To be fair I don't think I'm expecting too much from the AI. At times it can be great. But in certain aspects i think it's worse than in the previous games. In no way can I defend the AI when COM defenders let my left-back jog the ball from the halfway line, past four players who just jog alongside me with no challenge coming in, and into the COM's six-yard box where not even their keeper bothers to come and meet my player. This is what I mean about the 'magic' bring removed from the game, the AI will provide a challenge and then randomly go AWOL which allows me to easily score, which isn't fun. If its worse than a previous game, on an older engine no less, then that's not expecting too much.
As for keepers, maybe it depends on the difficulty level. All previous PES games left you with the feeling that you can score from anywhere, even on Superstar, but here, in PES2014 on Superstar or Top Player, keepers are borderline invincible from further out than 20 yards, so much so that I've given up bothering.
But there are so many other AI issues, like the COM keeper refusing to come off his line. When theough on goal, I can score virtually every time because the keeper allows me to get so close to the goal that he can't stop me. This was the complete reverse of PES2013, where one v ones were a challenge.
All I can say is that the game must have bugs or huge ballancing issues, because 90% of all goals I score leave me feeling 'well that was a bit shit' for one reason or another, be it defenders running away from my attacker, keepers jumping out of the way of weak shots, or just staying on their goal line.
I agree, there are tons of fantastic things about the game for sure, but it all falls down when you get into the penalty box. If they can't get that right then there's pretty much nothing left as it undoes all the good work over the rest of the pitch. There's no point making a simulation of the game ventures away from that when in the act of scoring a goal, it should be the most fundamental part of a football sim.
