Yesterday evening I returned from a 3-week-vacation-trip and today I bought PES 2014 (xbox360-version), installed it and played my first 25-min-worldcup-match against Denmark on top-player, with speed on -1 and everything as manual as possible (ie. zero-bar, manual shooting...).
I skipped the demos, so this was all new to me, and I'm glad I skipped the demos, would be very limiting to have only 5 min-exhibition-matches.
While I was on vacation I read some of the mixed-reactions to PES 2014 here (through my smartphone) and I was a bit worried regarding framerate and input-lag.
But thankfully it's no issue at all for me on xbox360. No inputlag, no framerate-reduction in the last third of the pitch, all smooth and working as it should. Only framerate-issue I saw was when I rotated the camera in replay and the audience came into the picture.
It was just one competition match with 25 min, but I already could feel that there is a lot of depth to be discovered. It felt awesome to me, thanks to the new animation/physics-engine, the whole game feels more alive than ever. It feels similar to the way I feel on the pitch when playing football in reallife, it feels nearly real.
Even the AI is now way better in anticipating passing-routes and closing you down, so that as well brings the realism-feeling to a new level.
During the last stretches of the match, my players got tired and their passing-successrates took a dip, which is a nice and realistic touch. I only wished the stamina-fatigue-system to be realtime and individual for every player, but I guess we have to wait again for that one.
Repeatedly pressing the run-button made my player run faster and the ball got pushed ahead, feels intuitive and great.
Denmark had 45% possession and won 0:2 against me, but I wasn't really concentrated, as I was awed by the new controls and animations and possibilities. Regarding the CPU-AI, as I said it's imho now way better at midfield-play, blocking, intercepting, closing down.. compared to PES 2013. But I'm not yet convinced at the AI's ability to actually create opportunities, it felt a bit tame.
But hey this was the first match and it was only Denmark. It's still too early to judge.
As you can see I'm pretty excited regarding the game. It feels imho very organic, alive and deep.
Will report back once I have many more matches under the belt.
I also downloaded the demo for Fifa 14 and played a few matches. It felt like fifa 13 with a little bit more inertia and a little bit more variety in shooting.
It's a good footballgame, but I felt much more captivated by PES 2014.
The one thing it definitely got better than PES 2014 though are the physics of the goal-net.
P.S.: I also really liked to be greeted with that italian opera at the start of the game in PES 2014. Nice soundtrack-choice.
