FIFA 22 Discussion (Console Versions)

A good starting point is everything to default sliders except Pass Error at around 62 for both. 60-65 seems to be a sweet spot that disables the CPU's fast laser-passing around the box without harming its overall threat. I fully intend not to touch the sliders again.

Now just waiting for a bug-free Career Mode. My season 2 Create A Club team are destined to be dropped like a stone when the big bugs are resolved.

O
Hey man. I assume you’re referring to 65-70 speed as a reference to my suggestion of a higher sprint speed to fix the cb jockey. I get what you mean when you say the above, but just to clarify, it’s not the actual speed of the players that’s fixing the issue, it’s the value itself.

So the higher sprint speed for whatever reason makes the CPU start sprinting (from a jog) much quicker than on a lower value. So with a low sprint speed the CPU doesn’t reach its threshold for deciding to sprint until later irrespective of the scenario. With the higher value, they will choose to sprint instead of walking (or jockeying) much faster, and this is why you’ll now see defenders racing back to cover. It’s strange, but that’s why there’s so much discussion and analysis of the slider settings - it’s because the values create different CPU behaviours, they don’t just do something faster or slower, etc.
My feeling with this is that the running animations you see are tied to the speeds the players move at. The locomotion is mostly freeform rather than being tied to button presses - where you mention ‘deciding’ to sprint earlier due to 65 or 70 speed, that is based on the animation being tied to the speed of movement. If I hold R2 on Slow and 1 speed, I know I’ve decided to sprint, but my player takes ages to amble up to a visible sprint. If you imagine a 0 slider setting where players have a top speed of 4mph, you could hold down R2 all you like, but the animation the game would choose would be a walk, not a super slow sprint.

So I think the game interprets that, when players move slowly due to sliders and the game speed setting, they shouldn’t use full sprint animations when tracking back because they aren’t going fast enough, but they should use ‘jockeying’ animations to retreat instead. For cosmetic reasons more than because the players are actually jockeying.

Where I think this goes wrong (hence mostly), is that there’s actually a top speed limit for the jockeying animations which doesn’t perfectly marry up to how fast the players need to go, and this creates a gap in available speeds, where defenders don’t track back quick enough.

I may be way off on this as I haven’t tested it deeply. I’m just trying to understand why there is this apparent change in behaviour, and I know that first paragraph above is correct. And I haven’t compared Normal + 70 speed to Normal + 20 speed, but I did think that Normal + 20 speed was a lot better than Slow + 20 speed.

Pace is okay except pass. But only sliders to sprint and acceleration is not enough : we should ask about agility.
We have to make pressure about it. It's the biggest issue to me, you can turn and make pass everywhere with average players. Well i play semi, but even if Fuma if by far more difficult, you can make super quick pass after a move like if the player was prime Messi with coke and steroids.
It's one thing that may change the sliders in terms of pace radically. Also, remember the "1" vs "99" in agility that someone posted here... It's abnormal, it's like a bug.

That's my mean concern, why i got hard to take the game seriously. 20-21-22 are the most agile with the ball Fifa i ever played.
Retried FIFA 14 and it was totally logic while you where turning in terms of weight shift. Also FIFA 17 (even more than 16) without sliders.

Don't know what happened. I think they rely 50% on people (most FUT people) and Esports regarding defense which impact the midfield too.
For assistance in defence after a goal they missed and were super pissed off in quarter or semi final, in every region/country etc., and made an obsession about it. That just a simple "scenario" but i really think that goals missed due to a defensive interraction pissed tons of Esports players, even they play with big teams with big defenders/players who knows how to defends too and not only big offensive players.

Edit: but marking as improved pretty well since the patch. It's a good Fifa. I would say it's like i don't know, a level above Fifa 16, far less buggy than FIFA 17 but less good in terms of physics and overall speed, but way better in terms of variety, much much better. I would rank it 5th or 6th even if i don't like to make a ranking, but above 5 FIFA i can wrote.

I noticed that the favourites Fifa from this community are the one where sliders worked well. Even FIFA 15 is liked for it, and to me it's the most atrocious Fifa i ever played after the 09. But Sliders seemed to works pretty well on Ignite... I understand a bit more now "why" as i play online most of the time on Fifa.
Because before, the AI was at least to me way too repetitive and they were slow about building, repetitive, boring the opposite of FIFA 22 i got the word on my tongue resuming all but can't found it.

Fifa 22 i don't know, it's like a complete other game in that regard, it's super dynamic. At least you have challenge, variety, and it's really hard on the hardest difficulty, when on FIFA 20 after 3 games i scored tons of goals, it's impossible here. It's all about it to me regarding that game : if i take the game slightly it could be fun. But it's too much ressembling to a simulation visually and on some animation (even if they're pretty fast), it's weird i got difficult to take it like a simple "fun game, offensive oriented"

Another example of the behaviour differences from sliders - I feel the narrow width has helped with the deep defensive line issue. The core reason for it happening is still there, but the frequency of the long CPU runs is much lower. This is because the space between the lines is condensed and the CPU isn’t triggered to play as direct. Knock on effect of that = there’s less times the defenders follow those runners and play the attacker onside. Strange things these sliders are! Really loving this game at the moment though!
Hey James, are you bringing you findings to Operation Sports Forum too? If not, I highly recommend doing so.
With your knowledge and testing philosophy you sure would be a great addition to the team around @Matt10 and the community! You’d be at the core of slider mystery unraveling! If you are doing this already, thanks.

Yes, it can be frustrating when you read posts from multiple people and everyone suggest different sliders.
Then you end up tweaking it constantly in hope that certain set hold a key to perfect gameplay.

I was down this rabbit hole for a very long time only to find that sliders from other people simply dont work for me.

Maybe its the way I play, maybe its teams that I pick, I dont know..
But if you are finding yourself tweaking it every match and still being frustrated coz its too fast, too slow, too ping pongy, too hectic or too sluggish - just stop.
Go back to default and go with your heart. Tweak only the things that you find annoying.
I've tried loads this year playing semi controls - manual for me just makes the game feel jittery ..and default is my personal favourite. Sliders seem to fix one thing and break three others

Default too : only slow to me, no sliders, i tried first a set of sliders, then myself to fit with my taste.
I was about to because crazy, pause very 20 second. I stopped, it's not for me as i'm a bit suffering of anxiety, i tend to become crazy and don't play but "slidering" all the session.

But slow is like +1 (even +2) speed to me. I would like it to be more pronounced, or having normal > slow > slower.

All these sliders and chopping and changing.. Ive just gone back to pes 2021 with a new option file. Plays an excellent game of football albeit it not perfect.
Love the feeling of the ball etc.
Will have to do this year.

Its not even about breaking things, but I find sliders depending on each other and influencing one another.
Someone can achieve same result (for example: less hectic/ping pongy AI) with completely different set of sliders.
If you start tweaking only certain elements - it might break the whole thing.

For example - @Anth James sliders.
If I find sprint at 70 being too hectic - which I do - lowering just sprint value can break the whole feeling that he built.

Worst thing that you can do is to start mixing different sets of sliders.

Hence, if someone is struggling finding their sweet spot, its better to step back to default and start tweaking only elements that are an eye sore for you.
If you start borrowing others width, length, FB positioning, etc - it might not be "compatibile" with the rest of your settings and just creates a mess.

It's interesting to read how a fair amount of you are now using default sliders. I actually decided to try it on Friday afternoon after realizing I wasn't enjoying the game anymore with the constant adjustment of sliders. So I wondered, if the game is so great this year at it's core, why not try it as it was released: default sliders and even normal speed. To my amazement, and after adjusting my brain to the faster pace (as I was playing with 10/10 and slow previously), I actually had a great time playing the game, more than ever since the first time I played it.

Everything flows so much better to me this way, not to mention I am not noticing major defensive issues or anything broken really (with the exception of the sliding tackle frenzy introduced by the latest update).

I think it was @Emroth that mentioned this before in one of his posts, saying more or less from what I can recall, that the game is so dynamic this year that if you actually slow the game yourself, by avoiding the sprint button offensively, and defensively, by keeping position and not pressing the CPU attackers so much, you can definitely see the pace going down.

I have experienced this in a bunch of CM matches, where (with passing error at 50/50), if I tackle, press and panic constantly defensively the CPU will move the ball around super quickly ending in the infamous tikitaka style. BUT, in matches or situations where I do not sprint, tackle or press, the CPU builds up slowly, stops to look for empty spaces, puts more effort in long passes/through balls and actually misses much more, obviously, if you focus and do a good job defensively, regardless of sliders, specifically the pass error.
For example - @Anth James sliders.
If I find sprint at 70 being too hectic - which I do - lowering just sprint value can break the whole feeling that he built.

Absolutely! I totally agree with this. @Anth James is achieving excellent results and I love and admire how people are able to frame a set of values resulting in something with a complete different flow but the problem is, a slight adjustment here and there can break the balance of the set completely.

Anyway, the game is really good this year, and it's great to know everyone is enjoying it their one way. After 10 games in CM with default sliders and speed, I can now say that I have found my sweet spot, and I am not going mad any more with the "option paralysis" that the slider adjustment is creating in my mind :)

Agree here! Been saying that my whole football video game life! Like in real life, you pace dictates the other teams pace to a certain degree! Name the child “it’s how you play…” and you get hammered. ;)

The tandem of values is key! :TU:

Liverpool's first goal against Man Utd is a perfect example of this eheheh. Massive pressing + clumsy defending and Liverpool moving the ball around perfectly until the back of the net.

I am watching this on my second screen while playing the fixture on FIFA 22. great stuff, on both sides! :APPLAUD:

Edit2: 4!
Edit3: 5... and. Still. Running.

What you are discussing above, about us influencing the pace, is one of the main reasons why I love the game online, against friends, even tho it has default sliders.
When I played against @Chris Davies - the overall pace of the game was slower than my Career Mode matches against AI. And thats because both of us were playing patient build up, with not a lot sprinting involved, topped up with our Pass Error.

Its a bit more tricky against AI, especially on higher difficulties. Sometimes it feels hectic and fast, but its not due to speed, or even fast animations. Its lack of AI error in passing and instant pass execution that makes it feel that way.
They dont need to aim - they just pass.
Hence I usually go down the route of increasing First Touch Error, Pass Error and lowering Pass Speed, to force AI to take a touch, "think", and slow the overall pace of the game down.

This United v Liverpool game is making me feel a little bit better about my half-time scorelines whenever I play Liverpool.

EDIT: That pass from Henderson for Salah's third... If I saw that in FIFA, I'd be turning the Xbox off and saying the ball physics were bullshit.

I totally understand the need to increase those values offline, it makes perfect sense and that is what I've been doing up until now. However, I did try to play the exact same game in CM with two different approaches: first one, pressing and panicking in the defence, resulting in the CPU moving the ball all over the place and inside the box with passing accuracy of 94% in the end and a 3-0 loss for me. And then, a second approach, with me just holding the position as much as I could defensively, resulting in the CPU slowing down more frequently and trying different ways to score, with much more high balls and a lot of missed passes, some of them totally misplaced - Pass accuracy at 84% and a 1-0 win for me - and I had to sweat to get that result since I was playing with a much weaker team).

It could be just me wanting to believe it works better this way but I have seen lots of different things happening with default sliders. I like it this way for now but obviously everyone should tweak it with their heart as you said earlier in a beautiful poetic manner :)

And imagine that, we can now see sliding tackles exactly like Pogba just did for that straight red card at least once every match after the new update :LMAO:
You kid, but you know what, every week I find myself thinking that a lot of the things I question are probably realistic. The fact that there's no 0-0s, for example...

And that approach usually works for me up until AI scores a goal. Then it all falls apart. I have to start pressing as Im behind. On top of that - being on manual means I need more chances to score a goal. So I do need AI to be more prone to error.
But thats the thing - your style, team, league, settings - everything has an impact on gameplay and AI.
Best to start on default and go from there. And if you can find joy on default sliders - thats even better.

I also crave for 0-0's a lot but yeah, can't remember any lately in any of the competitions I usually follow..... it's possible that we are just two old nostalgic farts here :)

Edit: I actually had 1 CM 0-0 result with default sliders in the morning.
Edit 2: It is also relevant to say that I have lowered the match time to 6 minute halfs to balance things out. I am enjoying the "highlight" kind of game feel instead of a longer 10 minute half journey.

I get you, specially on manual you definitely need to raise the pass error and whatnot. I am just playing semi controls and default for now.

With all that feedback... how could I not try your latest set!
I will be at my moms for a lovely sunday lunch (the big one you call dinner, only at the correct time of day! ;) ); deer goulash awaits, but when I get back this afternoon I’ll see if these sliders are making a difference. Having a special look on the power bar, as I can’t think of it working for me. But let’s see.
first I need to take care of Bambi. :)

edit: ah come on… it’s sunday… have a good one y’all! :) here is another full manual match I played with v5 of the OS community sliders!
Enjoy.

it feels like PES somehow with the whole slower pace, which is a good thing, however does it always feel like pes but with ai variety?

Man United's worst ever showing since that 8-2 loss i think vs man city.., solskjaer is riding on very thin ice at the moment

Sliders is a complexe things to master.
You need to be patient, using differents teams with different styles.
You play with default sliders, you notice what's wrong.
You change the slider and you check it's ok on 3-4 games and you choose another default to destroy, etc...

In a week, you will have a good sliders I think.
When EA is patching the game, play 3-4 games to noticed what it's wrong or it's good now :-)

I hope I haven’t annoyed everyone with too much slider talk! I feel I should explain...

I agree with you guys that you should all play with exactly the settings you find best and you shouldn’t be tweaking things every 5 seconds because my findings or someone else’s are the ‘best’ way to play. Not at all.

I personally like to try and ‘fix’ any major issues with the gameplay through adjustments and if I see some of you talking about those issues and I think I’ve found a solution or a help, I like to share and explain the thinking behind it (as does Matt). My hope is it might actually save some of you tweaking with the sliders so you can just play, not the opposite.

The counter attack jockeying issue for example. That’s the reason I’ve gone to 75 sprint speed. As a result of that I found some other positive impacts on the gameplay, so I shared my findings as it might align with an experience some are chasing. It actually fixes that problem of defenders jockeying on counters. So if that’s game breaking for you, you can absolutely solve it. I personally don’t find it too fast as I’ve tried to counter some of that speed with other settings, but it won’t be for everyone - no way.

I think look at the slider sets like mini gameplay mods, each has a different style, does something unique. As many of you have correctly said, one slider impacts another and so on, so they all work together to create a different experience. PES 2021 has 8 million gameplay mods, different combinations etc. It’s find what works best for you 100%.

I have just spent a lot of time with the sliders and with gameplay mods from a number of games over the last little while (@papinho81 I blame you - it started with your FIFA 20 gameplay lab:LMAO:) that I’ve come to understand a little of how the settings impact gameplay in odd ways sometimes and I like to explain myself as I go.

For the record I think FIFA 22 is a great game, the best in a long time and I’m really enjoying it!

@Anth James - I hope you didnt take anything I said personally.

I was just trying to look from some other members perspective (especially reasonably new to Fifa) and the confusion/frustration they might experience.
Take @Isslander for example. He was having fun until he fell into sliders rabbit hole.
I've been there myself and even tho I still find myself testing/tweaking slider sets every now and again -
1. It doesnt bother me
2. I more or less know how they work and what should I tweak if some gameplay elements are falling apart.

But I did go through a stage where sliders were pure frustration for me, clouding the entire experience.

Thats the only reason I suggested that if someone begins to feel frustrated - its better to step back and start from scratch.

I think what you and Matt (any any others testing and sharing sliders) are doing is a great thing for community and if anything - I admire your patience.

Thanks man. No I’m definitely not offended by anything any of you have said. I just wanted to explain in a similar way to what you’ve just said now - I’ve been there also and I don’t want people to think that my way is the only way the game can or should be played when I write about sliders etc.
