Sony PlayStation 3

Some are, some aren't. For example, every disc produced by Warner and Paramount so far is region-free (quite impressive really), whereas FOX region-lock every single one (being a set of bastards). There's a list here.

This is something that really pisses me off, all of this region-locking crap, especially with games. They take an extra 3-6 months, sometimes longer, to release a US game in the UK - for absolutely no reason. The game is the same, the accents are all still American, they say the same things... But in the manual, the US helplines are changed to UK ones and the dollar signs are changed to pounds. How is it fair?

These bastards would put computer-chips in your mouths if they could get away with it, so that if you went on holiday to the US and you tried to eat a burger, it would get caught in your throat and choke you to death unless you paid £500 for a new chip to eat it with.

I agree mate.

Right now like Jack says Blu Ray movies are region free. This is only because right now Japan and the US share the same region coding. Unfortunately Europe wont be, so Blu Ray movies released in US and Japan WONT work over here.

Ive got the same problem playing normal region 2 dvds on my Japanese PS3. As most of you know Europe and Japan are both Region 2. Unfortunately the PS3 recognises the difference from PAL region 2 and NTSC region 2. Meaning I cant play any dvd on my PS3 that I buy from Europe.

Its a right shambles.

Apparently, you can still preorder it but if you get the PSP too, you get to jump the line and your order becomes a higher priority.

I think Argos are doing preorders without having to purchase a PSP apparently.

Who's gonna preorder here? I'm tempted but my brain (and wallet :( :( ) is telling me to wait until late this year :(

Depends on the games really. If theres a game in the launch line up that you cant get for the 360 that you want, then buy one. If not then theres no point.

For most of us here, Im sure once Konami release some info on WE on the PS3 everyone will be getting one. That is if its no cheapo port and a true next gen version.

^ dont get your hopes up, it wasnt until PES3 on PS2 that the game changed to a "more like that generation" look about it... I reckon by PES8 we will see a True Next Gen PES.

Dj

But who knows, they might have been working on the true next gen version for quite some time like how EA did with FIFA07.

I preordered a PS3 from the very first batch at Amazon (I actually ordered it within 10 seconds of it being available ) but I also just got my Gamestation preorder confirmed today.
I dont really know how reliable both are cuz they both have a history but Amazon promises that they'll only take the same amount of preorders as their console allocation. And my Gamestation preorder was made 10 months ago and was just confirmed with a order number and everything.

What should I do to make sure I get the console asap? Cuz I dont want to keep both orders to the point where I have to pay for both of them.

I personally think you'll be fine with either. I know that all retailers will be getting fantastic supplies of the PS3. Sony has managed to get a large quantity ready for the UK launch.

I say take back which ever one that is easiest to refund. Simple as.

I have to say its looking very good for the PS3 launch. Preorders are going through the roof at many retailers.

So should I cancel one of them? And if I should, which one should it be?

Most places wont give refunds unless theres a fault in the item that you bought.

You will still get your money back and more if you do end up with both, the PS3 will sell out Rune, and it will be worth the same if not more, having 2 pre-orders is a good way of ensuring you do get one! I mean look now, the Wii is still pretty damn scarce, and after Sony get their launch machines out, it could well be a dry summer before they start getting them back in stock for the Christmas rush.

I'm serious. I wouldnt mind giving it to someone here at RRP. Maybe around £30 more just to get me an extra pad. But not any more than that.

So when's the pods out then?, just got me a 40" samsung beauty, (more like a beast), seriously can't wait anymore..

And prob another 30 to cover postage eh? Exactly how heavy is this machine? I know the XB's would cost about 20-25 quid to post, just wondering if the PS3 is the same, roll on the PSthree I say.

With just a month to launch, there bound to be pods coming to some of the bigger stores, maybe Adonis's store will be getting a pod in?

The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine™..... It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation® (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation®2 (PS2) titles.

I love how they announce this after the pre-orders!!

Good old Sony... missing out finer details as per usual.

When I get my import ill only be able to play American PS2 games on it anyway so my PS2 will still have some life left in it for now.

To add to LemonJelly's post:

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/technol..._in_europe_by_slugging_ps2_compatibility.html

It's suggested that the PS2 compatability removal was done to reduce manufacturing costs - if so, why isn't this saving passed onto us european consumers? We're being charged the most after all....Sony really needs to get new PR peeps :( :(

Without PS2/PS1 games, there ain't much else to play on the PS3 on launch....which makes the incentive to buy even less - and here was I possibly thinking of preordering one :(

The PS3 ain't doing too well in the US and Japan (there are plenty in stock in US stores & some stores in Japan have reduced the cost in order to sell stock) - so really, we are a bit of hope to the Sony bosses...I don't know how things will help if they continue to treat us like trash :(

and annoyingly, I still want one

I know how you feel! I'm a huge fan of MGS and Final Fantasy (although, I doubt I'll be able to commit another 50 or so hours to the latter whilst working). I'm also wanting to try out HD movies & shows....but Sony's attitude to the PS3 is putting me off (partly why I didn't purchase their non-MP3 music players and non-SD Card cameras).

Sadly, if Sony are to lose out with the PS3, they only have themselves to blame

I still find it hard to believe how much respect Sony have lost in such a short space of time.
They really f*cked us over.

I think this generation a different console might come out on top in all 3 of the main regions.

I think Wii will win in Japan, PlayStation 3 will win in Europe and Xbox 360 will win in America.

Well I wish I could be more specific by just saying 'very soon', but unfortunately thats all I can say.

I do know Sony are discussing with retailers about putting large 'experience' bays into selected stores. This includes a large dome like area, consisting of a 40inch TV, couch, PS3 and PSPs surrounding it.

Very elaborate, but unfortunately the store Im working wont recieve it, its going to the new Virgin store in Manchester City Centre. By the way Virgin are the official PS3 launch retailer, so Sony are guarenteeing all units pre-ordered in our stores.
