Sony PlayStation 4

Hmmm - its always been my argument about 'next gen'. Every generation, the graphics get better, but the extra power would be better served elsewhere IMO to give us more indepth gameplay that wasnt possible before.

Tis a shame. Its still very early in this gen and generally the signs are exremely encouraging for games to come.

AI is something that needs to be majorly improved in games, there is very few games out there where the AI has impressed me.

Half Life 2, F.E.A.R 1(PC) had amazing AI and Arma 2 and 3 also have pretty decent AI when it is set to a decent skill level.
Last of Us is probably one of the only console games where I felt the AI was semi decent although was incredibly scripted.

The problem I think as well is games like Dishourned get amazing reveiws and praised for its AI, when the AI is beyond terrible.

It seems though next gen is going for bigger worlds and more things to do, but I will make judgement in a years time when games become next gen and not as someone said as a spit and shine job.

The ai in dishonoured ruined the game for me. I don't think I got past the first main level once you're on your own. I got spotted by a guy from a mile away while another guy standing much closer somehow failed to see me. So I ran and warped myself across the map... Peeked over the edge of a building to see if it was clear and they knew where I was despite not seeing me. They were all below shouting at me.

Really hate shit ai like that where the whole map know where you are the moment a guard spots you.

I haven't touched my PS3 since getting my PS4, and tonight I went from a lengthy session on Infamous Second Son (wow, the neon stuff during night time looks amazing) to trying PES2014 on my PS3. I was shocked at how awful PES looked, it was like stepping ten years back in time. Low res, pixelated graphics, I couldn't believe it. It was only October that I thought this looked pretty good.

Surely other PS3 games don't look this bad in comparison, but all the stuff people said before the PS4 release that its games don't look that much better is just not true, it looks absolutely MILES better, not to mention how much faster everything is, like load times, system use etc. I was really quite shocked to be honest.

Reading posts like that ^ make my plan of waiting 'til the fall to grab a PS4 incredibly hard. I love my PS3 but there is enticing performance gap between the two and the games that run on them. Shame there's no decent games to play on the PS4 yet.

Yeah I couldn't believe how blurred pes was going back to it now. Plus the response time is terrible. It's like the game is lagging a second behind. A few months back I thought it looked and played great :/

Killzone is alright and pretty cheap now.

Obviously Infamous seems to be alright too.

I'm spending most of my time in the indies though, Resogun, Steamworld Dig, Dead Nation and Mercenary Kings are all excellent.

Of course you dont want to buy a £400 console to play £10 games on, but I think overall the PS4 is defo worth it.

Away from games for the moment, stuck Netflix on last night and its probably the best implementation of Netflix I've seen on any system, was really nice... anyways...

MLB The Show is out in a few weeks, really looking forward to that and it looks amazing graphics wise.

It depends on what games you like I suppose, but I have plenty of stuff to enjoy on it already. I really like Battlefield 4, FIFA, Infamous is good albeit a bit repetitive, and the indie games are pretty awesome.

It's funny, I got my PS4 on launch expecting to be underwhelmed because so many people were saying it's not big enough a jump from PS3, but the increase in resolution alone is pretty incredible on full 1080p. And while you immediately notice the jump in graphics, it's really not until you go back to PS3 after a while that you notice just how much of a difference there is.

I'd wait until there are games you ate interested in, but stuff like the speed of the console, multitasking, better integration with Netflix etc makes going back to PS3 feel like going back in time. Accessing the store on PS3 is soooo slow in comparison, and getting used to instantly flicking from game to video editor, then to Netflix is brilliant.

I mentioned these things on the PES thread and I don't think it went down too well, but the difference is shocking. I just can't go back to it. As you say, response times are bad, but the graphics are so blurred and even pixelated that I was in disbelief myself that only a few months back I thought it looked good. But it's not just the graphics, it felt like about ten minutes just to load the game up. It's already given me a while new appreciation for next gen.

Well PES was barely a next gen game when last gen was next gen, so no surprise it's now looking horrifically outdated compared to current gen.

Infamous Second Son is one of the best looking games I've ever seen. The visual effects are impressive, the city is huge, lightning is brilliant, everything moves fast and smooth and the facial expressions and general in-game cinematics are top notch. Definitely big production values here.

Gameplay and game design is a bit of a deja-vu and the plot holes don't make it better, but purely from a technical standpoint, the game is a perfect 10.

Sorry I'm a little late but I've recently seen your PS4 3.5" HDD mod. I'm actually quite interested in doing this myself. My only concern is of any possible issues that this could bring with the PS4 itself? Though logically, it doesn't void the warranty and worse case scenario should/would mean just the HDD dies/needs replacement.. I'm still a bit apprehensive and would basically like to know the possibilities of what else could go wrong? (If anything)

Thanks!

Yeah I'm enjoying the game if only because it's so beautiful to look at and also so fluid. But the music and cinematics are also first rate.

I hate it though when games offer a skills tree and then let you max it out really easily. I spent my time in the first city part of the game with the fire abilities taking control of the city and doing all the side missions, and I now have more shards than skills to use them on. When I got my neon powers, I straight away upgraded virtually everything to maximum. I don't mind that so much if I can then stomp around for most of the time as a bad ass, that's part of the story, but it would be nice if the skills tree offered some options. Say, if I choose this skill then I can't choose another set of skills and that defines you more as a character - a bit like Skyrim does I suppose.

Hi, The only thing I could think of is that you somehow could wire the SATA cable in wrong to the PS4 but that should simply then not detect the HDD and as soon as you fix it the PS4 will boot fine :)

I remember PES 2014 coming out on consoles and people thinking it looked very good. PC players tried saying how awful it looked and some console players refused to acknowledge it and were adamant the consoles looked fine.

PS4/XBone arrive and suddenly console players finally realise what PC players were on about. And the "NG" consoles haven't even reached the levels that PC gaming is at, yet.

Not aimed at anyone in here, by the way. I haven't got a clue on who was claiming console PES looked good but I certainly remember reading it.

I thought PES looked okay, much better than previous efforts but not up there with other PS3 games, but yeah, I do now know what PC gamers were on about, for sure.

+1

The PC boys have been saying this all along

The load times and general UI pace on the PS4 is truly something to behold Even accessing the PS store is so much better than the PS3

Gonna sell my PS3, the turning point for me was that despite the fact I absolutely adored The Last of Us and essentially bought the PS3 for that game I haven't bothered to connect it back up to download the DLC despite the fact I have the season pass for the game. Once you've played games on the PS4 there's no way you can go back to the PS3 IMO, especially with how terribly slow it is to boot/download/install etc.

Grand Theft Auto 5 is the only reason why I still have my PS3 connected. :)

GTA V holds up amazingly well, goes to show what an incredible job Rockstar did with that. But yeah, being able to zip around the UI on my PS4, coming out of a game instantly then resuming where it left off is brilliant. And as Zee says, the store is virtually instant too, it's all so fast and user friendly. Also, going back ro the PS3 pad made me appreciate just how lovely the DS4 pad is. So much better in every way.

So, I've now got to the bit just after the first neon section of Infamous, where it's now first thing in the morning in Seattle. I thought the game looked amazing before but the lighting in this part of the game is absolutely gorgeous. Image what they can do with games after three or four years.

Well I have finally given in myself and purchased a PS4.

Collecting one tonight from eBay for £300 with FIFA 14 and Killzone.

So if anyone wants to add me to PSN - bsmaff

I find it funny in here how so many people slag off PC players about how they are all graphics tarts and there is more to games than graphics, but as soon as a new console comes out, everyone says they can't play on their PS3's anymore because the graphics are shit....

I've always been an unashamed graphics tart. Amazing graphics can actually make me enjoy a game I otherwise wouldn't like so much. I'll readily admit that!

I've thought about getting a PC for a long time now but can't be arsed with keeping up with all the tech stuff, or dealing with Windows in any capacity. I just don't have the interest to keep upgrading and knowing when the latest drivers are out for something, or when the latest internal fan or ram is released.

So there it is, I'm a lazy graphics tart ;)

The problem with pc games vs ps3/360 games was the argument centred around pc gamers telling console gamers they should not be happy and generally listing why console games can't be good. The console gamers were trying to counter by saying, yes they're not as good as on pc, but they're fine for what they're used to.

It kinda got lost though and became more about how consoles suck.

You don't need to know anything anymore, loads of people are always willing to help you with a build.
You don't really need to know about dealing with Windows you just boot in and click Steam, games are auto patched as soon as you log in. Nvidia cards now tell you there is a new driver you just click update and it does it all for you. PC's are not the ball ache they used to be, they are incredibly user friendly now for gaming + The games are an absolute shit load cheaper.

The only downside to PC games is that you don't get the Triple A exclusives like you do on the consoles, Last of Us is worth a purchase of a PS3 on it's own... Some people would say Halo is worth the purchase of an Xbox too.

I have not seen much on the PS4 yet just what I saw at Eurogamer Expo, where apart from FIFA which I thought looked a massive upgrade nothing looked amazing graphically, but then I was going from PC visuals and not going from PS3 to PS4.
I have bought my PS4 so I can finally play next gen FIFA and play through the Last of Us when it is released, I just really wish they would hurry up and sort out DNLA support then I can start using my PS3 as a door stop.

What difficulty level are you guys playing Infamous on? I'm curious because I plan on picking it up next week and I've heard from multiple places that playing on the higher (highest?) difficulty is a must to get the best out of the gameplay.

I'm playing on the hardest difficulty, it's tough in places but I'm still pretty much breezing through it though. I'd imagine it's really easy on the lower difficulties.
