Milan are set to part company with goalkeeper Christian Abbiati this summer, but despite promising offers, his intentions are to leave Italy.
“I think the time has come to spread his wings and fly,” said Abbiati’s agent Vincenzo Morabito. “Two years ago he was Italy’s third choice goalkeeper, but with Dida playing so well he hasn’t got the room to shine.”
The Brazilian’s performances over the last two years have pushed him on to the bench and reduced him to the odd Coppa Italia appearance.
There has been talk of offers from Palermo, Fiorentina, Roma and Lazio, but it seems that Abbiati would prefer to move abroad.
“We’ll have to wait and see what Milan’s position is on the matter and there should be a meeting after the Champions’ League Final,” continued the representative.
“Now Abbiati is a bit like Alberto Gilardino on the transfer stage, as everyone wants him in their squad. Palermo and Roma are potential moves, but we know it’s difficult for a goalkeeper to sustain the pressure in the Capital. The Sicilians are a growing club and Christian would appreciate that destination.”
However, the call of La Liga and the Premiership is stronger than a mid-table Serie A side and could tempt Abbiati into an overseas switch.
“Two years ago we rejected a move to Arsenal, but we wouldn’t make the same mistake again,” added Morabito. “Leaving Italy is fine, as long as it is for a prestigious cub. Villarreal and Arsenal are still interested and they would be great moves for Christian.”
