The PC Building Thread

The adventure starts. It's quite exciting buying all the parts in anticipation of the build. Where are you buying from? I found Amazon as good as anywhere but I got most of my parts from Ebuyer.

Got my case from eBay for £34, same as the one bsmaff put forward from aria but with free postage so saved about £6

I'll probably hunt around using eBay,amazon, aria etc

I'm on the lookout for a blu ray drive instead of normal DVD as pretty much all my collection is blu ray

Also want to get a 2tb hard drive as I want to store all my films, music etc on there

I'll check for a clean download later for W7

Must admit I'm looking forward to patching pes , not done it really since ps2 days........you end up patching more than playing the game

Looking forward to building my own though and appreciate the help chaps with the many questions I've asked already

I am not too sure where the best place to get a clean ISO is as I download them from Technet.
Probably the best and only place to get clean ISO's that you know for sure are clean.

I did this for my Windows 7 Ultimate. A friend of mine has an MSDN account so ive had one of his keys for years now.

Danhammer - things to consider are what movies are you going to play

is it blueray which will have HD audio, and does your amp support this?

if so then you want a sound card that can handle hd audio or at least a motherboard with onboard audio that does hd sound (some graphics card handle this too)

look into this properly as some motherboard say they do hd audio but not over hdmi etc. which is a bit misleading etc.

if you are only going to use mkv rips with dolby digital and dts then you really wont have any problems with onboard sound. they generally do a good job anyway.

Yeah my amp handles hd audio

So I still need to get a sound card that handles hd audio?

just consider that when you are buying and don't take the description of the motherboard as a given.

either research the onboard chipset of the motherboard, or get a dedicated sound card that supports it or check that the GPU can support it (specifically search that it handles HD audio etc, to be on the safe side)

i remember buying a motherboard that said it supported HD audio but it didn't actually pass it over HDMI

I chose the hour one because for beginners it really guides them through everything, some feel more comfortable that way.

Thanks James. I ran the PC demo last year and the only test I didn't pass on the startup screen was for the GPU, which is an Nvidia 6600GT (my pc is 6 years old). Didn't work too badly but if I could upgrade for a cheap price I might do so.

Thanks Jonney. Been a while since I checked but I think it's an Antec 500w PSU. I'll need to double check. I'm running XP 32 bit and a P4 3gig CPU. So I'm not sure whether I'll just hold off and do a proper upgrade.

Ideally, I want my next PC to be in the mac-mini size. Not a bulky tower, so if I do want to game on it, I can shift it from my bedroom to the lounge room without any fuss :)

I'm using the 7850 and can highly recommend it. You may want to consider the 2GB VRAM versions if they are not much more money. It's also quite a compact card if you are looking to transfer it to a smaller system in future. The 7850 also has a very low power draw so won't be demanding on the PSU.

Depends what your budget is really. Could also look second hand and pick up a real bargain. How are PC component prices in Aus?

A mate of mine emmigrated there three years ago and said electrical prices were expensive compared to the UK, so he ended up buying stuff here and taking it with him.

www.msy.com.au and www.getright.com.au are 2 local stores James. They're around the cheaper end of the market if I want to walk in and buy components. Ideally I want something in a small size for general PC use and potentially for PES. Although, I don't mind picking it up on Xbox again this year.

Is there a direct link somewhere here for the PES demo download? I keep getting these sites which want me to download a program from which I can then download the demo?!
