The Master League adventures thread

Goor has lost his place as a regular first team player. If Deschacht is playing he's captain. Otherwise Jelle Van Damme (i think, i'm not sure).

I hope the next PES is better than PES2008. It took me a while to notice it (maybe it's self delusion)but this is definitely the worst one since PES2...

What does the S stand for?

My team popularity went past A recently...

hello again. Apologies for the lack of reports, i've been a busy bee lately.

So i've finished my third season at Strasbourg now, which was a bit disappointing after the previous season's relative success (getting into Europe and winning the league cup). This season however, i slipped down the table and then clawed my way back to 11th. I came bottom of the European qualifiers and went out of the cup in the first round, on the away goals rule :CONF:

The good news is i've secured the signaure of Grégory Pujol from Valenciennes, for the coming season, a player who has impressed me in several PES games over the years. I'm hoping he'll add some skill, experience and technique upfront. I also brought in Cheikh Matar Gueye from FC Metz and Kalifa Cisse from Reading, both to bolster my defence. I found it hard to keep a lead last season.

SAINT-ETIENNE EDGE NINE GOAL THRILLER

l-asse-n-est-pas-morte_actus.jpg

Gomis bagged a hat-trick for the visitors

1ère Journée
Strasbourg 4 G.Pujol 4' 22' Abdessadki 39' Zenke 89'
Saint-Etienne 5 Guarin 6' Gigliotti 16' Gomis 42' 73' 83'

Strasbourg's fourth season under Professor Nutmeg got underway last night. The Alsace outfit looked to put last season's disappointment behind them with a win at home. New signing Grégory Pujol began in attack and the striker made an immediate impact with two goals on his debut. However, the game was very open and a goalfest ensued. Six goals in the first half (3-3) and a further three in the second. Bafetibis Gomis stole the show with a hat-trick, as the visitors edged the spectacular season opener at the Meinau Stadium.

PROFESSOR LACKING FORMULA

Strasbourg manager Professor Nutmeg has come under fire, after his side's woeful start to the 2010 season. Racing are currently propping up the table with one point, after the first four games of the season. The Alsace outfit have leaked thirteen goals in their first four encounters and the manager is now threatening wholesale changes. Custodian Stéphane Cassard may well be the first to be dropped, as Professor Nutmeg reshuffles his pack for the forthcoming games.

Bad luck for the great tactical wizzard...do i see other horizons looming???

Other breaking news: there are rumours in the Dutch Press that Jean Marc Bosman could well become the new coach of Frysian club Heerenveen...

His old companion Gerd DK is doing a splendid job at Everton. Everton is leading the Premiership with a 10 point margin on Man Utd and 11 points on Chelsea...

Hi proff,

You've caught me bang to rights! my stay at venlo made coppell's tenure at man city seem positively lengthy! :)

Basically to cut a long story short, I played 5 games with VVV and I just couldnt get excited about them in the way I had in previous ML's e.g. Maritimo & Espanyol (I think having an affinity to both places helped) and despite drawing 3 and losing 2 and scoring a few goals it just felt hollow. Even with the Metz ML, having seen them week in week out on Channel 4's Ligue 1 coverage gave me a feel for them.

Also... Ive been re-reading John Foot's book Calcio and getting back into watching more live Serie A games with Five's coverage and I've never done an Italian ML so everything seemed to come togther.

The choice of Torino was based on the fact they are a sleeping giant who need waking from their slumbers... oh and I love the kit too!!

FORZA IL TORO!

db

I've read John Foot's book too Db...great book.
Two other great books about Italian football: A season with Verona (not sure about the title) by Tim Parks and (and this is really great) "The Miracle of Castel di Sangro" by Joe Mc Ginnis.
I think Torino is a great choice, it's one of the teams i might prefer for a ML too...i have a soft spot for fallen giants (Spurs, Atletico Madrid, St-Etienne, Feyenoord,...).

Torino has a special place in my heart Db. However, i was eyeing a different Serie A team, if and when i start a new ML. I hope you do well with them.

I have that "excitement" with Strasbourg. I made a good choice. There are a couple of players for my shortlist of "Favourite PES2008 player" in there too. I've also made an effort not to completely change the squad. If i do, i'll change players i have previously bought, rather than the original squad members.

Right back at you sir! :)

have read both, id probably favour the verona one as Mcginnis got a bit annoying nearer the end i felt. Might not mean much to you living in Belgium but one of the fouding fathers of Calcio was a Mr James Ricardson Spensley!!

Tell me youve read Morbo by phil ball ??!

Thanks Proff. Glad you were sympathetic to my reasoning :) What do u make of Five's coverage generally? i think teh highlights show isnt bad albeit not on a par with Gazzetta

Db, i've never read Morbo...i'm searching it for a couple of months now...

Another fantastic and very moving book: "Stamping Grounds: Liechtenstein's World Cup Oddyssey" by Charlie Conelly...

Every glory hunter fan who laughs with minnows should read this one...since then i'm a bit of a fan of Liechtenstein...

I like my baldies, but i know what i would choose...not mr Richardson...

About books and completely off-topic but who cares...

I've discovered a litle gem. There is a literary football magazine in the Netherlands. It's called "Hard Gras", was founded in 1994 by Hugo Borst and Henk Spaan and it is terrific...it has 4 eiditions a year...i will subscribe to it.
I've just bought a brick of a book (over 1200 pages)with the best sports journalistic pieces since WWII in Dutch...the last part of the book (it's a chronological book) consists almost exclusively of pieces from Hard Gras...Yesterday i've been reading a piece (circa 15 pages) about the abduction of a Spanish goal scores in 1981 (which was written in 2001). If i remember well it was about the abduction of a player called Quique who at the time played for Barcelona. With hindsight everybody agrees that Barcelona lost the title to Atletico Madrid due to that abduction and the effect it had on the players...great reading.

STRASBOURG STEAL A POINT AT NANCY :w00t:

trpar1532730_24015_sq_medium.jpg

Brison thought he had scored
the winner

5ème Journée
Nancy 1 Brison 86'
Strasbourg 1 Zenke 88'(p)

Strasbourg gained their second point of the season on day 5, however, they remain firmly rooted to the foot of the table. As suspected, Professor Nutmeg made wholesale changes to his line-up, after an inauspicious start to the new season and chose a cautious 4-5-1 formation away to AS Nancy-Lorraine.

Strasbourg held out well for the majority of the game, but looked to have thrown it away yet again, when Jonathan Brison beat Nicolas Puydebois, four minutes from time. Amazingly, Nancy led for a mere two minutes, when centre back Ahmed Kantari (using the CB overlap tactic)was brought down in the box, winning a penalty for the visitors in the process. Substitute striker Simon Zenke dispatched the spot kick with ease, to draw level and lend some hope to Racing's as of yet, ominous campaign.

hello mate

a dramatic end to this local derby by the sounds of it!

Why has the start been so bad this season do you think?

Hi mate. Who knows? It's one of my worst starts to a season. I'm confident however i'll put a run together and get out of there. Perhaps a cup result will set us on our way.

Fingers have to be pointed at the defence though. We need to tighten up. There have been a few lapses in concentration too, à la Titus Bramble

A general reshuffle of personnel can help. I've dropped Cassard, my first choice keeper for the last three seasons. He looks like he may retire very soon (this season or next).

Hopefully we'll be climbing the table soon, or it'll be "au revoir."

Prof, an off-topic question, do you still play FIFA08????
A combination of both games would be fantastic...the gameplay of FIFA08 is better but all the players feel the same.
That's the thrill i get from PESML: buying a new player and discovering if he suits me or not and then discovering some unknown gems...

hi gerd, i haven't played my 360 in months, so no, i don't still play Fifa08. Although, i was getting into it just before PES came out. But yes, all players and teams play the same. That's its downfall.

This (PES) ML i have really allowed the youth players (of which there are a good few in the Strasbourg squad) to come through. Romain Gasmi is a great example. The young winger is going to be one of my favourite players of PES2008. I have also made limited signings, who have slotted in nicely, or taken time to make first team appearances, as in the case of Abdulmaged. I don't like looking at my squad five seasons on and seeing a completely different side. It's a sort of Arsene Wenger ethic. Some of you will of course know that Wenger played for Strasbourg in his rather short professional career. ;)) Indeed, winning the Ligue 1 title with them 78/79 and playing in the UEFA cup.

These are some of my players that i have been nurturing, well enough since very young up to now, they are first team vital players, however you should note that, i gave them some chances in cup matches and matches against lower clubs, and they will come around and have a average of 80+ ability.

1. Huddlestone
2. A. Ferdinand
3. Barnetta
4. Aissati
3. Wolf
4. Yohann Pele
5. Michael Dawson
6. Schwartz
7. Andy Cole (if you play ML long enough, he wil re-appear as a 17 yr. old)
8. Ishmael Miller
9. Micah Richards (that's a given)
10. Drenthe
11. Jargan
12. Pique
13. Vomme

Those are just some that i like. Maybe most of you guys already knew.

One of the best team that have a good average age and players' physical attributes is PSV Eindhoven, they have a young squad, 9 of their players are 21 yrs old and below. their centre backs are 190 cm in height (Alcides, Rajkovic) I chose PSV cause it's interesting to develop these young players into a European side team. with the addition of the players that i mention above. What do you guys think?

I've just bought a player called Alexis Allart from Sedan. Now I'd never heard of him before but decided I wanted to purchase a young striker to bolster my Lens team up to 4 strikers. I think I paid around 3,800 points for him and he's only played a couple of games for me before being called up for French U21 duty but he has some excellent stats for a 21 year old - I liken him to Michael Owen in his build and his pace - not quite the finishing yet but I'll be working on him ;)
