I think I mentioned this before, but since the hype of the ill fated Ultra 64 (now known as the Nintendo 64), acknowledgement of these "news" reports from videogame sources should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Whether PS3 can do this many teraflops more than the 360 is irrelevant. The fact remains that we've all seen the 360 in use and are only seeing these random videos of the PS3. The original XBox was a superior machine to the PS2, yet it got thrashed. Timing in the entertainment business is key.
Presuming the PS3 is gonna come out sometime next year (knowing Sony, it'll probably end up getting delayed to Christmas!), I can imagine there perhaps being an initial rush with PS3s going out of stock everywhere (like the 360 last Xmas). The average shopper will probably end up buying the discounted (and plentiful in stock) 360. So in a way, Sony are potentially missing out on two Christmases which can be a big ask for the PS3.
It'll also be especially difficult to sell a console which is undoubtedly gonna be more expensive than a year old next gen console but has practically the same games (with minor differences in graphics maybe). Fair enough, you'll get the odd exclusive game - but by then, remember that the developers will probably get used to the 360 architecture and make full use of the potential whereas they'll probably still on entry level with the PS3.
To the average gamer (myself included), I'm not gonna splash out another £300 or so to buy another console with better graphics (I, and many others, didn't do so with the original PS2/XBox). I'll probably be using it more often to watch movies - and MCE seems to be the standard for Media Centers.
The original PS2 personified the mass casual gamer scene whereas the XBox represented the minority, who appreciated the better graphics. With the time delay and constant hype surrounding the superior graphics of the PS3, it certainly looks like Microsoft/Sony are helping each other to switch these roles for the 360 and PS3.

Sony will have no problems whatsoever shifting their new machine, it's got so many well-known franchises that people have grown up on and will want the latest, newest versions of. I also doubt there'll be a shortage of machines, because I think they'll stagger the launch instead of doing a worldwide one.
I'd say the Xbox wasn't as successful because it never had the support in Asia - now that's a lot of quality, quality games it's missing out on and you're left mainly with generic shooters, racing and sports games. It's too early to judge the 360's initial launch in Japan but it looks like the cycle is repeating itself.rockykabir said:

A very good point about Asia (whose market generally tend to be a bit xenophobic about things apparently). However, it can also be argued that some of the biggest selling games (GTA I think?) didn't seem to sell that much in Asia. Additionally, it can be argued that some consoles (Neo Geo, Gamecube?) seem to sell quite well there but were generally regarded as flops here.
People were saying the same about Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast being able to beat the original Playstation cos of Nintendo and Sega's reputation. But it wasn't the case. If Microsoft play it right, they will have the upperhand in all this.
I think there is even more of a reason to believe there will be a shortage with Sony. The PSP saga is one to look at. Also, the costs involved in making each new machine is gonna limit how many Sony can produce initially as it is a huge financial risk - and if they turn out to be faulty for example, then thats another problem....
But as I said, it doesn't matter what happens. The games that dominate the charts (FIFA, Official Movie games, etc...) will be multiplatform anyway. The price will be quite important but I doubt we will see a cheap PS3. Either that, or they will use incredibly cheap components (as they have in the past with the PS2 - I'm on my 2nd one atm).

It doesn't matter that stuff like GTA might not sell particularly well in Japan (although I have no idea if this is the case). I don't really care what sells well in Japan, but I do care what Japanese developers put out for consoles I own, and on this one Sony had MS licked last time around and early signs are it's happening again.
The PSP shortage is a different matter I think, it's Sony's first handheld for a start and the scale of it's shortage was nothing compared to 360's.
As for parts, yes no doubt they will use cheap bits and bobs as they now have a proven track record of doing this in their only two consoles to date (I'm still on my first PS2 but have had two lasers in that time and now use a HDD as the laser went again and I'm fed up replacing it. I also had bits of my PSOne replaced). They'll make a loss on each console sold initially, they always do, but I'd say the odds are pretty strong that they'll also sell an absolute shitload of them eventually and it will be a success, in the same way PSOne and PS2 were.
The bottom line of course is games, what games are going to be available. I think the lack of support from Japan is going to hurt Microsoft again in terms of overall world sales. I am really disappointed in 360's line-up just now, I know it's a new console but the only games coming out for it anytime soon that I'm interested in are Fight Night R3 and maybe Burnout Revenge, and maybe Tomb Raider. The big hitters on 360 are going to be the likes of Halo 3, games I don't get excited about because, well, FPS' on a pad just don't do it for me but that's another argument.

I had an email from a mate in the US mentioning all that, except he told me it was in the US version of PSM2.
Theres also emerging rumours that Sony and Apple are working together on exclusive connectivity between ipods and its PS3. I do think thats false though, these rumours have only come about since Apple announced it will have blu ray drives in its future comps.
After reading the last few posts regarding how successful the PS3 will be, I really find it hard to grasp why anyone would question the ability of the machine.
I also cant see why anyone in their right mind would think the 360 would be more powerful than the PS3. Its launching well after the 360, so will obviously have some extra power. Whether this extra power will be used to its maximum effect is another matter, but it will still be there.
Then there the issue regarding the consoles popularity and whether it will beat Microsoft. Again I think its rather obvious.
Working in the retail side I can see how amazingly popular the 360 is, but the buzz around the PS3 is also apparent. I remember when I started in September, the pre-ordering for the 360 hadnt really taken off. We slowly and quietly reached our alloted figure of 150 machines and that was that. The buzz of the machine and people rushing in to pre-order only came around 2-3weeks before launch.
Now I tell you this, as soon as we advertise 'PS3 pre-order' it will be done in under a day guarenteed. Sony has set up a huge fan base that microsoft simply cant compete with.
Many people see a close battle this time around. I really dont. It will be closer than last time, but not enough to have Sony sweating.
And before anyones starts flaming me, I intend to buy a 360 when we get our next batch in. Its a great machine with some ok games. It needs more exclusive titles like PGR to compete with Sony though. For me it all depends on the second wave of games coming out. They really do need to look much better than a next-gen PC, and more importantly better than the first wave of PS3 games. Which I dont think it will.
All in all I go back to my first ever statement regarding both machines. They are two different machines that overall appeal to two different types of gamers. Choose whatever machine suits you.

All I know is that the PS2, didnt ever deliver the graphics it showed before the machine launched, I'm not saying it didnt have decent looking games, all I'm saying it the Emotion Engine didnt deliver.
Remember ISS PE2 on the PSX, remember the Intro movie, we all dreamed of the day we could play PES with footballers who looked like that. Then we were told it had been created on the PS2 Hardware, and basically we were all going to be playing the next Konami game with players looking like that. Guess what, we're still waiting. On the PS3, I dont doubt they will deliver that, but it's a generation later than they suggested.
Till PS3 is showing 'running' games, not demo's, not fmv's, not a load of spiel that some exec has given to some mag, esp a PS mag, like they would ever praise anything other than Sony. What they are hoping to attain in the above article is very advanced, and would be more akin to a Sony Vaio Laptop than a PSP, but if it works hell brilliant, till it works let's just treat it as speculation. To achieve all they claim there Online infrastructure will have to be so strong and secure, who wants there PS3 Home network hacked by some punter and a PSP?
Remember all Ninty promised with the GBA and GC link up? What did we get? A Pac-Man game that no one really cared about and a Zelda game. Using your Handheld as a controller for the bigger machine is also limiting, remember that Analogue nib on the PSP is woeful, and it's missing a couple of shoulder buttons.
Just keep your feet on the ground folks, and enjoy whats out there now, Live for the now, not tomorrow. I'm off to play some PES5 PSP during my lunch break.

I'm sorry but I think you have forgotten what the demos before PS2 release really looked like. Most people(especially xbox fans) use this as an argument of $ony lying, but its more than false.
The Final Fantasy 8 Ballroom demo, the most famed demo that people say the PS2 never reached.
Take those pics in, look at all the jaggies, all the low low res textures, the almost zero amount of facial expression. Yeah I can think of many games that surpassed this tech demo that everybody wants to use as an example of how $ony lied.
Hmm Final Fantasy X looked just about as good. Compare with first pic of the FF8 ballroom demo.
Then there was the old man demo and the ridge racer girl
Silent Hill 3 did look just as good if not better especially since it was more than just a blank background.
Lets also look at early Gran Turismo footage from before the PS2 Launched, sorry for the small shot, its all I could find.
Now for the gran turismo 3 that we got.
Besided this being a crappy pic, I think the real game had much more detail and I wont even bother posting a GT4 screen as we all know it looked way better than what $ony showed us in 1999.
Oh and just for the hell of it, lets look at the xbox tech demo(raven) and what they promised.
This crap looks more like what the xbox 360 could do, not the original xbox.

The PSX, yeah that was funny. I never understood why they thought it would sell well.
Doom3 on PC looked that good, but it did not on the xbox. Yes the xbox had similar lighting effects, I will give you that, but it was not 100% jaggie free like the Raven Demo.Holio said:

Nice to see a fellow deftones fan on Evo web.
I agree as well about the PS2. While the first generation of PS2 games didn't look as good as the tech demos, the likes of GT4, WE9, Resi 4 all look as good, if not better, than the demos that were shown before the release of the console.

Weekly Famitsu, one of the leading Japanese video game publications, has released a survey of readers, game developers, and retailers on the level of interest in both next-generation and current game consoles. Website Revolution Report has translated the results, which put Nintendo's Revolution system a very close second to the PlayStation 3.
The gap between the two is slightly wider in the case of developers, 53.7% of whom name the PS3 their most anticipated system compared to 41.4% picking the Revolution, and the retailers, who come down in favor of the PS3 56.9% to 43.9%. Gamers, however, differ by less than one percentage point: 45.8% are most looking forward to the Revolution, while 46.3% chose the PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360, also included in the survey, was selected by only 2.4% of developers, 1.7% of retailers, and a comparatively robust 7.9% of gamers.
Nintendo also came out well in the question of what respondents thought would be the #1 system of 2006: the Nintendo DS took 49.9% of the developer vote and 38.3% of the retailer vote, the clear winner in both cases. The PS3 and Revolution were next on both lists, with the retailers favoring the PS3 more, giving the system 31.5% of their vote. The PSP and Xbox 360 got less than 5% on both lists, with the GameCube not even considered.
Gamers also selected the "overall top platform," but a slightly confusing methodology let Famitsu to admit that it was unclear whether gamers had cast 40.3% of their vote for the PS3 on the basis that they thought it would win, or whether they thought it should win. Second place went to the Nintendo DS, with 32.6%.

Of the list of 45 games you have posted TG, 12 out of the list are FPS, something that many PS2 fans criticised the XB of having 'too many' FPS.
As for your last post, it's very very simple. I reckon the PS3 will probably be released in the States around the same time as the 360 was last year, around Thanksgiving, in time for the Christmas rush to buy all things new and shiny technology.
Now picture Granny X or Mummy Y going into big games / electronics Store. They say, we want a PS3, sales assistant then says, sorry if you havent pre-ordered you wont get one, would you like to go on this HUGE waiting list or would you maybe be better buying this......... thus a console called a 360 and hell it's actually cheaper than the PS3 and hell the games are pretty similar.
Thus cause PS3 is in shortage, consumers would buy an alternative, it's very simple shop economics mate, the sales assistant is going to do there best to sell that person something, whether its what they came into the store for or not.
There is no possible way that Sony will be able to supply the demand for the console until months after it launches, it's as simple as, yields of the cell chip have been lower than Sony expected in production and thus the whole hold up and wait, till they can get the new technology coming along the production line at better yields, or quicker it'll be a slow process mate.
