EA SPORTS FC 24

I have a very low sample size, but I think the CB jockey issue might be fixed finally.

@Matt10 you've probably spent longer than 10 minutes looking at it, is it gone for you with sliders? I'm testing some values in the gameplay files that I couldn't go anywhere near last year without it happening almost immediately and so far I haven't seen it yet...

If it is gone, that'll be extremely helpful (assuming behaviour is also not impacted). The slidey feeling is as bad as it's been in FC24, so if we can drop those values lower than we could and not have the negatives we'd be in a better place than previous years...

Edit: Played another half hour or so and I didn’t see it happen once!
Looks to be gone. I saw some jogging, but it was relative to the position. It's definitely not as bad as previous years where the defender just leaves the attacker to run free. I have been testing a really low Sprint speed to get rid of the slidey animations as well.

For those who don't know, here is an explanation of the CB jockey, taken during a live stream from FIFA 23 when we were trying to find a good Sprint speed:

Almost finished the 10 hour trial, with like 1 hour left. Liked what I've played tbh. I see a lot of good stuff. I'm not going to worry too much on the negative, as it doesn't ruin the game for me. I play football on the pitch, I attack and I defend. Maybe the AI defence is a little too simple, the times I've stolen the ball off the last man, but Lagerbielke found that out in real-life and got away with it, so it does happen. I'd give maybe an 8/10 overall. Hope they fix the PSG and Barca third kits soon, as there's some stupid white template kit in there for me just now though

The way passes move... Zero acceleration, just instantly the speed of light, and collected by the recipient's boot like a metal ball to a magnet. It just looks, and feels, absolutely horrific. I don't get how anyone sees past it.

Whack the FT error up to 100. Makes no difference. FUMA makes little to no difference to pass accuracy as the CPU doesn’t bother to intercept most of the time, it just rolls past them because that would involve a complicated beyond current gen ability feature of an animation of a player turning around.

Like I said Sunday. Trial done with after 3 hours. So so poor. Passing /un fun to play /doesn't even look like a ps5 game graphically. So disappointed as I was looking forward to having a fresh football game for the year. I'm now back to playing Pes again but with a new option file. Which of course is not perfect either, but at least it plays a half decent game football and is fun to play.

It's the 1v1 element, it just makes it such a chore to play. Nothing going on around you. I'll get to half time and I'm just desperate for it to end.

You may have mentioned it before, but what is the CB Jockey issue exactly?

Are you talking about how when matching up with an attacker, it's difficult to subtly jockey and stand off - The defenders feel like trucks on ice?

"The CB Jockey issue", as far as I'm aware, usually refers to the way defenders just watch you go by without stepping towards you and/or challenging you. This is most commonly noticed when you realise simply changing your jogging direction is enough for the CB to back off you, retreating to their formational position and leaving you completely unmarked and free to score.

Ahh I understand that. I think I had known that otherwise referred to as statue-defending on here 😂

That's why I thought the jockey issue was related to something else, more close quarters like 1v1's.

Exactly what I'm doing too Matt, I'm trying to find the threshold and it's letting me go way lower than ever before and I still haven't seen it yet.

Guys, the significance of this is that we're able to slow the game down a lot more than we previously could without bringing in the negative side effects of the CBs not tracking attacking runs - and other negative behaviours that come about as a result of slower movement. For the longest time speed has always influenced behaviour and it's meant that there's a limit on how much you're able to slow everything down until the gameplay breaks.

It's still early days and there's more testing needed, but so far it appears that we're able to do so much more to bring about a more realistic pace/movement without the negatives in everything else. I've changed a lot of the gameplay files regarding movement so much lower than I've ever been able to go and it's meant the movement is so much more grounded in reality. More time is needed to make sure it's not breaking something, but tests so far are positive in this regard.

Hi Matt, I've always wondered how do you make the pitch look like this? The colour and texture seems better than everything I've seen in other gameplay videos.

Agree about this. I'm working on it! Have already seen an improvement, hopefully more to come.

Played 2 more hours.

The ground passes are simultaneously impressive in appearance and boring in feel.

It's hard to know how good various parts of the game are, because controlling the players, the most basic element, is such a distracting experience.

I could see me gleaming some enjoyment out of this if patched to be heavier. Although I am feeling that creeping feeling of repetitiveness around the final third, in terms of attacking patterns.

Agree about the movement being distracting. I'm modding it right now and I've stripped away a lot of the craziness in a lot of different ways (not just movement) and you can see the positives so much clearer when you do.

Yes, ea fc 24 feels like a game that's riddled with technology at the moment.

Aren't you just fighting a losing battle though mate until the final patch is released sometime in Spring '24 if every little incremental patch can break your work, or are you changing things the patches never touch?

Remains to be seen 100%, but based on last year, a lot of the issues came from the boosts in acceleration and sprint and I’m able to essentially turn them off right throughout the year. We’ll have to see how much the patches will break other things I guess but I’m not tooooo worried (at this stage anyway haha).

Great to hear, mate. That is going to be so good for the community. Even with just sliders, we've managed to get the game looking like a football match here and there. The lower sprint speed is such a massive change from FIFA 23 because now we can enjoy our players stopping when they should and feel like they have more weight to them. Makes for some brilliant interactions throughout the pitch. The CPU is so good with the ball at times, then you put enough pressure and anticipation - you just never know what happens. I can truly feel a difference between World Class and Legendary as well.

You can see this match several times where the CB jockey had a chance of showing but never did, in fact the CBs react so well and get back to cover spaces where needed. I even try to burst through the lines several times, and it's just not that easy. DAA is here and there, but not to the same levels as previous iterations.

What are these lower sprint values Matt? I'd like to try them. More weight would be a huge help...

Have you managed to get any crosses? Apparently a lot of folks said they had crosses in earlier build. But the current build is back to old AI that refuses to cross.

How is it some people are still experiencing the game as fine where as me and some others I've seen positing on twitter have their games broken since the update?

Its strange. The first couple of days I saw the CPU cross quite a bit but recently it went back to refusing to cross. Almost every CPU goal i concede is the same: pass inside the box turn shoot.

Same here I hope they adjust it back to the cpu crosses more and shoot from distance.

Different expectations maybe or different perspective on football videogames. Some don't care if the cpu will cross the ball or not. Some of us can't stand all these shortcomings.
Anyway, if the game suddenly becomes a football game by patches or mods I'll give it a go again. For now if someone plays on PC and owns FIFA 16 I can't really see a point playing FC24. You just install 22/23 season with all the goodies and you have a football game which is 1000x times better than FC24. Even the graphics are better in FIFA 16. Ofc there is also FL2023 if anyone wants a more frustrating experience tactically.
Also after yesterday's decision to remove all FIFA games from stores I have a feeling that copies of FIFA 16 might easily reach prices around £500 the next couple of years.

What's the fast speed like, I haven't been tempted to try it myself but I bet it's ridiculous based on how fast the game can be even on slow.
It's actually pretty nice, because you can still control the flow of the game by decreasing sprint speed, acceleration, and pass speed.
But the CPU plays differently, or at least this is my perception.
