The Movies Thread

Monsters??????????????????? Are you kidding me?? That has to be the worst film i've ever seen and has the most misleading trailer ever.

'District 9' is a good alien film...

'Monsters' is quite possibly the biggest waste of an hour and a half I've ever spent in my life...

I actually thought that the understated tone of the "invasion" was a great way to show a smaller scale of a story. Admittedly it was more a romantic film about the two, but I thought it was done really well. District9 is good aswell.

I can't stress enough how bad I thought Monsters was. Seriously, I was looking at sending an email to trading standards. To wait for that amount of time with NOTHING happening in a film only to see two aliens doing it in a garage was a total joke.

The guy who made it needs to retire from the film industry.

In fairness to Monsters, blame the studio. They marketed it (wrongly) as an invasion film when essentially its a road movie and a pretty good one at that.

The director, Gareth Edwards, hails from Nuneaton (just down the road from me) and what he achieved on the budget he did is pretty remarkable and as a result is a great inspiration to filmmakers like myself.

But yeah - its not an invasion film and if you went into it thinking it was, then its Vertigo Films / Magnet Releasing's fault, certainly not the directors. And let me be clear - your perception of what you expect from a film going into 100% affects your final judgement. No doubt about it. I went into watching Monsters expecting a road movie and I totally enjoyed it. Had I expected an invasion film, then yeah, I don't think I would have liked it as much.

I think I can count "road movies" out of my preferred genres then. What else do you guys consider "road movies"?

Maybe that's why I liked it, didn't know what it was about, but that it had some good reviews. Saw a small clip with some Aliens in it, but got a more Fallout vibe then IndependentsDay. But if you were expecting an actionpacked invasion movie...well then it is crap, yeah.

Atleast it wasn't as bad as The Day The World Stood Still, I'm pretty sure they actually had MORE disaster scenes in the trailer then the actual movie!

 Didn't wanna ruin the plot to this one as I guess some will find it interesting, it's certainly more strange and whilst I wouldn't recommend it, the ending is strange enough me to say if you did watch it, i'd be interested to hear what you thought.

Not bad. Gyllenhaal is very convincing.

The Tree of Life

Beautiful movie, not a movie for everyone, but powerful.

Unknown = 4/10

Very avarage.

The beginning had promise even though this sort of concept has been done to death. The middle of the film dragged so much... boooooringggggg...... and by the end, it was oh so predictable and led to an immature couple of fight scenes...

Neeson should be in more challenging roles than this.. he doesn't seem to know how to say no to poor scripts lately

I feel sorry for anyone that paid to see Cop Out at the cinema.

I started watching it on Sky Movies but I could only tolerate twenty minutes, terrible film.

Saw Hangover II Saturday.

Dont want to sound condescending (but this will!), but from what I have read on loads of forums panning it - I dont think anyone 'gets it'.

Most of the complaints are saying "its exactly the same script as number 1" - which too me, was purposely done and the whole point of the movie.

Scenes were filmed in exactly the same way as the first just in a different setting with lots of little back references to the same scene in 1. I thought it was quite brave (not lazy) to do, due to the reaction its now getting from most, but personally I enjoyed it and thought it was almost taking the piss out of itself and that was the whole point of the movie.

The formula wouldnt (or shouldnt!) stretch to a 3rd movie and if they made one, I'd be very cautious, but if you enjoyed the first, you'll like this too.

I dont get the hate too, to be honest I thought it was as fun if not funnier than the first, which I didn't like it that much if anyone remembers.
I think they went a bit crazier this time and I liked a bit more too :) still not Todd Phillips best, can't top Old School.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

There are plenty of flaws (too slow, too much talking), but the characters are why I keep enjoying the series.
Not the weakest of the 4 imo, the story is good and less confusing, but it's way too long.

The Burning Plain - 6/10
