although his lack of actual playing experience might hinder that!

@Titch Great fun isn't it? I did a wrong button press earlier with Liberman as a cross came in and calmly played it straight back to Ivarov from six yards out in a packed penalty area! Fortunately I managed to hoof it clear with Ivarov!

ML United - Season 3 - mid-season update

Objectives for this season:
- Finish Top 4 (top half of the league)
- finish top 4 in less goals conceded and in goals scored
- get more wins than losses or draws

This is the season in which I'll go for the top 4 of the league. Typically I wouldn't expect my team to fight for it if we look at the overall quality of our roster right now but I've seen enough of these guys and they're more than ready to be much more relevant in this league. Last season was strange given we were at the bottom of the table in mid-season and ended up with chances of getting promoted as 2nd placed, finishing 3rd; but even so I can't realistically aspire to get promoted with teams such as newly-relegated Besiktas, Dinamo Zagreb and Nancy which are still way better than our ML United. So first we'll have to establish ourselves as a top-4 team in D2, the next step after that one should be fighting for promotion at last.

Transfers in:
- Jackson (newgen), 17-year-old Centre-Back
Transfers out:
- Huylens (retired), 38 years old

Our first retired player is Huylens, who barely played, and gave his place on the team to newcomer Jackson. This 17-year-old is already our best defender so you can understand how important he'll be for us, particularly knowing that we've been consistently among the league's worse defensive records since the beginning of the save. Now with Baumann, Jaric and Jackson our defense is finally at an average level at least, comparing to the other D2 sides.

---
The season kicks off and on our first two matches, two wins, including a 1-5 against Heracles in which Gutierrez scored 4! Heracles is now 8th with 1 draw and 6 losses, though they have a few interesting players like Andy Reid and Chantome they really play awful as a team and their defense is horrible.
We slowed down a bit after those two matches but managed to remain 1st in the league, up until the second-to-last fixture before the winter transfer period break when we faced Dinamo Zagreb at home. Last season, our 0-4 loss at home against them sparked a revolution in our league, but still gives me nightmares to this day. This time around we didn't go down easily, losing 0-1 after a late goal by Modric; which allowed Dinamo to get our 1st place and also Nancy took advantage of it to get the 2nd place.
We've been using the same-old starting 11 except for the introduction of Jackson:
Ivarov; Jackson, Baumann, Jaric; Stein, Van den Berg, El Moubarki, Ruskin, Minanda; Gutierrez and Ordaz.

1st - Dinamo Zagreb - 15 pts
2nd - Nancy - 14 pts
3rd - ML United - 13 pts - 4W /1D/ 2L - 10 goals scored / 5 conceded (1st in goals scored, tied 2nd for best defense)
4th - Besiktas - 12 pts

As expected, Dinamo, Nancy and Besiktas are actively pushing for promotion and we've applied for this 4-way Fight Club.
Notice our defensive record, Jackson's making an impact already!

Top scorer: Gutierrez (5)
Assists: El Moubarki (4) - 3 of them were crosses for a Gutierrez's header against Heracles, scored 3 headers in one match!

D2 Cup: Won 5-1 on aggregate vs. Besiktas on the quarter-finals, next: semifinals vs. Metz (pain in the *** of a team to face, they play a freaking 5-4-1 for god's sake). Really impressed with our two matches against Besiktas, they were one of the strongest teams (probably even the strongest) to compete for the D2 and we dominated them completely. Dinamo Zagreb was also eliminated which means out of the current top-4 D2 sides, only Nancy and ML United remain. Another Cup final for us? We already beat Metz in last year's cup semifinals...

PES 3 : I experimented with a module lately very used in Serie A in my latest game, the 4-3-3 with two wings. I put Celnini in front of the defense, with heavy defensive duties and the task to start the action, which penalized me a bit since he isn't the most technical sound, but gave me very good cover; two offensive midfielders, Ostwaut who had the job to also come back helping, and Minanda, free from defensive burdens of course. Castolo as the left wing who should cut in the inside and Espimas at the far right, Barota as the only forward as Njord had unfortunately the grey arrow.

I totally forgot how good it felt to give tasks with the arrows which players regularly fullfilled, seeing Castolo effectively cutting in from the wing or Celnini covering without leaving too much the defense. Unluckily I couldn't win, but it felt like a nice tactical change anyway, I want to try it again with some other solutions in terms of player switching. Maybe I'll try too that Minanda in front of the defense or anyway more behind to compensate for the lack of build up..
By the way, here comes the first dilemma of this ML.. I've bought Chiesa after a long try, top striker of the time, but I'm feeling guilty to use him now.. maybe I'll leave him as a luxury benchwarmer, or I'll made up some rule to limitate his use, even if I'm taking a lot of punishment from the cpu the default guys are too fun to play with at the moment..!

@miguelfcp A good read as always. It's looking like it's going to come down to the mini league between you four in the second half of the season. If you can keep the goals out as you have the first half then you must be in with a decent chance of promotion. Zamenhof can then increase his wage and holiday in the best places. Good luck!

@Madmac79 Welcome aboard :)

How is it possible to draw 1-1 but have no shots on target? It wasn't an own goal and the shot WAS on target...
Anyway back to ML...
Some things I've gathered so far:
I've stuck to the original 3-5-2 formation and rotated the team as much as possible due to fatigue. So far not many have tired that much which is good.
Ivarov is reliable. Doesn't really have to do a lot but when called into action he's always ready. Some of the shooting is shocking from the CPU so I do fear for him if I was ever promoted as he would be tested a lot more. But we will see.
Can't complain about the CBs too much. Some of the first touches are pretty bad which did lead to a goal (Ceciu!) but generally they are solid.
Ruskin and Giersen are better further forward. Previously I had them in fullback roles but seem to be a bit wobbly defensively.
Stein is ridiculous. He seems to be picking up every loose ball and I never see him put a foot wrong. A very tidy player.
Dodo and Iouga are good at getting in the way but on the ball they are very weak. I know both can hit one so they can be useful if they are that end of the pitch.
Ximelez is amazing in a wide position. You can play him as a SMF but the wider the better, as he seems to have good turning ability and goes past defenders with ease.
Espimas is sometimes effective like that but I haven't got the best out of him yet.
Minanda has to play. He just makes things happen. Shame he's always knackered.
Ostwaut is a dark horse. Technically not perfect but point him in the direction of the goal and he's always a threat.
I rotate the forward line a lot to avoid tiredness so I haven't seen that many magical moments from anyone yet.
My best performance I actually lost 1-0. The passing was so crisp and comfortable. I forgot I was playing against Top Player. 61% possession in the first half. They were top of the table and didn't really threat until the end with an unstoppable pile driver poor Ivarov could do nothing about. I was so deflated.
Lost my first cup game 1-0 (Ceciu!) but I still think I can turn it around.
The last team I played must have held the circle button down the whole time. Dirty buggers! I have never seen so many slide tackles from the CPU before. Referee laughed it off though. I knew he was a softy when I took one of their players out and it was only a free kick.
The CPU is very direct and sometimes leaves gaps. There has only been one moment I really should have punished them for a lapse in concentration. Occasionally I do have to admire some of their play though.
As I said it has been tough but I am really enjoying it. I was extremely worried that I wouldn't even score and everyone would drop dead after two or three games but my team are troopers.
Sitting mid table atm so I'm reasonably happy. Not long to go until I reach the desired points to get me out of the red. I don't know what kind of points I will need next season. I'm guessing if I have the exact amount of points needed it will start at 0 next season?
If so I'm hoping for some sort of bonus. I forget what happens. Usually points were never an issue as I always played on a lower level previously.
I have also been playing on the default camera. I usually go for wide to see my players better but this is working just fine.
If I can cut out the silly mistakes and stay calm everything should work out ok.
(Ceciu!)

@Titch Sounds like it's going really well. I don't know whether the difficulty level effects just the fatigue, transfer difficulty level etc only or whether it has any bearing on the CPU level as well (aside from the actual difficulty skill level set). Reason I wonder that is the cpu teams are very strong in mine and I've seen very few poor shots, but this is my own option file so I don't do whether that has more to do with it or not. Ivarov is far from a spectator in mine.

There's no bonus points for positions at least from what I've seen. I assume a Cup win and of course Promotion will get a bonus. I made my deficit up in pre season friendlies last season. The wages went up a touch with contract renewals but I'm close to getting there in this second season and I think I might just make it before pre season so I can use that to top up and play less games too I think to allow for more training without tiring them out playing.

Are you playing pes6 on PC or PS? I wonder because I don't have an Ostwault (I'm on PC)

I play on a really wide camera using the camera zoom tool. I use a value of 970 and love the camera view. See below..

camera.jpg

Sorry not him it's Fouque.
Financially I'll have to plan at least two seasons ahead!
That camera is great! Guessing you can only zoom out from that side?
