PES 2017 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

Just finished my Pre-order. : )

Regards to AI, it's obvious that many have not played Pes 16 extensively, as if they did, they would know exhibition is easy mode compared to other modes. Yes even on Superstar.

Also, it goes without saying but seems like it should be mentioned again that, the type of games you get will depend on how the user plays. Enjoy. : )

Am i right in saying you can't drag players into positions in tactics anymore?

Also score this full manual today. Was off my seat.

Everyone needs to calm down with this difficulty thing. It's ALWAYS much harder in master league or cup comps. We can judge there. Full game comes out next week.

Scripting ahoy! :D

Hey to the Australian's out there, where are you guys getting the game from??
JB Hi fi has the earliest day ive seen, ie. Thurs 15th, but who knows if that's guaranteed, and its $89ish dollars (AU).
Mind you, ive contacted a store online selling it for $75ish, and the guy told me his suppliers have told him he may get the game on Tuesday 13th :).. not guaranteed, but express post would mean id get it 14th :)..thatd be awesome.. he told me to contact him on Monday.. will do.

Which store is that? I think I'm going to go digital again though.

I still didn't see it in the video tho. Your post here made your point better than the video did.

Are tactics overdone, over programmed tho? Do you think there should be a carpet decrease on tactical adherence, or by individual cases? (I opt for the latter)

I definitely am opting for the latter.

Yes, the video was a different format btw, it was what I stated at the very beginning, I would just discuss some things that have been on my mind, and have a random gameplay in the background, with the occasional of pointing something out, should it occur.

Jeepers so many words so little sense.

As clever as we are we do not understand the programming behind PES. If it were that simple EA or someone else would have reproduced it ages ago. Anyone can highlight an issue but understanding the knock on effect of "correcting" any little niggles go beyond our scope of understanding. Also keep in mind that what you may perceive as an issue is actually fine for someone else and your fix may be considered a flaw.

I am all for debating perceived flaws but there comes a point where you are going to suck the enjoyment out of the game for yourself.

Imagine playing GTA and being concerned that you have driven over 18 people in 12 minutes and the police haven't started a man hunt for you yet.

It's a game, enjoy it for what it is. If you can't get over it you better of taking up another hobby.

Bingo, great post Zee

Just ordered the £9.99 option file. Contains all tactics and I can't be arsed to do it all myself. Will be with me on release day.

Wait, the actual release date for this is the 15th? I've booked a long bloody weekend off work assuming it was the 13th and it would would arrive early. Sigh.

With Regards to the AI issues people have, I can completely understand them. If Konami said they will try fix these issues but it might affect other aspects of the game, i'd be totally against it, i'd rather say to them wait for next year and don't patch PES2017.

I am very happy to accept what is, and not change a thing this year, as I am loving this game and it's "just one more match" feel. Too many times i've been disappointed with the final game after loving the demo.

Also I went to try Adv. shooting on PES 2016, after falling in love with it in PES2017. And to no surprise it was rubbish, due to 3 factors (ball physics, goal keepers, animations) these have been remarkably improved in PES2017 that's why Adv. Shooting has transformed.

Ordered mine from shopto.net so will hopefully have it on the 14th. Ive booked 16th off to hammer it!

09:06 thats pretty cool

Nice vid!
I like the ball physics on the goal at 4:48.

Full manual baby!
Beuties Harley.
Thats why i always bitch with people who whines about "over powered/on rails" and plays assisted.
Once you go manual...

Great goals Harley!
Yes, I gotta admit I´ve been one of those whiners, but since I play PA0, that on rails passing is no more :).
I enjoy it a lot more that way.
Even basic shooting is enough for me in the demo, I might switch to manual shooting some time as well, cause after I´ve seen Harley´s goals it itches me.

Yeah, I´ve stumbled about this too. 13th for America, 15th for Europe :(
Why actually?

My only problem with Advanced Shooting is that it aims too much for the corners or to the posts....I don't get those which are aimed a bit to the left...and not always at the corners...or am I doing it wrong? Cause a lot of my shots goes and hits the bar or the post (or miss completely, which is fine)...not many are closer in...so most of my shots either go in, go wide, hit the post (or are deflected by the defender)...not many are needed to be saved by the keeper...

That's a terrible argument. Stop playing games because they have flaws? Come on. If that's the case, as a gamer who "enjoys their hobby properly", why are you buying PES 2017? PES 2016 is a football game, why isn't that enough for you? It has flaws but who cares, right?

The GTA example is a terrible one too, sports games are designed to recreate reality. If it was all about fun, we'd all be playing Mario Strikers Charged on the Wii and talking about whether Bowser or Mario is better up-front.

You were even one of the guys saying Superstar was too easy not long ago; now you're arguing against someone pointing out one of the reasons why! "So many words so little sense"? Why are you insulting someone for looking at the mechanics of a game they love? What's wrong with trying to help make the perfect football game? Nobody's forcing you to think about this stuff.

you can clearly see in replays the ball doesnt come into contact with the player alot of the times. anyone annoyed by this? it kills the immersion.

also, i havent seen one drop of rain splash off the net in rainy weather as boasted in their press release. multiple angles, multiple replays...am i playing the wrong demo?

I come here for the deeper discussion, if you don't like it then fair enough. No need to knock it, because it's all valuable - more so if Konami listen, obviously... What's wrong with trying to make the perfect game?

Because the perfect football game will never exist. Ever.

Just look at the reaction to this demo - some are still saying the GK's are too easy to beat when the overwhelming majority agree they are great this year.

I actually agree with the sentiment that you should just focus on enjoying the game instead of over-analysing every line of code and subsequent reaction on the screen. It's no different to watching a movie - if I'm sitting there and the plot or characters and full of inconsistencies, and that's what I'm focussing my attention on, then that tells me I'm not enjoying it. However, if I can sit through Armageddon and not worry about the silly plot holes because the entertainment is there to keep my attention on it, then that's fine. I could watch a film like that and deliberately tear it to pieces but what would be the point? You don't go into a movie like that expecting documentary-style realism, and the same should be said of games. If any game, especially football games, recreated realism so perfectly then I simply wouldn't buy it. They are supposed to be fun as a top priority - where's the fun in playing a football match where both sides are delivering a turgid 0-0 will no goal-scoring opportunities? Sure - it should happen in the game from time to time but nowhere near as frequently as it does it real life. Imagine an F1 game where the player gets off the line in first place and stays there for the whole race - realistic yes, but how is that fun?

I really don't understand those of you that are analysing the game frame by frame to see if a DM has taken up the pixel-perfect position (for example). Just play the game to the tactics you think will work and enjoy it. I want PES to be as realistic as possible, but only up to a point. I don't care if CR7 is not wearing the correct colour boots, I don't care if Neymar's tattoos are not exactly right, I don't care if the players don't plant their feet with the expected weight, I don't care if the AI's CB can hit a first-time rocket at goal from 25 yards out and score (which is possible FYI). If you want to play a perfect football game, you'll be waiting a long time. Why do we buy it every year? Because it's (hopefully) superior to the last version and edges us ever closer to an overall rounded experience. It will NEVER be perfect for everyone.

+100
everything i always wanted to say.
just like watching clips on youtube of movie mistakes. i've always wondered how these people enjoy the movies if their goal is to just point out the mistakes the director made.
i am often very happy when its about a movie i've already seen cause it really takes away from the pleasure when watching one afterwards.
like you said the perfect game doesn't exist. (some reactions to this demo serve as solid proof)

Because the perfect football game will never exist. Ever.
But there are things that can be fixed that would undoubtedly improve the game and potentially the realism without impacting on the fun - perhaps not easily, and maybe at the cost of breaking something else, as Zee rightly said. But if these things are well-documented, tested and proven, then Konami could end up finding a way to fix them. So discussing this stuff is vital. Otherwise, this thread would just be an echo chamber, with no mention of flaws allowed, and no point other than to add another "I like this game" to the pile (incidentally, I love the demo).

Point being - lots of people enjoy the analysis and if you don't, it's easy enough to ignore it without insulting someone's effort, isn't it.

Nobody is stopping you from enjoying the game.

I really don't understand those of you that are analysing the game frame by frame to see if a DM has taken up the pixel-perfect position (for example).
A) I don't understand the people who say the nets matter or the boots matter, but I don't tell those guys they need to stop talking about it.

B) It's not about being pixel-perfect, is it, or even perfect. It's about players in a certain role not functioning like they would in the real formation, therefore making that role a bit useless. And about games against top teams being easier to play against because they act "scared" with no consideration of your team's quality.

Put it like this - every team in FIFA plays the same way, and they play to the difficulty level rather than anything else. Everyone's happy to repeat that. But nobody is allowed to point out a flaw (or flaws) that could make Superstar pretty boring, when there's enough time for Konami to consider these videos? If it turns out it's a different story in the ML and none of this happens, then great, no harm done. But Adam has said that the demo code's final, so why not strike while the iron / programming fingers are hot?

Just play the game to the tactics you think will work and enjoy it.
Are you the games police?!

I want PES to be as realistic as possible, but only up to a point.
That's your opinion. Okay, I get that you don't want the game to be so realistic that each analog stick represents a leg and if you don't stroke them in perfect harmony your player falls over. That wouldn't be fun and games have to be fun. I see your point. But this is a discussion board and it's all about opinions, and more to the point, changing the positioning/mentality of a role in certain formations isn't going to destroy fun as we know it. There's only so much realism you can incorporate before a game becomes a chore, I get your point, but what's being pointed out in these videos you A) probably haven't noticed anyway, and B) wouldn't notice if it was changed. It's not going to stop the game being fun.

I don't care if CR7 is not wearing the correct colour boots, I don't care if Neymar's tattoos are not exactly right...
I don't see anyone pointing any of that out...

I don't care if the AI's CB can hit a first-time rocket at goal from 25 yards out and score (which is possible FYI).
It is, you're right. A few have also pointed out that most professional footballers can hit the ball with power, so I agree with you on that one. It's only the accuracy I'm concerned with personally, but in my personal opinion, the demo is fine in this regard. People will disagree, and if they want to put together some analysis like Matt does to prove their point, I'm happy to be proven wrong. But I agree with that observation.

But there's a difference between something "being possible" and something happening often. Too many goals from 35 yards out and it's a problem in terms of realism, and fun (it gets boring). 35 yard goals "being possible" is fine. Big teams backing off on Superstar is pretty much permanent (once you've got the ball).

It will NEVER be perfect for everyone.
It won't, again, you're right*. But, to reiterate - things that would undoubtedly improve the game in terms of realism without ruining the fun - things that are well-documented, well-tested and proven, that can be done without breaking the game - that's 100% a good thing. Things like giving the defensive midfielder more intelligence aren't going to stop the game being fun, they're going to make it better.

*Sliders would help there, but that's a whole other debate. ;)

For the record - I love the demo, and can't wait for release day. I'm enjoying it immensely. No analysis will stop me enjoying it immensely. But this is a brilliant community with guys who want nothing but to see PES get better and better, and it's great to see that commitment, especially when Konami seem more likely to listen now than ever before. I don't think it's fair for anyone to criticise their efforts or suggest they "stop playing games", any more than I'd think it was fair for someone to tell the producer of some video highlights showing how great the game is to "stop overlooking the flaws" and "stop having fun".

But it's not about being pixel-perfect, is it, and it never would be. Or even "perfect", in reality. It's about players in a certain role not being able to function like they would in the real formation, therefore making that role a bit useless. And about games against top teams being easier because they act scared with no consideration of your team's quality.

Whilst I agree the discussion is positively bringing the game closer to reality, there are instances I'm afraid where some are effectively demanding updates for the silliest of things. Yes these things could enhance the experience but some people are using these little flaws as full-blown reasons not to play the game. It's absurd.

In terms of the DM role - that is one example that confirms the game will never be perfect for everyone. In my limited time with the 2017 demo, the DM position seems more or less fine. I understand you see an issue with it (rightly or wrongly) but I simply wouldn't let this ruin my enjoyment. Maybe the dev's don't have the ability to fix this because, if they did, they would have done it years ago wouldn't they? We all assume that because technology has improved so quickly that developer ability has grown at the same rate. Maybe it hasn't. Maybe a different developer with more talented staff would be able to code this particular aspect a lot better.

Looking back on PES 5 and 6, there were so many things about those games that were unrealistic but there's a reason they are held up as classics. They were fun and had that magic "just one more go" feeling - something that appears to have been lacking recently. Until I got a PS4 this summer, I was still playing PES 6 four or five times a week even though newer football games (including FIFA) represented the sport better. Why? Because it was so much fun despite not being as realistic as more recent football games. I don't think it's fair that a small aspect in a game is effectively held against it as a whole when it does so much right. Maybe next year the DM role will be improved to your likings but others' may then comment how it has ruined the ebb and flow of a match. It's a no-win situation.

This is a straw man argument. Nobody's arguing over pixels of difference. Everybody's looking for realism up to a point, without sacrificing fun. It's just that they're more willing to put the effort in to find that point than you.

They're arguing about the principle of how the game positions players, how a tactic works versus what it's trying to represent in real life, how the game flows as the ball is won or lost. It's not just fancy shit that we have no business getting involved in, and it's not a needless embellishment which doesn't really change anything - it's the difference between having two or three defenders when a team counters. It's not pedantry to point that out.

For the record I think it's fine that the DM is joining the CBs - it's Konami trying to represent a specific tactic in a way that produces more team individuality, and it might not work for every team but it's cool and unique that they're including stuff like this and the false fullbacks. Over time I'm sure Konami will add more advanced tactics, maybe making this specific thing about a DM dropping back into a more generic attacking option just like asking CBs to go up for free kicks.

It's not pedantry to identify that the CPU automatically switches from ATK-DEF level 4 to 2 the millisecond it loses the ball, thereby stopping the attackers from maintaining pressure up the pitch. It's something which would make significant improvements to the game without costing anything more than the time it takes to code in a 3-5 second timer and do a quick bit of QA to ensure that it works.

Also, just because there's a variety of opinions doesn't mean that it's futile trying to find the best way to do things. There's a very easy solution to that problem, which is to (a) understand that all opinions are not equal, and (b) that people's observations are more important than the conclusions they draw from them.

I get that some people don't really want to participate in discussions like this, or feel like it's all a bit over their head, or that they can't make a distinction between enjoying a game and seeing the need for improvement in certain areas. Some people have more analytical mindsets than others - sometimes to a fault, where they try to spot patterns without enough data or enough isolation of the variable they're trying to test for. Some people are happy to leave things mysterious and not ever really know.

But it's a primitive argument to say that the choice is either (a) to enjoy the game or (b) to work out what it's doing. They're not mutually exclusive, and it's anti-intellectualist rubbish to suggest that there's no place for (b) or that it doesn't actually yield any benefits when some people stand out from the crowd and put the effort in to explain where improvements should be made.

pointing out real flaws that need to be fixed is one thing but just pointing out the obvious isn't really helping is it.
some pointed out that when going for 50-50 balls your cursor jumps to another player and you often end up losing the ball (i've noticed that too).
sometimes when going up for a header it feels like your player isn't reacting which also makes you lose the header. these are what i feel like should be mentioned and send back as feedback to Konami to react up on.
mentioning the robotic animations is also an honest and good one
pointing out the obvious that we don't know how the mechanics work and how every tactic is set up and performed adds nothing to improving the game
another member posted that you should never have more ball possession then Barcelona cause that's unrealistic.
well if we wanna go that route then i would suggest really not playing sports games at all.
i am 2 out of 6 against Barcelona at the moment with River Plate using fixed tactics. imagine what will happen when the full game comes out and i can make them play like i want to.
in real life the chances of River Plate beating Barcelona are slim to none. what would be the logic in me pointing that out and saying it makes the game unrealistic.
in real life River Plate would maybe never use the tactics that i use so someone could even point that out. that tactics should be fixed to teams and coaches and we should not be able to change them.
so pointing out the obvious, that its a game doesn't really help improve the game at all.
it simply takes away from the enjoyment.
my opinion so hopefully no one feels too offended by it(or gets angry)

Are people going that far? I think everything being pointed out stands to improve the game, but by the same token, I can't wait for the full game and the demo isn't grating on me yet personally (when I had to force myself to enjoy the previous PES over these last few months). Is anyone saying they won't play the game because the DM's positioning isn't right? (Serious question, I've not seen that.)

I can understand that the ML will be frustrating if there's no recognition from the opposition that they should be able to destroy you, compacting their defence and midfield into a wall whenever you get the ball. (Speaking of realism vs fun, that's neither!) But I can't see the ML working that way, I imagine league position etc. has to have an effect. So I hope nobody has to "abandon" the game.

Looking back on PES 5 and 6, there were so many things about those games that were unrealistic but there's a reason they are held up as classics. They were fun and had that magic "just one more go" feeling - something that appears to have been lacking recently.
Yeah, I kept going back to PES 2013. Everything is more on-rails but I think that helps when it comes to the AI - less to process, more it can do with individuality etc... That feeling is definitely back for me with this demo.

pointing out real flaws that need to be fixed is one thing but just pointing out the obvious isn't really helping is it.
Just because it's obvious to us, absolutely does not mean it's obvious to Konami... Also, the DM positioning stuff definitely isn't obvious...

another member posted out that you should never have more ball possession then Barcelona cause that's unrealistic.

That's a great point, and it wouldn't be fun to get beat all the time playing as your favourite team - but to me, that's what difficulty levels are for. We can both be catered for. Top Player could be "difficult without making it impossible to pass the ball around" and Superstar "if you're a newly promoted team playing against Barcelona, you're going to get smashed" (without CPU cheating preferably).

One of the reasons I ended up preferring PES 2016 to FIFA, despite how many issues I have with the game, is because I walk into games against the big boys knowing I'm going to get destroyed (and vice versa). I got as much satisfaction from losing 1-0 against Man City (to a free kick) as I did from beating Watford 3-1 a month after (see the ML stories thread for the gory details).

I find it IMMENSELY fun if the game is realistic, and I keep losing with my team that isn't as good as the others in the league, but the team somehow manages to get enough points to stay up. That's my kind of achievement.

I don't know if anyone is doing that regarding the DM issue per se, but I have seen people stating in previous years they won't be parting with their cash just because stamina depletes too quickly (for example). They might be attention-seeking, who can say for sure? But my overall point is I think some people are looking TOO hard to find faults instead of just enjoying the game. It's one thing noticing flaws and quite another to actively go looking for them.

I doubt anyone would even notice the DM thing if Matt didn't make a video about it and shared it here. I mean, looking at positions in the radar than looking at their behavior in replays. Is the positioning really that bad, do you guys even feel it affecting your play? Does it affect so much on a 10-15 minute game? I understand people complaining about fouls, goalies and stuffs because you can feel the affect directly. I remember Adam saying that people nowadays are over analyzing things (even trailers) that it's scary.

Very interesting point.
I follow Matt´s posts with interest and he is doing a great job, specially in the sliders thread for the other game.
But to be honest,
I kind of skipped the last posts about analyzing that tactical behaviour.

It is not what I pay attention to that much, when I play the game.
I would notice the extremes, for example if my wing midfielders never would take part in an attack i.e. running into position or if I would make specific settings in tactics and my players wouldn´t react the way I have set them to.

Or like in the other game, when I tell my DM to stay back on attacks, but he would always come forward.

But I do understand that other people have different expectations and notice things and analyze them, which might not be that important to me.
And I respect that and I don´t talk it down.
