The PC Building Thread

People may be interested in this if you run Steam I know dags uses something similar but good to see they are now going to implement it into Steam itself:

Prob been done due to the amount of people who now have ssd.

Such a basic option that should have been there from the start, but at least they've finally added it. Good for people who want the odd game on an SSD or if the Steam drive is getting full.

On a related note, I moved my Steam games from one HDD to another recently and it was fairly straightforward. I didn't have to use Steam Mover or anything. Not as complicated a process as some people make out.

Anyway, I don't actually use Steam a great deal. I only play a small number of games and most of those are not on Steam (PES, rFactor 2, Game Stock Car). For the most part I still prefer to buy boxed copies of games as they are often cheaper than Steam when buying from places like ShopTo and Amazon. My broadband speed is terrible so it's often less hassle to buy the game online and wait two or three days.

All I did Jamez was move my steam directory from one HDD to another and ran the executable from the new location and it worked fine.

Dags what monitor and glasses did you buy?
Am thinking about upgrading my monitor and going 3D.

Using the BenQ XL2420T monitor and Nvidia 3D Vision 2. Not cheap but works really well. The XL2420T is regarded as being the best 24" 3D monitor around by a lot of places.

Trine looks absolutely amazing in 3D. Games like BF3 and CS:GO looked great but I find it quite hard to use the aiming reticule and judge the distance properly with 3D.

That was the exact setup I was thinking of buying but would be a £350 upgrade.

Yep, it's not cheap. You can get the 3D Vision 1 kit for a little cheaper but they don't use Lightboost so the picture on your monitor would look dark.

The XL2420T supports Lightboost so might as make the most of it. Games do look VERY slightly darker to not wearing the glasses but it's hardly noticeable.

I'm looking for some advice and I've looked around in spurts, only for the costs of my dream PC to mount up and put me off the idea for another month.

I was initially looking to make a mini-ITX machine for portability reasons, but seeing how little power the mini-ITX PSUs are restricted to (and the external PSUs seem ropey), I'd settle for something a bit bigger.

The dream is to make something that will be able to play Battlefield 3 on the absolute maximum settings. I'm reading that this is only possible with an i7 and a very expensive graphics card, rather than an i5 and a £250-or-less graphics card. Does that sound about right?

All I've managed to decide on is a certain liquid cooling system (because the sound of fans on my current machine is doing my head in, I've replaced the thermal paste but even when the CPU's at a cool temperature the fan reaches 100% within 10 minutes of booting)...

You can just buy a new fan, mine is a dark rock and is completly silent even at 100%.

If you want to play BF3 everything on maximum at over 60FPS there is only a the 680GTX and the 690GTX capable of doing this and the 680 costs £400 and the 690 costs around £900. BF3 is the most demanding PC game out there but if you saw it running on PC compared to console you would be amazed.

I will look into getting this soon, I will just tell my Mrs whilst she is away this week that our monitor broke and I needed a new one.
The new one only cost £100 and will hide the 3D glasses in my box of crap so she will never know.

But still I am unsure if going 3D is worth £370

This may sound like a horrifically noobish question but is there any way to start a PC remotely? Wake on LAN?

I haven't got a clue about all this. Basically I'm incredibly lazy and it would be nice to fire up the PC from the sofa, something which I've grown used to doing with the consoles.

Isnt that a setting that would be in the BIOS if it was supported? Never actually used this before.

Haven't got a clue mate. Not something I've ever thought about before as my last PC was the traditional desk-based set up in the spare room.

Now many people have PC's in the living room under the TV, I wondered whether remote starting is a possibility.

I have to shut mine down lad. The amount of heat it generates in my spare room is unbelievable and id imagine it uses a fair bit of power even when doing nothing.

right lads, build is going to happen saturday : )

got my psu today so it's all systems go

can't wait to get it all setup

Not sure if this is the right thread but can anyone tell me why Fifa13 demo Origin won't load on PC? I have Fifa 12 working fine. Any Help Please.

latest managed to get it to boot up but for some reason cannot display a picture when the graphics card is plugged in

do you need to install the drivers first before it will recognise it?

the setup iv'e got should easily power the radeon 7850 shouldn't it?

If the graphics card is in you should plug your display into that and not the onboard one - (just in case you're not doing that). It'll work in low res til the drivers are there.

The GPU might need two plugs to supply the power as well, two block connectors. I forget what they're called though.
