The Movies Thread

The Dark Knight is pretty much a stunning film. It takes Batman Begins and just raises the stakes across the board. I've seen it twice now and I'm trying to figure out where they will go for the next chapter. Not just because Heath Ledger has passed away but because his Joker is the most intense and ruthless villain you can imagine. The portrayal really does live up to the hype. Any future Batman nemesis needs to bring their A game.

I was really worried that Ledger's performance would be over hyped and I tried to not watch it through the prism of his death, but its unavoidable. Regardless he imbues his character with a truly terrifying insanity. There are parts where he draws laughs from the audience but I didn't find them funny, I found these moments to be truly unsettling. One shot will go down in film history as an iconic image of a cinematic villain. It involves the Joker playing with a detonator. The audience chuckled but it really just gives you an insight into the character. The definitive Joker for our time. Its such a shame that Ledger and Bale won't get to further explore this relationship on film. Batman spends his life trying to impose order on a chaotic world whilst the Joker is a complete nihilist who just wants to send our world straight to hell. Its a shame for Batman movies but a true tragedy for Ledger's daughter and family that he his gone.

PS. If you like Christian Bale watch 3:10 to Yuma and Rescue Dawn. Or even The New World. I truly think that in twenty years we will think of him in the same way that we think of Al Pacino and De Niro now. As one of the greats. No doubt if Heath Ledger had lived he would of been in that class as well.

PSS. Imagine if in 15-20 years we get Bale as an aged Batman ala the graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns" That would be something to get very excited about.

You Don't Mess with The Zohan

I loved the trailer but the movie is beyond my expectations.
I know a lot of people will hate it but not me !!!

8+/10

I watched it too, I thought it had its moments and thought it was funnier than Harold and Kumar 2, but I don't rate it that highly.

I'd give it a 6.5/10.

Watched Batman Begins again last night, but feel asleep at the end :((

Really good film, as good as I remembered.

Roll on Thursday!

As a huge Neil Patrick Harris fan (How I met your mother, Harold and Kumar etc) I watched his 3 part webseries of Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. I found it quite amusing, but musicals arent really my thing, so people who enjoy that kind of humor might like it. The actors are quite famous if youre a huge TV freak and the director is also famous, I think he did Buffy.

I think its because hes older and cant get away with the stupid guys he always plays

same for the frat pack now, there all getting on and films like Zoolander, Dodgeball and Oldschool wouldn't be the same with that cast if they made it now. Saying that Owen Wilson is trying to play that role still and so is Will Ferrell ::LOL:

The good thing is though is that the new breed are coming through with the Superbads, Knocked up and stuff so its all good :))

Oh yeah, I watched the 3 episodes last night as well and I found them cool. There are some pretty funny moments and the script is interesting, but musicals aren't my thing really. Anyway, anything with NPH means laughs. :DD

I'll watch The Prestige tonight after all the good things I've heard about it.

Batman Movie Curse...

Batman star Christian Bale was arrested by detectives investigating claims he assaulted two family members.

The Hollywood actor was being questioned by police at a central London police station today (Tuesday), sources said.

The 34-year-old is alleged to have lashed out at his mother and sister in his suite at Park Lane's Dorchester Hotel on Sunday.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment.

"He was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault. He currently remains in custody."

The actor was arrested just hours after he attended the first European screening of the new Batman blockbuster, The Dark Knight.

The actor joined co-stars Sir Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart at the Odeon West End cinema in Leicester Square.

The two women, who live in Dorset, went to a Hampshire police station yesterday to make a formal allegation.

The complaint about the actor was then passed to the Metropolitan Police for further investigation.

Just watched the trailer for The Spirit, I remember reading about it in Empire recently and I'm definitely going to see.

Reminds me of Sin City.

Just got back from Batman. Loved the story line, very very well done. Loved the little references to Batman comics too. I thought it was better than Batman Begins, which I thought was alright. Only thing that annoyed me so much was CHRISTIAN BALE'S UPPER LIP WHEN HES BATMAN!!!!! ARGH!!!!

Anyway, it was very long and a lot darker than I remember Batman Begins to be. I really like Nolan's Batmans, but I also like Burton's.

I don't usually like to rate movies, so I'd say between 8-10/10. Its one of the best superhero movies I've watched, because he is more down to earth and realistic to other ones. Joker is also done very well, but people shouldn't forget Aaron Eckhart's performance, very good as well. Thought Maggie Gyllenhall was a bit old and annoying though.

I thought two face's ruined face looked a bit crap though! And I'm quite sure hes the next villain! We only know that hes dead in public, but not actually dead.

Which one of these should i watch tonight?

Tale of two sisters, Inside, The Orphanage or Skeleton Key?

Did you not notice it in Batman Begins?? Its like hes constantly pouting.

Batman's voice is irritating...I only realised later that its necessary for him to speak like that to hide away from Bruce Wayne's voice...kinda realistic in a way.

His random disappearing trick is funny and amusing to me...again,only to realised later that...he is trained as a ninja..and ninjas do that all the time!

I know how they can bring back Joker into the script.Click the spoiler tag below if you lot a keen to know.

The only way to bring The Joker back into the storyline should be like this.Since he is put in jail or Arkham Asylum after being caught, the new storyline needs to be ahead of time, say like 5-10 years from "The Dark Knight".After doing time,The Joker would then be older in terms of appearance.Since Heath has passed away,a new, older guy would be needed to play the role. The Joker's appearance can be duplicated because of the make up done. His behaviour need not also be the same after doing time in jail.He can be more evil too, filled with anger and revenge...If anyone noticed,Heath's Joker is kinda young...unlike,the aged Joker played by Jack Nicholsen...hence,my storyline would be justified!

Your idea works, but:

To be honest I'd rather they don't bring him back and start off with 2face next film, and base each movie on a different villain... until eventually Batman is killed or something. As long as its dark and maintains its style. I'd only take Joker back say, in Batman 5.

edit -

Lucius also mentions that the new Batsuit can stop a cat - reference to Catwoman?

The Dark Knight

9+/10

Well for me this truly lived up to the expectations. To start off, I was in a bad mood come sitting down to watch it. I was annoyed and pissed off because I was at Star City, had paid £10 to see the film at this screening (we all got a limited poster which is amazing haha) and got into the screen late (NOT my fault which made it even worse :((), so ended up sitting in the very front row.

How they allow to have a row this close to the screen is beyond me. I'd put my fucking TV further away from the sofa in my living room.

Anyway, with having to sit really low in my seat and have my neck strained upwards for a good 3 hours nearly, and to love this film as much as I did really shows how utterly brilliant it is.

The pace of the film was flawless in my opinion. Not one minute dragged or were there any moments I started to drift off and lose concentration. This thing had me captivated all the way through. And it has been said many times but Ledgers performance as the Joker is truly brilliant and seriously creepy.

I can't wait to see this film again with a nice view :DD hopefully in an IMAX cinema!
