The PC Building Thread

I might as well ask as well where do all he USB connections go? If you can use different cases how do you fit all of that stuff? Is it all connected to the motherboard?

There will be a bundle of wires inside the case which you simply plug in to the relevant connectors on the motherboard.

Here is a system build from Aria.co.uk

right chaps ordering this tonight

going to change the hard drive from 1tb to 2tb

going to change dvd drive to blu ray drive

Tbh you really don't need Windows 7 Professional it is designed for business use and has absolutly no benefit what so ever to a home user, so Home Premium is all you will ever need.
I also wouldn't get the one you linked to due to the fact it is a Dell load disk and not a geniune unaltered image.

The 7770 is 30-80% slower than a 5870 depending on game, if you are looking for a new graphics card which looks like you are I would recommend the 7850 for £130.
https://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecial...R5+PCI-Express+Graphics+Card+?productId=51846

The 3450 is a decent processor and gives a very good performance if it is cheaper by about £30-£40 then I would get that instead to save some money. But also note the 3450 is locked so you can't overclock it you might not want to overclock now but in a year or so time when you want to give your computer an extra performance boost you could with a 3550K.

thanks mate really appreciate the advice, i would be buying the wrong things otherwise

would this be ok? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Microsoft...ting_Software_Software_SR&hash=item35bfa435f7

regards to the processor would i ever need to overclock to play pro or fifa? not a massive gamer in that sense just like playing my footie games

arghhhhhh, do i go for the lesser one and save £40 or do i buy the one you suggested and be it "future proof" if i ever need to overclock

why would i need to overclock out of interest?

also what do you make of this bundle on ebay? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150807176163?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Processors now are plenty fast enough that you may never need to overclock it. My 2500k is still running at stock speeds and with my 7850 I can run most games at high to max settings (the likes of BF3 and Skyrim need top end cards to do that though).

Definitely get the 'k' version of the CPU because for a few pounds more it's nice to have the option to overclock. In the case of the 2500k it was a few pence more than the 2500. No brainer.

The 7850 is considered the best new mid-range graphics card you can buy so if you can find a good deal you will be well advised to get one. The overclocking potential is awesome and easy to do. I can give you a few pointers.

cool mate

what did you make of the bundle deal on ebay?

would i need 16gb? bsmaff recommended 8gb previously

The bundle seems pretty well priced. Just did an equivalent on Ebuyer and it was only about £10 less. You don't really need 16gb RAM - 4gb would be fine - I suppose there is no such thing as too much memory.

You could always look at the scan bundles which come pre-assembled and often overclocked:

http://www.scan.co.uk/3xs-overclocked-bundles

You will never need 16gb of ram.

The bundle did look pretty good yes but the problem was with the ram it was cheap 1333, but apart from that seems a tad over priced. If you could find a decent 2500k build on eBay someone is selling off then you could get yourself a bargain like Kevano got.

You also have about a month to get your system built in time for PES and FiFA coming out I would suggest getting that 7850 now though before they run out of stock.
I may also be selling my system as I am looking into getting a 3570K, plus my mrs is away this week with the little one so I have a week now to change my system so she has no idea what is going on.

My ram does generate more speed to an extent but only if the system uses it, I have 16GB in mine but my system barely goes over about 4GB usage, unless I am using Adobe Premiere.

8GB is normally recommended for 64 bit operating systems.

got my eye on a couple of 5870's on ebay around the £80 mark - end tomorrow

what's the difference between AMD and ATI? is it just the make?

sorry for the silly questions boys, honest i'm not on a wind up just picking your brains as you both know what your talking about

is the 2500k better than the 3570k then?

You could always look for a 2500k build/bundle as performance-wise it is very similar to the 3570k. I believe the 3570k is a little more efficient but the 2500k is reportedly cooler when overclocked.

As bsmaff said, you could get some better bargains on a 2500k CPU as it is last gen, but in name only in real terms.

That is pretty overpriced.

If I decide to sell my PC next week I will get a case and build it for you and then send it too you.

It is a 2600K and and Asus P8Z68 PRO/GEN 3 board and will supply 8GB of RAM. You would also then have a Windows 7 Home Premium geniune OEM key which is already activated to that machine.

As would only have listed it on ebay anyway.

5870 on ebay , some are sapphire radeon 5870 and some are ati radeon 5870 - any difference, are they all compitable?

how much mate?

It is pretty much the same as all other cheap graphics cards, it is upto you if you purchase a cheap one or not.

The problem being the next gen consoles will not be as powerful as people are hoping and a 7850 will be good enough to future proof you for the next gen as well, cheap graphics will struggle with most games now at full settings.

I would not skimp on the graphics card.

Yep, GPU is probably the most important piece of kit for determining how well you'll play games. Really try not to skimp on it, you'll only regret it later.

In the last year and a half, this is my third graphics cards and I still wouldn't mind upgrading again. It just makes sense to spend as much as you can and just get a good one that'll last.

Graphics cards are difficult to spec because things like core speeds don't always tell the full story of the card's performance. You really have to look at benchmark results in reviews, etc...

If you are going for a mid-range card then the 7850 is your best bet followed by the 560 Ti. These cards will give the best mix of price and performance. Otherwise look at something older like the 5870 or 6950 which still give great performance.

Thing is, you don't need a great card at all for PES or FIFA but the next-gen consoles are just around the corner which will have a knock-on effect for PC games (the quality of multi-format games will jump). You may also get the PC bug and want to play more demanding games. You could find a cheap card will be obsolete within a year and you'll have to spend out again. If you can budget for one of the above cards you'll set yourself up nicely for a few years ahead.

could i shave £40 off of this? anything i could downgrade on to fit in with budget

what i won't budge on is 2tb hard drive

motherboard or power supply be downsized? something cheaper?

i'm trying to add in a blu ray drive for £50

You could save some money but not a great deal.
You could get a different PSU but that wouldn't save much money. The CPU and the graphics card are the expensive parts and there the two parts you can't reduce or you will end up with a poor system.
