The Euro 2020 Thread

Was that song named "Nur Italien nicht" perhaps?

We had our own version of our basically saying that Germans were upset for getting a decent beating in 1970, 1982 and 2006...

With this I see nothing wrong, it's just banter.
When they say that we win because of the mafia or because of Berlusconi's influence (like they said, especially Brits after Milan humiliating United in 2007) that's where I drop the line I wouldn't like them to cross.

Exactly, that was the one I mean. I remember I also heard about that Italian answer. It is true that it is ok as long as it is not aiming below the belt with things like Mafia, war and so on. Somehow it is part of the game and as long as it is not disrespectful, it is acceptable.

I forgot to mention, during summer 2010 there was even a murder of two Italians killed by a German that argued with them about who won more World Cup titles. Extremely sick as it is just football...

I didn't remember that. 😲

Dive or no dive, that ship has sailed. But I still found this funny:

:APPLAUD: man, i just love that Ref mod (never seen that before)!! holy cow!

the fake dive option in PES i saw never used much by users. i tried a couple of times when playing local with mates at my place. some fun, when it works and even if not (good pals around are neccessary!) :D

Thats a bit different tho. It was an own goal.
It wasnt Croatia, kicking the ball back in the name of fair play, accidentally scoring.
Anyway - Football has changed in the last 10/20 years. You see much more diving, crying after every touch, acting like they were hit by a truck when someones tackles them.
The whole win-by-any-means mentality seems to affect more than just football games online.
Not much we can do about it.
Persistant offenders should be made to play a rugby match. Re-evaluate their understanding of pain. ;)

And while there's been no fans there's been the pathetic screaming at the slightest touch.

Shaming is definitely the path to take. Perhaps make them wear a logo on their shirt next game and instead of the sponsor it will simply say "Danger: May collapse on contact" on it.

i approve that suggestion! :D
give Neymar some shirts...!!!

sorry slamsoze got a bit carried away there.
No problem dude. I mean it was a big win, but not so a "walk in the park". At least until as long as , score was 1-1..

What's up back to Holland with my beloved Oranjes? Will we go for a 4-3-3 again?
My suggestion, if you can pass feedback :P

Coach: Guus Hiddink, i dont like Koeman as a manager dude,

classic Dutch 4-3-3, 1 DMF - 2 CMFs.

GK-Bizot
RB-Dumfries-CB-Van Dijk- CB-De Ligt-LB-Wijndal
DMF-Bazoer
CMF-Wijnaldum-CMF-F. De Jong
LWF Depay-RWF Berghuis
CF Malen or anyone else :)

Yeah I remember now : )
The Germans were a bit confused and nervous when your team was puting up a fight.
Then the goals were flying in making the Germans pretty confident in their teamt: cars with flags everywere...
Like when we the dutch getting in tournament vibe everyone is walking in orange and behaving extacy like... pretty cute stuff.
But when crossing the border cars with flags everywhere, a whole nation rising... mad stuff, made impact on me I guess.

Would like a comeback of Bazoer, talanted player.
It looks like we'll get nutcase van gaal again who did back Frank de Boer with his 5-3-2 during this tournament.
Our National FA is making a mess for years now. So to save their jobs they sacked de Boer straight away and are forced to come with a big name now:
Louis van Gaal.
Be prepared for more akward interviews where everybody gets lectured like children.

Last week he called our players a bunch of spoiled diva's during a media event. He allready knew that he would get the job so he felt to make a statement.
I hope that Qatar tournament will be a big flop. Our national team was almost forced to make a statment by the public and the media about Qatar.
this resulting in a slogan: "Football for Change" very weak. I feel the first team boycotting that tournament will win more than you could winning that tournament. "Courage for Football"

And your comment is right on time, pal!

Modern football - rotten to the core. Wish a few countries would boycott, it would only need a few of the more fancied teams to do it. Of course they won't, they'll go their tutting about it and have statements about how much the human right situation there is now improving or some other waffle, while their FA's collect their blood money.

If anyone dares to boycott, i can already see the usual FIFA/UEFA statement "politics out of football, no politics, teams involving politics will be banned for ever both the nations & the clubs & the sunday league players & the amateurs playing in the streets, etc, etc, etc"......

Truth.

I don't read süddeutsche, but your loving boring munich have Qatar Airways also as sponsor... ;)
Half of europe does thats the problem the context though is a german squad comming with a good statement and the corporate idiots than screwing sh*t up with decisions like these.

My message was only to say, I'm not suprised. :)

And on the picture we can see Sané, Gnabry, Kimmich and Neuer. They all play at FCBM.

Nerves are kicking in my 2 step boys will be watching as a family hopefully bring it home what i would do to witness my country win a major trophy in my lifetime and my children's but we have one team stopping us a big threat in the Italians who are showing why there unbeaten in so many games great for all football fans round the globe good luck too both teams but come on ENGLAND :)

In light of the talk about VAR, i have watched this, and it shows that most of our countries through the years have had some bad decisions.

Ah 1993 play offs, Leicester offside goal. Linesman how did you not see it! As if the 1992 semi final penalty shoot out wasn't enough trauma

I guess one thing that clip shows is that in principle VAR is a decent enough idea it's the implementation of it that needs sorting out. I'd also forgotten quite how far over the line that Lampard shot was!

Just let go Matt. take a deep breath...Breath in...Breath out. This is a classic case of Penalty Traumatic Stress Disorder. I prescribe watching Pompey's FA Cup win Twice Daily. ;)
:D We did go on to specialise in last day survivals in the Championship in the 90's. So that was something. I'd argue when it's successful they are actually some of the best football days ever.

Would have been something to get to the old Wembley though. Ok I'm letting it go now.

Let's hope there's no extra time and penalties tomorrow night. Well unless we're a goal down in added time of course!

Quick story about A) being an England fan, and B) my dad, who is old enough to have seen England win in 1966.

Against my better judgement, I have been visiting my dad each time an England game is on. We live an hour's drive from each other.

With Covid going on, I've been taking tests before each visit, using alcohol gel etc. and being relatively careful, just in-case.

With dad being 77 years old, there's an obvious risk, but my feeling was... I've been working from home, staying indoors, his living room is big enough that we can "socially distance" (even though he's only got a small TV in there), and...

...this will probably be the only time we get to see England reach the final of a major tournament together - maybe even see England win one together. Something I didn't think I'd see in my lifetime. Let alone his.

As he gets older, his memory is getting worse - to the point that the family have been worried about it for years now, but his options are limited at this stage. So there's a decent chance that, even if England win on Sunday, he won't remember it anyway.

But... As selfish as it sounds. I would remember it. And I'd remember that we saw it happen together, my dad and I. A memory I would (hopefully) have for the rest of my life.

So. We won against Denmark on Wednesday, celebrated, danced... The emotion of the moment was like nothing else I've experienced outside of being in a stadium again.

Dad took me to my first football game at Tranmere's home ground, Prenton Park, when I was about 10. I remember emerging from the top of the stairs in the stand, him holding my hand, smelling pies and gravy, and then suddenly a black sky, lit up by floodlights. The feeling of rain on my face. Then seeing an almost neon-green pitch from being illuminated by the lights. I was in love.

He hasn't been to a game in person for about 20 years, and this is the closest we'd ever get to being at a game together ever again.

I watched the whole second half of the England game standing up. I was going to say "through nerves" but that doesn't really make sense, typing it out - and yet, that's what it was. I was too tense to sit down, until it was over.

It was nerve-wracking. It was emotional. I would be lying if I said I didn't have a tear in my eye when the final whistle blew. It isn't something I will forget any time soon.

I turned to my dad not long after the final whistle, and said:

"So I'll be back on Sunday for THE FINAL!"

To which he replied, staring directly at me and seemingly into my soul - in a moment that will live with me as long as the events of Sunday's final will:

"Oh fuck off lad, let me watch the final in peace on the big telly in the bedroom, will you? Jesus Christ."

I was going to click the 'love' icon for that post right up until the spoiler which I of course read in Ricky Tomlinson's voice

Great post though and it's not selfish at all I don't think. Memories like that are special things. :D

I'll try to stop my whining about the English, I'll try my hardest ; )
Good luck!~ and thanks for the story.

Beautiful story Chris, Thanks for sharing. I like, Matt though Pissed with laughter at the spoiler, very Ricky like. :D Bless him.

1 This was the first thing i noticed at my first match, and conjured the same feeling.

2 I am usually up and down. When a cross comes over, i am up and over to the screen, trying to will the ball in.

Talking of nerves, it is still about 43 hours to kick off as i type but as it starts to sink in, i am starting to feel the nerves already. I keep visualising us walking out with the trophy just gleaming. This is unknown territory for us. Italia 90 and euro 96 even France 98 was bad, on the nerves. But being as the prize is now within touching distance, i am anticipating i will be a nervous wreck.

I envy the younger fans though, because they aren't carrying the baggage of the past with them. I hope for their sake's we succeed.
If we don't, i expect the comedown to be massive, probably bigger than losing a semi.
With that in mind, i have already played the scenario through a couple of times (in my mind) that if "we didn't quite have enough".
For use has a safety net.

Hopefully though none of that will be true and we've "only gone and bloody done it!!".
 :CALM:
