In what looked to be fascinating contest at La Romareda, both sides appeared to be putting out strong teams, with the home side resting Zapater, and bringing in Celades in his place, in what was a formidable starting 11. Malaga had former Ipswich Town striker Pablo Counago leading their attack alongside the very dangerous marksman Edgar.
With three minutes gone, Diego Milito pressured Cesar Navas into a mistake, and the big centre back couldn't catch Milito, who fired in a left-footed drive from a tight angle that had Arnau scrambling, but ultimately hit the side netting. Milito's pace was scaring the central defensive pairing of Navas and Litos, with Navas being caught out again by Milito's agility. When the ball broke free, Oscar was first to react, but he leaned back when hitting a long range effort, and saw the ball balloon off into the sunset.
Jesus Gamez then put himself on a tightrope for the rest of the match by rashly cutting down Savio when he was going nowhere on the half way line. The referee brandished the yellow card to the right back, who would face an inevitable onslaught from Toledo and Savio.
The players from the away side looked to be very nervous - the occasion was getting to them. Inexplicably, they allowed a throw from Cesar to reach Movilla on the half way line unchallenged, and then even worse allowed the Mexican time to pick out a through pass between the right back and centre back. They didn't even stop Milito running across the box, but luckily for the visitors, the leading marksman in the league saw his low shot fizz wide.
With 17 minutes gone, Movilla was fouled 30m away from goal. The free kick favoured Savio's left foot, and he nearly showed the rapturous home fans why - he stepped up and curled a well struck free kick against the upright. Replays showed that Arnau probably would've saved it, but it was nevertheless a fantastic effort.
With just 20 minutes gone, the home side were awarded a penalty for their constant pressure. Gerardo was adjudged to have tripped Diego Milto just inside the box. It was a harsh decision by the referee, but the home fans loved it.
Milito's customary roll down the middle was saved by Arnau, and perhaps justice was served. It was a turning point in the first half, as the away side began to pass the ball a lot better, and La Blanquillos seemed to be chasing shadows. It all culminated in Malaga's first chance of the game - perhaps the best of the game. A ball in from the right caught Zaragoza napping, and Counago was all alone in the area, but managed to head over from 6 yards out.
Movilla tried to get things going for the home side. He was the orchastor of a slick move down the left which saw his looping shot well held by Arnau.
Talking of the Zaragoza left, Gamez had fouled Savio for the fourth time since his yellow by the 40th minute. Whilst the ref didn't produce the second yellow, the home fans were more concerned at seeing the Brazilian being stretchered off for treatment.
With only ten men on the pitch, Zaragoza had Cesar to thank for keeping them on level terms before the break. Edgar put in a ball from the weakened Zaragoza right, and this time Counago met the ball cleanly and well, but the former Real Madrid custodian produced a splendid save that saw the ball go over for a corner. It was at this time that Savio made way for Arca.
Before the second half began, Victor Munoz took the decision to withdraw leading scorer Diego Milito, who did look quite jaded in the match. He was replaced by the impressive German youngster Schwarz. This decision really didn't help Zaragoza out a great deal - they still struggled at keeping possession, which was a continuation of the end of the first half. Again, Cesar saved Zaragoza, with a fine smothering save from Counago who had sprung the offside trap. It seemed to swing the momentum back in the home sides favour, with Oscar beginning to find his passing range, which led to a low driven shot by Arca. Arnau, however, fielded it well. The pressure was on Malaga now, with Ewerthon harrying Litos into a poor backpass that Arnau couldn't control that led to a corner. Gamez made way after enduring a torrid time at full back.
And then the best chance to win it. Ewerthon did well to get a clean run down the right hand side, and whipped in a great cross that the Malaga defence couldn't defend - the ball was in early, and Movilla had made a great run into the far post. On the half volley, the Mexican looked as if he'd open the scoring, but in fairness, he made a great attempt with his right foot, but it skewed wide of Arnau's left upright. The visitors were rattled by this, and looked to kick Ewerthon to stop his pace from hurting them. However, it was nearly a route one long ball from Cesar that did them - his long clearance found Schwarz turning, who hit a half-volley from 40 yards out that, if on target, would've beaten Arnau.
In the end, it was again down to Cesar to save the game for Zaragoza - he made a magnificent one handed save from Counago in injury time which kept the score at 0-0. In the grand scheme of things, it was a result that the home side will probably look back on and be pleased with - Cesar was man of the match for preventing Malaga from putting the tie to rest before the second leg.
