The Retro-PES Corner

Hi fellow Nostalgic gamers!

I created my own YouTube channel with PES games. I love the old games with that nostalgic feeling. PES 5 is my all time favorite!
Would you check it out? That would be nice! You only have to follow when you really love it. I post shorts/video's and all kind of other PES games from way back!

PES5 and WE9 LE are the best old gen PES versions by far, but unfortunately they are both lacking in AI upgrade and AI is just too weak to play against experienced player who is playing the game for 15+ years.
For this case there is Wining Eleven 9 International
It's like pes6 only on pes5 engine. The most balanced football. And in defense you will not be allowed to score just like that, but you will also get responses in attack. This is not a one-sided game. For my twenty years of experience, it is still interesting to play. I can also lose 1 4, and 0 3. So not everything is so sad, but it is WE9.
I specifically checked all three versions, recorded statistics, and the most equal games and aggressive AI were in the WE9i version. I agree with you here PES 5 and WE9LE are very weak in attack.

PES 5 has such nice close control dribbling animations (the strafe movement as the ball is rolling which isn’t in PES 6) and ball physics for ground and dinked passes, compared to PES 6 which does feel more of a reversion. You also notice a strong foot plant when the player takes a first touch. PES 4 actually feels very fluid which in hindsight makes it feel the most PS3-like, almost as if there’s 360 turning, but is slightly too fast and the shooting is awkward. 5>4>6
Yeah, I've always found Pes 5/WE 9 games unparalleled as a "base", at least among PS2 ones. Not only what you said about dribbling, that I 100% agree, but defenders used more often more tackles/were stronger (they definitely nerfed them to the ground from WE 10 onwards) and the abundance of fouls, while maybe annoying sometimes, provides that when you scored with some nice prolonged dribbling it felt really rewarding. I also find keepers better as well (except from the known bug in which sometimes they remain immobile from middle distance, one vs one shooting, the keepers post rework from, again, WE 10 onwards felt more "free" but also more beatable to me, although I think they improved them in later PS2 chapters like 08 etc)

Irony wanted that it's also the chapter with the worse AI in possession by very, very far.. man, what I'd pay to have someone implement on it some of the better Cpu of the other PS2 Pes. Would probably be among my biggest football gaming dreams.

I saw a few comments about we9i's attacking AI being better than PES5, so I immediately tried it. Unfortunately, I didn't notice much. What differences can you detect?

Hey mate! Your comment about the PES 5 AI Possession reminded me of this thread by @elaf!

I haven't tested it yet, but still looks like a useful tool to improve the PES 5 AI! :TU:(there are many different versions inside, but I think the latest one is the recommended one!

More meaningful attacking actions. More aggressive. Fast. Interaction between players, more frequent passes forward, ball advancement. Combinations. Draws. When in PES 5 it's just a throw forward. Well, again, it's possible that all players simply have different perceptions. There have been so many cases when people say opposite things about one game. Everything is strictly individual. If in PES5 and WE9LE the computer created 1-2 chances in the same amount of time, this is already good, but there were 0 shots according to statistics. Then in WE9 it could be 7 shots and 5 on target. At the end of matches, the AI often put pressure on me and snatched a draw. I don't argue that in PES6 the attack is even more aggressive, but in my opinion it is unnatural. Cheating. Due to the simplification of physics, this turned out to be a more efficient function. Therefore, it seems that the attack is better there. But this is due to sharp animations when the ball is glued to the leg and again simplified physics, and the same robotic effect.
In the fifth iteration, the football process itself is more simulated, and the attacks adhere to the physical engine that is available. And accordingly, all these actions are more difficult to work out as in life. Not everyone can play like Real, Barcelona, Liverpool, etc. The fifth part reflects the football of average teams. Where physics comes to the fore. Fight. And since many play 10-15 minute matches, this is not enough to display the full attack potential in the game. Therefore, a continuous game without moments. That is, in fact, if we simulate football, then we are not even allowed to play these 90 minutes, that is, a maximum of 30. Again, even this is one to three, does not give a complete picture. And if we use the utility to change the physics of the ball pes6 from Kingsley in normal mode, then we will get from pes6..... pes5. Immediately the aggressive AI begins to lose its abilities. And more takes a measured pace, because it returns to the simulation, so Seabass knew perfectly well what he was doing when he cut the physical model, of course, this is bright in the attack but unnatural in the simulation. And the selections have disappeared, in fact, they do not exist. Just two lumberjacks crash into each other without excellent tenacity in 5 pes.
But nevertheless, for myself, I identified this golden mean as WE9. Where can I finish a match with a score of 5 3, 4 2, 0 2, 1 3, etc. That is, I feel that resistance from the attack.
If you reread the entire thread of this topic, you can see the opposite views and opinions hahaha. That's what's so great about the PS2 era.

It's fun to read how you can see the differences in PES en WE. I just only go for the PES version.

I Liked PES 4 also a lot... That was the first game I played after I didn't like FIFA as much any more.

Are you guys playing We9Le with its vanilla option file and speed? Because i found that change its option file with Pes5 one (to translate players games) nerf a lot a.i on both dedense and attack side.
I restart play the game with its option file and i find that CPU is still very limited in attack patterns, but It is more clical, keep better possesion and buil up,shoot more etc...
On defense side it is a lot stronger than Pes5 one.
But if i put Pes5 option file on we9le then a.i become weaker even than Pes5 one

I did the same before, simply putting the original pes5 option file into WE9LE, then the latter becomes very generic, nothing like the praises I have seen in this thread for this game.

Just cannot stand the Korean language menu, player names etc and the commentary, so didn't try this wonder very much~~

After all the years of playing PES6, finally figure out its predecessor is much better in many aspects~~

Though my few complains for the great PES5 including:

the attacking teams always bend or cross the ball aimlessly so the ball goes out behind the line without creating tangible threats.

And the throw from PC always goes to the opposite team.

I can clearly feel that We9japan's defensive presence is dominant. I hope technology one day creates something that will improve the attacking AI of PES5, We9j, or We9i. If that happens, there'll be no need to play any other games.

I found a english iso on this site, with english menu but korean players names. I started translate manually each name 😅 but it deserves It. We9le with Pes5 option file it is worse than pes5

I still find PES 5 the most balanced PES of the PS2 era, possibly of any era. What it lacks in attacking AI at times, it makes up for tactically, in physicality, player individuality and ball physics. I play Master League with lower-rated players for the added challenge.

I've also played a lot of WE9LE. It's a decent PES 5 variant but there is something not quite right about it. The shooting system is off compared to PES 5 and there is really very little different in attacking AI.

PES 2008 (PS2) has great attacking AI but at the expense of just about everything else. It doesn't stand up to prolonged play, in my opinion, but is fun for a one-off tournament or two.

@KayNiew Subscribed. Good luck with the channel. 👍

I agree with this 100%, i like PES 5 the most from the whole PS2 era.
But after replaying it so much i just find PES 2008 more fresh nowadays.

But i will propably comeback to PES 3 or PES 5 after i will complete the current ML in PES 2008 :)

PES 4 is a interesting title, feels like it has a everything good from PES 3 and PES5, if it was a little less ping poingy though.

I had my favourite ML save in that title :) (WE8LE version)

Here is a cheeky attempt by an AI, it might seem like that shot was travelling for a long time, but its not an easy feat for japanese goalkeepers that lack height :b

As a fan for the j league myself I can see that long range shot goals are usual in the j league, I love the j league games because of the huge details in everything, had jlwe 2008 month ago , I used to play 2009 for like 12 years, I can say that 2008 had the most unpredictable ai I can almost feel I'm playing against another human ..also each match feel like a stand alone game not a repeated dull scripted match like the modern pes games (2014 to 2021), playing it on ps3hen but it usually crashes because there's no config files for the j league games , so I stick with 2009 because it doesn't crash and it's the second best j league game in my opinion.. wanted to play 2010 but it also crash in the opening title for ps3hen.

As a user of a PS3 with HEN, some weird thing is going on with that game. So, i tried the one around that is in Spanish language and do what you described. Same for the english version. Then i did a quick search and found a Argentinian Patch (Replaced the J League 1 & 2 with Argentina Leagues) that is built with JL2010CC as a base. At least the SLPM matched the one that is translated to Spanish/English. (SLPM-55262). So i suppose it is the same base game.

The one patched (Argentina) worked but none of the others 2 (default) worked. Makes no sense. lol

Without the J League kinda kills the vibe of it though. The other leagues are the usual ones.

Yep .. , it's weird and sad .. sometimes I felt that my own ps3 is haunted or something 😂 , but yeah he was there for me for years .. , thanks for your reply I knew I wasn't alone in this 😂.. still now trying to activate the j league dlc for we2012 by finding the rap files I'm sure this will be the best experience I'll have for the j league(because in my opinion we2012 "with the j league dlc installed for sure" is the best game on ps3 not 2013 I'm sorry ) , the gameplay is FUN and has soul in it and is highly underrated and ignored
.this is the only experience I didn't play till today, as you said it'll be pointless without j league because the company put their real potential in the j league .. I used to play 2010jlwe when I was a teenager , had a lot of fun playing with my family members and friends , hope I can play it again .

Has anyone else had trouble with PES 2013 replays? They're playing at 30fps, while everything else plays at 60fps. I disabled and enabled VSYNC, both in game's settings and in NVIDIA Control Panel. Nothing helped.

That's the artificial limitation of PES 11, 12 & 13 + maybe some more. It's not just replays, it's also free kicks, corner kicks & cutscenes. It's indeed very annoying, idk why they did this.

Had a good bit of fun with PES 5 and WE9LE last night. I’ve been running the gauntlet from these titles through eFootball 2026 and all the FIFAs in between.

I really enjoy the shooting. It feels quite close to manual shooting. The assisted passing feels a bit like cheating - sometimes it makes brilliant passes I could never do with manual passing, other times it makes very dumb passes (yes I know there is manual passing but it’s very awkward).

What I like most is the simplicity. “It’s a simple game” both literally and figuratively. Pass to the open guy and try to get off a good shot. It’s very easy to zone into the fundamentals in this game. In the newer ones, it gets so complicated.
