FIFA 12 Demo impressions

I tried the game on Semi-Pro last night purely to test the AI's performance. Although it's certainly an easier game, they do take shots from outside the area which surprised me. They also mess a lot of their passing up, which is perhaps less surprising.

Yep, like I said before, changing your button configuration like you've used in previous FIFA's opens the demo up and gives a more satisfying realistic game. The contain button just fucks the gameplay up imo.

Very strange that EA doesn't realise this and changes it so it's default.

Oh my word.

How weird is that. Just changing the configuration changes the whole game. Speechless.

what configuration are you using now?

This one.

Standing Tackle (X) on A, Contain (A) on RB, Team mate contain (RB) on X.

I now feel more in control.

Ok the speed is still an issue to an extent but sow of that can be sorted with custom tactics and sliders.

It's weird too as the CPU has become less stupid. It was like it knew you couldn't use the defensive system at first and so did loads if stupid dribbles. Since I'm using it properly now it's a bit calmer because I'm blocking off it's routes.

Maybe there's hope after a really frustrating few days

well, the ball thru will get exploited plus I think pes clearly is better- gk running out -brilliant, kung fu clearly at the back-better.

Although fifa has more to offer! I hope they can make the gk n clearly at the back better.

Okay I'm certain now I'm not imagining this, but if you play like the AI and needlessly keep chopping back on yourself, then dribble in circles, stop, repeat just like the AI does on the wing, it confuses the shit out of the AI defenders and leaves you with a load of suddenly opened space. Pretty sure football's not meant to be played like that, I'd recommend trying it just to test it out. Try it when you're near an opponent, circling and turning even when he stands off your attacker. Space just opens up. And by turning, I mean try turning like the AI does, not using any skill modifiers and just bare direction stick movement to turn as sharply as you can.

By doing this, constantly moving in different directions even when unchallenged on the ball, it throws the AI.

Is this an AI flaw? I'm not sure because the AI does it.
Fail. :/

I love the demo so far.

I just cant get used to the tactical defense.

can someone give me a tip or something plz. I dont want to go to the old controls.

The contain function, and the new defense control setup that it brings, is unnecessary complicated. It's essentially two components that makes up the previous press function (guided jockeying and standing tackle) mapped to separate buttons, and as a result, the secondary press gets "relegated" to the bumper (RB). Which makes it awkward when you're trying to use that and run with your selected player (RT) at the same time. Only reason that I can think of why EA went with this approach is to retain some familiarity (and assists) for those who relied on the A button for homing runs.

By manually jockeying and sprinting (with the control config that's posted above), you have far more control with the pace and direction at which you want confront a dribbler. Plus your thumb is free to bring in a teammate press should you decide to mark/cover somebody else with your own player. All those years of using this method of defense has finally paid off =p

I'll give that a try Dryzer, but to be honest I still can't get over the fact that playing like the AI and doing stupid circular dribbles actually tears the AI wide open. It's like it panics and decides to counter your movement by approaching you from one direction, leaving a gaping hole for you to exploit - all by standing in front of a defender and pointlessly going round in circles, cutting back on yourself etc. Really bizarre.

Got another tip for the demo. While defending, stay off the run button (except when you need to make up space). So while trying to close passing lanes or intercept the ball, don't use the run button (R2).

This way the cpu won't dribble and turn circles on you but will try to pass the ball and sometimes make mistakes.

Hope this helps some of you. ;)

I have noticed the computer makes more passing errors having switched buttons and being more in control.

It's a start anyway. If I customise tactics and get the CPU shooting more and I slow the pace it might just work in the full game.

Was messing around in the arena. What does RB + X do (Playing on 360)? Is it a Manual shot or cross etc.?

I'v also seen that when the cpu passes the ball across the net, the pas is really powerfull, is it a low cross (x 3 times) there doing?

Yep all 360s take usb drives these days, just need to put one in the 360 that's about 3gb or more, then go to the memory option and choose configure for 360 (or something like that) then once it's done put the flashdrive onto your PC and copy over the content folder into the existing content folder (or you can just burn the content folder onto the root of a DVD), there's a guide how to inject the demo onto the flashdrive here: http://zx-psp.blogspot.com/2010/07/how-to-inject-xbox-360-demosarcade.html

Here's the links:

Just two parts, should be interchangeable :)

Hey thanks again!

Some of those files have been removed and so the links are no longer useful but the first ones seem to work still so I'm getting it from there. :)

Just to clarify, so in order to copy the content folder from my PC (once it's downloaded and extracted) to the USB, do I have to download XTAF USB Explorer and use the steps in that link to the guide you sent? Or can I just use normal copy paste and it would do the job?

Yeah I saw some are down but there's enough I think to get the two parts :) Yeah I think only via that xtaf, but you can try copy and paste, the problem is that sometimes when you format a flashdrive in the 360 the PC then thinks it's full when it's really not (hence needing that xtaf app to inject the folder)

Having said that, I think we'd like to see more mistakes made by the opposition AI so the game doesn't get boring quickly or feel repetitive and stale.

No one wants robotic AI that plays out the same every game. I'll reserve full judgement until I've had a fair few games with proper match length settings.

Mate, don't forget there's going to be independent Sliders for both human and CPU so if you think the passing percentage is too high for the AI, you can adjust it :))

I see. Thanks.

About had enough of the demo now, I've customized my controls that many times to get to grips with the new defending but its just not happening. Fifa seem to think we have more fingers than Captain Birdseye.

Back to Pes2012 demo for me.

I'm afraid I might be joining ya. I want to love the fact we don't have pressure anymore, but it's just as unrealistic in the other direction now. Contain is actually back off all the way to the goal line without engaging the attacker.

Three buttons for defending, I wish I was in that meeting.

I think the saying is 'a camel is a horse designed by committee'.

Theres one too many ideas gone into TD.

Wonder if Steve Jobs is well enough to sort out usability of this defending system.

Guys, I'm looking on the web and I'm having no joy. Admittedly I'm a spaz when it comes to techy stuff :)

I have a new laptop. Windows 7 32 bit. I've DL'd some drivers to get the 360 pad working so I can play the demo on my laptop as well as my PS3 and XBOX. I can't get it working though!

Can anybody help?

Also, I'm sure I read that you can extend the half length too. How do you do that?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Sorry if wrong thread but I can't find answers elsewhere so maybe somebody has had the same issue.

Cheers.

So how do you do this new dribbling malarkey?

Depends on ya setup. Hold all of your trigger buttons one by one. The one that makes you grind to a halt and do a little tappy animation is the new dribble system. Not the same a skilled dribbling. It's actually pretty useful just doesnt quite look right. Your player will protect the ball and give you more time but it's not really a skill thing.
