Killzone 2

Damn it! No post here. Just got a text from ShopTo saying that my copy has been dispatched this morning and should be here on Thursday. Oh well at least its before the release date.

The girlfriend works and I stay at home with the little one as she has the higher paying job.

I've played SP just past the demo, well ive just finished the first level which was quite a long way after where the demo ended, no spoilers but a lot of the first level has been revealed already in hype videos like at E3 etc.
Very impressive stuff, I particularly liked the use of motion controls on the valve. The AI even on the middle difficulty setting are amazing, I've lost count of the times I've ran behind cover only to hear a grenade land somewhere near or hear the enemy shout 'flush him out' and then hear the beeping of a grenade approaching.

---------
Online everything is a little confusing at first, just because it's new and you won;t know where to begin. 'Warzone' from the main menu is 'online' basically. Once you go into there you can search for a game type of your choosing setting the filter to rule out any full maps or game modes you dont want.

The one problem I've found is if you leave everything at 'ANY' then when it searches for results the list appears but you can't move up or down to select a server to join. It's probably because the list is still being filled off the bottom of the screen and you can't see it. So for now just search for the exact game you want and make sure to set the option to show passworded games or full games to NO.

Apart from that its all superbly designed. When you first go online it will ask you to pick your timezone and region (so i assume you can connect to different regions and play against those local players that way). You can see your clan and see who is online, tab across with R1 and you have a friends list and the same (though i have no friends other than DevidBeckham from here who have the game yet).

Once you're in a game you have a full list tab showing everyone and the next map (kind of like the lobby in COD before a map loads.) In the same section you tab across and have your character, pressing left/right on the D-Pad changes your guns, side arms, badges etc. You only start with 1 pistol and 2 machine guns (the 2 main ones from the demo). Tab across again and you can view a squads menu where ther are 8 boxes and you can choose to join one of the private rooms. This will be great for groups of friends who want to go online and chat with each other and spawn on each others positions.

So far most people are playing 'body count'. I've searched for the other mods and most times there are no games. No doubt that will be because it's day time. its wednesday and the game isn't out anywhere other than Europe today.

I've played a couple of games of body count, they all end quite quickly so im not sure if that's the host selecting a small target or its set as that as default and cant be changed. JM needn't worry about lag or lack of 32 player servers. Despite the game only being out in EU there are TONS of 32 playr games to join, nearly every search ive done this morning finds a list of 32 player games with 28-30 players in each room, so you're not forced into joining 3/32 servers most of the time if you want a game.
Despite the games ending quickly though they're not too bad. You have enough time to get in the thick of the action but maybe not really enough to get used to the maps and style of play right away.

I can't think of anything else to say as I've not really done much more - ive only played 2 or 3 maps online and they look fine. One is the map that was in the MP trailer where it had a load of Americans shouting things like 'man down man down' 'SNIPER!' 'got him ,yee haw' and the other map was a shanty town style map that would be great for snipers.

Any questions I'll answer what I can.

It would have been easier for you to add us JM if you'd got a new name. I'll do it later anyway when Killzone 2 arrives (hopes).

UPDATE - Just answered the knock at the door and it was the postman - it's here!

God damn it! :P Our postman is pretty new and is always late, they've always around 12 but has been coming at around 2-ish, grrr. The tension is killing me!!

EDIT- Just as I say that they come. No game, fuckers. Ah well, at least I know it'll be tomorrow!!

I reckon all around 40-45 quid to be honest. It's a PS3 only title and I reckon they'll knock the price up from the usual 30 mark.

Can't imagine Asda charging more than £35 for it, I'm expecting to pay £32 from Asda.

I'll keep an eye on HotUKDeals and see if Morrisons have it on offer too, I think they sold Gears Of War 2 for £29 on release weekend.

Cheers for the impressions Rad.

Any noticeable differences to gameplay? Have they eliminated the so-called lag a lot of people were moaning about on AVForums?

Their website has different prices to in-store though.

But yeah, I wouldn't expect to pay much more than £30 anyway. One of the supermarkets should have it at that price.

What about Morrisons? They seem to put blockbusters out at silly prices (GTA4, Pro Evo etc)

ShopTo is only £32 for the spec ed. Order it today and you should get it tomorrow...

No custom button config but I've got used to Alternate 2 now - Also it's much easier to set Crouch to 'toggle' and probably Zoom to 'toggle' to save having to press 3 shoulder buttons to crouch, aim and shoot. I've got zoom set to hold but I'll probably swap in a bit to toggle.

Can't really tell if there is anything that different to the demo. I'd wager that it's exactly the same. The game still has that inertia feeling to it, guns feel the same, basically if it's different then it's nothing that slaps me in the face.

Online is really good fun - it's got a definite feel of Rainbow 6 vegas to it, the way you can take someone out with 1 lucky bullet in the head. There are also a TON of moments where the bullets you fire kill a guy just after he fires his gun and his bullet then takes you out.

I can't really think of anything else to say or describe - you really have to play it to get it yourself.

The 'lag' or whatever, it's still in there but you know, when you're in the thick of the action you don't notice it. If you run around everywhere and unload a full round of ammo at everything you see you're asking for trouble though - just honestly don't bother doing that, run somewhere, stop, crouch and fire a few bullets at someone.
Usually that's all you need to take them out as it's COD4 style 'few bullets, you die' style. Sure at times you fire a full round at someone in front of you not too far away and it takes the full lot of take them down but you're hitting body armour along with missing most of the shots rather than getting 1 or 2 good straight shots off at someone. If you crouch and just pop bullets at them in short bursts you can take them down in seconds. You don't HAVE to look down the sights of the gun or crouch though - just a few short bursts on the 'hip' view as they say takes men down. At a distance though the down the barrel is needed.

It took me a few rounds to get this game, to understand how it works and to figure out how the hell people were taking me out with ease while i was experiencing nothing but trouble. But if you 'think' when you see the enemy and take them out with some sense rather than panicking and shooting and hoping for the best you'll have far more fun and success. I still panic at times when i go into a room and see 3 men with their backs to me, but the times i think what to do and end up melee killing 1 guy then shooting a few shots into the backs of the others i come away alive. If i unload hell onto 1 guy it usually alerts the other 2 who take me out.

It took me something like 20 games to rank up enough to create my own clan, I'm on the verge I think of unlocking some new guns and then after that I'll unlock a new class.

1 point for a kill and then you get bonus points for your team winning and then extra multipliers for things like earning medals like for the most kills etc

-

Oh one last great great thing. The maps at the moment have sandbag guns and so on on them. Well as no one has ranked up enough to repair them for their team the battles are team vs team, gun vs gun. But when the world gets some engineers in there and they start repairing the guns the styles and tactics on the maps will completely change. The choke points will move elsewhere and the action should spread out across the map more and more and guns are repaired then destroyed or as the team fight over an area with a gun in.

It'll be really exciting to see yourself on a team with someone who has ranked up to a higher class than you helping your team win while you cover his ass and take the enemy out.

sounds good - just want to kill the postman for not bringing it today! best bring it tomorrow or i'll kill him there and then!

just played COD WAW n it doesn't very good to the demo of this game! just want to go online and work as a team!

on COD WAW u get some stupid people running around just shooting or throwing random grenade's, in which alerts me to say that they must be between the age of 12 - 16 coz they have no idea how to play as a team thats trying to sneak and kill people off!

hoping this game doesn't have their type of people! but hell wats chances of that happening!

This sounds awesome, what a clever idea - gives a purpose to engineer class.

Cheers again for the details Rad, keep em coming!

check this mini review taken from here:http://www.avforums.com/forums/8951026-post270.html

this guy is a die hard killzone fan thats been looking forward to this more then most people. he is the guy who made the AVF k-Zone clan

Right! The game sucks not really but!!!

The controls are exactly like they are in the demo 100%
thats not a bad thing but considering the online game runs at 20 fps max aiming is impossible.

I can tell you now that 50% of the people that signed up to play online will not play this game for any period of time.

If people had trouble aiming in the demo then you might as well sell the game after SP because the MP is not going to be for you.

The MP feels so slow it's almost like your in slo mo, and because of the low frame rate aiming shots when your under fire is difficult, I had no problem with this in SP as you can take your time and the frame rate is constant.

Anybody that doesn't want to put hundreds of hours in to this game in unlocking all the classes and guns might as well just forget online they will just get very frustrated and give in because by Friday there will be thousands of players with all the perks so the average crap clan will ave no chance, not to win matches but in just staying alive.

I can really see a hell of a lot of people playing this at most a week online and then never touching it again, unless you want to put huge amounts of time in to unlock, learn and do everything, the average Joe will get owned big time and just stop playing.

This game is going to take a lot of getting used to and huge amounts of time to get into, I suspect their will be a lot of people moaning in a week saying I'm not going online I just get killed every second, I'm not playing it's too slow and so on!!!!
No way is this a MP game where you can just jump in and play a hour when you feel like it so crap clan your out of luck I'm afraid unless your only going to play by your selfs for the remainder of the games life.

This is just my first thoughts after 1 hour so will probably change and I am willing to put the time in to see what happens, I can see this being a amazing game but will require loads of time to get enjoyment out of it.

All negative?

No, it looks amazing apart from the low fram rate, this could just be the server I was on so will have to check on this.

Sounds great, loads of stuff to do and unlock, blah, blah you already know all the great stuff.
Basically what I'm getting at is if your not going to put in the hours, and a lot at that, then you can forget just jumping online for a quick blast or for a quick fun game unless you are of course playing friends only.

Could be amazing and probably is only played a very short time but this type of MP will put loads of casual players off, only hardcore here I'm afraid especially when everybody online has all the classes unlocked.
Just typing stuff of the top of my head if it doesn't make any sense.

I can't wait to get stuck in as it is good it's just such a shock from the usual fps MP game, Put the time in and it could be the best MP game ever???

Oh and nobody talks online

I will give it a good hammer tonight and give my final thoughts

'Nobody talks online' is a complete pile of shit, 100% grade A bullshit. Every game I've played today, and I've lost count but its tons has had tons of people chatting away. Granted it's all French or German or Dutch etc and I've no idea what I'm being asked to do but there is just no way this guy has played on a bunch of servers today and not ran into games with people talking - just no way.

His problem about ranking up and being owned by people who got the game early.

Again this guys talking shit - you just select 'my skill level' on the search filter at the start and you ONLY play with people at your level. So noobs play with noobs and you WILL NOT run into guys with medals (think perks) and rockets and all the extra tools.

A word of warning would be to avoid any games that are using BOTS for the first few hours you play. They know the maps off by hand and can select classes above your rank so you can get beat pretty easily by them by their gun turrets or rockets. Although if you run into a server and have BOTS on YOUR side, well then you'll be revived by medics and given all kinds of cool guns to pick up off the floor after they die.

Even without bots or without the 'my level' filter, every gun kills just as good as another. In fact I keep returning to the starting 2 machine guns despite unlocking a shotgun and a micro machine gun. The first 2 guns own plain and simple, and can take ANYONE down just as easy as they can take you out.

The only perks ive unlocked so far - and they're not even called perks, its medals i think. 1 lets me sprint longer maybe? in fact ive forgot what the first medal did to my man. The second rewards me with more points per kill. It doesn't boost our teams chances of winning, it just boosts my own personal XP points for kills at the end of the game.

I've just ranked up to unlock the medic class which i think is around the 300 point range. It didn't take that long to get there, I'd say everyone will get there in an afternoon of solid play or if you play on and off over the weekend you'll have it by Sunday. My play time is 2 hours 46 mins and i have 480 points so there you go.

EDIT

I managed to play a game this afternoon where it swaps game modes. It was alright but I was on a team of humans and we we're against mainly BOTS. So we were thrashed and it wasn't that much fun at all. It could be fun to play, I guess throwing in different modes on the same map - providing it's a fun map - would be great. Though a couple of maps ive been on aren't that much fun in body count. Mainly the huge wide open maps that feel like they needed tanks or jeeps on to get around. Then again body count isn't very goal orientated so if the other team camps at their spawn, your team have to trek across the map to find them which is what we had to do, and it was very boring.

I could see the same maps being quite fun to play of a S&D mode.

One last thing about that mode though is the time limits given to you, like in Assassination are pretty short so by the time your team get close to the target and you've fought your way through the defence the time ends. Hopefully i was just on a piss poor server with crappy short times. Though to be fair you get the same time to protect your target and our team member died. The dumb fuck ran out trying to kill the attackers.

Too early to say if i love the online side - from the maps ive played im really enjoying it but i dont want to say 'whooo amazing' and then tomorrow play on some huge maps and think 'hmm actually, these 3 maps are amazing, the rest are shit'

Oh and on the loading screens when you're online - it sometimes has like 'Assassination' at the top of the load screen when you're joining a Body Count game (or any game). Don't worry, it's not loading that game mode, they're just there for some info during loading. It confused me the first time and i quit the server thinking 'they've changed mode as ive joined' but he hadn't.

My current rank isn't too bad.

KRadiation

Rank 790/25907 Score 510 Kill Ratio 1.38 Kills Per hour 64 Kills 185 Deaths 134 Suicides 1 Team Kills 0

Battle Replay updates really fast - I just finished a game online and a few minutes later it was available to watch.

http://www.killzone.com/kz/tour_round_history.psml?kz_match_id=21049&kz_file_id=25720

I'm a medic in this one and i do bloody great work.

The controls still catch me out now and again if I've not played for a bit, I'm sat here typing so when i go back to the game later i'll no diubt have to get my mind working at it again.

Basic controls to remember.

D-Pad left and right and down swap between your grenades (down) knife (right) and other tool (left). The medic for example has no knife and has the erm... life support zapper tool on the D-Pad left button. Tapleft on there and then shoot your downed team mate (hold the button for a continuous beam don't just tap it). the knife is great for melee kills but you can just use your gun, guns take a few hits though so best off knifing them.

You don't have to use down on the d-pad to select grenades, you can just tap the grenade button but i guess its there if you want it. Maybe it's one to use when you have proximity mines or something rather than standard grenades.

Everything else is basically the same as the demo.

Found out what my first perk/medal unlock was - Example soldier (8 x good conduct) Increased start ammo amount. A god send, honestly you will piss away your ammo like nobodies business, whatever that saying means.

You have to get the Good Conduct ribbon 8 times to unlock that. The same for all of the medals. I can't remember what the requirements for good conduct are. I'm sure its something like no team kills and you finish in the top players or something.

The other in detail is
Corpse counters (8 x Body Count specialist) Increased points/Kill (BC only)
Body count is something like get 10% of the teams kills in a game of body count, i think.

Is there team work online?

There won't be much at first because everyone is a grunt with a machine gun. But you really notice the game where you have medics with you reviving fallen comrades. You can only use the revival kit once every few seconds, it's got like a 30 second charge on it so you can't revive over and over for easy points.

In the game with the bots where we had gun turrets so i guess that is team work. They were placed in certain areas where the enemy flank us so it was protecting our rear.

You know, i don't think you can play this game and not try to work as a team in some way. If you go off on your own chances are 2 or more enemies will tear you to pieces. I always tend to follow team mates or invite people into a squad so we can spawn ahead of the base. (You can only spawn on the leader of the squad, so if he's dead you cant pick another team mate) You can also later on unlock a spawn flare that when you drop it lets your team spawn on that area.

The only real shame is squads seem to be 4 man only - or at least ive only seen 4 men squads so if we have 5 of us online someone's on their own unless we split into smaller groups. Though games aren't that long so its not a big deal to be on your own, and spawning in the base doesn't matter too much either.

Oh my god - that is so cool! Has any game ever done this before???

Halo had a replay feature from the online side where it saved the actions of people online and then you could upload the clips to the halo site. Im not sure if it was only a snapshot 30 seconds worth you could upload like the highlights or if it recorded the full match though. I only used it once in the beta that came with crackdown and didn't bother again. I can't even remember if you could move the cameras around or view other players or what.

Seems this only saves your last bunch of games so if you do something great best to log off and wait 5 mins and grab the link before its los. I'm not sure if you have archives anywhere on mykillzone.

Got any trophies yet?
Forgot to answer that before, I've got trophies for finishing the first 2 levels of the SP campaign. Good stuff.

I've not really looked at the trophy list so I don't know if there are any online trophies, I assumed there would be for ranking up, like [unlocked the medic] [bronze] but I got nothing so ill have to take a look.
