Sony PlayStation 3

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

For all the people out there who think I bash the PS3, I've come across the first known pic of it, and I think I'll get one. ;)

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

PS3 may have 12/45 of those games listed being FPS but it's also got also has Japanese developer support, which brings in a big market that MS miss out on.

Think Thomas is just laughing at MS' attempt to say PS2s have only been selling because folk have no choice given the 360's selling out. Talk about spin! People don't automatically buy stuff just because their first choice isn't available.

As for supplying the PS3, as far as I'm aware Sony have announced nothing on release dates, or whether the launch will be global or staggered, so it's extremely presumptuous of you to declare that there will be a shortage as if it's fact.

It will happen mate, look at the simple facts, Sony simply wont have enough for any region when they launch because it'll be in such a great demand it will simply sell out the first allocation, Japan will get the first batch, and it will sell out, no matter how many they make. The punters will go nuts for it.

Sony have never done a worldwide realease on anything yet, hell they dont even release in 2 regions within the same month. Shortages of the the PSP and PS2 in the past has shown the demand is massive. Two Christmas's ago the Slimline PS2 sold out in the UK, what happened next was the XB then became Sold Out, I can bet you no one was more surprised than MS, why, because it sold out, MS couldnt get any into the stores, in fact Sony got Slimlines back in the store before MS could get the XB back on the shelves.

If Sony wait till the Q4 to release in the US or Europe, it'll sell out mate, as simple as, thus people will want something else, be it 360 or Rev or whatever.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

Of course they'll sell out, but that's very different from a 'shortage'. I doubt there will be as much hassle trying to get one of these as there was a 360 - that was the case with slimline PS2s and PSPs anyway, nowhere near as big a shortage.

As for Xboxs being sold out, sorry but in Glasgow they weren't nearly sold out when the slim PS2 went off the shelves, and it's the first I've ever heard of them being sold out anywhere when you mentioned it there.

Disagree that folk will simply buy something else if PS3 is gone, one because many will just want a PS3 and have no interest in the other machines and two because even when it sells out I don't think the waiting time for re-supply will be nearly as bad as 360's was/is, so they'll simply wait.

I also agree on this. If they have already waited for the PS3 and not bought an xbox 360 or even attempted to, they are not going to buy one just because they can't get a PS3 or they would already own an xbox 360 as you can't get the PS3 right now.

Sony Hosts Exclusive PS3 Event (February 08, 2006)

by: Ray Almeda

EXCLUSIVE: Sony is presenting PS3 content to game developers sooner than the Game Developers Conference. The in-depth report.

Sony may have opened the lid early to game developers with more concrete information on the upcoming Sony PlayStation 3. Despite most major gaming developers prepping for the Game Developers Conference 2006 in March, it certainly won't be the first time this year that numerous companies have experienced an extensive amount of near-finalized information on the Japan-based company's next-generation console.

According to sources close with the Advanced Media Network, Sony has been secretly holding meetings with a number of major game developers and high-level executives on the Sony PlayStation 3 at their American entertainment outlet, the Sony Metreon in San Francisco. Reports have been coming in that Sony had presented extensive demonstrations on PS3 content in the building's Action Theatre area, a small theater usually reserved for private parties and anime screenings.

In attendance of these demonstrations - possibly hardware related and most probably in preparation for next month's GDC '06 - were also key game designers, intrigued by the system's rapidly growing hype, who were escorted discreetly throughout the demonstrations. The extremely exclusive, invite-only event occured on Monday afternoon, with reason to believe that there could be more meet-ups throughout the week.

An issue that has been debated as of late has been the unannounced release date for the next-gen system. Although the gamer public could hear an official word by Sony at this year's GDC '06, it remains to be seen if Monday's event is related. The company has also been approached with constant fan-base backfire with huge criticism on the questionable design of the PS3 controller. With the Nintendo Revolution sure to be discussed during Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's keynote at GDC '06, Sony's PS3 has enough reason to warrant similar arisings of new information on the system during the show.

AMN's offices are in downtown San Francisco, and we will surely keep you updated on the situation, as well as more concrete details soon. AMN will be investigating the situation further, so stay tuned.

Sony to showcase PS3 at Taipei Game Show 2006

Sony will showcase the PlayStation 3 (PS3) at the upcoming Taipei Game Show (TGS) 2006, which takes place between February 16-20. This will be a first Taipei showing for Sony’s new game console, prior to the official worldwide launch of the unit, although Sony has already shown the PS3 in the US and Japan.

Sony’s exhibit will occupy a total of 80 booths at the TGS show, including 20 booths allocated exclusively for the PS3, according to a February 9 report in the Chinese-language Commercial Times.

The Taipei showing is a move, by Sony, in a marketing campaign against its rival Microsoft, which will begin to market its Xbox 360 in Taiwan, starting March 16, the paper said.

In addition to a recent announcement of lower prices for the Xbox 360 when it first goes on sale, Microsoft Taiwan also stated on February 8 that it will market a total of 19 game titles for the Xbox 360, to coincide with its official launch in Taipei, instead of 15 titles as originally planned, according to the report.

The 19 titles include PGR 3 (Project Gotham Racing 3), designed by Microsoft Game Studios, NBA 6 by Electronic Arts, Call of Duty 2 by Activision, Ridge Racer 6 by Namco, and Dead or Alive 4 by Tecmo, the report stated.

Good news for PS3 launch supply

According to Warren Communications News, William Zeitler, Senior Vice President of IBM’s Systems & Technology Group, told a news conference yesterday that "yield learning" on the Cell processor that forms the core of Sony´s PlayStation 3 console has been "faster than on any chip we’ve done." In English, that means that IBM is learning quickly how to produce more working Cell processors per batch of chips they cook up. This bodes well for supply of this critical component if factories contracted by Sony to produce components for the PS3 are able to crank out lots and lots of Cell processors in record time once the PS3 heads into full production.

This doesn´t necessarily mean that the PS3 won´t be scarce at launch, though. Consoles are made of many components. A shortage of any single component can disrupt an entire plan, as Microsoft learned during the launch of the Xbox 360. Plus, IBM´s Zeitler notes that the company was able to ramp up their production of Xbox 360 parts quickly as well. What this tells us is that if the PS3 is delayed or is hard to come by, it probably won´t be IBM´s fault.

Finally some news coming out of Sony! Any sort of news coming out of this show would be a bonus.

Cheers Thomas :)

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

nice find TG, at least we dont have to wait any longer for official word,i (in most cases) believe Sony's beast of a console but there's nothing like hearing (or if possible, seeing) the raw thing from the horses mouth. cant wait :)

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

First PS3 hands-on report (still missing some important info tho.)

Kikizo is claiming that they've gained access to "three PS3 developers in multiple territories," which--of course--means that they can't say anything about the games in development without jeopardizing the jobs of their confidential friends. They were willing to talk about the current working state of the PS3, however, so here are a few highlights of what they had to say:

1. The hardware's close to final, but still hasn't squeezed into those empty PS3 cases yet. An alleged senior developer is quoted as saying: "I think to fit everything that Sony wants in there AND leave space for a 2.5 inch hard drive, the machine would have to grow. The models they're showing off are way too small for what they want."
2. Upgraded controller or games media? Well, "developers are designing games with the familiar DualShock 2 controls in mind," and they're "programming the game as if it will be written for a 10-speed DVD drive" (so as not to "affect load time"). The situation may change in the future, but that's the reality for these devs right now.
3. Games oughtta be more immersive thanks to the PS3's supposed ability to handle "more stuff simultaneously" as "a machine barely superior to Xbox 360." For this small system gap to widen, "...Sony will have to make available to [devs] libraries and new routines... something they've been severely lacking at so far."
4. For reference, "current playable content" looks more like Fifth Phantom Saga than Killzone or Motorstorm, but MGS4-quality graphics are looking more and more possible (which is probably a good thing), while launch titles may resemble "nice Xbox 360 material" like Dead or Alive 4 and Gears of War.

There's a lot here that Sony still hasn't revealed--such as price point and release date--but we're left to wonder what's causing such a Revolution-like PR blackout. Even Major Nelson's getting into the act, pointing out there was "no mention of a unified on-line service," and asking, "Also, what happend [sic] to the 1080p?" Upscaling the majority of PS3 games from a rather 360-ish 720p or 1080i, while great for frame rates (and squeezing out "the best effects and performance"), would be quite a blow to the system's supposed visual superiority.

These are exciting times for Sony fans, however, despite any shortcomings described in this "PS3 virginity-busting experience." The graphics are coming along, and the system's beginning to stand tall beside its next-gen rivals. Online's still a wild card, and the tech could be pricey, but we can't wait to finally see some games in action.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

Great find Mr Thing, probably the most realistic stuff in this whole thread. Check back a few pages and you will see it's almost kinda like the stuff I was saying..............

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

Sound very good for the PS3 :applause:
more powerfull than the Xbox 360 confirmation, better graphics, few games already finished and look like E3 presentation, only the mystery Killzone stay, the guy says no, but need wait demo from Guerilla and it's only the first games :)

and the pad...lol

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

he just loves to stick the boot in on the 360 doesnt he..... :)

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

I personally dont care if the PS3 is weaker than the Xbox360. All that matters is the huge backing Sony have from 3rd party developers.
The list of games that are set for the PS3 alone makes this a must buy console.

How many of you will actually care if the PS3 version of PES6 looks worse than FIFA or has longer loading, etc? How many of you will care about the power of the console when playing the likes of MGS4, Devil May Cry 4, Tekken 6, or any other Sony game that you once loved on the PS2?

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

Ill stick to PS3... the 360 is available now but its hell buggy machine, whos here got one?? Have you guys tried old xbox games?? 5/7 out of 30 then seems to work quite erratic, and all suffer if you try to run old games...
MS had to wait a little longer... its a shame really. Lets see what problems have the ps3 at launch (hope none but cant asure it wont).
AS for now, the 360 rush has way too many problems/hassles in a lot of aspects and MS running to tap the holes like the mole smash games...

:(

Well who's here got a PS3? How do you know it won't be buggy?

Only a few months to go till the supposed launch date, and they still haven't finished the construction of the console (hence the uncertainty over the fitting of the 2.5" HDD). Not a good sign if you want a bugfree console.

TBH, the more I hear about the 360 and PS3, the more I am disliking them and looking forward to the Nintendo Revolution. Even though similarly, there ain't much news about it, we will at least be guaranteed original (and fun) games :)

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

rocky.... did you read what i wrote... ??? im sure it WILL have some problems, i just hope its not as much as the 360 seems to have. Thats it.

The 360 its a fact. (im talking about problems). We can easily guess it will have problems, as these new generation has more horse power and probably heat problems is more likely to affect.

So going back to what ive said, i HOPE it has less problems, or at least something that i least doesnt screw my happiness when playing a game :)

guess we will have concrete news and specs at E3... damn patience.....

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

safe :)
I'm just a bit wary cos all Microsoft and Sony are talking about are the random GPUs and hardware. Nothing really about where it really matters...the games.

Although it is fantastic (minus the defects of course), the 360 hardly has any games worth buying it for. And it doesn't seem like changing for the next few months :s

Nintendo on the other hand are talking about how they are trying to expand the gaming experience. TBH, I don't really care if the PS3 does umpteen teraflops, just show us the games! :)

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

Well tbh, if Sony simply ported most PS2 games onto PS3 with better graphics, I'd still enjoy the PS3 a lot more.
So I dont see where they can go wrong when they release actual sequels to those great games on the new console.

And to clear the thing about graphics up. What they said is that although the graphics will look more or less the same as the Xbox360, it can handle more of it on screen at once. So let say a racing game was released on both consoles, the graphics would be the same but when the X360 has only 20 cars on screen at once, the PS3 might have 30.
So its kinda like have 2 similar PCs but one has more RAM.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

which is a good look for future football games as crowds can now be 3D, with different animations for a group/set of people and there can be loads going on , on the sidelines as well, without distrupting the gameplay ;)

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

And no slowdown on PES/WE, and crowds on "Wide" camera!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread

They 360 aint that bad in terms of bugs! most of them have been ironed out with the Dash Update.
