The Movies Thread

Just watched "The Man From Earth".

I normally like these 'arty' type films and this was pretty good - in its premise and story, but the acting was just awful. It was like a 'made for TV' special.

If you can look past the wooden acting, then the story, way its told and twist are enjoyable.

Yes I reckon it has that "made for TV" look and acting and photography could be much better. But somehow it matches the script and the feeling of some everyday meeting.

The star is the story. I don't even mind the twist (in my opinion it was not really necessary). The great things are hidden in deep and smart observations, like (this is not a literal quotation, but some ideas they say as I remember them):

- What is people for you?
- Trubulences in time

- You can live 10,000 years, but you're only a man and the human race is bigger than you. At the end, you don't know more than the rest.

- There was magic and gods living in the skies around that time. I often miss that.

I really enjoyed these parts:

When he was talking about Jesus, Buddha and religion in general. I really think it was done well and quite amusing how he was basically Jesus.

I...

Didnt really think the 'twist' was necessary either - the whole 'it was just a story' thing wasnt very dramatic as I think the viewer was 99.9% certain it WAS true and we knew he just said it was a story to end the conversation and get rid of everyone.

The real twist of course about him being the father of the psychologist was certainly not required and at the end of the day, I felt it was really rushed and not perfectly clear anyway (perhaps I was too tired by then). I think there is also a problem with this story - he said '60 years ago I used the name... blah blah', but that doctor was clearly older than 60 (I'd say nearer 70) and from the way John spoke, he was with the mother for a while before the psychologist was born (obviously!) meaning it should have been 70-80 years before.

But anyways, there ya go!

i went and seen the hangover on friday

was hil-arious

Night at The Museum 2

Good funny film with a few laughs in it.

I agree but it's a bit disappointing.
I loved the 1st one but I don't think I'll ever watch the sequel again. It's enjoyable but the element of surprise is gone.

6/10

Ghostbusters (BD) - 8/10

Screw the haters, grain is good.

If you watch it on the PS3 you get an XMB theme.

Watched The Man From Earth today. Drek deserves some royalties for getting people to watch this film. I enjoyed it. Decent storyline and I enjoyed it a lot. the misses liked it as well but unfortunately she had read a book a week ago that was almost the same basic storyline.

Good watch though

Transformers 2 - 9/10

Great entertainment, amazing sound design, looking forward to the BD release.

I hope the people at ILM are well paid.

The review I read said it was an 8/10 for action and a 2/10 for storyline. Surely, it can't be as bad as the story in the first?

Heard the same, MJ. It's meant to be exactly the same as the first film with all action and no story. I enjoyed the first film though so looking forward to this.

Bigger, badder, madder, faster, more intense!

This qoute from Empire sums up the film perfectly.

There is also a plug for a JJ Abrams film and a reference to Bad Boys 2 where the same camera technique is used.

Superman Returns (BD) - 7/10

Decent film, too much waffling though, hopefully they'll be more ruthless with the next film.

Has anyone watched Doomsday? Began to watch it yesterday but turned it off after 20min. Not because it was so bad just other stuff coming up. But it was starting to look bad...

Yeah I wrote a little review a few pages back. Basically, it's a mix of about 3 or 4 different films in one so it kind of messes up any story. It was OK though, not the worst film I've seen this year.

Yeah just finished it now, was hoping it would be like 28 days/weeks later but it was far more Madmax, a movie I never really liked.

It's recommended viewing for Nick though, loads of half mutilated, tattooed women wearing skimpy leather outfits....just his taste :D

Gonna watch Knowing HD later.....can't wait!

Doomsday - 6/10

Madmax meets 28days later, although sadly far more madmax then 28days later.

Angels&Demons - 8/10
Enjoyed it, although they always seem to dissapoint after reading the book. Also they changed the ending from the book which was needed as the book ending was crap. Oddly I found the book of Angels&Demons the better of the two yet found The DaVinciCode the better of the two movies, it just had more settings instead of driving around Rome and looking in Churches.

Knowing - 7/10
Why.........
Why do you put aliens in it?!?!!?! Can Hollywood not come up with something better, or preferably nothing at all, than f#$king aliens?!! There was no need, just leave the numbers/kids thing as something supernatural/mysterious and let them all die at the end. Would have made it far more interesting and surprising. Lately all these movies seem to need to have a good ending of sorts, which really we should be past now.
