FIFA 12 Demo impressions

I'm curious how much the acceleration slider setting might help combat the complete lack of inertia in Fifa12, if we ramp it all the way down, thus reducing acceleration across the board by even 1/3 surely that will help? Especially in defending the problem isn't that our defenders are too slow/unresponsive to deal with the attacker's movements but rather they are too quick/instant for our hand eye coordination, or is it that 2 weeks before my 39th birthday I'm getting too old for gaming? ;)

I'm really hoping this will help too but I have my doubts. If the acceleration slider only affects how quickly a player gets to his top speed, than that will not have any effect on how unrealistic players can move when going at normal or even Close Control speeds.

I pretty much agree although I'm maybe a bit more optimistic regarding PES. I think its AI is getting a little over-hyped though because while it's attacking AI is a joy to play with, like you said there are issues with it's defensive team AI. I also still find issues with the individual AI in situations where players don't react as they should, like going for a lose ball.

And there still can be major lapses in realism - in my last match I scored too beautiful screamers playing as Inter... both coming from Zanetti. I'm not sure that Zanetti has ever scored two goals in a match, let alone two screamers from outside the box. It can really take away from the experience. Plus, I find the ball physics to really let the game down.

But I have to say, when switching between the two demos, PES to me just feels better. This, though, was the case last year but I simply couldn't overlook its many faults elsewhere, and once you get back into FIFA you can kinda get accustomed to the movement physics. This year, though, PES is a pretty big improvement with less issues to overlook. And the second demo is so much better than the first, I'm astounded that they released the first at all.

Ironically though, because it's been so poor in FIFA in the past, if CM is a good as it looks, that in itself will guarantee much time spent in FIFA.

All these things ring sadly true. I'm still really happy with PES, in that I know that I'll be able to enjoy it this year offline, and, overall, I think it's probably my favourite football game ever made assuming the major major bugs have been ironed out.

But, and it's a big but, there is SO much which needs to be done to get this game really right. And that's fine: PES has come on a lot in the last two years. It's improving fast enough to satisfy me. FIFA isn't. Most of the issues that are in FIFA 12 were in FIFA 09 - and there is simply no reason why they shouldn't have been solved by now. With PES, it was so bad with 2008/2009 that it's understandable why they are where they are with PES 2012, but with FIFA it's a travesty of failed potential (similarly tragic to how disappointing PES 2008 was frankly).

I know which game I'm going to be playing most this year, but it will almost all be offline, primarily local multiplayer - and I'm sure me and my friends will have a blast playing it - and for that I'm looking forward to it massively. Unfortunately, I still feel that the football games are WAY behind most of the other franchises I'm looking at this year.

F1 2011, Battlefield 3, Trials Evolution, Skyrim - not only do these games seep quality from every angle, they also have strong competitors which are also very solid. Ironic, considering how much critical acclaim FIFA gets, and how many sales it gets, but football gaming fans must be some of the least provided for at the moment.

I'm really happy with PES 2012, but objectively I know that's because of how poor I find the past games in FIFA and PES, rather than because it's truly brilliant. It shows moments of brilliance, but it's just not the finished product even in terms of gameplay.

ARRGHH ITS SO FUCKING SHITE.

Im so angry. Its like FIfa 10. Its overly fast, the cpu is god even on professional! Nearly threw my controller at the tv there. Valbuena is unbelievable. Why is he not playing for some major powerhouse, i mean hes that good.

Fucking Rutter.

This may well be the god send those who play multiplayer needed but for those of us who like to play offline we are fucked if this is all we've got.

some points

Goalies are shite.
CPU tries to walk the ball in

AI can read everything you do.
AI is 100% accurate i havent seen one misplaced pass
AI just turns on a sixpence.

I loathe this. Loathe it.

Couldn't agree more. And it's too bad too, because if you took the best of each game, I think we'd then have that all-around quality we're looking for.

I dunno, maybe it's a competition thing - maybe games in other genres have to do more to stand out, whereas we only have a choice of two football games.

But unlike you, I can't say at this point whether one game will dominate my time this year. Of all that PES and FIFA have to offer, at the moment I'm most intrigued by FIFA's improved CM.

I didn't particularly like last year's games and I'm not expecting greatness out of either game this year, but I guess right now I'm hoping that just enough is done between the demos and final code to equal one if not two enjoyable experiences. Anything beyond that would be icing on the cake. The quality of both games is not quite at what I'd wish it to be, but I do still feel that this year will be a substantial improvement over last year for football games.

The AI on FIFA will (barring MASSIVE improvement) absolutely kill any offline game mode (bar kick off) for me. I really struggle to enjoy playing against the AI on the demo. Much more than with FIFA 11. I really feel sorry for Humber in this regard - so much improvement but the part outside of manager mode itself (the gameplay) is so weak.

Clubs for sure.

1v1 ranked i predict a horror show.

People play defensive and on the counter in 11, now they've made it harder to defend there are going to be some horrendous formations and tactics.

This quote will come back to haunt you Phil...

AI ain't shit compared to exploiters on 1v1 - which is all i play at the mo. Hopefully it pushes me back to clubs though.

Cant wait to try it out. Day off booked.

i hope it wont come back to haunt me. i think it is a positive step.

i have the day before, the day of release, the weekend and the monday off.

I am not sure about impact engine for the physical stuff, got a situation where my player just fall dramatically by just being bothered by an opponent, and both is in off-the ball situation.

Btw 1600 x 900 graphic looks sharp :)) Will try later with my 1080p, not feel the urge :JAY:

Nope, I'm not paying £30 for this at all.

75 minutes I got to before turning it off. By then the CPU had 8 attacks, 7 came from the wing. Arsenal not interested whatsoever in playing through the middle. Watching the CPU turning in circles with the ball with this same, sharp animation whilst it turns at 100mph regardless of whether it's Koscielny or Walcott is ridiculous.

Not for me at all. Each year EA find a way to fuck the game up and it puts me right off it. 08 had the shit reaction times, 11 had shit constant pressure, 12 has shit unrealistic turning times from the CPU players.

Yeah, I feel you, though I can't understand how you consider this AI worse than 11. Personally I find it improved, if still lacking. And hopefully it'll be better with longer halves (fingers crossed).

Yeah, I haven't seen a single big collision that hasn't looked a little off to me, and I've seen many smaller collisions that look over-exaggerated.

Just quit playing if u hate it so much man.... its a no brainer here.

Since i downloaded the pes 2012 demo 2 i didn't play fifa 12 demo tbh, but i'll try later. I really want to get used to the new defence system, if it's possible.

From what i played my biggest complains atm are:

- very confusing defence system (too many buttons, not very efficient), but i know i need to play more

- as always, other passing choice than assisted is very unbalanced compared to cpu passing skills.

- CPU attacking AI is shocking. The amount of goals Milan scored against me by just crossing to Ibra is ridiculous, and ibra success rate in headers is almost 100%

The other problem is the random feeling that i have playing in semi-assisted passing, and just for the record i played in manuall settings for more than 2 years with fifa 09 and 10 (also fifa08 a bit). For no reason, i made more mistakes when passing wiht Xavi than anyone else, i'm not kidding.

Despite all these critics, i really appreciate what EA are trying to create this year, it is definetly something different from past years despite some areas still being untouched (like players physical movements).

I think that the problem is that they have a real dificulty of finding balance combined with a more intutive and simple controlls (and yes, i'm talking about the tatical defence here). The fact that they refuse to put more inertia and weight on players movement with the ball as well as a more beliavable, faliable and criative CPU AI also bother me so much, all these things stop real progressions, wich is very sad because what EA could have produced with Fifathis generation would be immense (just take a look back at fifa08 in 2007).

I loathe it too but don't have the anger and bad feelings that you do. That's because I deleted the demo 3 hours after downloading it.

I'll still buy though as it should be decent enough for multi-player use only.

And, of course, the sliders might turn out to be effective and the cpu might actually makes some errors.

Well said. Hopefully the right amount of adjustments will be made for the final code to even things out a bit.

So this game will be good online vs humans?

Its ONLY AI off computer that ruins single player experience?

Is this the overall vibe?

As for single player nothing can macth PES1-6 master league and computer AI and player individuality still.

Having switched my buttons around like some of you suggested, i've just gone a whole half without Man City touching the ball. They're making mistakes, passing to me, kicking it out and just playing crap!!! I've bossed it and loved every minute of it, first time this has happened.

Maybe it's finally clicked. It helps changing them defensive buttons too for sure.

RVP is awesome, I have no idea how I did this but had I of pulled it off I'd have pulled myself off....

What was the button config you're all using again? I really don't want to give up on it :(

I don't have the demo yet.

Is it possible to play as a 'player' rather than a whole team (like in BAP mode) exhibitions in the demo?

I doubt it but if so, it's gonna tempt me more to get it.

Contain to Rb, 2nd man press to A, push/pull to X

You can play as the keeper ;) You need links to download it manually? As I remember you don't have xbox live?

(Alternate scheme here)

Standing Tackle (X) on A, Contain (A) on RB, Team mate contain (RB) on X.

Cheers Tom, will give that a try later. It's still not going to fix the stupid turning but it might do something to bring me back into it.

Fucking hate the CPU wing attack. They score 6 goals, and all 6 is tap in.
Run.Sudden stop.Circle.Run Again.

Im just angry mate because theres stuff they didnt need to do. i dont even think the ball physics needed taht much messing with either. its all unecessary.

assisted is not as assisted as fifa 11.

the play is slower

defending is actually an art now and you have to really think about your positional play as well as trying to put a foot in

i think these are all positives, especially for manual players

a step in the right direction imo - plays more simulation than arcade

will see how it plays online (that is the true test, for me anyway)

Wow... i was tinkin about that last tweet now... the tatical defendin for Clubs can be very fun, players wil try to respect their position and role on the field. It may be awesome.

I really want to get used to the TD.

I really want to et used to it (TD).

exactly.

clubs was mostly headless chickens looking for cheap goals.

they will have to adapt to be able to achieve it this year (i hope)

less pressure, more thinking = slower game = more fun

i am optimistic :WORSHIP:

I see. As always thanks for the quick replay dude.

Yeah I don't have xbox live and I also don't have my xbox connected to internet so holding out for now... but to be honest I've never been much of a DEMO person anyway. 3 minute halves just don't do it for me and might make the next 12 days pass by even slower... :P

Yep. The another problem i see with EA is their typical fear of losing sales (although, their sales will always be high mo matter wat) by making some more radical changes.

It's funny to see in the menu the amount of things you can turn on or off, assisted or manual and etc, and konami is startin to do this.

In theory, they want to please everyone with these different settings, but no one can argue that they always have the casuals in mind firstly, specialy for online. Thank God this year you can't disbale TD for online matchs.
