For this case there is Wining Eleven 9 InternationalPES5 and WE9 LE are the best old gen PES versions by far, but unfortunately they are both lacking in AI upgrade and AI is just too weak to play against experienced player who is playing the game for 15+ years.
Yeah, I've always found Pes 5/WE 9 games unparalleled as a "base", at least among PS2 ones. Not only what you said about dribbling, that I 100% agree, but defenders used more often more tackles/were stronger (they definitely nerfed them to the ground from WE 10 onwards) and the abundance of fouls, while maybe annoying sometimes, provides that when you scored with some nice prolonged dribbling it felt really rewarding. I also find keepers better as well (except from the known bug in which sometimes they remain immobile from middle distance, one vs one shooting, the keepers post rework from, again, WE 10 onwards felt more "free" but also more beatable to me, although I think they improved them in later PS2 chapters like 08 etc)PES 5 has such nice close control dribbling animations (the strafe movement as the ball is rolling which isn’t in PES 6) and ball physics for ground and dinked passes, compared to PES 6 which does feel more of a reversion. You also notice a strong foot plant when the player takes a first touch. PES 4 actually feels very fluid which in hindsight makes it feel the most PS3-like, almost as if there’s 360 turning, but is slightly too fast and the shooting is awkward. 5>4>6
I saw a few comments about we9i's attacking AI being better than PES5, so I immediately tried it. Unfortunately, I didn't notice much. What differences can you detect? For this case there is Wining Eleven 9 International
It's like pes6 only on pes5 engine. The most balanced football. And in defense you will not be allowed to score just like that, but you will also get responses in attack. This is not a one-sided game. For my twenty years of experience, it is still interesting to play. I can also lose 1 4, and 0 3. So not everything is so sad, but it is WE9.
I specifically checked all three versions, recorded statistics, and the most equal games and aggressive AI were in the WE9i version. I agree with you here PES 5 and WE9LE are very weak in attack.
Hey man! Your comment about the PES 5 AI Possession reminded me of this thread by @elaf!Yeah, I've always found Pes 5/WE 9 games unparalleled as a "base", at least among PS2 ones. Irony wanted that it's also the chapter with the worse AI in possession by very, very far.. man, what I'd pay to have someone implement on it some of the better Cpu of the other PS2 Pes. Would probably be among my biggest football gaming dreams.
