Sadly we all know how the reviewing will go with the two games. I was just surprised that Edge, in all it's pretentious glory, also conveniently managed to overlook all of FIFA's problems, and then proclaim PES as still being dated. They, along with the majority of the gaming press, most likely played it for a day before rushing the review out. FIFA would instantly play the better in theory, I mean it's taken me ages to figure out the intricacies of PES and it's a vastly better game for that reason. Now that I know what I'm doing, PES feels far superior in gameplay terms. It plays more realistic, is just as hard without being as ludicrously frustrating and 'artificial' feeling, yet the gaming press will have had a day or so, found PES to be frustrating and clunky because they didn't know how to play it, or what controls did what, because you do need to learn these things. So the press will have been largely uninformed when reviewing, and it'll happen this year again. FIFA is instantly playable, but longer term it's no fun to play whatsoever, then there are constant massive bugs in the game's core game modes, which again magazines refuse to ever mention.
I remember in the PS2 days, PES was always vastly better than FIFA in gameplay terms, but FIFA sold more copies off the basis of flashy commentary, licences, music etc. That's still the case, except now the gaming press seem determined to tell the wider world that it stands on it's own as a simulation, which it doesn't. In that respect I'm glad PES' marketing this year seems more focused on promoting the game to those who care about gameplay rather than flashy videos advertising Manchester City's new kit in FIFA12 (can't believe they actually did that). Shows hopefully Konami won't get sucked into making PES like FIFA.
