eFootball PES 2020 Discussion Thread (PS4/Xbox One)

Unless you're proper weird and obsessed with everything being as 'realistic' as possible, like myself, I wouldn't recommend the editing.

It took 2 nights to scroll through 21000 players in the transfer screen, write down the duplicates, then 3 nights to sift through various websites finding players to replace them. Once I find one I then have to check if they are already on the game, so it's a arduous process.

To save time, I've just based copied then tweaked a few stats and edited appearance and names. Fuck doing every player from scratch, would take about 6 months.

Quite nice though, cos' most the Prem and major European teams now have between 7 & 10 'youth' players to call upon.

If we weren't in lock down and the fact the missus had been superb with me sat on my ass, sipping beer, editing PES while she watches Tiger King & shit on Netflix, then I'd not have done it as I used to have a hectic life 😂😂

I'm finding of I do a bit of painting here, cut the grass, tidy up etc... She ain't worried what hours I put into my gaming.

so who's here in EVO Web made the statement re PES 2020 and Transfermarkt?

[PES2020] Master League will integrate transfer data form Transfermarkt

just curious about this statement here: each player has a new field in the database that stores the market value from Transfermarkt.

transfermarkt.jpg

Not sure about the TransfrMarket thing.

While editing I found 2 Robbie Burton's who is a young player at Arsenal.

The one on the free transfer list, his value was £135million!! Dunno if it is a glitch.

On the whole, PES have got values quite good this year. The fact you can't just sign Mbappe, Messi and Suarez off the bat and if you're a lower ranked side, probably never will, is excellent.

I'm also seeing a good number of values go up. I was doing a Deportivo ML and signed Camavinga. Can't remember what I paid but his release clause was only 6 or 7mill. He had a dynamic growth and went up to 81 rated. Checked his contract and he now wants a release clause of around £35mill so it's reflecting his rating going up.

My fear was this wouldn't happen but it does.

This patch continues the konami pattern-3 patch cycle.
Patch A makes the game more dynamic free and exciting..
Patch B tries to make it heavier and more measured bit it becomes dull.
Patch C finds the middle ground.
They've done this over and over since august.

This patch does restore DP4 excitement etc. Dribbling, especially little right stick flicks is great again. AI feels a lot more alive, although back to high shot success on SS.
And generally, the game just looks extraordinary, graphics, animations, the patterns of play, the way the ball looks as it moves, it could be TV at times.

But...I just feel a little listless when I play. And it's been this way for a month now with pes. The game feels a little empty, and it shouldn't cos it 'looks' spot on.

Three issues I struggle to get past are

lack of pes 2011-15 type pa1, where there is potential direction error on EVERY pass, not just when play is fast or computer decides there will be an error.
It takes the knife-edge jeopardy away (manual is not the answer, manual is a paradigm shift in terms of how to play, not just an adjustment to skill level. It also reduces the intensity of the game overall).
Pass error effects dribbling too, because you're less likely to dribble in dangerous areas if you know the next pass could go wrong. In pes now, you can dribble whenever knowing that the only danger in the next pass is whether or not one of your players will be available or 'reachable' with the pass, because if they are, generally aiming at them secures the pass. So the overall thrill of every moment is reduced with this lack of pass error.

The second issue is player individuality. It is there, it just doesnt really come to bear on games beyond dribbling and a few other aspects.

The final one is the biggie. The game often feels canned and empty. Even when theres variety and random things happening (random in the sense of the subjective experience, I accept there is no random in a computer game), even then it feels canned. The world of the game, of an individual match does not feel alive, in the way it did in pes 5 or even up to pes 13 (I rarely enjoyed ps3 pes).
More importantly for me, the world of each match does not feel malleable, or pliable or manipulate. It feels like I'm stuck doing things within its limits. That is how all games work, but a good game hides that feeling. Everything feels rubber banded. I get why people have been enjoying les 17 because it didnt feel that way, neither did pes 18 in the end, even though they didnt have a free pa1.

Another way I'd describe it is that the world of each match does not feel responsive or elastic. It feels set, in stone.
I realised this today when I fired up fifa 20 after playing DP6. Fifa has the weirdest animations and physics and does not look anywhere near as close to a real match on tv as pes. But...one thing happened to me today that reminded me of a pes ps2 moment.

As i sent in a cross along the ground from the left flank, I had control of piszcek for Dortmund, so i was coming into the box from right back. I was a little to the right of the penalty spot. I decided to place the ball in to the far corner, along the ground, using the goalies momentum as he would be hurrying across his goal line to line himself up with me.
As I tried it (I didn't get the shot far enough into the far corner so the goalie got fingers to it) I felt this sudden rush of joy, elation and sadness all mixed into one and flashed back, literally in time and I was playing as valencia against depor at the riazor, pes 5 in that beautiful dusky lighting it has during the day.

And I realised why...it was that feeling of being able to mould individual moments of a match to your choosing, the ability to use a moment of insight and craft and see it play out on the pitch, not in a binary fashion, but in an elastic way, where the outcome feels uncertain, where there is a feeling of something bring created 'in the moment'.

And in that moment, the scales fell from my eyes. I realised why virtually every pes since ps2 days has left me empty after a couple months. There simply isnt that texture, that feeling of depth that you can actually travel through in a tangible way, so that the experience gets inside you, so that it mirrors the way we actually think and move, organically and in stages, with uncertainty.

The thing is, through the year on year nature of pes, because that feeling was lost through successive game engines that have often blended into each other, its not always been obvious, to me at least, exactly when that feeling, that quality in the game was lost. I've become conditioned year on year by what's been put in front of me by konami and have gradually forgotten what it was that got me so excited by pes, that made it so damn addictive, often having an almost religious experience playing it, especially pes 3 and 5.

If I tried that action now in pes 20, too often, the game either rubber bands and the keeper magically warps across his line, my shot goes straight at the goalie or it goes in and the goalie does nothing and although what I wanted to happen happened, the world of the game didnt actually respond to my idea as it should, leaving the whole moment feeling empty.

Sorry, long post I know...

Great post.

I wanna be able to love this game and BAL/fixed cursor gameplay. I just can't over its glaring issues.

New patch, new thoughts. One match played in BAL at home against Chelsea. 20 minutes. Top player. Game speed -2.

I cannot get past how bad the AI is defensively.

Batshuayi is played in clean through on goal and neither of my CBs bothers to try and get back and stop him. Instead they run parallel, like they're his security detail, and leave McTominay to deal with him until he gets into the box.

Willian scores due to a combination of bad player positioning and bad player switching. Pause it at 3 seconds. To begin with why is Dalot so out of position? Why are Mctominay and Bruno almost on top of each other and yet my CBs spread so far apart? Why do Maguire and Lindelof both react in way that gives them no chance to intercept the ball? I just don't understand.

Chelsea wasn't immune either. I scored twice this match. Watch Marcos Alonso's positioning on my first goal. Why is he giving me so much space in the box? Why is matching my run instead of anticipating the danger before the ball is passed to me? And Alonso does it again on my second goal; gives me way too much space and doesn't react to the threat I pose until it's way too late.

I don't know what Kurt Zouma is doing here. Or why Jorginho is left to be the one to track Greenwood's run. But I do know that if Jorginho is the one marking Greenwood, at that point, he should continue to do so until the danger is clear and they've successfully transitioned to defense. It shouldn't suddenly switching to Zouma who is further way from Greenwood, and frankly, completely out of position. This is what I mean when I say this game lacks logic surrounding the transitional phases. I'll take my hockey assist though.

Before I started this save, I edited a few things about United. One thing I changed was making United a short passing team. If a player's in enough space, there's nothing wrong with the occasional long ball. But I have no idea why in the world McTominay would think this is a good decision. I passes like this routinely and I have no idea why.

I also can't get past how bad positioning is.

Look at the positional radar map on the right. Look at the massive whole in the middle of my defensive shape. Look at the massive hole in the middle of the pitch right here. Look at the state of this. It's egregious honestly and it happens every single match.

The match finished 4-2. Here are the final stats. How did I feel about the match overall? I think I almost had fun. But the issues with positioning, awareness, and player switching continue to plague this game. These are flaws that won't be fixed in a patch. These are issues that demand a complete revamp of the system that controls them. Because, as a BAL/fixed cursor player, these issues are always going to hit me harder than most. Because my teammates are AI as well as my opponents.

Here's the full match highlights for anyone interested. Cheers for reading.

Had a lot of fun with the games I have played with this patch, if it had the old R2 dribble instead of the right stick I would play this thing A LOT.
Also can we please have online co-op games with only real teams / only Manual. I would switch out basic shooting which I use now to be able to play PES in Co-op with some proper manual passing instead of this boring ass pass support system. I mean, I still can, but the opponents will always have an advantage.
The passing issue is bad, really bad, but the MyClub teams I face in there with my friends TORTURE MY SOUL. Keep your Beckham/Ronaldinho/Neymar fantasy for yourselves, please.

The Boca away kit looks sick

@slamsoze I've been having that issue too (DP5) - it helps somewhat to position them higher up the field and to make them CMF

Also, no Kaka this time, but there is Bergakmp unexpectedly

@abcdefg1 how did you check for duplicates? Nice post btw, I second it.

DP5 SS. controller down. opponent cpu just stands there.
DP6 SS. controller down. opponent cpu still stands there or backs off but within a couple of seconds will attack to take the ball off you.

DP5 was bad.

I'm getting a bit tired though - klashing up things, isureapering up things, then a new DP comes out and again playtesting.

YAAAAAAAWN.

i like abcdefg's idea of editing ML players but YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN too much effort at the mo.

the game lacks consistency through its updates. how it considers itself a potential esport is laughable for this very reason.

once footy resumes everyones going to fat from eating pancakes and all the player models will need to be redone and released as PES 2021 body packs.
I tested that in particular... no change. Still I could stand there for hours!

DP6 is a bit better then DP5 but nothing against vanilla, imo.

So it’s 2017 again, best in gen! :D

This, 100%. That's the reason I don't play it since December - one of the worst things to happen to online co-op modes in football games is them mixing myClub and normal teams...

Defensively this game is a f*ing mess. CPU reaction time is godly and for whatever reason their physicality is off the charts making aggressive pressuring useless.

DP4 was the most enjoyable. 5 and 6 have just gone downhill.

I assume he advanced searched without typing anything, in order to list all players. Then the best point of relevance is to sort them by name. This is when you hunt for "official" duplicates. You scroll down and you scan for doubles.

I have checked out this new update with no hope wahtsoever...and yeah....Player ID for the COM is still non existent, all players play the same football. Team ID for the COM is still non existent, COM cant sub a defender for an attacker or vica versa, nor change formation completely according to the scenario of the game. I dont even have to mention that the COM still over utilize the pass to the striker, turn and shoot tactic. Still a boring lackluster with no reason to play, which too bad since the gameplay and the actual football on the pitch is more than good. One more update left i guess for the EUROS, i really doubt they would care to fix the game at this point. Maybe next year i guess.

Oh i thought you meant could we edit them ourselves.

But yeah I've seen values change as players have gotten older and better/worse

well yes, that was the original question but since I learnt that it is not possible to do so (well at least not in PS4 platform), it is good to at least hear that players market price is dynamic in PES 2020 ML.

to be honest, I haven't religiously played ML (since ... I can't remember) but from memory, players' market price weren't realistic; from what I recall, it's either their market price don't reflect today's world (i.e. Jadon Sancho @ $117m or Neymar @ $128m) or their prices don't increase or spike nor decrease or took a dip.

having played FIFA CM for the past 2 years, players' market price fluctuates (don't ask me by what logic) which is good to hear that it is now reflected in ML.

on this subject, does anyone here use SMcCutcheon .ted editor tool? do you know who Star Rating will impact on players' market price? in this example, I picked Gabriel Veron; being a created player (fake), I'm not sure what his 'manufactured market price' be but I wanted to make sure that he ain't cheap in ML.

Hi all,

Thought I'd log-in to say that I've been playing the lite version online after a gap of... oh I dunno, about 7 years?

It's got obvious flaws but I quite like it. One thing in particular is how committing to attacking leaves you in a terrible position to be counter-attacked. It's so easy to push everybody forward but you'll likely be punished if/when you lose the ball. This makes me play defensively, looking for openings when it seems right. Shooting isn't bad either. I mean it's incredibly easy to get shots away but you know there's such a low chance of scoring them. A 30-yarder might seem tempting but it's rarely going to lead to a goal. This makes me play for openings that are probably a little more realistic.

Now the main flaws:
  • Passing. There's no error to passes. It's easier pinging it around than playing smart. I've mitigated this by turning the radar off (yes, really) and putting the camera to long rather than wide. It's quite fun as you can only pass to players you see, which is more realistic.
  • Freekicks and penalties. Easiest thing in the world. They used to be such a good feature but have dumbed it down massively. I realised immediately that the only way to defend them is by moving the GK.
  • Body strength. Players have none and you can't hold onto the ball well. It's not terrible but it means you have to pass and move a lot.
  • One-twos. Again like passing, way too easy. There's not much skill involved as passing error is almost zero. I've been countering this by simply expecting them any time the opposition is in the final third, and ergo not pushing my defenders out of position.

I've also been reading about how defenders/defensive midfielders are OP and can see that. Players like Matic and Maguire dominate games. I'm on the fence about this though as I'm very happy attackers don't seem superhuman. I don't fear defending against Messi or Ronaldo or Lewandowski knowing that a strong defensive game can stop them.

Anyway, it's free. I can hardly complain.

I gave it a chance this morning. Playing against a rather weaker team, I needed a win, and they scored in the last minute of the game. That would be ok, but the fact is the way they scored... I had three guys on top of their attacker, a CB, a DM and my LB, all of them forcing the guy to loose the ball, pushing but never being able to move to the front of him on my own box. He was on a narrow angle, and also my GK was covering that same angle. He not only was able to hold the ball all the time, against three defenders! but also shoot slowly, and score, on a tight angle... This of course, after a few minutes of CPU passing and winning balls all over the place... I already knew it was coming.

This sort of thing is furstrating. Again the same feeling "why I do I still bother" when there´s no understanding of what´s going on, there´s no logical reactions to my actions, when a small, lower strenght guy holds the ball against 3 tall and strong players, all grabing him, and he still scores just because...

I´m done. After playing PES 2017 and even PES 6 (imagine that) for a few days, this game has become the most stupid and frustrating thing I´ve ever had on this generation.

It’s actually this year! ;)
I’m fully with you mate.
Been playing DP6 fixtures (Bayern vs. Norwich and Warford vs. Everton) in 2017 for comparison reasons a couple of times and the AI sticks out like night and day.
DP6 is better than DP5 but all DP’s before were better, imo. And vanilla and demo are better than any DP, imo.

I’ll give the next DP for sure a try. But as I said before: I’m very satisfied that i have a good football game on PS4 to go to.

Youre right man :D

Dp4 may have been the one. It was such a step forward in AI and feel of the players and ball physics, almost felt an old fashioned mid-year ps2 style update game live evolution etc...
DP6 brought some of it back but not the beautiful fade on long passes...

Yeah the transfers were one of the worst parts about master league for that reason imo. This year things are a bit more realistic with some of the values being higher, but it still definitely has its issues

Same for me. Im having so much fun with this game. Its not perfect theres is some thing that I dislike but overall its the best PES I ever played.

Have you guys notice that there is another way to trap the ball? Let me try to explain, the most knowed is:

Full press of L stick, player moves before trap the ball.

Holding sprint button, player stop the ball and stays still.

Holding R2 trigger plus L stick, player fake to trap to one side then goes to another.

Holding sprint plus L stick, player moves before tap the ball ahead.

Tapping twice plus Lstick, same but taping the ball further.

Now theres a new diferent type of trapping the ball, new for me at least:

Holding L stick just a little, not streaching the L stick to the end, before trap the ball, the player taps the ball a little bit WITHOUT moving, you know? Your player stays stationary and just taps the ball a little, like pressing R1 and R2 on old gen PES. Its very usefull to set the ball for a shot on tigh spaces.

Well this is new for me.

This details that make this game so footbalistic. Its so much about thinking before you trap the ball and there is so much things you can do. Not fancy moves you know? I really hope that Konami stay on this track.

I was taking about that slight L-Stick movement before.... nobody seems to use it though. Great that you bring it up!!

People tend to moan a lot.... never knowing about all the possibilities in PES! ;)
Knowing what’s possible doesn’t make the whole game better. It is what is is. But you could get so much more out of it!
I’m not judging, just saying...

Just played my first few matches with DP6. Would describe it as solid. Everything seems a bit more refined. Player switching, animations, passing weight, shooting, first touch, AI. But my biggest positive is - finally finally finally - the removal of the excessive stumble animation after loosing the ball. Now you can actually engage in a little fight over the ball in close spaces and things can and do happen. Its not just watching animations play out. Already had some really cool random stuf happening here and there. Its not as alive as the demo or vanilla, it doesnt make me crave another game, but it does keep me involved easier then before. Now off to play a first game of 2017 since 4 years to see what all the fuss is about.

Update:
Nope, 2017 wont stick for me. I did like it at the time and i get why people would prefer it even now. What i like is that it seems more true to the PES vision that you need to work your way up the field. The field seems bigger also. Its (way) less direct. Passes can be off, fouls are made. You feel much more vulnerable and dependend on your star players.

It makes you want to work yourself in the game and overall has a more realistic feel to it, more differences in tempo, more differences in players. However, i just cant go back. It does inspire and motivate me to find fixtures and team setups and even stadia that emulate this vision better inside 2020. There must be a way.

I must admit I've gone back to try it from version 1.0 and after giving it a proper go I'm sticking with thus. It seems very good now
