FIFA 12 Demo impressions

what level is demo on

I played a game and won 4-0 barca vs arsenal..dunno the diffuclty but they didnt have 1 shot.

few things of note:

Broadcast tele. This camera seems pretty cool. Thoughts

Wonder goals are too eas to score..hah I had David villa twist and turn out 2 defenders then 1v1 with goalkeeper chip into corner over his head.

I also score long ranger rifle into corner.

Skills- I wasnt really trying but seemed less skill moves than fifa 10 or I kept doing the same moves by accident. Didnt try much though.

Game seems pretty smooht sure will be fun against humans. FIFA AI is always a bit funky, too easy or too hard.

Are teams available by region or something? I'm hearing people say they're playing as United (through searches) but I have City, Arsenal, Dortmund, Barca, OM and Milan available. I just saw screens of someone playing as Bremen also.

I struggled on with the demo despite initially hating it and then realised that you can actually beat the AI at it's own game. Seriously, try playing it just like the AI - never using slow dribble, 360 dribble, precision dribble, and just move at pace and away from the defender by dribbling in circles. It actually opens up space like it does when the AI tries it against you.

And that is absolutely ridiculous. Within a couple of minutes of trying to mimick the AI as an experiment, I'd started dominating the game. Something's really amiss with this game.

Sorry Max, can't agree with you on momentum, I think it's as bad as in FIFA11 but is now easier to utilise. The AI can, as Dryzer says, dribble by taking touches of the ball that completely change the player's direction with no alteration to pace, balance, anything. This makes for some crazy turns and dribbles from the AI with players who should never be able to do so.

Well, I'm sorry you're not enjoying the demo. I found that the more I played today, the more I enjoyed it. It's got issues for sure, but I think it's an improvement over 11, and at the moment I'm enjoying the challenge of having to defend as well as attack.

But you never know with FIFA - maybe tomorrow it'll drive me nuts. Plus, the final version is always somewhat different than the demo, so maybe you'll be fortunate and EA will do just enough tweaking to make it more enjoyable.

And I'm not sure how anyone can say that player movement hasn't been improved when last year you could slide around like crazy by just holding jockey, with defenders making outrageously impossible tackles. The problem I think is that while defensively player movement is much improved, it hasn't been equally improved when dribbling, and the CPU especially is able to exploit this imbalance. Hopefully this can be improved somewhat with the CPU acceleration slider but I'm not particularly hopeful. Our best hope is that tweaks are made for final release.

I really hope EA goes as far as to implement specific AI for top teams and top players. The AI plays in a generic way for all teams. Sucks.

Did you check the "settings"? You can change the difficulty level before you start a match.

I played as Milan against Barcelona... they had 63% possession at half-time! This is the thing I like about the new defending controls, that the CPU can now camp in my half and put me under sustained pressure. And I actually fear what they might do. Then when I finally regain the ball, I really want to protect it and have a breather. Wishing for a longer demo, naturally.

This is exactly how I feel today. I had a moan the other day about the Tactical Defending. Some of it was justified and some of it wasn't but I've given the demo a bashing today.

Here's my impressions. I've just started playing on the expert category now and not been losing. Worked my way up from intermediate.

Presentation:

+ It doesn't really need to be talked about too much. The new slow-motion tricks showing-off the player modelling (Rooney majestically doing his thang) is slick.
+ The Stadium intro is great too, as are the new winning and losing cut-scenes.
+ Some of the new face modelling is stellar.
+ The lighting is fantastic in the demo.
+ The new menu is welcomed
+ Real faces in the player Bios are welcome.
+ PES-style kit select is great.
+ The new commentary team ain't bad at all.
+ The crowd are great. Both audibly and visually.
+ Nets looks great and the sounds of scoring is sweet.
+ New cutscenes after a shot or a save are nice. I like the appealing for cards/throw ins/corners etc too.
+ Love the new camera.

- Still too much slope on some of the player's shoulders. Sometimes it looks like they have NO shoulders at all. Looks weird.
- Team Management screen/menu is a depressing sight. It needs an overhaul.
- Some players have MAHOOSIVE forearms, wrists and hands. Seriously.
- The Precision dribbling animation needs a lot more love. As does the LT+RT tight dribble. Much more love needed there.
- Does it bug anyone else that the players do everything open hands and also can't seem to lay hands by their side?
- Longer replays please.

Gameplay:

+ Tactical Dribbling adds patience to the frantic world of FIFA. It's alien at first but once it clicks you'll say "oh...". In a good way.
+ Precision dribbling allows you to keep the ball closer than a left stick push would and pick out a team mate...
+ ... the AI is a big step up from FIFA11 in that your team actually move around and try to avoid being marked. In conjunction with precision dribbling you can create some nice goals.
+ Bad passers of the ball can actually miss-hit passes. Bad tacklers can't dispossesses as easily too.
+ Pro Passing is much better with regards to left/right error now.
+ CPU AI now pass the ball about a bit if they are in trouble. Still hard to defend down the flanks though it more my fault for not just sheparding the crosser onto his bad foot.
+ Contain works well with the running jockey. Many time the CPU has been forced into playing a bad pass or long ball after sustained containment. Almost as if the "contain for 6 seconds in the cone" intro to the demo was a clue..
+ "Pulling" works well to mess up a shot or pass.
+ The defensive shape is no longer a problem if you choose to contain with the right person.
+ Messi is a God in the game.
+ Aguero is Jesus in this game.
+ Silva is the Holy Ghost in this game.
+ Long ball can be an effective strategy down the flank now
+ The shooting is the best of ANY football game we've player. The physics are spot on and the charge bar is spot on. The elevation is perfect too. The volleys are immense. As are the headers.
+ Keepers are human again with only the odd superman dive happening.

- Throw the flair button away. WTF?
- Who Arranged those buttons for tactical defending? Holding RB to get your guy over to mark while marking a potential pass is clusterfuck at times and can lead to silly goals.
- EA have given us so many new things to learn and so much to learn them with. There are 3-4 types of dribble and 3-4 ways to defend in this game if you start talking about different combinations you could b here for years. Problem is you have a split second to use it against the AI otherwise you're toast.
- More variety in shot animations please EA. Love the feel of shooting and would like to see many more shot animations depending on what foot you're on and where you're aiming etc.
- Top players need to have snappier passing and control. A pass and move should unsettle the oppositions...
-... Inertia is badly needed in the FIFA franchise. It's one of the last important things needed. you can beat a player in FIFA12 but it's more down to just how quick you can turn with some of the skilful players. Faster than the defending animation
- More animations for the curling shot please.
- The CPU makes more passing errors depending on how poor a passing side you're up against. Dortmund were knocking the ball too long on long balls against me at times and missing through balls as well. Arsenal and Barca... eer... NOT SO MUCH :|

I've missed something for sure but overall I'm happy that FIFA12 has a midfield finally. Finally some passing and build-up play. You care a lot more for possession cause you have to defend VERY dangerous attacks from the CPU when you don't have it. The facts the CPU doesn't bum-rush you everywhere is a nice start. It's also nice that you can slow the pace down if it all gets too overwhelming and just pass it back.

It's been good to play with Man City in the demo. They have a great squad to mess with I must admit. This is definitely the best FIFA I've player. It's a thinking man's FIFA I'd say. FAR from perfect. Still a bit twitchy and forced at times but far more engaging than the mind-numbing FIFA11. And that's why the trickster kiddies will be PISSED at what EA.

P.S. They need to throw away that flair button. They talk about tight schedules and put in a fucking FLAIR BUTTON  Jesus. This isn't FIFA Street.

i disagree. i think PES is more challenging.

my mate who aint really a massive fan also said how fifa is easier then PES

Having played both (and clocked in maybe hundreds of hours of PES2011) I must say that This year's FIFA is harder to defend in. PES2012 is great but for some reason it feels loose? That's another thread though.

FIFA is still easier to get a shot off, I agree, but I can pass the ball around wit EASE in PES this year. Not really having to worry until the final 3rd. In FIFA this year I shit bricks if anyone comes near me .

I know you can change it but I played 1 game on default settings without cahnging. I havent had time to play another game. Ill check later but was just asking as 4-0 was easy.

Ah ok. Yeah well if you click next, next etc when it starts up it would have been on Amateur most likely. Unless you're super duper FIFA player :P

Build-up needs a lot of patience this year. Something that's neigh-on IMPOSSIBLE in a demo this short. I can get a couple but If i push too hard i get scored against.

Four matches in, the CPU has not fouled me once. I realize the halves are only 3 minutes but this has always been a problem w/FIFA and among other issues, will always keep it from being a sim.

isnt there a fix to make the halfs longer or are you playing on consoles?

Yeh I won 4-0 on ametuer lol.....well at least i got to score amazing goals. (easy with no defense)

Wow. Just played a few matches in the FIFA demo after playing the second PES demo, and man does FIFA feel really poor in comparison. The weighting of the players in PES is simply glorious. I didn't particularly like PES 2011, was pretty disappointed with the first demo this year, but the second PES 2012 demo, aside from ball physics, is pretty darn good.

Man, really hope EA have done some serious tweaking for the final version.

If you mean glorious as in clunky. Scripted, on rails, crap atmosphere and with shite keepers then yea I agree. I'm not sure what game you've been playing . Whilst FIFA isn't perfect it beats PES hands down ..again

I get that for a long while with each play of FIFA. I might have to have a day or two where I swear off PES before I could really get into it. It just constantly screams at me: "This feels wrong". Not that PES is flawless by any note - but that it doesn't miss out something which is now so fundamental to me.

The sense that inertia is lacking from the movement has been there all along in FIFA but its only when directly contrasting and comparing it to PES that it's become a major inhibitor to my enjoyment.

No offence mate but if you're not going to be constructive with criticism you just end up sounding like a fanboy whinger.

PES scripted? I guess you haven't seen the finesse shot in FIFA that goes in all the time or the cross/header scripting?

PES keepers are improved and rather decent at the moment. Whilst NEITHER game is perfect, there's a place for both. You can't say it "beats" it when it's just a matter of personal choice. You "prefer" it.

And while we're on the topic - why don't you list the FIFA 12 demo shortcomings? For example, the PES demo "at times" has better 'impact engine' than FIFA lol

Inertia + AI = football
no Inertia + weaker AI = different football..

Scripted and on rails? That right there is the ultimate FIFA fanboy lazy critisism. PES stopped that years ago but it's always funny to see the old flaws still being used to bash a game. Clearly shows how much that person has (or not) played the game in the last three years.

I'll return the fanboy attack and say FIFA is a sprint fest. It's not and hasn't been for years but it's exactly the same as you saying the above about PES,

This forum is great, the only place where a video game is treated like a religion.

Anyway, I might do what Rodolero suggested and not play PES for a couple of days and stick to FIFA and see if I can get into it a bit more. As I've said, the general gameplay is there and I really want to enjoy the gameplay so I can play CM but going between FIFA and PES just isn't working. The inertia and movement is just too different and I need time to adapt to FIFA probably. Especially given that I've played PES a lot over the last year whilst barely touching FIFA so I'm moulded to wanting to play how PES plays.

I'm going to re-map the buttons for defending as other people have suggested and see how I go. Not that I find the defending hard, per se`, but the brain to finger connection gets a bit confusing when trying to reach for different buttons than you're used to.

Same reason I improved on PES last year (my first PES game) when I got my button mapping to something that worked for me. After that I could focus on gameplay, not on remember the correct button during the heat of battle.

Seems to be more time on the ball now in FIFA, which is what I wanted. And some better dribbling available. Also noticed the right stick knock on past a defender works better as they don't just win the ball by sticking out a leg lazily.

I also was able to skip past the keeper with the left stick only in the arena for the first time.

There's no doubt that they've made a bit of a mess of the button choices (a bit irritating considering I specifically fed this back)... although they did move flair passing from the left trigger (I think this forum would have actually exploded if that hadn't been done).

The sad thing of having precision dribbling on L1, is that you have to let go of it, if you want to avoid 1-2 pass, lobbed shot or lobbed throughball. But maybe that's just something I need to get used to. For me it would be better to have it on L2+R2 (where that other dribbling, that you never use, is on now), so I'll press L2 for close control, and then R2 for even closer control.

But I thought it was on L2/LT? As Rod said, L1/LB is for flair passing.

Unless you have a different setup?
