Re: The All New PES5 Master League Thread.

Sorry for the delay, work has been pretty hectic this week!

Week 5, Season 1 - Division 2
Getafe survive onslaught to escape with point
Fenerbahce SK 0-0 Getafe CF

Getafe looked to continue their good recent league form by taking something away from their trip to Fenerbahce. Manager Leigh Butler chose not to keep faith with the side that won the first leg of the two sides' recent cup tie 2-0, returning to his first choice league side.

The visitors looked the more threatening in the early stages, particularly down the left hand side, where Riki was involved in creating the game's first chance. A good change of pace saw him in space out wide, and although Craioveanu could only miscontrol his cutback, Vivar Dorado fired the loose ball toward goal only to be thwarted by a last ditch challenge by Serkan Balci.

The home side should have gone ahead ten minutes later however, when a neat through ball from Appiah found Tencay one on one with Catalayud. The Getafe keeper won the duel, fisting Tuncay's attempted lob over the bar for a corner. Fenerbahce continued to control things before half time, and Getafe were happy to hear the referee's whistle blow with the game still scoreless.

The second half began in the same vein as the first, and Butler's patience ran out just before the hour mark, bringing on Pernía and Coelho for the ineffective Paredes and Craioveanu. The substitutions didn't change the flow of the game, and Matellan was soon forced into a desperate challenge to stop a surging Appiah run, thankfully making contact with the ball before the man.

1_6_punch.jpg
1_6_save.jpg

Catalayud in action: fisting away Tuncay's chip (left, centre) and saving at Appiah's feet (right)

Nothing that the away side could do would stop Fenerbahce having the ball in the net soon after, as Zafer latched onto a neat pass from Appiah to fire into the top corner - only for the effort to be ruled offside. Catalayud then raced from his line to save at Appiah's feet to stop a near certain goal as the home team increased the pressure still further. Despite this they could not find a way through in the last quarter of an hour and the game ended goalless.

Man of the Match: Deniz Baris (Fenerbahce)

Fenerbahce (4-4-2): Rustu / Luciano, Can Arat, Deniz Baris, Umit Ozat / Serkan Balci, Marco Aurelio, Gursoy, Appiah / Zafer, Tuncay

Getafe (4-5-1): Catalayud / Matellan, Belenguer (c), Cotelo, Paredes (sub Pernía 57) / Celestini, Cubillo, Redondo, Riki (sub Nano 78), Vivar Dorado / Craioveanu (sub Coelho 57)

After the game, manager Leigh Butler had this to say: "I think we were pretty fortunate to get a point out of today's game but sometimes you have to have a bit of luck in football. Appiah caused us problems whenever he had the ball at his feet and I don't think our concentration was at the level it has been in recent games, but we're pretty happy to take a point home with us."

The draw means Getafe hold on to third place, but are now three points behind joint leaders Panathinaikos and Parma.

Real Zaragoza vs Malaga CF - Division 2 Cup, Semi Final Leg 1

Match highlights - http://www.sendspace.com/file/zojrxb (6mb)

In what looked to be fascinating contest at La Romareda, both sides appeared to be putting out strong teams, with the home side resting Zapater, and bringing in Celades in his place, in what was a formidable starting 11. Malaga had former Ipswich Town striker Pablo Counago leading their attack alongside the very dangerous marksman Edgar.

With three minutes gone, Diego Milito pressured Cesar Navas into a mistake, and the big centre back couldn't catch Milito, who fired in a left-footed drive from a tight angle that had Arnau scrambling, but ultimately hit the side netting. Milito's pace was scaring the central defensive pairing of Navas and Litos, with Navas being caught out again by Milito's agility. When the ball broke free, Oscar was first to react, but he leaned back when hitting a long range effort, and saw the ball balloon off into the sunset.

Jesus Gamez then put himself on a tightrope for the rest of the match by rashly cutting down Savio when he was going nowhere on the half way line. The referee brandished the yellow card to the right back, who would face an inevitable onslaught from Toledo and Savio.

The players from the away side looked to be very nervous - the occasion was getting to them. Inexplicably, they allowed a throw from Cesar to reach Movilla on the half way line unchallenged, and then even worse allowed the Mexican time to pick out a through pass between the right back and centre back. They didn't even stop Milito running across the box, but luckily for the visitors, the leading marksman in the league saw his low shot fizz wide.

With 17 minutes gone, Movilla was fouled 30m away from goal. The free kick favoured Savio's left foot, and he nearly showed the rapturous home fans why - he stepped up and curled a well struck free kick against the upright. Replays showed that Arnau probably would've saved it, but it was nevertheless a fantastic effort.

With just 20 minutes gone, the home side were awarded a penalty for their constant pressure. Gerardo was adjudged to have tripped Diego Milto just inside the box. It was a harsh decision by the referee, but the home fans loved it.

Milito's customary roll down the middle was saved by Arnau, and perhaps justice was served. It was a turning point in the first half, as the away side began to pass the ball a lot better, and La Blanquillos seemed to be chasing shadows. It all culminated in Malaga's first chance of the game - perhaps the best of the game. A ball in from the right caught Zaragoza napping, and Counago was all alone in the area, but managed to head over from 6 yards out.

Movilla tried to get things going for the home side. He was the orchastor of a slick move down the left which saw his looping shot well held by Arnau.

Talking of the Zaragoza left, Gamez had fouled Savio for the fourth time since his yellow by the 40th minute. Whilst the ref didn't produce the second yellow, the home fans were more concerned at seeing the Brazilian being stretchered off for treatment.

With only ten men on the pitch, Zaragoza had Cesar to thank for keeping them on level terms before the break. Edgar put in a ball from the weakened Zaragoza right, and this time Counago met the ball cleanly and well, but the former Real Madrid custodian produced a splendid save that saw the ball go over for a corner. It was at this time that Savio made way for Arca.

Before the second half began, Victor Munoz took the decision to withdraw leading scorer Diego Milito, who did look quite jaded in the match. He was replaced by the impressive German youngster Schwarz. This decision really didn't help Zaragoza out a great deal - they still struggled at keeping possession, which was a continuation of the end of the first half. Again, Cesar saved Zaragoza, with a fine smothering save from Counago who had sprung the offside trap. It seemed to swing the momentum back in the home sides favour, with Oscar beginning to find his passing range, which led to a low driven shot by Arca. Arnau, however, fielded it well. The pressure was on Malaga now, with Ewerthon harrying Litos into a poor backpass that Arnau couldn't control that led to a corner. Gamez made way after enduring a torrid time at full back.

And then the best chance to win it. Ewerthon did well to get a clean run down the right hand side, and whipped in a great cross that the Malaga defence couldn't defend - the ball was in early, and Movilla had made a great run into the far post. On the half volley, the Mexican looked as if he'd open the scoring, but in fairness, he made a great attempt with his right foot, but it skewed wide of Arnau's left upright. The visitors were rattled by this, and looked to kick Ewerthon to stop his pace from hurting them. However, it was nearly a route one long ball from Cesar that did them - his long clearance found Schwarz turning, who hit a half-volley from 40 yards out that, if on target, would've beaten Arnau.

In the end, it was again down to Cesar to save the game for Zaragoza - he made a magnificent one handed save from Counago in injury time which kept the score at 0-0. In the grand scheme of things, it was a result that the home side will probably look back on and be pleased with - Cesar was man of the match for preventing Malaga from putting the tie to rest before the second leg.

Final Score
Real Zaragoza 0
Malaga 0

Week 6, Season 1 - Division 2
Another blank as visitors curse woodwork
Sporting CP 0-0 Getafe CF

After the poor performance against Fenerbahce, Getafe fans were looking for an increased level of commitment and concentration in their next league game. They could not have wished for a better choice of opponent, as Sporting were bottom of the league with only 1 point from 5 games. Strikers Deivid and Joao Alves were chronically misfiring, yet to register a goal between them this season. Despite this the Spaniards stuck with their 4-5-1 formation, but shuffled their pack, with Paunovic and Guiza making their first appearances of the season.

The reshuffle nearly paid dividends immediately, as 8 minutes in Guiza swiveled onto Cotelo's pass and smashed a fierce shot towards goal. Tiago Ferreira stood flat footed as the ball flew off the top right angle and bounced away to safety. The home side responded with a driving Sa Pinto run into the penalty box cut short by a tumbling dive by the Portuguese player, rightly ignored by the referee. A perfectly timed offside trap barely denied the bottom club a goal on the half hour mark, Romagnoli slotting home under Luis Garcia to no avail. In the dying seconds of the first half Getafe broke down the right through Paunovic, and when Guiza shrugged off the last defender to bear down on goal the away fans were on their feet - but he could only roll his shot against the post.

1_7_angle.jpg
1_7_shot.jpg
1_7_post.jpg

Guiza so near but so far - first the angle and then the post stop him opening his account

Neither side made changes at half time, and the game to and froed for quarter of an hour, Sporting with the bulk of possession and Getafe looking to strike on the counter attack. Luis Garcia was forced into a fine save on the hour, Sa Pinto splitting the centre backs with a delightful throughball, but the hapless Deivid could only muster a weak shot. The visitors struck back with some neat interplay between Guiza and Paunovic creating some space for Pernía, but he couldn't find anybody with his cross, much to the forwards players' disappointment. Getafe had the game by the scruff of the neck and everything was going through Paunovic, but Caneira and Anderson Polga held firm, resulting in another blank scoresheet and away point for the Spaniards.

Man Of The Match: Cotelo (Getafe)

Sporting (4-4-2): Tiago Ferreira / Caneira (sub 89 Hugo), Anderson Polga, Miguel Garcia, André Marques (sub 89 Tello) / Custodio, Nani, Sa Pinto, Romagnoli (sub 89 Carlos Martins) / Deivid, Joao Alves

Getafe (4-5-1): Luis García / Pulido, Belenguer (c), Contra, Pernía / Celestini, Cubillo, Cotelo, Gavilan, Paunovic / Guiza

Post Match Comments: "We got lucky last week, not so lucky this week. Another day those two [Guiza shots] go in and we win comfortably. It's two points dropped really, people have said we are playing too defensively but we had the chances to win this one."

League Status: Getafe remain third, but Villareal have cut the gap to a point while Parma have opened up a 5 point gap on the Spaniards at the top. Any chance Getafe have of coming top now surely rests on a win against the Italians in their forthcoming league game.

Week 7, Season 1 - Division 2 Cup, 1st Round 2nd Leg
Nailbiter ends in penalty shoot-out
Fenerbahce SK 2-0 Getafe CF (2-2 agg; Getafe win 3-2 on pens)

(edit: Highlights available here (WMV approx. 7MB)

Matchday 8 saw the return leg of Getafe's D2 First Round cup tie against Fenerbahce. Armed with a 2-0 lead from the first leg, the Spaniards made three changes looking to rest players. Paredes, Diego Rivas and Nano all returned to the starting lineup to face a Fenerbahce side sure to be giving everything to overturn the deficit. Getafe lined up in their change red & white quarters strip in front of a hostile crowd at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

The opening minutes saw a predictable pattern of play as the hosts tried to force the same high tempo and pressure that caused the visitors so many problems in their recent league game, while Getafe were comfortable sitting on the ball and rolling passes around in midfield. Fenerbahce's efforts to unleash the pace of Anelka were being thwarted by the negative approach of the visitors, who regularly had men back in numbers to cut out anything even remotely dangerous. The French international did find his way in with 5 minutes remaining in the first half, but could only drag his shot harmlessly wide of the post. Getafe then went close at the other end, as a Diego Rivas free kick just flew over the bar, although Volkan probably had it covered. The visitors went into half time the happier, dominating possession and with only the one Anelka shot to worry them.

Getafe nearly put the tie beyond doubt at the start of the second half, when Diego Rivas floated a corner onto the head of Guiza who could not climb high enough and forced his header over the bar. They soon regretted missing the chance, as the home side took the lead via Anelka, who brushed aside a weak Diego Rivas challenge and fired into the bottom corner. On the replay Catalayud will be disappointed he didn't make a better effort at saving it, but that didn't matter to the home fans, who were now in full voice expecting a famous comeback victory.

1_8_anelkashot.jpg
1_8_anelkashot2.jpg
1_8_anelkagoal.jpg

Anelka opens the scoring and puts Getafe firmly on the back foot

If the visitors were perturbed by conceding their first goal this season, they didn't show it, and Nano went close with a header just a few minutes later. Appiah then threaded a ball into Anelka down the right hand side but the goalscorer had just strayed offside. The game continued to flow from end to end, and the visitors were the next to spurn a golden chance, Guiza with some good work closing down and finding Paunovic clean through on goal, but the Serb could only scoop his shot over the bar. A tiring Nano was then replaced by Redondo as Getafe tried to stay fresh. Fenerbahce were trying to make their big push for an equaliser but could not seem to get hold of the ball at all, and Cotelo should have done better for the away side when he dragged a shot wide looking for the bottom corner. The continued missed chances then came back to haunt them. When Zafer ambled onto a long through ball it looked as if Catalayud had it well covered - only for him to fumble the ball and Zafer to gleefully tap the ball into an open net. Getafe looked shell shocked as their opponents had levelled the tie on aggregate in injury time, and the stadium erupted in noise.

Clearly rattled, manager Leigh Butler made two changes before extra time began, Coelho replacing Guiza (who had played well and was perhaps unfortunate to be hauled off), and Riki coming on for Cotelo. The two subsitutes nearly had an explosive impact, Coelho miscontrolling a Riki through pass when he really should have at least forced an effort on goal. That was the only chance of a tired extra time, and both sides went to penalties.

The first four penalties were all scored, but when Appiah hit the bar Redondo had the chance to strike a crucial blow. Unfortunately the pressure seemed to get to him and he crashed his penalty against the post. The stage was then set for someone to make themselves a hero - and Catalayud made up for his earlier howler with two fine saves from Marco Aurelio and Mehmet Yozgatli to see Getafe into the semi final. Grateful for the keeper's Herculean effort, he was mobbed by his teammates, who knew that they had dodged a bullet in this one.

1_8_catalayudhero.jpg

Hero of the hour, Getafe goalkeeper Catalayud celebrates with teammates

Man of the Match: Zafer (Fenerbahce)

Fenerbahce (4-3-1-2): Volkan / Luciano, Can Arat, Onder Turaci (sub Tuncay 73), Umit Ozat / Serkan Balci, Mehmet Yozgatli, Marco Aurelio / Appiah / Anelka, Zengin (sub Zafer 82)

Getafe (4-5-1): Catalayud / Pulido, Belenguer (c), Paredes, Matellan / Diego Rivas, Cubillo, Cotelo (sub Riki 90), Nano (sub Redondo 73), Paunovic / Guiza (sub Coelho 90)

Penalty shootout (Fenerbahce first): Tuncay scored (1-0), Coelho scored (1-1), Anelka scored (2-1), Paunovic scored (2-2), Appiah hit bar, Redondo hit post, Marco Aurelio saved, Riki scored (2-3), Mehmet Yozgalti saved.

Post Match Comments: Despite the victory, this draining match can hardly have been ideal preparation for this week's crucial league game against leaders Parma - not only has the run without a goal extended to three games, but the defence has been breached for the first time this season. Criticism is sure to continue about coach Butler's defensive approach, while Gica Craioveanu will be screaming for a return to the starting lineup.

Cup Update: Getafe will face bottom club Sporting in the semi final, while Deportivo La Coruna face Lazio.

Another great report, how many does Milito have for you at this point in the season btw?

Cheers mate, I'm enjoying your story a lot though, really is very well written. As for my goal machine Milito, I believe that he has 7 in the league a few in the cup.

Watch this space though for more Milito magic.

Thanks a lot! I picked up an option file from the downloads forum, so I think he was created in that. He's looked pretty useful, he's shown some good aerial ability so far. Once Gica goes (presumably at the end of this season) he'll be in the running for the starting position.

Again, thanks a lot! LOL that's twice as many goals as my team put together :) well played.

Nice highlights package there. Well put together, the picture is very good too. You did go close in the second half to snatching an away goal I see, though Zafer's goal must have been a right suckerpunch in the final minute. Congrats on the shootout win.

CUP SEMI FINAL : Strasbourg 0 | Metz 1 (Carlitos 66')

Advantage Metz, as a double substitution midway through the 2nd half proved the catalyst for a narrow 1st leg victory. After a frenetic first period, which saw goalline clearances, a couple of fine saves and an extraordinary miss from Diane, 0-0 looked to be the most likely outcome.

However just after the hour mark, Svensson brought on Walter and Carlitos and the little Iberian got the all important touch, to a move made deep in Southern Spain.

Kepa took the ball on his chest from a Paisley long ball, moved out wide and played a low ball across the box. His Sevillian strike partner was able to get across his marker and plant a firm diving header under the keeper's legs for a vital away goal.

In the other semi final, Anderlecht came back from a goal down to win 2-1 against Caen, leaving both second legs nicely poised.

Svensson swept of his feet by sultry senorita

Allegations of have risen in recent days of a blossoming relationship between Anders Svensson and latin TV beauty Nani Gaitán.

a20050728173044.jpg

Svensson, who was in Andulusia a fortnight ago tieing up a double deal for Sevilla's Kepa and Carlitos, is rumoured to have met and romanced the curvaceous brunette, during a stay at the 5 star Hotel Alhambra.

TV180--180x370.jpg

Gaitán who is a presenter on TVE's Sabado Noche live entertainment show, apparently fell for the charm and good looks of the Swede, calling him, according to a trusted source "my blond Viking".

Her co-presenter, Josema Yuste spoke warmly of his loved up colleague, who he admits is "quite a catch, but also fairly high maintenance".

Nani_Gaitan_048.jpg

Svensson, who had appeared to have have been discreet about any love interest since his arrival in the Lorraine, may struggle to keep quiet details of the pair's whirlwind romance. The Spanish gossip columns and multitude of celebrity focused day time shows have already begun to crank into action, and with Metz struggling for form, attention of this nature could be detrimental to any chance of avoiding the foot of the Ligue 2 table.

Re: The All New PES5 Master League Thread.

Svensson seems to have problems staying focussed on his difficult task in Lorraine...do i smell an Iberian adventure???

Re: The All New PES5 Master League Thread.

you have a keen nose my friend, but i think in this instance, Svensson is just temporarily letting the little general (see Joey in Friends!) dictate his career.

I know what you mean mate, Joey is a Legend.

Hope you stay with Metz looking forward to see if you can guide yourself out of trouble, abit like Everton did this year after their poor start.

Whatever happens im sure it will be entertaining mate.

BTW, Ive got Nancy next with Strasbourg not looking forward to that, if memory serves me correctly in your three meetings with them you have lost two and drawn one, so that should be fun.

First matchday win Sunderland

Sunderland-Birmingham (14MB)

RL]

Stadium of Light
Attendance: 49,000

Lineups:

Sunderland lineup:

K.Davis
Delap--Caldwell--Breen--Hoyte
Lawrence---Whitehead---Bassila---Arca
Le Tallec----Elliot

Birmingham lineup:

Maik Taylor
Tebily--Melchiot--Martin Taylor--Lazaridis
Dunn--Butt--Izzet--Pennant
DJ Campbell----Heskey

First half:

On a cold and wet night, Sunderland kicked off for the first time this season, in front of a sold out Stadium of Light. The first few minutes were nothing exciting, with Sunderland passing around carefully, afraid to make mistakes. At the 21th minute, Birmingham defence leader Mario Melchiot got injured and was replaced by the young Paint. Two minutes later, Sunderland finally managed to break through the Birmingham defence. Rory Delap gave a long pass towards Le Tallec, who controlled the ball and passed to Elliot. Elliot turned away from Paint and beat Maik Taylor with a low, powerful shot. Birmingham didn't look shocked by the goal, and started to play more offensively orientated. However, at the 28th minute the referee made a big mistake by giving Sunderland a penalty kick, Taylor barely hit Elliot. Elliot walked up to the spot to take it, but he missed and Maik Taylor stomped the ball away, and it was justice. At the 42th minute Birmingham created their first attack of the match, with Izzet passing the ball towards DJ Campbell, and he chipped the ball beautifully over Davis' head, and it was 1-1. Both teams seemed to be content with an equal half time score.

Second half:

After the tea, both teams looked fresh and replenished and ready for the second half. The second half had barely started, with Sunderland getting a corner kick. Lawrence decided to take it, and he crossed the ball low in the penalty area, where Le Tallec could head the ball in the goal, 2-1.

letallec8ky.jpg

Le Tallec, the man from the 2-1.

After the goal, the new Sunderland manager decided it was time to make a substitution, he replaced Stephen Elliot with Jon Stead, a striker who doesn't scores often. Sunderland changed their strategy to Counter Attack, now that Birmingham chose to play in a full attacking style. However, the Sunderland defence was strong and managed to stop most DJ Campbell rushes.
And at the 72th minute, it was Sunderland who scored 3-1, meaning Birmingham dreams were over. Jon Stead, the sub, scored from a succesfull Sunderland counter attack. After that, the game was over and Jon Stead even scored 4-1, a final score that gives a wrong idea from this game, as Birmingham had 62% possesion, but they didn't manage to convert their possesion into goals. A good result for the new Sunderland manager.

Sunderland-Birmingham City 4-1

Re: The All New PES5 Master League Thread.

Week 7, Season 1 - Division 2
Late show blows title race wide open
Getafe CF 1-0 Parma FC

[highlights available here (7MB WMV file)]
With the halfway mark in the season approaching, Getafe welcomed leaders Parma to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. The Italian outfit had only lost once and had won their other 5 games, with league top scorers Delvecchio and Morfeo running riot. After their gruelling mid-week cup tie, a visit from this deadly duo was the last thing the Spanish side would have wanted. Tena came in to replace the jaded Pulido at centre back, Craioveanu got his wish and returned to the starting lineup, and Redondo replaced Cotelo on the right wing. Parma made the surprising move of dropping Delvecchio, replacing him with Corradi.

Despite the visitors' form, it was the home side who opened the brighter, Paredes forcing Guardalben into a neat save with a quarter of an hour on the clock. Corradi struck back for the away side, but under good pressure from Belenguer he could only hit a fairly weak shot at Catalayud. Getafe manufactured a good chance on the half hour mark, Redondo drifting a fine cross over from the right which Nano threw himself at but could only find the chest of a defender. Morfeo looked to open the scoring just before half time, but got his left foot shot hopelessly wrong, and it nearly went out for a throw in it was so wide of the target. With the very last kick of the first half Craioveanu curled a decent effort just wide of the left hand post after Paunovic had put him through.

Half time came and went with no changes. Craioveanu soon had the best chance of the game presented to him, when Nano's cross found him with pinpoint precision, but the veteran striker could only head the ball straight down and it bounced agonisingly wide of the goal. Corradi then clipped the angle of post and bar with a fierce shot, but probably should have done better with the chance. Paunovic then looked to put in Craioveanu with a slide rule pass but Guardalben was quickly off his line to clear the danger. And the Romanian wasted another good chance shortly afterwards when he fired wide after more good work by Paunovic. His number came up shortly afterwards, as he was replaced by Guiza. Parma responded by bringing on league top scorer Delvecchio for the quiet Morfeo after Corradi had put a free header straight into Catalayud's arms. Despite this Getafe were on top of the game but as in recent weeks must have wondered if they were ever going to score.

Parma thought they had a winner through Bolano in injury time, but Getafe's offside trap held up to deny them. Then finally a break went for the home side. Cubillo stepped up to take a free kick harmlessly far away from goal in the dying seconds, but his chipped pass evaded everyone, including Guardalben, and nestled in the corner to give Getafe a vital three points. As unexpected as the winner was, it was just rewards for Getafe's hard work and another clean sheet (making it 630 minutes of league football without conceding).

1_9_freekick1.jpg
1_9_freekick2.jpg
1_9_freekick3.jpg

Cubillo's innocuous free kick arcs towards goal, evading defenders, strikers, and goalkeeper on its way in

Man of the Match: Cubillo (Getafe)

Getafe (4-5-1): Catalayud / Tena, Belenguer (c), Paredes, Matellan / Diego Rivas, Cubillo, Redondo, Nano, Paunovic / Craioveanu (sub 62 Guiza)

Parma (4-4-2): Guardalben / Fernando Couto, Bonera, Coly (sub 86 Ferronetti), Pasquale / Savi, Bolano, Marchionni (sub 86 Bresciano), Grella / Morfeo (sub 62 Delvecchio), Corradi

Post Match Comments: "For a long time I thought it was going to be another one of those games, but I dont think you can argue with the result in the end. It should have been a more comfortable victory than it was but the three points are really all that matters."

League Update: Getafe's win has put them right back in the hunt for promotion at the halfway stage. Panathinaikos take over at the top on goal difference, tied on 15 points with Parma. Getafe sit in third only two points back, and Villareal have made their way to within 3 points of the leaders in fourth. At the bottom Sporting's hopeless form continues as they are still winless, and now 3 points adrift of 7th placed Fenerbahce.

Hard win Sunderland on West Bromwich

Stadium of Light

Lineups:

West Bromwich

Kuszckzak,
Albrechtsen, Davies, Clement, Robinson,
Kamara, Kozak, Inamoto, Wallwork, Campbell,
Kanu

Sunderland

Davis,
Arca, Cardwell, Breen, Hoyte
Miller, Whitehead, Bassila, Delap
Le Tallec, Stead

First half:

With a slightly changed lineup, Sunderland kicked off in front of a half filled Stadium of Light. The beginning of the match was quite exciting, with a few chances for both sides, with Delap shooting over the bar for Sunderland and an Inamoto free kick hitting the bar. After that the game became tougher, which resulted in Clement getting a yellow card. From 22 m, it was Arca who hit the post, and the rebound was headed over by Jon Stead. Clement wouldn't be the only getting a booking in the first half, both Cardwell and Hoyte would get one as well.

Arca's Free kick hit the post.

Second Half:

With new energy both teams started the second half with alot of attractive attacking play, which resulted in alot of chances. Sunderland were incredible lucky when Kanu missed in front of an open goal and Kevin Campbell's shot hit the post, but Sunderland got some chances as well, with a nice long range shot from Arca and a nice Jon Stead header. At the 71th minute, the game would change, it was Clement with a sliding tackle from behind on Jon Stead, and Clement got his second yellow card from the game, meaning he had to go to the showers. The free kick was taken short by Arca, and Justin Hoyte started a nice, impressive solo over the right wing. When he broke through over the wing, he gave a brilliant through pass on Le Tallec, who didn't fail in front of Kuszcak, 1-0. After that, West Bromwich got a penalty kick in the 89th minute and Breen got a red card, but Henri Kamara missed, and Davis became hero of the day.
Another good, hard to get result, the manager is very content with his formation today, as they take the lead in Division 2.

Metz 1 (Doumbe 81' og) | Rennes 2 (Kallstrom 39', Briand 45')

The cracks are deepening, as Metz continue to ship goals and points with no obvious solution to the crisis at hand. A 2-1 home defeat by Rennes, with two first half goals conceded, keeps Les Grenats stuck to the foot of the table, and there are board room mutterings that behind the scenes that "the tactics board has gone out the window!".

It is the first sign of internal dissent over the burgeoning relationship between Svensson and Gaitán, that is potentially costing the club a lack of motivation from their coach just when they need it most.

The visitors illustrated their credentials as champions elect with two sucker punch goals after soaking up 40 minutes of sustained pressure, however once Mayebi's net had been breached twice, it was abundantly clear that the match was as good as over.

Gueye and Carlitos both tried manfully to claw their way back, but despite a Doumbe own goal, when the Cameroon international was unlucky to deflect a Ouadah cross past Isaksson, the northerners were able to leapfrog Anderlecht back to the Ligue 2 summit.

Le Mans 1 (Matsui 87') | Metz 1 (Kepa 25')

Kepa opened his account for his new club on 25 minutes after aggressively powering home a header from just inside the box.

Denissen had looked up and floated in a great cross and the young shaven headed Iberian out muscled Cerdan to give Pele no chance in the home side's goal.

It looked as if this solitary strike would be enough to give Metz their first league victory since the opening day, but Matsui clearly had other ideas, after sliding in Tulio's mishit shot late on.
