The TV Thread

Guys I really need some help.

I am looking to buy a 1080p LCD. I have a budget of £800, mainly be used for gaming and watching Sky, I don't have sky HD.

I have been look around for a couple of weeks and am throughly and utterly confused, there seems to be so much choice but I do not understand most of the technical gubbins.

Any help/advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Try this site Kamy100, I get a lot of info off here, have a check through the back pages of this thread too, we have covered most of best screens. Unfortunately because the market is moving so fast it's like buying a PC, you know in another few months there will be ea better one on the way. We can advise you on the pro and cons of anyone you chose... Are you mainly watching TV or mostly movies or are you mainly going to be playing games.

have you ruled out plasma? As Ash will tell you the Plasma has a lot going for it, and the old screen burn you used to get with old Plasmas has all but gone, they don't have the response problems of LCD for fast sports or games, but they do have their faults just like the LCD's have theirs... Let us know your screen size Kamy100......

Personally from my experience with Plasma's and LCD's I would chose Plasma any day of the week. My LG 50" HD Plasma has brilliant picture quality and a decent Contrast Ratio compared to the Sharp 42" LCD HD tv that the missus got... lots of ghosting and not the greatest picture quality.. oh and the contrast ratio is shite... it has problems showing some Black colours. Likewise my mate had a Tosh 42" LCD and that was pretty rubbish too.

My parents have got a 42" LG HD Plasma and that produces a good picture too and handles movement pretty well.

Hmmmm thanks guys that gives me food for thought as I had not even considered Plasmas. Thanks for the link to the AV FORUMS site I will have a look on there.

Basically I will be using the TV more for gaming then for anything else. I have measured up the room and a 37inch or 40inch would fit very well. I have had a look at some Sharp and Sony models but tbh got confused by the technical jargon.

Someone sent me the link, why is this TV so cheap:

They go over that same screen here... Contrast ratio is very poor and only 2 HDMI sockets, don't know too much about the screen never seen one... Their speakers used to be good, I had a pair an ex girlfriend hurled from a 2nd story window and they still worked fine...

Go plasma defo!

There are some 1080p plasmas, but a bit pricey, the Panasonic 42PZ70 springs to mind.

If you want to spend £800, then look at the Panasonic 42PX70 or PX700. Or the Pioneer models, but they are pricey but blooody amazing, their black levels are the best I've ever seen!

Contrast ratio means nothing IMHO.

Why? Well they are obviously over-rated. And many people confuse dynamic contrast ratio with normal contrast ratio.

Do you really think one TV can have 20,000:1 and the other 600:1?
Or Sony touting a tv with 1,000,000:1 yeah, thats a million to one contrast ratio on their OLED TVs.

EDIT: I would ONLY use contrast ratio to compare between the same brand e.g. Panasonic PX70 and PZ70, or Toshiab X or Z series if you get my drift.

Contrast Ratio does matter... if there is a lot of contrasting colours on the screen and your set has a shit Ratio (like the missus's 42" Sharp LCD one does) you wont see the colours properley... infact it will look shit!

Oh, it DOES matter, but not worth looking at the figures on paper to compare between two models of different makes.

I've got my eye on this LG now, it accepts 1080p inputs and has 24fps.

Great price, up to date specs and I get a free 3 year guarantee.

I read a review at AV forums and the guy is very happy with it.

OK, looking for a HD Ready Digital LCD/DVD Combi TV, Argos have a couple of them 19inch, a Bush and a Wharfdale; tis for a kitchen, and for my folks, so not needing huge specs, are they worth it, or best getting a 19-22inch LCD HD Digital and getting a cheap DVD player for it to sit on? Just thinking of ease of us for my parents. Cheers.

I'll be with you in a bit, just a bit busy today.

Can you give me your budget as well, and what your uses will be for it, and what more than others? Like DVD viewing, or primarily gaming, or SD TV?

Have a big fire at a clients to deal with so it's been all hands on at the moment Jay666, will have to check that model out but I know the to Samys I've seen playing HD ps3 and 360 stuff look very good...

Thinking about getting this:

What's your opinion on this? Good? Shit? Decent?

Had some bad feedback on Aldi stuff and found a lot of stuff on service! My local Aldis don't have it it but I'd always go for a good brand product, even knowing your paying for the name, they are going to be be around in a few years time and they generally give better after sales service... There are a quite a few screen manufacturers out there but the further down the line you get the poorer the quality of screen they have. The manufacturers will cherry pick and manufacture the best screens for their products..;)

Upto £500 and only for my PS3 and 360.

Jay666 Can't find much on Teco, I must admit. Apart from getting it in a silver or black frame, I can't find too much on this screen either. As I stated previous, I would always go for a good brand name with electrical for the reasons Ive given. You will struggle to get full HD at that price bracket and find a lot of screens will scrimp on HDMI sockets with just one in many cases.. I'll keep looking and give you my top three choices... How soon are you buying as things are going give it till after Crimbo and the spec you can get for the same money will be better, but no new screen for Crimbo gaming...
