Sony PlayStation 3

220,000 is more than enough right?
How many 360s and Wiis did we get at launch?

And I still doubt that figure!

Unsure about Wii's but we got 150,00 Xbox 360's.

I agree, I highly doubt that figure from Sony. I cant see them meeting their launch estimate.

Digital(HDMI) vs Analog(Component).........a difference you wont even be able to notice with the naked eye in all honesty.......well, at least with the current resolutions we use.

there is a noticeable difference between HDMI and component. it's like the difference between DVI and analog input for your computer monitor. one is digital and one is analog.

if you can't see a difference, your tv is probably not good enough to show it. on my average tv, a philips 30" wide screen 1080i hdtv, i noticed quite a difference in noise/sharpness/color/saturation between component and hdmi. not as much as rca->s-video/component but definitely noticeable!

on a larger screen with 1080p, the difference would be even more, although i dont think you could even do 1080p through component...

some people can't tell the difference between 1080i and 720p. most people can't tell the difference between 480i and 480p. there is definitely a noticeable difference in all these situations!

also an HDMI cable is actually cheaper than an AV cable.. or at least the same. my HDMI cable cost $9.

Mmm... the difference may be due to crap component cables I think. I have compared both personally, and there isn't much difference, but HDMI does have the capability to be better.

And the difference between 1080i and 720p on a 1336x768 screen is very small. But say you compare a 720 panel and 1080 panel you can clearly see the difference IMHO, not many people have seen them side by side.

And just because it is 1080p the data, doesn't mean it would be worse than 1080i when using component, becuase essentially 1080i is the same thing as 1080p, one is just interlaced.

You can get 1080p over component, just not many TVs or devices support it.

BTW, I'm all for HDMI :)

agreed. my component cables are from ebay and pretty cheap. then again, my hdmi cable was from newegg and it was the cheapest one available (around 9$). thus another reason to use digital input..

only downside to hdmi is that most people don't have a receiver or tv with multiple hdmi inputs, and at best they have 4 inputs (2 on tv 2 on receiver), so a lot of people are doing ghetto cable swapping like me until they pony up for a hdmi switching receiver or a new tv with 2 hdmi inputs.

Almost totally unrelated, but I'll chip it in in-case it adds to the conversation.

I've had my 360 connected to my TV through component and then through VGA on and off for a week, trying to decide which is better. The colour over component is fantastic, but in the end I always go back to VGA because the sharpness of the picture is so much better. If you turn the colour up on your TV, you can get the colour to a good-enough level via VGA and then have the sharpness as well, in my opinion. So in short, I've wasted £25 on a component cable for the 360. :eh:

We have a HDMI satellite box here, though, and the quality of that is second-to-none. Absolutely breathtaking.

Just to let you know Virgin start doing official pre-orders for the PS3 today.

Its a fully refundable £50 deposit, but it looks like we're not guarenteeing every pre-order.

From what I hear Game start Wednesday.

Just some FYI, digital is not always better than analog, thus why I feel there is such a little difference between the two cables at the current resolutions we use. Once past 1080p component wont have enough bandwidth, but its perfectly fine for what we use it for now. As for my TV, its a 42 inch panasonic plasma(panasonic's plasmas are known to have better picture quality than must all other plasmas) and is hooked to my HD DVR via a monster HDMI cable. When the video marketplace was launched I downloaded something from it that I had recorded in HD on my HD-DVR. The difference between my 360 using component and my DVR box using HDMI was minimal to the point that I was almost unable to tell the difference. I'm not saying the difference doesnt exist, but you sure will sit there and strain to find it.

Cheers Adonis. Got my Argos email about pre-orders.

Ahhhh! Decisions! That £500 could be spent on a years supply of XBox360 games!

Ash, I'd give it a while if I were you, the most decent games on it aren't exclusive to the PS3 (yet). I know you want the latest gadget (I want to buy a Wii, not because the games look any good but because I haven't got one :|) - but if you give it until Christmas it might have a few corkers on it by then, and be cheaper.

You know it makes sense. ;)

It does yep.

If you're truly happy with your Xbox 360 then Im not sure why you would spend over £400 on a PS3 anyways.

Im just happy to be holding the dual shock again aka SIXAXIS. I love that pad so much. 360 pad is nice, but after many years holding the Sony controller I feel at home :) Not worth £425 mind, but playing next gen games on that really does make a difference imo.

Im so pumped for VF5 right now. Keep seeing videos on various websites, is there a better looking game out right now?

Yeah I will most propably wait, also PS3 will distract me from important exams.

Every boy loves to buy new gadgets :)

I've had my PS3 preordered at the Gamestation site since last May so it'll be 10 months by the time the console is launched.
If I still dont get my console, I'm not even gonna bother finding another place to buy from.
I made the mistake of buying early with the X360 and I'm not doing the same again with something that costs even more.
I know everyone likes to have all the latest gadgets. I'm the same. I always want the latest phone, iPod, handhelds, consoles, etc. But I know for fact that once I buy the PS3, I'll stop playing within 3 days and go back to Gears of War again.

If you knew that "for a fact", you would have cancelled your pre-order by now, surely?!

By buying it early, I meant going on ebay and paying more than RRP. Thats what I did for my X360 just because I was too desperate to have it on launch. I'm saying theres no way I'm doing that again seeing how there were loads of consoles available by the time all the good games started to come out.

I finally was able to play the ps3 at home. a friend of mine bought one and let me borrow it.

My overall likes with the system are the that you can use a standard hdmi cable with it and it makes the 40p/720p resolutions look amazing. Very clear clean and just outright crisp. 720p on the 360 looks good but not as good as it does through the ps3's hdmi port. very very nice something i really hope Microsoft end up doing. it makes THAT much of a difference.

the controller is the same but feels much lighter and the triggers that were tweaked make themselves much easir to get to and press down. no rumble no problem. i like the controller even more even with such a minor tweak

the unit is quiet. but it gets hot quick. Was playing it for only a half n hour and touched the unti off on the side and it was hot already. kinda crazy...

IF the PS3 whould be getting any soccer game this year i would be going out and buying one pretty quick. it just feels like it's better suited for sports games. the controlelr is light and the hdmi cable is loads better than the analog digital output of the 360.

Happy you had a pleasent experience with it.

Some of the stuff you mentioned I agree with regarding the pad being perfect for sports games. Im obviously reffering to PES/WE, but in general it is the benchmark controller.

Im not sure about the picture difference, imo theres not a clear difference. Im sure it would seem greater on different/bigger tv's.

Also no rumble is a big problem. Rather that than the limited motion control.

Motion control of Sixaxis < vibration right? The sixaxis motion sensing in nothing like the Wii. I wonder how it will feel!

It feels ok, but right now doesnt add to the whole experience the way rumble does. I keep thinking how great rumble would be in Motorstorm. I expect only very talented development teams to use the motion control amazingly well i.e. Kojima Productions.

Heres a bit of news that Im a bit concerned over. I was speaking to one of my mates today who's a gaming journalist, and he apparently has heard there will be some sort of 'lockouts' with the Pal PS3's.

Theres two possibilities, either the Pal PS3 games wont work on imported consoles OR (more worryingly) import games wont work on PAL PS3 consoles.

I was all set to sell my Japanese PS3 to make way for the Uk one, but now Im definately going to wait.

Some are, some aren't. For example, every disc produced by Warner and Paramount so far is region-free (quite impressive really), whereas FOX region-lock every single one (being a set of bastards). There's a list here.

This is something that really pisses me off, all of this region-locking crap, especially with games. They take an extra 3-6 months, sometimes longer, to release a US game in the UK - for absolutely no reason. The game is the same, the accents are all still American, they say the same things... But in the manual, the US helplines are changed to UK ones and the dollar signs are changed to pounds. How is it fair?

These bastards would put computer-chips in your mouths if they could get away with it, so that if you went on holiday to the US and you tried to eat a burger, it would get caught in your throat and choke you to death unless you paid £500 for a new chip to eat it with.

Hmmm I heard the same thing from someone who works for Guardian Media. I think i'll keep hold of my import one until after the launch to see if this is actually the case!!
