I wouldn't be surprised if we did, and I don't think most of the Utd fans here would either. We're certainly going to step it up against United, there's no question of that.

Whether our players can step up enough is a different matter. I'm going to go for 1-1 draw, with Utd getting the first and us scoring around the 70th minute and throwing all kinds at Utd but not being able to create a chance.

I have mixed feelings about this weekend's big game, looks like a make-or-break-season game for us. All I want is an entertaining game, no 0-0 dull game.

The fact is we have mediocre players playing poor - Reira, Lucas, Kuyt, Aurellio, Babel, Voronin to name a few - are NOT the players who will win you a league. Its always going to be this way until we get in some quality. It's just now they arent doing so well, so we play PISS poor. Doesn't help having no super man or torres in either. I have no doubt we will come good again and probably have a great second half to the season but it's never going to be good enough.

Reina has been Good this season and hes a worldclass keeper.

In no footballing universe is Aurelio a mediocre player.

Also, I thought Aurelio was good last night and is in general and Lucas is going to be class if your fans dont dent his friggin' confidence too much.

I think you'll beat us or it'll be a draw, that's just how football works. Dags, remember what I was saying about your poor preseason and how it can drag on into the season... can you see what I meant now? What starts off as small doubts with a few players gradually breeds through the whole team and now look! 4 defeats in a row and 6 in total going into a match against the champions (so that could quite easily change to 5 and 7.)!

I honestly don't think this form will last but I'm enjoying it while I can, come Sunday night if you've beat us you'll all be loving it, despite whats gone before.

For me, Rafa still hasn't addressed the squad's lack of strength in depth in certain areas.

That's where the cheap £5-7m deals that Fergie got with "unknown" players like Vidic and Evra come in handy.

They'll start off as squad players providing necessary cover before developing into world class players.

Rafa, for all his whinging about money, doesn't have that same ability to spot young talent and get them in cheap before reaping the rewards later on.

Yossi? Started out as a squad player in his first season, and is now one of our most important players?

Hmmm...I wouldn't really class him as unknown though, if you get my point.

He's certainly been a class act, nonetheless.

But like you guys go on about how important Gerrard and Torres are to the team, then why didn't Rafa bring in someone as back-up, especially for Torres.

There's a certain player that was available for free, already knew the club inside out, and would definitely have given his first preference to 'Pool if he had got an offer.

His name escapes me...

I think this is Liverpool problem, the pressure of fans, yes I agree with you some of these players are overrated.

And thats the thing they came with huuuge expectations on them, maybe not Aurelio, and guess what he is one with higher rating.

But thats not the point, the point is that if players don't follow that expectation, they simply have no support to at least be a squad player. The pressure is as huuuge as the expectation was before, and they just can't play decent football.

And people are doing with Aquilani already, don't get me wrong I know how big clubs work, you want to take all from your player.

But you rather send those players out and keep El Zhar and N'Gog as squad players?

Champions are build with squad, Liverpool could be a bit more patient with some players, look at Nani, Valencia, Kalou, Malouda etc
They haven't been great as they could be, but they still there, and they are at least more reliable than El Zhar when their club needs them, they scored a couple of important goals, had some good games.

But thats just my opinion.

What about Insua, what about Mascherano who was abandonned in West Ham and what about Xabi Alonso who played for Real Sociedad ? What about Agger ? What about Reina ?

Insua is hardly in the same bracket as Vidic and Evra is he?

Mascherano cost you at least £17m so doesnt count, and everyone knew he was very good regardless of what happened at West Ham.

Since you signed Agger he has played about 20 games less than that injury prone loser Michael Owen has over those 4 or 5 seasons so you cant exactly include him.

Alonso was just over £10m but fair enough, good signing. Shame Rafa wanted rid of him in the summer of 2008 and has now lost him just when he was looking a world class player.

Reina was £7m which is a good buy.

Skrtel is alright but he's nowhere near world class (yet?).

Vidic? I'll give you that one. But I actually think hes over-rated and would struggle in a lesser team.

I think both Ferdinand and Vidic individually are overrated. What makes United's defense so good, is actually the whole team. The way the press, they way they track back, the whole team, that's why they're so good. Physically they're astonishing. They can run back into their own penalty box to defend, and within a few seconds break with numbers forward.

Ferdinand was the best defender in Europe in 2008 without a doubt. I agree our team makes life easier for our defence and that both Rio and Vidic have not looked so impressive at times this season and last but still I would not say they are not overrated.

It's John Terry who wins UEFA Defender of the Year every season!!!

Just think with United, it's more of the defensive line rather than the defenders themselves (and that's EXACTLY how it should be). Individually, I just don't think Vidic and Ferdinand are in the same league as the likes of Nesta, and Samuel, or even Carvalho.

I dont think any current player is as good as Nesta in his prime. However, like you say football is a team game and when in form there certainly aren't many better central defensive partnerships than Rio & Vidic.

Personally, I think Ferdinand is quite a lot better than Vidic (although he has a few years on him) and I think the one of the reasons Vidic got so many plaudits last season and why people rate him higher than Rio is because he's the type of 'brave', 'heroic' player that Joe Public loves (think Terry/Carragher).

In 2008 when we won the leauge and CL double, on an individual level Ferdinand was IMMENSE and his role in that success cannot be stated enough. Ronaldo, Rooney and co took the plaudits but he was equally important and having spent the majority of the season as stand-in captain his influence was HUGE.

Like I said, I agree Vidic is slightly overrated, and he's definitely looked shaky against certain players lately, but for £7m and from relative obscurity he was a cracking signing.

Totally agree that Vidic + Evra, at 12M odd was an incredible coup.

Though I think Reina + Agger was just as good (as long as Agger remains uninjured now).

Regardless, our central defenders arn't even compared to Stoke's. Wish we'd had gone for Shawcross.

Potentially yes, but you can't say Reina and Agger are just as good a unknowntoworldclass-bargain-transfer-pairing when Agger never plays because he's perma-crocked!

I mean just look at what Paddy and Vida have achieved and the level they are playing at in comparison.

About Reina, he still makes some dodgy decisions, I mean what the fuck was he playing at for Lyon's equaliser on Tuesday?!?! He made two fantastic saves before it finally went in but the pathetic flap at the ball that led to the cross was just poor, and it's not like he's not prone to the odd flap. He is good otherwise though, I'll give you that.

I was gonna say Shawcross would never sign for you as a former United player but I just read he's from Chester and grew up in Wales so there's a possibility he supported Liverpool as a boy, so meh!

Reina's absolutely fantastic. Fuck if he's made one dodgy decision in I don't know how many games. He's brilliant. No one I'd rather have as our keeper. It's the guys in front of him, that have been pathetic.

I have a question guys. Do you think that Carragher should keep playing ? He has been pathetic since the start of the season and he is involved in every goal they scored us.
Plus, what do you think we should do in the transfer market, buy a defender or a player to cover Torres when he is injured ?
