Sony PlayStation 3

yeah as really i cant even notice the difference in all three pics (especially the second and third one), if anything, the lighting in the third pics looks more realistic and much more detailed with the rays coming through the window and all, really very impressive!!

You can't? I reccommend Spec Savers?\\:o/

All 3 pics actually ARE the same cuz DMC always used in-game graphics for its cutscenes. The only reason the last pic might not look as detailed is because Dante is standing further away from the screen. I'm pretty sure it'll look better even in in-game when the camera zooms into your face.

like MGS4. but its not Dante as you play as a new guy called Nero.

From what Ive been told Dante is the bad guy in this game(!). The main objective is to ressurrect Sparda, and Dante tries to stop you.

Define a failure please.

The Launch had problems for Microsoft, however they achieved exactly what they set out to do. The aim was to launch in all major territories within 3 weeks of each other, that they did. And it was a success. I had my machine a week after the US, many many others did as well.

I would rather fight the crowds for a machine during a global launch than get shafted AGAIN by Sony and have to wait until March.

It wasnt a sucess in Japan, not by a long shot

Re: Sony PlayStation 3 "Delayed in Europe until March 2007"

Sony should release the F1 game here in the United States, because it looks fantastic.

While i know that it will be playable on an American PS3, I don't want to pay, the cost of the game plus shipping from Europe

Re: Sony PlayStation 3 "Delayed in Europe until March 2007"

Graphics on the F1 game are awesome ill give Sony tonnes of credit for that! Looks like the PS3 might eventually be worth a look (when the price comes down)

PS3 Box Revealed

ps2-vs-ps3-box.jpg

while the graphic itself is legitimate, its inclusion on the Blu-ray box is a mockup done by IGN. However, note the dimensions of the graphic -- it matches that of the dimensions of the cover art on a Blu-ray movie. Also, Sony producing a custom Blu-ray box when it already is manufacturing Blu-ray movie boxes is not cost-efficient. It may be conceptualized, but we believe the final case will not look much different.

Re: Sony PlayStation 3 "Delayed in Europe until March 2007"

That PS3 on the left looks shizer! It really looks retro, i.e. PS1 style. I really don't like it, maybe they could change the Blu-Ray box to black? But then that would defeat the point of SOny promoting Blu-Ray!

80/20 split for 60 GB PS3s, 20 GB

Summary:
After the initial launch of 400k PlayStation 3 units in the U.S., Sony plans to ship another 800k by the end of 2006, making a total of 1.2 million units available.

Expect roughly an 80/20 split between the premium and core PS3s at launch
Speaking to analysts, Sony has confirmed that there will be an approximate 80/20 split between the number of premium (60GB) and core (20GB) PS3 units available at retail outlets through the end of the year. And by January, Sony predicts that Blu-ray production improvements will allow the company to ship roughly 1.2 million units per month through 2007.

In Japan, Sony will have another 1.2 million units shipped following the initial 100k for launch day.

PS3 Launch: 80% Will be 60 GB (page 2 of 2)

Summary:
PS3 Online, PS2 price drop, new PSP bundle

The PS3 finally goes online, but full-length game downloads are unlikely
The Lazard report also has a few other interesting details.

It suggests that Sony's PS3 online service will "ultimately include many features similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live," including "full music and video downloads, user-generated content, and Internet browsing."

On day one, PS3 owners can expect to see "basic community features such as video, audio and text chat, gamer rankings, as well as limited content downloads such as casual games and game updates."

But for those hoping that Sony will allow full-game downloads on their service, think again: the Lazard report cited Sony manager, who said that "storage and bandwidth constraints" would make full downloads of PS3 games impractical and therefore unlikely.

Sony continues to hold high expectations for its aging PlayStation 2, and is dead set on keeping the system's quoted 10-year lifespan, giving the console another four or five years of active development. The report suggests that a price drop to $99 will likely not occur for another year or two, but that such a cut would likely result in a "sizable lift" of PS2 sales.

There's movement on the PSP front, too, with Sony planning to release a new all-in-one-bundle that includes a UMD film, ATV Off Road Fury, and a 1GB memory stick. The bundle is expected this November for $229 or $249.

Sony's Answer for Xbox Live

Microsoft's Xbox Live has existed since 2002. How will Sony, who has never had a dedicated and successful online program in the console space -- the PS2's online was a total free for all -- compete with Microsoft's nearly four-year lead in the online console gaming service sphere?

They'll use Xfire.

By incorporating an existing service into their own PlayStation Network Platform (PNP), Sony hopes to circumvent existing problems in the console space that Microsoft has had to sort out and in using Xfire -- a company with an established messaging, matchmaking and gaming client -- Sony hopes to narrow the four-year gap in online gaming services that Microsoft currently enjoys (Xfire has been around since 2002).

In a transcript of Viacom's Q2 earning's report conference call a deal between Sony and Xfire was revealed:

Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market.

Although Sony and Xfire offered no further comments or details about the PS3 and Xfire connection, neither company denied the connection.

Testing of the Xfire client for PS3 appears to already be underway, with PS3-exclusive launch title Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom appearing in the supported software list on the PC Xfire client's .ini file.

Months ago, Sony's Computer Entertainment chief Ken Kutaragi indicated that PS3's online service would likely be free:

We don't charge for the basic functions of the network like matching services. Things like that are taken for granted on a PC, aren't they? There's the feeling of why a game console gets to charge for a service that's normal on a PC. So, we just made the basic services available, and based our business on the contents.

How will Xfire function on PS3? Details are sparse, but it's a safe bet that the some of the features offered on Xfire's PC implementation may carry over to the PS3 version of the software. What follows is a look at what Xfire offers PC users and what PS3 users may have to look forward to.

Friend Tracker
Like Xbox Live allows users to manage their Friend's lists, Xfire also allows users to track friends, seeing what they are playing and what they have been playing (and for how long).

One-Click Join
Similar to how Xbox Live allows users to click on their name and 'Join' the game if it's available, Xfire lets users do the same thing. If a friend is playing a game you want to, there's no need to input your IP address or server information, Xfire takes care of it for you. Safe to assume that the PS3 implementation of Xfire will only be the touch of a button (an 'X' perhaps) away from joining users from your Friend Tracker.

Server Browser
This feature allows users to see the variety of servers available for different games. The most useful part here, is the ability to sort between favorite maps, or your friend's favorite maps and gametypes. Will we be able to sort out Resistance: Fall of Man gametypes based on which servers are hosting our favorite map?

Xfire In-Game (IM While You Play) with Voice Chat
Obviously, in-game IM would be a bit more utilitarian on a PC, where all users have a keyboard, but Xfire's PS3 implementation may see use of a keyboard (the open-ended online platform is ripe for MMO development). Without a keyboard, Xfire and PS3 will provide a way of their own to communicate with users (perhaps entering letters via the controller like on Xbox Live). In addition to text communication, Xfire supports voice chat -- expect a version of voice chat to be included in whatever PS3 plans for online.

File & Patch Downloads
When there's an update for a game on Xbox Live, Microsoft automatically detects it when the game is booted up and prompts users to snag the download. Optional downloads (like marketplace transactions) are shown on the marketplace, will Xfire's file/patch download systems be a gateway to whatever form of marketplace Sony conjures up?

Profiles with Automatic Stats
Xfire exports an .xml feed of your stats (what games you play, how long you play them for) -- just like Xbox Live. Via the official site: "They're (the stats) on your profile and Miniprofile, which can be embedded anywhere on the web."

In addition to partnering with a software client that could potentially offer much of the functionality of Xbox Live, Sony's Xfire-powered PNP also serves as a second coup -- it strikes at the unified front Microsoft hopes to create with its Live Anywhere initiative. That program, the synergizing of Xbox Live and PC gamers, is something Sony could replicate if the PS3's version of Xfire interacts with the PC version of the program. But, will the games play together? And if PS3 and PC gamers can play together and Xbox 360 and PC gamers can play together, does cross platform gaming become even more of a reality?

Probably are able to do a basic service themselves, but when you're competing with somthing like Xbox live you need a head start ;)

Yes but all $ony does is walk around and talk shit about how they are the best, then they turn around and do not make their own online service. If they were such the shit and the best like they think they are, they would be able to make their own product that would compete with XBL. And its not just that M$ has had a four year start because $ony talked all kinds of shit around PS2 launch of e-mail, IM's, etc, etc. with the PS2 Online service and they never could make it happen then either. So I stand by the fact that they are imcompetent.........if the Xfire thing is true.

And why should they even bother competing with XBL, all $ony used to do is talk about how XBL would be a failure as nobody will pay for it........

Sony's denied using xfire as main online system, stating its only being used for one game.
Very possible as last I heard it was up to the individual developers to make their own online services........

Sony shoots down Xfire for PS3 rumours

Only single launch game to utilise Viacom-owned IM solution

Sony has been quick to quash rumours that the PlayStation 3 will incorporate a version of PC messaging and matchmaking solution Xfire for online gameplay.

While the company has admitted that one launch title - SOE's Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom - will utilise Xfire, there are no current plans to use the Viacom-owned technology.

"We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game," said a spokesperson for Sony in a statement to 1Up.

"However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire," continued the statement."

The rumours stemmed from a transcript of an earnings report issued by Viacom which revealed, "Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market."

Xfire is a PC application that allows players to send and receive instant messages, manage friends lists, voice chat and other social functions - features already available for Sony's rival Xbox 360, via Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

However, SOE's Chris Kramer also poured cold water on the idea that Sony would incorporate Xfire into the PS3 by clarifying: "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title."

"This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom."

Viacom recently acquired Xfire in a deal worth US$ 102 million.

Super Secret PS3 Launch Title In OPM November Issue
Posted Sep 16, 2006 at 07:18AM by Kyle M.

Tags: OPM It has been revealed today by a radiOPM podcast that the November issue of OPM (the Official Playstation Magazine) will feature a secret PS3 launch game that they "cannot talk about". This week, they have provided a couple of clues in their podcast: the game is five words long and that it is a launch game that you have "not heard of and won't hear of until the November issue of OPM" hits the shelves.

They also revealed that an actual PSP demo for the game Killzone: Liberation will be included in the OPM November issue if you buy the issue from a news stand. Subscribers will not get the UMD demo. Overall, the November issue of this magazine looks to be very interesting and we can't wait to get our hands on it!

One thing, don't count on guessing the PS3 launch title they have described correctly, they also said that the cues they have given are "completely useless", but be sure to leave any speculation in the comments! The discussion on the November issue of OPM begins at 40:20. Check out the download of the podcast below!
