FIFA 17 News & Discussion Thread

Hope my evowebbers don't mind, but Set #2 of the OS Sliders are out. I worked on this one for quite a bit yesterday. In my opinion, it's the best I have seen this game play. Like night and day honestly. Please enjoy!

FIFA 17 OS Community Sliders - Set #2 - 10/1/16

Here is Set #2. Worked on it all night, it was "found" while streaming last night with a couple guys on Twitch. Nothing but positive. Yes, need to work on getting the foul count back up, but man, it's playing great.

Word of caution: This is a set that is geared around trying to make the game more start and stop. Not in the terms of fouls, but in the terms of attention to defending, and what kind of reactions that results in. Teams will play the way they are designed, which means offensively and defensively.

The fact that we can get such a variety in this though, is really making me love FIFA 17 more.

World Class/Legendary, 10-15 Mins, Slow Speed

Sliders(Hum/CPU)
Sprint Speed: 50/50 - Started at 52, but physicality stopped. With a tighter set up, it's important to make sure physicality remains intact. This seemed to have helped, although jogging animation does show up - but in later parts of the match, and not consistently enough to warrant a change.

Acceleration: 49/49 - evened out, if bursting occurs, try 49/50. Under 50 accel feels much more controlled though.

Shot Error: 52/52 - With a tighter set up, there are less chances, so this is key in getting more shots on frame, and from distance due to the HLW combo.

Pass Error: 60/60 - What a difference 2 pts make. Players will be forced to perform under pressure. Bad passes are punished, and passes into space are back.

Shot Speed: 50/50 - no change

Pass Speed: 45/45 - increased this because the ball needs to move a bit more crisp. Paired up wtih the higher pass error, and it works nicely.

Injury Frequency: 50/50 *leaving these alone for now* needs some research

Injury Severity: 50/50 *leaving these alone for now* needs some research

GK Ability: 45/45 - no change from Set 1.

Marking: 78/78 - no change from Set 1. Still the best balance of zone and man marking.

Run Frequency: 5/5 - still a good mix of runs off the ball, but not always running away from the ball carrier. More checking to, even from the midfielders.

Line Height: 65/68 - anything below 60 and it's just too passive. It invites pressure, and the defenders turn their backs, chasing players around the box. This also allows the back line to help in the attack much more. Also, taking a bit of a page out of Set D from FIFA 16 Sliders we did with the height discrepancy. This actually pushes the CPU a tad further up, squeezes them a bit more closer, so there is still a player in front of their players, and vice versa.

Line Length: 40/40 - Biggest difference, but biggest impact. This brings everyone closer, as expected, but doesn't nullify variety in the slightest. This makes players check to the ball even more, and have their backs face goal due to the marking.

Line Width: 70/70 - Key in keeping the shape intact. The midfield is where I saw Set 1 start to lose its grasp on realism. It was so easy for the CPU to glide in and make 1 or 2 passes, and be deep into the defensive third already. This evened out width, in combo with the other line settings, puts alot more emphasis in creativity and defensive responsibilities - without running around like maniacs.

Fullback Positioning: 60/60 - as length and run frequency decrease, FB positioning has to do its part to overlap the runs. The FBs do not overtake the midfielder either - which is one of the great things about FIFA 17 this year. This also keeps the FBs more in touch on transition.

First Touch Control: 65/65 - no change from Set 1

Cheers Matt i'll try this. Got to admit out of the box and even with my slider settings from 16 last year i wasnt feeling it until your first set of sliders came along. Really enjoying it now, it's a superb game, especially on manual.

I played about 10-12 matches in total on release day night and in my honest opinion they released this game too soon. Another month could have made all the difference to it. They probably didnt want to delay because the rival game was already out. However, there is just sooooo many things about it that suggests its unfinished, rushed and unpolished. Also, the new engine doesnt seem to function too well, or at least like its capable of, which suggests a serious oversight and lack of testing.

Speaking to mates that played it over the weekend and they're all reporting the same issues. Poor responsiveness, button delay, laggy menus, stuttering/slowdown on the pitch, lack of variety in attacking play, shoddy animations, gets boring very quickly etc etc

The kicking animations on the freekicks and penalties are so so poor. Its great having more control over them but good god when they make contact with the ball it looks so shit and unfinished.

Hand on heart I gave it a fair and honest blast and apart from that one time it was in my console, it hasnt graced it again since. I was back playing "the other game" in an instant and I still aint played FIFA 17 since. I expected a lot more from it, it actually turns out its worse than even I expected!! Massive disappointment this year for the game. As it stands that is. It almost feels beta!

People seriously saying its not clunky, its slick and responsive? What are you playing FIFA 99?

As it stands, right now, FIFA 16 is more slicker, responsive and the more polished football game. FIFA 17 is so rough right now, as we speak, its sandpaper.

Sorry but disagree totally. Its magnificent. I'm not getting the button lag. But then i dont play online. Dont undertsand people that do.

Haven't played 17 yet,and reading up on it here, don't think I'll play it for a while either.
But since I trust your opinion on it,and both you and I enjoyed 16, how does it stand vs that?
Graphics/presentation etc,not really interested in that, more interested in team individuality.
Does Liverpool plays as Liverpool ?
Do you play as Liverpool when playing them?
Any thoughts on it?
Still enjoying my 16 a great deal, plays great in lower leagues, but once you play the PL it doesn't
Same here?
Cheers

Do you use sliders at all? I'm a red and i really enjoy going Liverpool. Mane and Coutinho are a joy. If you enjoyed 16 i see no reason why you cant enjoy 17. Try Matts sliders (im still on his first set) try full manual apart from crossing and see how you go on. Honestly this game is cracking, but you do need to tweak to your tastes because out of the box is for little Johnny who loves Barca, Madrid and Man U.

Hi Rocky - in my opinion, you have to be able to accept that you'll play the same way game-in game-out in order to appreciate the good (and there's plenty of it in terms of physics and variety, it's a next-gen game in that regard). If you can accept that the AI is very similar to last year, you can enjoy it.

I think teams have a little more variety in play to a point, but once they're in the final third I see the same AI patterns as last year (i.e. on World Class it's very difficult to regain possession - more so now with super-shielding, see the video I posted in here last week - and on Legendary they set up tap-ins by running up the goal-line and hitting a cutback).

I feel like it's three steps forward in terms of the physics and the resulting variety (I've seen some wild goalkeeper miskicks) along with the better player runs and new set-pieces, but four steps back in terms of the pace, the response times, the ridiculously overpowered shielding system, and the "weirdness" of the new engine (one minute the ball will be floaty and the next it's like a medicine ball, replays show feet clipping through the ball on occasion - it seems like they couldn't get Frostbite to cope with everything 100% perfectly).

I hand-on-heart prefer 16, but then I couldn't go back to 16 because I played it to death and got sick of the AI, and the AI is a little better this year. Online (which I rarely play) I think 16 is twice as good, seriously. But then I don't really care enough for that to be a problem...

I've started a career as a player in League Two and I'm enjoying it, but not being able to change the tactics (as player, not manager) shows how unimportant that side of the game is and how you play the same way whether you're Crystal Palace or Crewe.

But then I'll try to hit a shot on a player's bad side, and it'll fly off towards the corner flag (on assisted, or semi, or manual shooting), and I'll think to myself, GOD DAMN IT, I WISH that PES did this stuff as well.

TL;DR: if you liked 16 you'll like 17 but don't expect the things you disliked last year to be fixed, because they probably aren't.

Thanks for the answer mate.
Pretty much answered what I needed.
Yeah I love the good things about FIFA,like you say, miss kicking it halfway to Russia is one thing.
Think I'll pick it up later,no rush yet.
Player career?
That's acctually what I do the most in FIFA ( controlling whole team) and last year was a step up from 15, your "manager" actually changed tactics late in game, but then the insane transfers did make it rough sometimes,at Sunderland they sold both their keepers and I was stuck with Steve Harper age 43 or something.
Any changes to the contract situation in that mode?
Still an everlasting contract and no chance of becoming free agent?
Appriciate your answers mate, helps a lot

It's just a shame that these forums are like this, if someone bitches and moans about PES over and over they get a certain moderator jumping in there to put an end to it, in the Fifa forums it's apparently perfectly acceptable and goes unchecked (well until someone on the pro-Fifa side dare to respond a little vigorously.)

Please cut that bullshit, Paul, it's making me furious because it's super-wrong. I've even temp banned craney for a few days in case you haven't noticed. Apparently he didn't learn anything out of it, but, oh well, that's for us to deal with.

People like you

First of all that first bit is completely wide of the mark.

People like me? Who am I?

I want better from this game, it can be better, it should be better. The game engine may have changed, but the core gameplay itself is showing clear signs of regression and stagnation this year.

Thats not an opinion, that is a fact. As backed up by any reviewers worth their salt.

Like I've said for the millonth time.....The game speaks for itself. Regardless of what I or you think of it.

Yeah I was involved in the sliders sets over in OS last year.
Playing with the last set on my 16, tweaked pass/FTC to the CPU advantage and it makes for a good set.
That's really my point,my 16 works alright, and 17 has to be better for me to go there.
The different between PES 16-17 is huge, and that's a no brainer,so really wanting to know if it's worth changing just because of a few new features or not.
Thanks for the answer pal

Tell me what I am or have done wrong?

Am I on topic? Yes.
Am I being offensive/insulting in anyway? No.

Apart from being banned because of a total lack of sense of humour. I cant see any other reason unless make believe.

Whats the problem?

Please cut that bullshit, Paul, it's making me furious because it's super-wrong.

Then perhaps the difference is clarity, in the PES thread for example "Super Leeds" makes clear posts like:

OK You have Your opinion.
Dont come back grinding it away regularly though,"people" will make own minds up.

Which put an end to the trolling, here maybe it's being done in private?

I've even temp banned craney for a few days in case you haven't noticed.

How could we notice unless there was a post to that effect?

Tell me what I am or have done wrong?

Am I on topic? Yes.

It's not about being on topic or not, it's about the way you're being both. You're a wind-up merchant who doesn't seem to know when it's better to stop just for the sake of it. You're making it very, very hard for us to mod this place and keep things as tidy as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I love users who are able to express their feelings about games the way you're doing it. You're passionate, and that's awesome. But I'd sometimes like for you to find a way to come across a tad less... difficult to deal with.

I would say that Craney gets it a bit wrong in how he vents his frustrations and his posts in this thread are probably more suited to the contrast and compare thread. I am using that thread for when I wish to talk about both in one post.

That said, I don't think this thread needs to consist of flowery prose about FIFA17 exclusively. I paid £40 for this game and I am liking it for what it is, but I don't see why I can't lay into that which bothers me here, so long as I am not doing so in a manner that is better placed in the comparison thread.

If I or anyone else has issues with the game, then I don't see why I/we can't post about them in the games general discussion thread... as in here. If someone wishes to disagree with me on the points I or others raise, offer a counter or maybe even offer some help and advice, then what would be the problem exactly?

Honestly, Placebo, you seem a tad over-protective of this sales giant to the point of what reads like paranoa. FIFA doesn't need protecting but I do agree this thread isn't the place to lay into it while making constant and direct references to the other title on offer.

********************************************************************************

Okay, so far as the game goes: I hope things improve quickly. This game needs a patch(es) for the single player experience or for EA to just come and say that they couldn't care less about the single player experience and sliders are your whack so far as it being "fixed" goes. Right now, I am thanking the presence of sliders while also cursing their existence.

Also, and this will go down like a lead balloon, but they need to start again with the mechanics. Not just defending but EVERYTHING. It isn't that stuff doesn't work, it is that it makes out football as way complex a thing to actually play than it is. The game feels ridiculously clunky as a result of all these mechanics. There is a thing called "feature creep" when it comes to videogames; FIFA has "mechanic creep"

The fun I am getting from the game primarily is the shallow, or what should be inconsequential stuff. The visuals. The licensing (though why does it feel like they just dingy international teams, even though they are present?) and the presentation. Gameplay wise then I guess it is the breaking down of teams decent, but all too strict, adherence to formation. Still to have a skillful player controlled by the COM trick me and do think it is because of those convoluted mechanics, multiple dribble/movement styles that the COM is clumsily utilising that means it just can't, or won't, do that which is deemed risky in the code. It's a wee bit of a shame.

It's not about being on topic or not, it's about the way you're being both. You're a wind-up merchant who doesn't seem to know when it's better to stop just for the sake of it. You're making it very, very hard for us to mod this place and keep things as tidy as possible.

Well I can honestly say I'm not intentionally trying to wind people up at all. I'm simply saying what I see about this game, if people arent happy with that or take offence to it, that is their personal issue. I dont control that.

There is no pro-FIFA/pro-PES in this at all for me. I'm neutral. I played PES for many years, switched, played FIFA for many years and this year is the first year where I can say PES has seriously stepped their game up. That is all. When PES was bad I called it as I saw it, same goes for the other game.

I dont get why people need to be so tribal and overly defensive about them? I certainly am not. Unless of course you have close ties with these developers or games of course, then you will get defensive.

Tell me what I am or have done wrong?

Well you've bored the titties off of me if I'm being honest
I don't post in here much anymore but have a read around the time a new FIFA is out and most of the feed has been taken up by you basically saying the same thing over and over and over and over again. What's the point? Aren't you fed up of blabbing on about it now?

Anyway, I'm an online only player on Xbox and I must be playing a different game as not seeing all this lag and stuttering going on. Button delay which I can accept as the little virtual men getting their feet positioned right could annoy some people but it doesn't bother me. The way I play the game (my style of play by getting the ball down and knocking it about as realistically as I can) gives me an enjoyable experience and I'm happy enough with what I've got no matter how many times you blab on

If I or anyone else has issues with the game, then I don't see why I/we can't post about them in the games general discussion thread... as in here. If someone wishes to disagree with me on the points I or others raise, offer a counter or maybe even offer some help and advice, then what would be the problem exactly?

I don't think anyone would object to negative opinions, I think the issue is when someone constantly posts the same thing. It's not productive, and all it does is irritate people. It's almost borderline spam.

To give an example I've seen in the past someone purchase a game, say they hate it (which is fine) then apparently sell it, but yet keep posting their issues over and over again. What are they hoping to achieve from that?

When people react, the person then takes it as though people aren't happy reading negative opinions, which isn't the case at all, the issues people have are people constantly repeating the same thing over and over again.

If I'm totally honest on this forum those types of similar posts are magnified as there aren't a large number of different members posting. Infact if you look through the threads it tends to be the same posters all the time, so if one person has repetitive posts they tend to stand out more. It wouldn't be so apparent if there were a large number of different members posting.

Cheers Matt. Gave these a wee go and improvement is there without doubt. I think I need to set the gamespeed to normal though when playing, as it was a little too sluggish for me playing as my beloved Partick Thistle, but I wouldn't say that is the sliders fault and more just limitations/shortcomings with the game itself. But still, these have freshened the experience up nicely; even saw the COM try a shot from something resembling distance earlier.

Glad you tried them out, we're really enjoying them on OS. Just a couple tweaks to get it on the right path.

Thank you Matt, these are great so far. The only thing is I left my shooting and passing error at 50 because I'm full manual.

Had a really good game in CM as Barnsley against an Austrian team in a pre season tournament. It finished 0-0 but was such a battle. Scrappy sometimes and then end to end and then scrappy again.

Matt have you noticed that custom sliders work this year for CPU teams? I think this game has potential if all the tactics for each team were set like real life.

Thanks again :)

I believe they do work. You can tell when you're up against a team that hoofs it up the pitch, and when they choose to just keep possession and slowly build up. We're in for a treat if that is maintained throughout the patch updates.

Cheers Matt i'll try this. Got to admit out of the box and even with my slider settings from 16 last year i wasnt feeling it until your first set of sliders came along. Really enjoying it now, it's a superb game, especially on manual.

Glad to hear that. Yes, please let me know what you think.

*******

Next post will have most recent update on Set #2 from OS, not many, but some tweaks to really improve it. Still working on maybe 2 more things, then we should be good to go. At least as good to go a pre-patch update can do, right?

Well you've bored the titties off of me if I'm being honest

Real simple answer to that. Dont read the posts then. If it bores you, you've obviously took the effort to read through my thoughts. So thanks for that. Very much appreciated.

Only way EA Sports will listen is by making noise. Enough noise was made about the Premier League scoreboard and now it looks like they will do something about it.

None of us should be thinking about FIFA 18. The absolute focus should be on making the current product better.

Regards the responsiveness issues, I really wish people would stop talking about online. I'm not playing online. All this was going on in single player, exhibition. 1000's of people have said the same thing about button delay and stuttering, can they all be wrong?

People were saying the same thing about the demo also.

"It's your TV, it's your console, it's online"

Tested out your sliders tonight. Absolutely great!

First game Ajax vs Ado den Haag. Easy win, game was played in afternoon/summer/dry conditions. Much more battles but Ado is just not a great team.

2nd game was Roma (me) vs Napoli. Conditions evening/wet. Flow of the game was faster. I immediately noticed that both teams are better than those of my previous match. Went ahead 1-0 quite quickly, i was the better team all game long but it still ended in 1-1 since i neglected to score more goals.

3rd and final game Liverpool (me) vs Tottenham. Man what a game. Tottenham gave me absolutely no time on the ball.
They scored 1-0 with a header (my defender was twice the size of Deli but somehow he didn't go for the ball? I believe it is no longer possible to head a ball by using x on ps4???). I managed to score 1-1 in a counter with a deflected shot (really ugly / dirty goal but i was happy to equalise).
Tottenham scored 2-1......because of button lag. I tried to clear a ball but the input was somehow late or not registred. Really hope they fix this.
After this it was a very very hard battle. I tried to equalise going all out leaving lots of space to Tottenham.
In the end i managed to end the game in a 2-2 draw.
Amazing very hard fought game.

This is all on pro difficulty. After game 1 i thought it was too easy, but for now i will keep things as they are.

Thanks a lot Matt for these great sliders. The game has really come alive with them, i only now realise how stale it sometimes was.

I didn't read all your posts. Probably the first two and when I started the third I realised I'd already read it all twice so gave up.

I don't touch sliders. Never have. The game and modes I play are out of the box and I'm happy enough with it.

There's more to worry about in life than this so I'll leave you to it

Matt's slider are great, not game savers but give some people what they need to make it that bit harder and more simulation. I come in here sometimes to asked for advice and find out how to get the best out of it. Not to get into arguments with people who have different opinions of a certain game. I consider myself lucky particularly this year as i believe both games are close to excellent. I'm pissed of about some little things but if i spam or troll i'm going to piss people off who want to read and get some advice that will benefit the thread. So if you've said it 3 times we get it, other than that take it up with the game makers i'm sure they will listen and get right on it. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a big patch for Fifa 17 to sort some niggles out. Thanks Matt10 and anyone that's helped keep this thread decent. On another note off topic has JayGrim and JimmyGforce ran off and got married? All very quiet from them.
