no point goint up in memory 6gb is plenty (unless you are going to use the laptop for encoding etc.)

don't forget if you are using the laptop to output to a large 50" ish TV then you need to make sure it can handle/ouput the resolution to support that

14.0" High Def (720p/1366x768) with WLED backlight

will that output full HD to external monitor i.e does the laptop have hdmi too?

It will output to a TV at 1080p, he won't be able to play many games at that resolution but the graphics card will output too it.
PC graphics cards can normally output to 2560x1600.

Yes it has HDMI and I will be sending it to a 50 inch tv so I should be good.
And I upped the resolution to (900p/1600x900)

Now debating whether to remove the optical drive from my MacBook and put a 90GB SSD in to run Windows 7 and OS X... Would it really be that much faster?

Games will load quicker with an SSD but once in the game there is no real benefit. I keep all my games on my HDD.

People who play BF3 have said that having it installed on SSD allows them to load into the map quicker and they can capture objectives before HDD players.

Definitely. I use an SSD myself, although its only 60gigs, it's enough to fit Windows 7, a few applications and Battlefield 3. Takes me about 11-15 secs to load into a new map. Very useful when you're going for a certain vehicle or just want to rush to the objective.

I've got an old acquaintance who does HD gaming videos on YouTube, I've heard the SSD is a must when you're recording while playing games (Fraps, etc.). Is that the case? :)

SSD is solid state drive. Like a hard drive but has no moving parts so makes no noise and is a lot faster as its flash memory, like in a USB drive.

Steam is just a digital game store.

couple of questions , what's SSD?

also what's steam?

both serious questions haha = )

Steam is the greatest thing to ever happen to gaming.
Allows you to store all your games in one place and get games cheap.

SSD is Solid State Drive, basically will quadrouble your boot speed, they are incredibly quick but are currently limited due to them not being big enough to do anything on apart from work as a boot drive.

SSD - something you should get further down the line. Install windows on it and watch your pc boot to desktop in 20 seconds. Prices are falling all the time.

Steam - a service for downloading games. Also has features similar to XBL such as friends list and achievements. Not always the cheapest but they do have some great sales and promotions. EA has a rival service called Origin.

No, Steam is free. You pay per game.

So the concensus in here is that I SHOULD get an SSD to boot from then? Windows 7 and OS X should fit on a 90GB drive shouldn't they?

I'm pretty sure Windows 7 install is fairly small. I've got it on a 64gb drive with loads of other programs and still got about 20gb left.

Anyway Dan, did you get your pc parts today?

reckon it'll be tomorrow mate

chatting to my pal at work and he's got a degree in computers...he's offered to help me put it together this saturday

so i can help, watch and learn....so guess i'm kind of cheating but will defo be hands on when putting it together
