The PC Building Thread

www.msy.com.au and www.getright.com.au are 2 local stores James. They're around the cheaper end of the market if I want to walk in and buy components. Ideally I want something in a small size for general PC use and potentially for PES. Although, I don't mind picking it up on Xbox again this year.

Is there a direct link somewhere here for the PES demo download? I keep getting these sites which want me to download a program from which I can then download the demo?!

Not running any at the mo hence me being dumb and not bookmarking the link when I saw it posted! Just downloaded the RTM but I don't have a key so I guess it's a 90 day trial but I was reading upgrade versions are only going to be $40US or something? So I guess I'll just buy the upgrade one when it comes out, I really just wanted to test my 2nd SSD see how it's doing and test a couple of other things without messing up my win7 install :)

Ok fair enough, I am running dual boot on my laptop with Win 8 Corporate as it is the only one you can run for 90 days.

I have tried it and don't really like it, I have done the upgrade thing to get it for £14.99 on release but doubt I will ever switch as Win 8 is a pain in the arse to use and even worse if you don't know all the Windows shortcut keys, Microsoft just shouldn't of done such an amazing job with Windows 7.

Really like it TBH, and I just got a really useful new keyboard which has loads of spare keys I haven't used so I'll set them for the things I'm missing ;)

If you're interested in selling your key (should that be possible) let me know as I'll need two or maybe even three as the wife has two laptops :)

I really like Windows 7 so I would be reticent to upgrade. From what I've seen of Windows 8 it is more of a touchscreen tablet/phone oriented OS. I'm guessing there is a way to switch back to a more traditional desktop style UI, whether it be officially or via a mod?

I've read that the upgrade price is very reasonable and that performance with SSD's is better (quicker start up). Is this true? That's the only thing that would tempt me, but then again my Crucial M4 loads to desktop in not much over 20 seconds.

Bsmaff, is the 5870 graphics card much better than the one previously mentioned in your build from aria?

Reason I ask is eBay ones are going for £100 up at the moment

Also can you recommend a 2tb hard drive and blu ray drive from aria also , cheers mate

What is your budget on a graphics card, Dan?

Have you looked into a 6850 or 6870? I know the former can be picked up for under £100 new.

The 5870 is faster than both the 6850 and 6870.

It is just over 20% faster than the 6850 and about 5-10% faster than a 6870.

Whenever I have looked on ebay for other people I very rarely see the 5870 sell for more than £90, although the price has gone up recently on the 5870 because it is such a great card.

well haha....i'm not gonna scrimp as I want it to be a decent setup and also want it to run smooth as

checked on ebay and you have a few 5870's on there but wondered if there is a like for like graphics card that could give me more choice

as with most people on here it's trying to convince the other half it's cash well spent. Women don't understand that you need to upgrade sometimes if you want something better......does my head in....and i don't mean trade my mrs in haha.....although

anyway, back on track....is there a similar graphics card as good as the 5870?

I am very clever with my PC.
As I mentioned previous I still have my Antec P180 case which I have had for about 6 years now, the components change all the time yet the exterior stays exactly the same so my girlfriend is none the wiser, she knew I upgraded about 3 years ago but since she knew I have upgraded my motherboard and processor twice, the graphics card 3 times added a solid state drive and she thinks I have the same computer as 3 years ago.

When I upgraded to the SSD she said the computer is booting abit faster now and I just said I used a program called bootvis which gives your computer a faster boot up. But I am also a MCITP so anything I say computer wise and she just believes me.

bsmaff, can you advise a decent 2tb hard drive and blu ray drive from aria.co.uk

are all hard drives/blu drives compatible with the build you suggested?

All HD's are pretty much the same as long as you get a 7200RPM, it just comes down to brand preference between Western Digital and Seagate. As they are now the only 2 HD manufactures after buying everyone else out.

As for Bluray drives I have a Samsung, I have had 2 replacments though so I wouldn't recommend Samsung drives to anyone. I would just have a look around at which ever is the cheapest.

Hopefully later tonight I will be able to test out connecting my MacBook with Bootcamp to my 50" LG plasma TV. I've bought a new HDMI cable and a Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter. Hope it works though... I seem to remember I did try connecting it a while ago to watch stuff through my laptop on TV.
