The Movies Thread

Those girls are too old for him.....and the wrong gender. No wonder he only gave it a 1.

The Adjustment Bureau - 8/10
Really good, looked a bit iffy from the trailer but the story and overall quality was really good

Paul - 6/10
I think those guys hit their career high in the first half of SofD, since then their movies are only sporadically funny.

Henry's Crime - 4/10
Keano Reeves seems to have become the black hole of decent movies. Since The Matrix and The Devil's Advocate I can't remember a good movie he has starred in!

True Grit - 7,5/10
Decent movie with good acting and stuff, although not much happend and not much went on. So a typical Oscar nominee!

I watched The Day The Earth Stood Still remake on Channel 4 last night. Highly insufferable viewing. The whole thing was just so badly written in truth. If i had to rate it then i would give it 1/5. It left me with more questions than answers in the end because nothing was explained at all throughout the film and quite frankly everything was questionable.

Then afterwards i caught Day of The Dead (original from 1985) on ITV 4 and it happened to be the first time i've seen it. It was just a complete lesson in how to make a good low-budget horror film. It wasn't just about drawing out scares for the sake of it, it was a well written plot about the human condition in extraordinary circumstances. I mean the film managed to put forward the concept that the zombies were the secondary enemies compared to the barbarism of some of the characters. It obviously takes influence from Lord of The Flies. The film cost $3.5million and i'm sure $3 million of that went on the makeup effects for the zombies, which were actually really good (take that CGI). The characters were completely one-dimensional but given that i thought it was a great positive that i still found myself actively interested in their fates. It goes down as a cult film but it's certainly a better story than 95% of other low budget horror films. 3/5.

3/5 is good to me by the way, it just says it's worth watching but it's not exactly a life changing experience

Finally watched Loft, a belgium film that Gerd recommended.

It's a very interesting thriller with a nice plot and the usual structure for this kind of film. Very well shot and edited, I had a pleasant time watching it. It may not be perfect, though, as I found the epilogue rather childish compared to the things that happened before. If you erase that last minute(s), the film is splendid and very enjoyable!

8/10 (could have been more if the final had been...

More rational. All friends should have served some time in jail. The "good guy" Bart shoudn't meet the whore again and the alcoholic shouldn't have been rewarded with a come back with the former wife. I would have loved a more sad and gritty final, with all friends loosing everything. But I guess the writer/producer needed to have some kind of happy ending, which didn't fit at all with the tone of the rest of the movie.

The A-Team - 7.5/10

Enjoyed it.

I like the 3rd. The best of the series.
I dont understand why people bother watching it, if they dont like what Bay do.

7/10

Quite enjoyed TF3. Took my eldest with me. Let's be honest, it's not going to be an intellectual film or anything like that, it's going to be robots fighting and blowing shit up. Anybody expecting much else is deluding themselves. Don't go if you expect anything different. If you go, enjoy it for what it is.

Not fussed on the leading lady though. Nice body and yes I obviously would but something just doesn't quite do it for me. She's a bit weird looking... or is it just me? Prob looks stunning if you see her irl but even some photos of her don't make me think phwoar compared to other beauties.

got round to watching Pirates of the Caribbean 4, really enjoyed it, although I'd say it's probably not as good as any of the previous 3, although the 1st one is out on it's own, that's a classic for me.

If I'd give it a vote, I'd go for 8.5/10, but that's me with a big bit of bias in there.

i saw it too.
7/10 for me. it did drag a bit though and i reckon an hour of the movie could have been cut

I personally watched cause I liked the first a lot, maybe my favorite Bay movie along with Bad Boys.

I gave a bad review expecting typical Michael Bay bullshit, which could be fun I admit, but the thing is that he makes more bad movies than good.

Long Pigs - 8/10

really enjoyed this low budget film. Found it fascinating...

X-Men First Class 8/10

Brilliantly cast, humorous at times with a hilarious cameo from Hugh Jackman, and well used method of incorperating a real historic event in to the realms of fantasy. Loved it...

Boondock Saints - 0/10

Ok, I know this is old but I've stumbled across it many times on other forums where people have enjoyed it... But... WOW... IT'S SOOOOOOOOO SHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got 30 minutes in and had to turn it off... AND... there's a sequel???? Seriously????

Restrepo (BD) - 8/10

Really insightful documentary. Well worth checking out.

Source Code (BD) - 6.5/10

Enjoyed it. Great concept, was very short though.

Good Will Hunting (BD) - 9/10

One of my favourite Matt Damon films. Still as sentimental as the first time I watched it.

Hoop Dreams - 8.5/10

Probably one of the best sports documentaries I've seen in years. Two kids from a similar area of Chicago trying to make it. Very realistic look at the sport.

More Than A Game - 8/10

Superb documentary and great true life story about a group of close friends and inspiring coach. Also shows the Rise of LeBron James from humble beginnings. Must watch for any basketball fan.

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives Of Others) 8.5/10

Really good film, good acting, interesting story and didn't feel like it dragged despite the length of the film. Worth watching if you don't mind subtitles (or speak German ;) )

Yep, I liked it as well. Good film.

If you like this documentary you will adore some of the ESPN 30 for 30 series (you may know them already). I totally recommend them:
http://30for30.espn.com/

Specifically about the NBA world, the following documentaries should be watched by any fan:
- Once Brothers (this one touched me a lot and I recalled my youth days watching Petrovic and Divac)
- The guru of go
- Without Bias
- Reggie Miller vs The New York Knicks (TheSpecialOne should watch this one)
- Jordan rides the bus

And other great documentaries of this series cover other sports, including football (Two Escobars), and are also very well done. Others are weaker, but interesting anyway.

Ended up watching Battle: LA.

Actually thought it was quite good, got a bit silly towards the end though.

7/10.

The Chaser = 7.5/10

Very good but too many plot holes to be a classic and
failed to see how the pimp went from forcing his client out on a job when she was ill to then having enough of a consience to put his life in danger to save her?

Cell 211 = 8.5/10

A cracker

A Prophet = 8/10

Another cracker

Das Leben der Anderen = 9.5/10

Watched this based on so many people praising it on here.... Wow... great movie...
