This is what I've read, anyway.
yeah my bad...i've just checked back was talking off article that seems to hint at the certainty of online for both consoles, looks like it was only for the 360, (again, my bad :) ), that sorta explains the scores then, big blow for sony and neversoft as well, they'v lost a lot of potential buyers imo....

phil harrison says that march is not a confirmed release date for the ps3 in europe

Stefan Dettmering, president de Sony Computer Entertainment Germany

Germany, reacted to this advertisement: "... This information was drawn out of its context. The question related to the number of Playstation 3 which would be available at the time of the exit of the console in March in Europe. Phil Harrison did not wish to come to a conclusion about this subject. It on the other hand never declared that this one would not be there at the date envisaged...".
Playstation 3 thus (for the moment) is always planned for ego of March on our premises!
To follow...

Playstation 3 Firmware 1.10 Released - Supports Homebrew!

Yes, you are reading the title correctly! Sony have just released version 1.10 of the PS3's firmware for any Japanese gamers who already have a PS3 through the use of the official Japanese PS3 site. As Japanese gamers queue up to receive their brand new PS3 consoles the big guys back at Sony have been refining the install method of the PS3's firmware update. With PS3 firmware v1.10 being released, gamers are half way between being able to interface their PSP's with a PS3 console. According to Sony's PS3 Japan site, this firmware update will provide "various functional additions and strengthening of security." Judging from the first bullet point in the overall system changes section, it looks like the Playstation Network couldn't be accessed in v1.00...my bad. Here's an translation from Sony's site detailing what version 1.10 features:

Whole (overall system changes)

- It reached the point where the service of PLAYSTATION Network can be utilized.
- With the picture keyboard of European language, it reached the point where it can do the letter input of single tap system.

Setting

- Music CD output frequency was added to music setting.
- ATRAC is made effective, added to substance setting.
- In type of keyboard of peripheral device setting, type of keyboard which can be selected increased.
- The “cross color decrease filter” was added to display setting.
- 5 minutes later option added to screen saver options in display settings.

Video

- When playing back the animated picture file which is retained in the hard disk and the record media with picture mode, it reached the point where full can be chosen.

Network

- Downloading music and the animated picture file with Internet browser, it reached the point where it can retain in the hard disk.
- PLAYSTATION Store - The following contents can be downloaded.
PLAYSTATION 3 standard software
PSP with the PlayStation standard software which operates (PSP system software version 3.00 or more is necessary)
- It corresponded to traditional form letter Chinese and simplified form letter Chinese indication with Internet browser
- The online manual was added.

Other

- In addition Calculation method of hard disk capacity was modified.
As for empty capacity of the hard disk, the numerical value which calculated 1GB as the 1024?024?024= approximately 1,073,740,000 byte is indicated. Because of that, capacity than the numerical value which is stated as specification is smaller indicated in the instruction manual and the like. Setting the ⇒ [substance setting] the ⇒ you can verify the empty capacity of the hard disk, with system information.
- PlayStation of the part in PS3 and operational status of the PlayStation®2 standard software were renewed. You can now verify up-to-date operational status with the private search sight.
In order to do the update (as you may have guessed) you will need a PS3 and an internet connection, and can find the update using the (system update) symbol in the PS3's XMB. The PS3 will then download the update which according to the download page requires at 110MB free. You can also download the update onto your PC via Sony or from our QuickJump download site and then transferring the update which is named "PS3UPDAT.PUP" to a USB storage device and then to your PS3. We will not host the download due to legality issues which could ensue if we did so. If you are in Japan, own a PS3 and would like to get the update then make sure you visit the official Sony PS3 firmware update page before doing so, and make sure you copy the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file to x://PS3/UPDATE folder on your console.

There's currently a heavy discussion on this going on in our forums, with many famous names from the PSP homebrew scene working on taking a peek inside the PS3 firmware update. If you want to get involved move right on over to our PS3 forums and sound off!

UPDATE 1: Looks like Sony have just released the PS3 firmware update v1.10 for US users a week before the US launch of the PS3. Get it from the link below!

UPDATE 2: News is coming in very quickly on more PS3 developments and one great find that we have here at QJ is the launch of an Open Platform for PS3 website. Currently the site doesn't say much except "PLAYSTATION®3 allows any desired third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Details will be posted on this site soon.". We aren't sure how long the site has been up, but we do know that it confirms what Phil Harrison said about the PS3 being 'open platform' back in September.

Hopefully this means that we'll see a large homebrew scene developing with the PS3 allowing easy integration of 3rd party software. We already know that the PS3 allows you to install another operating system as we told you guys last month when we came a cross a large amount of PS3 XMB screenshots. The power of a cell processor and the graphical power of the PS3 give pretty much endless possibilities to a programmer.

One of the most dissapointing things that sony have taken out of the PS3 capabilities is region free games...No longer will thought of being able to play imports regualarly be a possibility.

people spending money ona PS3 have to seriously consider why they are gamers...

So they'll let you run homebrew on a next-gen machine where you're not going to be bothered about playing 10-year-old games or a Mario clone, but not on a PSP which is designed for quick blasts on a game? Weird.

Just seeing the firmware update list above is making me want one though. Even though I don't want any of the games that are coming out for it for at least six months.

Damn this addiction.

I hope they release the silver one soon as my whole sony setup matches that colour. And the black box will just look out of place, and will show all the dust im my room even better :D

Hahaha, yeah, it's strange the way they seem to attract dust. The 360 is pretty dust-free and yet the PS2 looks like it's been buried for a hundred years.

According to the latest 1up.com show, apparently PS3 games in standard def look absolutely awful! They showed a few clips and it really does look shite.

Normal, the games are created for a high definition system, it's like the Xbox 360, i remember NBA 2K6, worst than Xbox 1 game.

Actually that isn't true. Yes the resolution is not as high but the textures are still recognisable as HD content. I know from playing Oblivion that it is next gen. Gears of War in SD is meant to be sensational. However what they showed, and what they were saying, is that the cables that come with the PS3 are so bad that games running in SD look awful.

I'm not spending £400+ for games to look shite in SD. They should be developed to look great in both versions.

Which are you saying it is, poor cables, poor development or both?

I know what you're saying, and I'm not keen on a PS3 either (at least until the price drops to a decent level). But they wouldn't make games that look awful in SD - surely? They've got testing teams, they'll have all kinds of televisions.

Maybe Sony are working on a special "next-gen" output cable for £50...

I know that SD sources on HDTV's generally look awful but I don't know whether the opposite is true - downloading the show so will see then ;)

Only a small minority of people have HDTVs - I surely hope it's not true. I will also say that - lately - 1up have been a bit random with their reviews and news features, so maybe it should be taken with a pinch of salt?

My 360 looks pretty great on SD.

It doesn't matter to me anyway, by the time PS3 is out here I'll be playing in HD. I think by March a lot more people will have high definition televisions as well.

My 360 looked good on SD with my old 42" rear projection TV. It looks the nuts on my 42" LG HD Plasma though in HD!!

The PS2 RF Cable is poor so one can assume it will be because of the RF cable you will get with the PS3 and yes SD on an HD TV looks diabolical.

I will have a 20GB PS3 later this week (Friend from Japan managed to get one for me). I have a 360 so can compare each on SD. Also if anyone has any questions feel free to post them on here I will try and answer them.

I think 1up says that you don't even get a scart/composite with PS3....but I think this may only be with the US version

I haveta say that I am a lil excited by the PS3...but not for the games mind. Huge movie fan and the built in bluray player sounds nice....and combine this with it being surprisingly quiet and I am seriously tempted. It'll be nice to showcase a HDTV if/when I get one.

Oddly, the thing that is stopping me is the so called "minor" issue of the lack of rumble. Games will feel empty without it :(

IGN says the PS3 does not upscale PS1 and PS2 games.

Also Resistance got a socre of 9.1 which is damn impressive for a launch game.

Maddox is not a fan:

EDIT: Just found this. 360's Ridge Racer 6 Vs PS3's Ridge Racer 7

http://www.destructoid.com/ridge-racer-6-7-comparisons-27828.phtml

Apparently they are both the same game. However, 360 is 720p and PS3 is 1080p.

The poster claims that despite the difference in time and the hardware supporting the two games, Ridge Racer 6 for the 360 looks a lot more detailed, and has posted some pictures to back up his views.

Overall, he says it seems the PS3 makes better use of illumination, while the 360 version makes better use of textures.

There you have it. Several other comparisons have been made, too, between the two consoles, with people saying the games they share look almost identical on both. I suspect it's going to be quite a while before the PS3's supposed graphical superiority starts to show in comparison to the 360.
