The PC Building Thread

what the nvidia GTX560 dags mate.....i see somebody mentioned that card earlier in the thread

560ti is a decent card, yep. Make sure it's the ti version though. I think 2GB of VRAM is generally only needed for multi-monitor setups? Some games like Skyrim make some use of it but otherwise I think 1.5GB is plenty.

I'd just leave the BluRay drive and buy it next month or something. It's not essential to getting your PC up and running really.

It's really that bad bobby? I have to buy it from dell so my options are limited.

I don't know, I haven't a clue. The boys will be around soon and will let you know for sure.

But I guess laptops aren't the best way to go for gaming, but it may run PES/Fifa ok?

I'll say it's not, no. GTS is a very cut down version of the GTX cards. Seriously, save up a few quid more if you need to and get a proper card. It's worth it in the long run.

I had a GTX 460 and it was pretty nice for what it was. It wont max out Crysis or anything but it does a decent job and will play PES and FIFA.

I know your trying to save abit of money but do not sacrifice getting a decent graphics card.

The 7850 is an excellent card and a steal at £130.
It is more powerful than the 5870 I recommended quite a bit better than the 560ti, I would get one before aria sell out and discontinue the item.

will order it now, the 7850 that is : )

could you recommend a cheap psu, even if it saves me £20 would help

The 7850 runs at 860MHz stock core speed but nearly all cards are capable of running at 1050MHz just by maxing a slider in the driver software. If you want to investigate overlocking, most cards can get to 1200MHz, which matches the performance level of much more expensive cards.

That's why it's known as one of the best bang for buck cards right now and why there is a huge thread on it on the Overclockers UK forum.

I've got mine running at 1225MHz right now.

That would be a nice setup.

Good deal on the 7850, even though it is the 1gb version. You probably wouldn't need 2gb VRAM anyway.

ahhh you saying that now i think i need the 2gb instead - i'm just hooking up to my 55 lcd tv

psu bsmaff recommended is 730w , is there anything cheaper for £20?

Bloody hell, just buy a card! :D

Connecting to a TV, you won't go over 1080p anyway so you don't need 2GB.

haha mate i'm doing my own nut in

i'm currently about £15 over budget .....piddly i know but have £560 set aside...and still have to buy a blu ray drive but that can wait for a few weeks....will buy a £12 dvd drive from aria for the time being

I'll ask my own n00b question now then - I don't really understand "overclocking"? Could someone explain it a little and what the pros and cons of it are?

Its making your hardware run a bit faster than the stock speeds. Pro is obviously the faster speed, cons are higher temperatures, instability if not done right and possibly decreases the life of the hardware.

Oh I see, thanks mate. Think I'll probably leave it alone then as don't wanna ruin my MacBook Pro, and the increased heat wouldn't do a laptop much good I'm guessing!

Another thing to bear in mind if you do get a 7850 is the power draw is lower than most cards so you don't really need a 750w psu.

600-650w would be plenty. Sorry to complicate things!

could you suggest a replacement PSU please mate

some are dirt cheap i.e £35.....others are £70 - is the one i mentioned on ebay sufficient?

is any PC PSU compatiable as long as it had enough power , 550w and up
