The Dark Knight is pretty much a stunning film. It takes Batman Begins and just raises the stakes across the board. I've seen it twice now and I'm trying to figure out where they will go for the next chapter. Not just because Heath Ledger has passed away but because his Joker is the most intense and ruthless villain you can imagine. The portrayal really does live up to the hype. Any future Batman nemesis needs to bring their A game.
I was really worried that Ledger's performance would be over hyped and I tried to not watch it through the prism of his death, but its unavoidable. Regardless he imbues his character with a truly terrifying insanity. There are parts where he draws laughs from the audience but I didn't find them funny, I found these moments to be truly unsettling. One shot will go down in film history as an iconic image of a cinematic villain. It involves the Joker playing with a detonator. The audience chuckled but it really just gives you an insight into the character. The definitive Joker for our time. Its such a shame that Ledger and Bale won't get to further explore this relationship on film. Batman spends his life trying to impose order on a chaotic world whilst the Joker is a complete nihilist who just wants to send our world straight to hell. Its a shame for Batman movies but a true tragedy for Ledger's daughter and family that he his gone.
PS. If you like Christian Bale watch 3:10 to Yuma and Rescue Dawn. Or even The New World. I truly think that in twenty years we will think of him in the same way that we think of Al Pacino and De Niro now. As one of the greats. No doubt if Heath Ledger had lived he would of been in that class as well.
PSS. Imagine if in 15-20 years we get Bale as an aged Batman ala the graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns" That would be something to get very excited about.
