You got one jay?
Noone is buying the PS3 in America they are sitting on the shelves due to the high price.
reefur, did you purchase the 60GB version?
the base exchange i live by had a few 20GB versions only, and sold 'em quickly.
Console may cost EUR 30 more than expected
According to information on the Irish version of the official PlayStation 3 website, the 60GB version of the console will launch in the territory priced at EUR 629.99 - EUR 30 more than previously announced.
Text on the "Price" section of the website also suggests that the 20GB model will retail for EUR 529.99. However, it will not be available "at launch" in Ireland.
Back in May 2006 at Sony's pre-E3 conference, it was announced that the PS3 would cost EUR 499 / 599 in Europe, and the other EU territory sites still feature these price points.
But it seems that Irish consumers could be asked to pay more for their PS3s - or it could be that the other localised versions of the website have yet to be updated with the new price.
It's no surprise to learn that the 20GB model may not go on sale in some European territories. As early as last July, SCE UK's David Wilson told GamesIndustry.biz that it was likely the two versions of the PS3 will go on sale in the UK, but that there was still a decision to be made over whether this will be the case at launch.
SCEE was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
Bit of a slap in the face for europe (if the price follows irelands), we get to wait later and pay even more then the rest of the world? Im used to the $599 = 599euro Bulls@#t, but even adding 30 euro's extra for the pleasure?! Was reading eurogamer's 2007 preview for games to come, and the ps3 didnt have a single game that wasnt gonna be available for the 360 that i liked. All the ps3 exclusive games, bar msg (which im not that big a fan off anyway), didnt interest me in the slightest. From making sure i had enough money to go out and get it at the original launch date, its now looking more likely that after getting the 360 and now having my ps3 savings up to 900euro ill get a nice hdtv instead. Just doesnt seem worth it atm, and from the games its no looking worth it for this whole year either.
Games like Motorstorm, Hevenly Sword, Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3 and probably Winning Eleven will be out in and around the Euro launch. Definately games worth buying a console for.
And which of these games are ps3 exclusives? Virtua fighter,we and virtual tennis are all coming to the 360 arent they? Heavenly sword doesnt interest me in the slightest, and while motorstorm looks like a laugh, thats all it looks like. So why would i spend 600+games+controller=750euros when i can get the games on my 360? I dont believe we on ps3 will be any different from the 360 version, after all they are both ported from a base model. Thats the point i was making, as a sony fan who was set to buy it last year with the original launch date, there doesnt seem much point for me to get it now/yet.
On the Virtua Fighter 5 thing, AM2 themselves are porting it to the PS3, whereas another team is doing the 360 version (I believe this is a similar situation with Virtua Tennis 3, albeit with Hitmaker rather than AM2), so to be honest I would trust them more to get us an arcade perfect version of the game.

PS3 to Launch in UK on 23rd March 2007
Over 30 Titles for Launch Period
1 Million units forecast for Initial European Launch Period
London, 24 January 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 will be launched in the PAL territories including the United Kingdom on 23rd March 2007 at a price of £425.
Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.
An expected one million PS3 units will be made available during the initial launch period to all SCEE territories.
SCEE also announced a stellar launch line-up of over 30 game titles for PS3, including eagerly awaited titles published by SCEE such as Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™, Genji™: Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer™ 7. An exceptional range of titles in every genre will also be available at launch from the world’s leading third party publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.
In addition to games on disc, an exciting range of fully-featured downloadable games
will debut on the PLAYSTATION®Network. These will include gaming icons such as Tekken®: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo® HD Concept; the fully-featured PS3 debut of the best-selling franchise Gran Turismo, realised with full HD (1080p) visual quality. Created by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Gran Turismo® HD Concept has been downloaded by more than 350,000 users since it was released in December 2006 in North America and Japan.
Also available on the PLAYSTATION®Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor™ and flOw™, designed exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3 and delivering on the promise to provide original content created by non-traditional developers and publishers.
Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.
Announcing the launch details, Ray Maguire, SVP and MD of SCEUK said, “Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the UK. To be able to launch with over 30 titles including retail versions and great downloadable gaming experiences across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in the UK have been crying out for.”

I dont think it's an impressive launch line up, there are 16 or so titles already out on a XB360 and more to come on itQUOTE]
You need to step out of your 360 fanboy bubble. Regardless of the titles being available on the 360, THAT IS ONE HECK of a launch lineup, much better than anyone expected. Also games such as Motorstorm, Resistance, Formula One and Virtua Tennis alone will sell the system.
I agree that the price is very high, but you can gurantee that there are people out there who will be willing to pay it. Whether they can sustain a high sales figure number after launch is the real challenge for Sony, I personally believe that the Playstation Brand image is extremely strong in Europe and that will help drive sales.
