Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers names Andy Carroll in squad for Europa League qualifier with FC Gomel
Andy Carroll’s inclusion in Liverpool’s Europa League qualifier will not impact on his eligibility in the competition for another club this season.
Carroll was named in the travelling squad to face FC Gomel of Belarus as Brendan Rodgers leads Liverpool in his first competitive game as manager on Thursday.
Providing there are no acceptable late bids prior to Liverpool boarding their flight on Wednesday morning, he is likely to participate in the qualifying round.
Uefa rules do not bar players from involvement in the group stages if they have featured in the qualifying rounds for another team.
That frees Carroll to play without complicating any potential return to Newcastle United, who are also in the Europa League.
Rodgers may have little option but to use Carroll given how few striking options are available to him, with Luis Suárez and Craig Bellamy on Olympic duty. He has teenager Adam Morgan and could use new signing Fabio Borini, although, like Carroll, he is short of training time.
Although interest in Carroll from Newcastle and West Ham is well documented, all the indications point to a drawn-out affair in determining his future. The West Ham bid of a £2 million loan, leading to an additional £16 million permanent deal should the Hammers stay up, was lodged over a week ago.
Liverpool have not yet responded positively to the offer as it depends on whether Carroll is prepared to move to London.
They have been anticipating a rival bid from Newcastle, who are evidently pursuing their own transfer strategy led by owner Mike Ashley in the hope the Merseyside club will accept a lower bid if Carroll refuses to go anywhere but St James’ Park.
It would appear all parties are hearing precisely what they want to hear in what may become a transfer saga. In the North-East, there is a belief Carroll is only interested in returning home. On Merseyside, it is suggested he is prepared to stay and fight for his future. In east London, the fact his agent, Mark Curtis, also represents West Ham manager Sam Allardyce and Kevin Nolan is Carroll’s close friend suggests the 23 year-old has not ruled out a move to Upton Park to his associates.
Rodgers is eager to give senior players such as captain Steven Gerrard more game time in Belarus and has included his captain in the squad, but he is also wary of pushing his stars too hard in a competition which is secondary to the Premier League campaign.
The most high-profile absentee from the squad is Alberto Aquilani, who, despite his agent’s claims, did not return to Liverpool training on Tuesday. He was given permission to negotiate a transfer in Italy and did not return to Merseyside with the squad following their American tour.

Liverpool Echo @LivEchoLFC
Reports in foreign media say Alberto #Aquilani has signed for #Fiorentina on a three year deal - we're checking at this end #lfc

Aquilani transfer confirmed.
thank god for that, has to be the worst liverpool signing ever

Rafa Benitez paid what ? The fact that Aquilani wasnt succesful here in Liverpool has nothing to do with Benitez. Benitez was fired before he could do anything with him. All the blame is down to Hodgson and Purlsow.Rory Smith @RorySmithTimes
Right, so @Kristian_Walsh points out that Eduardo Macia, who signed Aquilani for #LFC, is now at Fiorentina.
Rory Smith @RorySmithTimes
And @JamesHorncastle squares the circle by pointing out that Daniele Prade, DS at Roma when they sold him to #LFC, is also at Fiorentina.
Phil McNulty @philmcnulty
@RorySmithTimes @kristian_walsh So did Rafa not know anything about the signing of Aqualani then? It was totally Macia's work?
Rory Smith @RorySmithTimes
@philmcnulty @kristian_walsh There were two schools of thought at Liv. Macia swore on Aquilani. Others less sure. Rafa went with Macia.
Rory Smith @RorySmithTimes
@philmcnulty @kristian_walsh But don't think either of us are trying to absolve anyone of blame: Rafa took Macia's advice and paid for it.
Rory Smith @RorySmithTimes
...Macia *recommended* Aquilani to Benitez. Others around Rafa said no. Rafa weighed it up and went with Macia...
Rory Smith @RorySmithTimes
...Not trying to absolve anyone of anything. Definitely the case that Macia pushed for Aquilani, though. That's all I was saying.
Franco Costanzo is an excellent GK, he used to play here at my club ..Eduardo Macia is an idiot. It must be true, what they say about him. (Last summer he signed for my team, and they fired him after 3 months. Costanzo, the GK he made us sign, was left out of the team in just 4 months, and he stopped football in January).

can`t beat extending a players contract! its rare in this market.

The Uruguay forward committed his future to the Reds by putting pen to paper on the deal on Tuesday afternoon after returning to Melwood following the Olympics earlier this week.
Moments after signing the deal, Suarez told Liverpoolfc.com: "To sign a new contract with Liverpool is unbelievable for me because I am so happy here at both the club and also in the city.
"That is important for me and I am very happy with my new contract.
"When you are a kid, everybody wants to play for Liverpool. I am here now and it is a dream for me, and now I am a Liverpool fan.
"I am happy off the pitch because the people of Liverpool are good with me and my family. I try my best on the pitch and when you are happy off the pitch, you are happy on the pitch.
"I want to say thank-you to the fans because they are our 12th player. The supporters of Liverpool are unbelievable.
"Five or six years ago I watched on TV the stadium and the club, and now I play here and the supporters have helped me. That's very important for me."
Suarez has established himself as a Kop favourite at Anfield since his transfer from Ajax in January 2011.
The No.7 has scored 21 goals and created countless assists for his teammates in 52 appearances for Liverpool.
Manager Brendan Rodgers added: "I'm delighted. When you have the opportunity to work with world-class players it's fantastic.
"There were certainly a few clubs who were interested in him but over the off-season he and I communicated well - and he's committed himself for the long term here now.
"He's really looking forward to playing in this way of working. As a manager and for the supporters, I'm delighted because I know how important he is for them."
