The Retro-PES Corner

PES 3 is generally the toughest test of all in the series of games, and free kicks are very hard to score from, short or long, unless you have splashed out 1000 plus salary points on a Baggio, Nedved or Adriano.

On the other hand, when a lesser player like Arellano does a sideways volley scissor kick into the onion bag from fifteen yards when all you wanted was a simple header, then its......

Was I playing a different game?
Could have put money on it being PES3.
Does anyone have a no cd crack for it as I can't find the disk anywhere :(

Great to see such a vibrant thread about PES 6 (and indeed earlier games). I have done many Master Leagues over the years on PES 6 with many different clubs. However they all tended to be the same ie I'd get some money go out and buy Rooney, C. Ronaldo, Adriano and co and dominate for a few seasons before I got bored. However back in the summer of 2007 I came up with an idea to make it a bit more interesting. Basically I picked Wigan Athletic and enforced a salary cap of 10,000 points. It was one of the most enjoyable MLs I have ever done. Rather than simply going out every End of season window and buying the best rated players I had to be clever about who I bought and and ensuring to stay within the cap - a bit like how a real life small Premier league club would operate.

Has anyone else done something similar?

@liam7988 , I do something very like your salary cap system in PES 6, in my favourite edition,
PES 3. I have limited my transfers to buying players with salaries of under 800 points a season.
With the likes of Ronaldo(the true original), Zidane, Figo and Rivaldo commanding bonkers salaries of 1500 points, it has worked a treat as I get a very good net total of ML points for every league win in Division 1.

And let's be honest, even at the top difficulty level, it is hardly a challenge to win with players who have red 90s range numbers across their stats. I mean scoring goals with Ronaldo, Vieri or Adriano is like a conversion in rugby or something.

Well maybe you are just a total wizard with the control pad, as in PES 3 the old shoot button is like a hair trigger, a millisecond too long, and it is in row Z.

Well I have found one so I'm going to test it. It could be my old mind playing tricks on me :D

First go, Shevchenko, 5 yards outside the box, straight in :APPLAUD:
I agree about longer free kicks though, they were tough.

@wildwind: Well, can't say you're not consistent! Even though your season 2 is so similar to the first-half of last year's I see that you're conceding less goals, and that's good news. At the moment there's no best defense in the league than yours, which is really impressive given you're just on season 2. How're you pulling it off so brilliantly?

@mattmid: Man, again so close to promotion...technically you were 45 min. away from it! Still, you're evolving bit by bit as your record of points shows. In my save Nancy just got promoted with 23 points...
Regarding the fact that no one's retiring, it's surely frustrating but the more time those old men stay on the club, the more likely there'll be many players retiring at the same time in the future. So I wouldn't be surprised if next season you lose your Huylens and Minanda simultaneously...I say this because a similar thing is going to happen with me, given Iouga, Espimas, Ceciu, Zamenhof will all be 37 years old soon.
Also, just saw it, what a goal!!! Long live the King!

After a dreadful start to the season (spoilers) it's up to one man to ignite the side and start to turn things around.

The celebration at the end says it all. :KING:

@mattmid , What a guy, does Minanda ever score a goal where he does not appear to be relaxed on the sofa ? :TU:

ML United - Season 4 - End of season update

Last update I told how I wanted to carry over the momentum from the first half of the season, which had been close to brilliant, over to the last half of Season 4 in order to get us promoted. Ever since the beginning of the save we've had problems with consistency, or better yet a lack of ability to deal with the pressure of fighting for just the two top spots in a nightmare of a league where every team is perfectly able to steal points from another. There aren't many harder challenges than the 8-team D2 in retro-PES, even more so when you're playing Generations Mode.

But this wasn't time for caution. I was absolutely consumed with rage, all I wanted was to win 5-0 against every single team we met. I was tired of spending years building up expectation and then at the very last minute throw it all away for somebody else to get promoted.
After the winter break...4 wins in a row! We're close, it's happening. With 3 matches to go, we face Nancy at home who were 2nd, already 7 points behind us. If ML United wins this match, they're champions...as for promotion, we could clinch it even with a loss providing both Strasbourg and Rangers failed to win their matches.
We lost it 1-2, but as the referee blows the whistle, my players are celebrating like maniacs! Turns out Rangers did us a favor and drew their match against Strasbourg, so we're officially in D1 for the next season!

Meanwhile, we won the first leg of the D2 Cup semifinals with a 1-2 win against Rosenborg in their own stadium. I thought I had it in the bag, and more so when I was winning 1-0 at halftime in the second leg. Overly confident, I subbed off important players such as Ordaz and Van den Berg to keep them somewhat fresh for the next league match (where we could win the league after winning promotion) for Castolo and Ettori, and I had the deserved punishment for that: Rosenborg got a corner and a header to make it 1-1. Last five minutes, after dozens of turnovers by Castolo one of those got them a dangerous counter-attack, 1-2...extra-time!
Just a few minutes after the beginning of the second half of ET, Rosenborg scores again and we're now obliged to score twice to advance to the final, but in the end we could do nothing else and we lost the chance of repeating our Season 3 D2 Cup win.

Fixture 13 was the day we could win our first league trophy. At home vs Heracles, after an unexpectedly tough game - remember Horrible Heracles? They weren't so horrible this time around...- we managed to win 1-0. Just before the 90th minute, Minanda is subbed in and just like it happened in our D2 cup win I gave him the captaincy for him to lift the trophy.

GjCuBV9.jpg

So I got promoted, got the silverware...but I still had one fixture left in the season.
Vs. Strasbourg, away from home, would be the last ever match played by Minanda for ML United. How to make it memorable?

This might do it: check out below our limited edition ML United home kit, worn by every player we fielded. In the front, a message: "Obrigado Minanda", which in Portuguese means "Thank you Minanda", on every player's shirt including Minanda's (he too felt compelled to thank himself for what he himself did for football all these years).
On the back of the shirt, "Minanda" instead of the player's name. First and last time we ever put 11 Minandas on the pitch.

kI3yyyQ.jpg

Speaking of the match itself, Strasbourg had to win it to clinch promotion, if Nancy won and they drew or lost it was game over for them and Nancy would be promoted instead. I decided to field the usual starting eleven but this time Minanda had to play instead of Fouque.
Strangely, the match had a calm vibe to it - Minanda's influence, I'm sure - so nothing of relevant happened besides a Gutierrez goal to win it, 0-1. 10 minutes before the end of the match - because Minanda's the number 10 - I subbed Minanda off for his definite farewell.

@miguelfcp You can add a new challenge in "Part IV: Other Challenges"

CPU Co-op Challenge :

You play the game in cooperation with one CPU player. You can take care of strategies, substitutions and lineup. You can buy every player you want, since this is a very hard challenge. This challenge is only available on PES 3/4/5/6.

This my favorite challenge in all old PES, because i would find them too easy without it (even with the Minanda & co :P)

Ooo I like that one!
Saying that, the CPU sometimes does the stupidest of things. Even on Top Player too.
How about ML playing as just one player?

I think the challenge with only just one player is already there.
The co-op CPU stupidity depends on the game, in PES 6 it is very stupid, but in PES 5/3, it is fine. (i didn't test in PES 4)

I haven't tried it again since the CPU on my team dribbled back to goal then along the goal line...

@miguelfcp What a season! Congratulations. Loved the Minanda tribute:APPLAUD: :SAL::KING::WORSHIP: 11 wins is some season. Hopefully you can add some good new talent to replace Minanda ready for Div 1. I'm almost dreading Div 1 after seeing some of the players signed recently from the free agents I added when I made this file  Then again, the time I get there they'll all be retired.

I played the first four games of the new season last night, ending with the one where Minanda scored that goal. I don't know if there was some kind of hangover from last season or whether it was just me but the first three games were awful, passes were going astray, Ivarov made two mistakes for goals, one a back header by me in relative safety and he managed to drop it and a striker got there to tap it in! He's turned into Lothar all of a sudden after being so assured last season. Every shot I had was either over or produced a great save, I just couldn't do a thing, this after going 2-0 down in the opening game, coming back only to concede again a minute later and lose. Upshot of it if you want to know
Record 1-0-3 5-9! after 4 games!

@mattmid So close again. According to the trend of Domzale's progress, you will be at least 2nd next season. You are best attack in Season 3 and best defense in Season 4. If you can find the balance in between (we already know it is very hard in this Generations Mode), Domzale will definitly be promoted in Season 5.
Inspired by your leaflets, we post many posters around our training ground. "We are Hiring! Our academy is planning to expand this summer and will hire many COACHES with good pay" Hope it works!!!

@miguelfcp How can ML United clinch promotion with 2 games spare in a 14 games league? Your point/game is 2.35 close to record breaking ManCity 2.6. Amazing achievement. Also, I don't know how many seasons required for our club to score 33 goals!!!
How lovely your club are, wearing "Obrigado Minanda" kit for the legend's final game. Any testimonial like Pirlo? (BTW Rui Costa (Minanda's undercover) play in this match)

We know very well quality of our sqard now. We cannot adapt Pep's style of football yet. Thus, our team talk is always "Don't loss it", especially away. We play very tight 3 CB with stein and dodo in front. Try to force our opponant to go wide and minimize their attack in the middle. Most goals conceded so far are from header by a cross, especially when Libermann rested. We already received hugh amount of criticism in social media, but this is our only way to be competitive and stay in this harsh and tight league.

@wildwind I really hope so but see above for the awful start I made! Still, plenty of time yet and I think (hope!) in my fourth game which was a 3-0 win I might have found a compromise formation that just might work, either that or it was just a good game! It's a 5-3-2 with Liberrman, Jaric and (anyone from Valeny/Stremer/Ceciu, usually Valeny) Stein and Ruskin at WB's with Dodo and Minanda in front. Fouque at AM with Ordaz/Hamsun up front. Having it 5-3-2 instead of 3-5-2 seemed to give me more security out wide, especially down Ruskin's side and with left footed Jaric at the left of the three centre backs as support for him. When Minanda tires (about 60 minutes) I brought on Giersen at RWB and moved Stein in to partner Dodo. If we are trailing I will bring in Macco instead.

Now hopefully that wasn't just one of those games where it all clicked and won't next time. I seemed solid again. I had switched to a 4-1-3-2 for the first three games and I don't think that helped at all. I thought it might be a way of getting Fouque in between Macco and Ruskin in the three but it just didn't work at all.

Hope you get some early retirements! Still no sign of any yet after 4 games in season 5!

@mattmid Liberrman, Jaric and (anyone from Valeny/Stremer/Ceciu, usually Valeny). That's what I found best for our solid defensive. Hope you find your rhythm after this change.

I found my Giersen didn't grow much, only +1 in 4 his abilities only. I played him a lot and sometimes play as CM when Dodo need rests. He is only 23, but look like 33, stop to improve. How is your Gierson?

Hope you too with a chance of newblood soon.

@wildwind He's gone up slowly (+4 in abilities now in fourth season) but was only a slow improver. His technique is really good but his passing is awful most of the time for me. He's strong at RB but I find him frustrasting as a WB because his forward play is poor, as is Stein's too. Macco can play there but then you have the weaker defence. Macco's really improved (+9) and does well even though he's not a regular but plays almost every game even if it's just as a sub.

@fmicablues7: From what I can understand that sounds like the Total Manager Mode, isn't it? While the CPU plays the matches, you're responsible for the off-the-pitch decisions.

@mattmid: (Spoilers of matt's ML!!!) Not a good start for you but I'm confident you'll turn things around, your team needs an injection of morale though. I filled the walls of our locker room with posters of 2005 Megan Fox and 2003 Lindsay Lohan and look where it got us...

@wildwind: Thanks mate, did you see our winning percentage? 78%, what a season! I catched Pirlo's testimonial match on TV and as soon as Rui Costa appeared, immediately I thought of Minanda. You look at the hair, even the skin tone and the style of play...it's Minanda.

After the end of Season 4, I got a chance to bring in our second newcomer after getting Jackson the CB a few years ago, because of Minanda's retirement.
I had a few interesting players on my shortlist, including a few regens like 17-year old Pauleta and Liliam Thuram, alongside Abdel Salam the newgen striker and a DMF who I was really keen on getting, can't remember his name but he was a defensive-minded player with a balanced statsheet overall and good mental stats - the latter is a must-have for me. As usual, I will not get players with low condition levels and will prefer those with great mental stats (mentality and/or teamwork) over those who haven't.
But all of these players I mentioned couldn't come close to my favourite of the newcomers list. I had stumbled upon this guy back in my PES2009 test-save, failed to get him though I tried really hard, and he's one of the most interesting players I'll ever manage in any PES.

His name's Fredriksson, a Goalkeeper. He's very tall (1,94m) and already a better GK than Ivarov, though he'll just be 18 years old soon. His GK statsheet his impressive alone, with 78 defense, 81 balance, 80 response and 85 goalkeeper ability combined with a 6 condition stat; however the following stats blew my mind and turned his accquisition into a no-brainer: I had to get him. His mentality stat is...96!!! He's like the Maldini of goalkeepers, a machine disguised as human. I'm not done yet, there's more: he's a Free Kick AND Penalty Kick specialist, with 78 FK accuracy, 80 swerve and a PK taker star! To sum it up, Fredriksson is a mix between Maldini, a young keeper with lots of potential and Rogerio Ceni. Could I be happier right now? Love these quirky kind of players.

Moreover, I managed to renew every single one of the contracts (40.000 PES points available certainly help a lot, given we're spending not more than 8000 PES currently) but Gutierrez's, which I was still not able to renew though I already advanced past three weeks of negotiation. He had a 400 PES deal that expired in Season 4, now he asked for 800 PES minimum and just rejected a 1000 PES offer...I'm offering 1400 now, it's madness though he's by far our best player with a statsheet filled with +80 stats. What if I'm not able to renew his contract, does it mean it's game over? Or would I then be able to get another newcomer? Never was in this situation when playing Generations Mode, but I guess I should be expecting more of these problems as the quality of our roster increases...

Absolutely not. Have you ever played co-op with a friend on PES ? It is the same but the CPU is the friend.

Oh, I see I misunderstood what you said. So what happens when you use that configuration you shown in your image, what does the CPU do and what does the human?

@miguelfcp I'm glad the poster's worked. I'll try some Salma Hayek one's. If it doesn't motivate the players it'll at least motivate me.

That's a good question about not being able to renew a contract, I had wondered about that. I think it would be harsh to be game over but I think an idea would be that you sign another newcomer BUT you must offer him the final wage offer that was turned down by your current player. Whether he's worth it or not and the same contract length. We can consider it a punishment for not getting the job done. I made the opposite mistake last pre season, I got so engrossed in working on a formation that when I'd done it I came out of that screen and continued without remembering that I hadn't done the contracts yet and of course they all signed for what they had wanted! Only one had the honesty to take less off his own back.

That sounds like just the keeper I want. Reminds me of that hmm, was it Paraguayan keeper, Chilavert or something like that, that used to take free kicks.

In big news at week 6 .............

Espimas announces his retirement!

42 games, 2 assists, 0 goals.

I was anxious clicking it to find out who it was, I'm really hoping Minanda can do another season. Will there be more I wonder? Bit of a shame it's him first, he's fading but far from the worst of the older players. Still, the rebuild can get started at last.

Did Minanda actually come off the pitch in that pose?

The turn around is starting but I'm now in a position where I can't really afford to lose more than 1 or2 more games. The margin for error is very small now. I've just been hit by a blow as well. Hamsun got hacked down and he's out for 8 weeks! Forunately some of that will be taken up with the winter break so that's a bit of a relief. I really don't have a replacement for his role. Huylens is well over the hill and Castolo won't be pulling on a shirt in a league match ever again in this save.

Oh, I see I misunderstood what you said. So what happens when you use that configuration you shown in your image, what does the CPU do and what does the human?

Basically, the cpu is controlling one player at a time, like the human does, but he can change player when not in control of the ball, exactly the same for the human.

@fmicablues7 If I remember right can you press a button to call for a pass from the cpu? I know that's in Become a Legend later on but I have a vague recollection you could first do that when playing like that.

Domzale Winter Break Update.

The biggest news off the pitch was Espimas announcing his retirement after Match 6. It caused a bit of a stir in the dressing room causing a couple of players to look up the word to see what it meant. Zamenhof was heard to chuckle over in the corner.

The season began against Heracles with an awful first half performance that found us 2-0 down at the break. We huffed and puffed and suddenly found ourselves back in the game at 2-2 through sheer hard work rather than guile. Then we managed to concede straight from the kick off to undo all the hard work. A goal that was proven to be the difference in the end as Heracles yet again put the boot in. The only bright spot was 2 goals for Hamsun to get his season up and running early on. Next up was possibly the worst performance from Domzale in their near 5 year history. Korona were 2-0 up at the break and added a third later on. It could and probably should have been 6. The defence was awful and they were the best part of the team on the day. After a horrible start you can imagine how pleased I was to see it was St Polten next. The inevitable happend and three goals were shipped again, this time with 1 back (Hamsun again) but we were never in it.

Something had to change and it was the formation that did. The 4-1-3-2 I'd been playing was just not working despite doing ok with it in pre season. We were leaking goals and disjointed up the top of the pitch. 5-3-2 was the new way forward. Ivarov was warned about his poor form and asked if he really wanted the embarrassment of losing his place to Lothar. This seems to have done the trick with him returning to form in the next four games.

Lokeren was the first match after the change and with us well in control it was time for Minanda to step up with his sublime goal to get the season going. Ordaz added a brace for a fine 3-0 win. Suddenly the team looked as if they knew each other again.

This was followed up with a tight game against the always difficult Altach with a goal from that man Minanda winning the points. Next up was Vardar who were comfortably put away with another 3-0 win with goals from Fouque, Ordaz and Hamsun. The bad news though was that Hamsun was crudely cut down and will miss 8 weeks. The good news is that a cup game and the winter break mean he should be back for the last 5 games, missing only 3 league games. However he's a huge miss to this team and it's going to be hard work to get through it.

First game without him was against the tough Ried side, who were promoted back up at the first attempt last time. They took the lead in what was an even first half before a lovely move when Fouque cut back from out wide, fed Ruskin on the corner of the box who played it first time to Ordaz who hit a shot past the keeper to equalise. Both sides had chances to win it but it ended in a draw that both sides deserved.

halfway.jpg

After the dreadful start we'd managed to get our goal difference back positive from the -6 it was at one point and get ourselves back in the mix at least. The win over Lokeren proving a key one or they'd be out of sight. With four sides above us who have already been in Div 1 it's not going to be an easy task but at least it's one we are in with a chance of which didn't look the case in 8th place after three games. The next three games against the teams I got taken apart by are going to be huge one's.

Top Scorer's Hamsun, Ordaz 4, Minanda 2

Assists Jaric 2 (from LCB of the three!)

Top Rating Hamsun, Jaric, Stein, Fouque 6.3 Minanda at a career low 5.8 but has been sublime at times and is only playing an hour.

The plus point of this formation is that it really seems to suit Fouque who's showing the best form of his career to date and perhaps starting to show he's almost ready to take over from Minanda as the playmaker in the team.

The cup is over (again!) for another season. Losing 2-0 to Reid on aggregate, 1-0 both legs. A pretty good effort from the reserve team against a good side. Having intended to have a go at it this season, in the end there was no way I was going to play the full team after losing the first three league games.

@fmicablues7 If I remember right can you press a button to call for a pass from the cpu? I know that's in Become a Legend later on but I have a vague recollection you could first do that when playing like that.

Yeah, i remember also about that button, but it never worked for me on PES 6 though, i will try on PES 3.
