( can you sense the sarcasm? :))
DVD's were not the same a blu-ray. DVD's gave a visual enhancement over VHS even on SDTV, aka 480i. Blu-ray will not make a movie look better than a DVD on a SDTV.

Re: PlayStation 3 - 20Gb : $499. 60 Gb: $599

deftonessmx17 my dear friend.

DVD have enough room to hold 480p movies. 480p is enchanced defintion.
BlueRay = 1080p movies. True HD.

The difference is huge. Please do not argue that BluRay is not an improvement over DVD. We are entering the HD era. On a HD TV, BlueRay will give you a huge improvement over DVD.

I'll do you a favor and I'll forget what you just said.

He is right. Common sense would say so anyway. The next step up from a DVD is HD quality. If you have a standard tv, all HD quality video would be scaled down to the best quality available on a SDTV which is DVD quality.

Linux will not allow to edit game code. It'll allow to write 3rd party code, programs, games and distribute. It will allow modders to get a handle of PS3 a lot faster.
Assuming we can plug in a portable HDD or storage device in the USB, it would be easy for someone to make an app that rips games onto the USB device. That could then be transfered to the PC, edited like what we do to PES, recompiled back into an iso, sent back to the PS3 and then ran using another ISO loader app.
It obviously wont be that easy cuz Sony will prevent that. But this is basically what happened on the PSP when they allowed modders to run unsigned code.

Re: PlayStation 3 - 20Gb : $499. 60 Gb: $599

The methods for transfering stuff between ps3 and pc are various.

For example
- you can access the PS3 HDD contents from your PC via network.
- you can use memory sticks

The thing is with LINUX sony allows you am opportuniy to temper with the system unlike x360 which has very tight security meassures. You can hack the PS3 using the PS3. That I think is the advantage for the mod community.

But are Sony THAT dumb?

Re: PlayStation 3 - 20Gb : $499. 60 Gb: $599

SONY is not that dumb and you can be sure that they'll take certain steps to prevent that.

But in the end, everything gets hacked.

Re: PlayStation 3 - 20Gb : $499. 60 Gb: $599

But the moment you allow unsigned code, anything is possible.

Sony disabled this on their newer firmwares but people still managed to run it through the GTA save file hack. Modders are like a pack of dogs waiting to pounce and exploit every hole in the security system. Actually allowing unsigned code is like leaving the front door open.

Oh, and more good news here: http://zdmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o1/Podcasts/OPM/051006.mp3

It is now confirmed that you can plug any external HDD to PS3 using USB.

The PS3 HDD itself is a regular SATA drive just like any PC HDD. Great shit.

Might get a PS3 now!

Get a massive 300gd HD & never upgrade again.

@ ash - yeah It is IDE

Re: PlayStation 3 - 20Gb : $499. 60 Gb: $599

They said that most if not any PC HDDs that are on the market will work.

The difference between SATA and IDE is bandwidth/speed. SATA are faster. Both should be compatible.

check this out:

http://www.gamestation.co.uk/

Gamestation are the first Games company to slap a price on the 60GB console.

£425? definatly £15 more than I expected.
They are not deifnate prices. They said that if it is cheaper they will charge less, but if its more they wont charge more. The money doesnt get taken until stock comes in. :)
So anyone pre-ordered. I am going to try GAME and Woolworths

very true.

I gave them a call to see what the stores were up to, and surprisingly they said the retail shops will starts to take deposits (i presume £20) from Monday!

Surely thats far too soon?!

I know for a fact Game are looking to start around August, although an early move by our competitors would mean we'd have to re-think it.

Re: PlayStation 3 - 20Gb : $499. 60 Gb: $599

According to GAME and GameStation, the 20GB version won't be sold in the UK!

www.gamesradar.com

Sony won't be releasing the 20GB version of its PS3 when the console launches in the UK on 17 November, according to one high street retailer.

Sony announced at its E3 conference on Monday that it would be launching its PS2 successor in two different versions - a premium, 60GB hard drive package and a less expensive 20GB version that, in addition to the smaller storage device, would also lack some key features.

However, while UK games store gamestation is already offering pre-orders for Sony's new machine, its customers are only able to put a holding deposit down on the more expensive 60GB model, which it has marked up at a price of £425.

When we contacted gamestation to ask why it wasn't taking pre-orders for the 20GB deal, we were told in no uncertain terms that it was because Sony wouldn't be releasing the slightly more wallet-friendly bundle in the UK.

We weren't offered any explanation as to why the 20GB would be unavailable, so we'll just have to wait for Monday morning when Sony will hopefully throw some light on the matter.

Maybe 20GB version is for poorer countries, like Xbox360 sell core versions in larger quantity on poorer countries e.g. easter europ (no offence to anyone from there :)

That's bad news though, less chance of getting a 60GB becasue more people will get it, if there was 20GB then the less knowledgeable people would get that, but on the other hand great for selling on eBay LOL

Very interesting, but thats definately not a confirmation from Game. Ive done my feedback with Head Office and we've not recieved any info on what sort of machines we will be getting. We dont even know the numbers yet, so for Sony to dismiss the 20GB version for UK this quickly is BS.

Im sure I'll know more info soon and will keep you updated, especially giving everyone a heads up on when you will be able to pre-order.

Re: PlayStation 3 - 20Gb : $499. 60 Gb: $599

You don't want that version anyway so don't worry.

maybe one of the dumbest things I've read around here lately :).
About the "lack" of 20gb units... it's as simple as this: everybody knows Sony will fail once again to deliver enough consoles in international markets when the launch day arrives. It happened with PS2 and it will happen with PS3, according to the latest forecasts. So knowing already that they won't be able to satisfy they had to take a production option and the rational is simple: if you have a product in 2 price versions that you know that ppl will "kill" to buy and you have production output problems which one do you go for? the expensive or the cheaper? :)

Do you know whether they have? Regardless of that, it's an insensitive joke on a forum which has members from Eastern Europe.
