Bad result tonight, where are all the folk who slagged Celtic for going out to Artmedia now eh? Porto and Artmedia away, and Inter at home - I'll be surprised if you get a single point in any of your remaining three games.

Going back to journos and how biased towards Rangers.

"they will be really missing jeffers upfront tonight" - last night

Is that the same Jeffers who hasnt scored a goal for Rangers? in how many games?
How many games did zurawski get before he was being touted a dud for not scoring!!

I demand a cracked crest on the Daily Ranger!

and boy, could they have done with Jeffers killer touch!

WE are the people.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

You're right Jeffers is pants. Everything thats said in the papers these days is taken with a large pinch of salt. They're a shower of shite.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

Le Guen would be a great appointment, can't see it though. He's surely going to take a job in one of the bigger leagues.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

Fair enough, David Murray has come out and announced this because basically he hasn't been able to hire anyone yet. I'll be annoyed though if McLeish is still the manager after the next 3 games even if we won them all.

You have to look at him and ask if Rangers are able to progress under his management. The answer is no. It's time for someone better to take charge.

I just hope that the next manager isn't Jimmy Calderwood, Terry Butcher or George Burley. Or anyone British for that matter. I'd prefer a continental manager.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

Burley would be decent as you don't need to pay him a big wage and there's no current club employing him to compensate, he's also proven he is capable of doing it up here, IMO. If you go after a 'Big Name', you'll probably have to pay a 'Big Wage'. The likes of Curbishley are already at clubs so can't see you going that way, compensation would rule that out. McLeish is probably going to get a fair whack too, £800,000 is rumoured.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

He's on £800,000/yr anyway and with a year left on his contract, if he was to be sacked, he'd be paid the rest of it.

I know Burley would be good enough for the SPL but I don't think he'd be good enough for Europe. I'd love to see Rangers do as well as they done in the inaugural Champions League again. I think a continental manager would be capable of making Rangers a big name in Europe.

Remember when Walter Smith was coming to the end of his tenure. We had done nothing in Europe for years, even after 8 and 9 in a row. Dick Advocaat came in and we done much better, even staying in Europe after Christmas beating PSG. What have we done in Europe under McLeish? Zizkov, Auxerre and now Artmedia. We have the best ever chance to progress to the next stage of the Champions League but even that looks over. It will take something of a miracle for this Rangers team to beat Porto in their own gaff.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

A big name manager though is going to want a big budget to work with. No matter how good the manager is, he'll still need some sort of money to improve the squad.

He'll not just go in and turn Lovenkrands into Figo and Fanfan into Nesta.

Even though O'Neill did a good job of turning the Celtic team around, he still had an initial backing from the board that allowed him to bring in the likes of Sutton, Hartson and Thompson who where valuable players when brought in. Put that on top of the likes of Lubo, Henke, Petrov and Mjallby he had something to build on. Personally I don't think Rangers have that quality at the moment.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

Advocaat did that but with the amount of money he spent you should have done better again, the club is still trying to recover from the mess he, via Murray's wallet, left you in! He spent something like £60-70m+ if I remember rightly.

I just don't see Murray hiring another big-name manager on a big wage, then give him the funds to build a team for Europe. He's tried that before, it went horribly wrong. Like it or not, the way this season's going the priority is going to be the SPL, and just getting into Europe. That sounds crazy, but you could easily lose away to us and then away to Hibs this month, and a look at the table if that happens won't be pleasant.

For you anyway ;).

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

We will probably lose all three games.

I agree the he should have done better considering the money and the fact that he picks the players he wants (Bloody Flo) but Advocaat should not have been allowed to spend that much money in the first place. It's not his fault about the debt. Murray is to blame for that.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

Ally McCoist has supposedly turned down an offer to become a coach at Rangers yet today he is at Murray Park with a Rangers jacket on. U-Turn?

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

well done gers.

well deserved the point tonight - but what the hell was going on for the last 5 minutes!!????

didn't anyone tell mcleish that the artmedia match kicked off the second half 4 minutes AFTER the rangers game - i really cannot believe that piece of information wasn't relayed to the players on the pitch???

that meant by the time rangers started knockin' the ball around on their 18 yard line, there was still a whole 8 or 9 minutes left in the porto game!

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

The final minutes were bizarre, as the result at Ibrox was irrelevant excluding a Rangers win so why they played for a draw at all I have no idea. Even if Inter had scored, Rangers would be through, the only result that mattered was the Artmedia one so surely Rangers would have been better trying to win in case Artmedia scored?

Baffling. :eh:

Anyway, I won't congratulate you on progressing because that'd be a lie, I wanted Artmedia to win. The only bonus for me is maybe helping towards the Scottish co-efficient in seasons to come, but truth be told I'd still rather have seen you put out. Having said that, it'll be interesting to see how you cope against one of the other qualifiers, I would love to see you draw Barcelona and Henke.

You're kidding right?

A European final, UEFA or not, is still better than getting to the last 16 in the Champions' League. That is not to say we weren't bothered about not achieving that of course we were, but to compare this Rangers team who won a single game in possibly the weakest CL group ever drawn to those Celtic teams who achieved the same and more points (9 and 7 respectively) is laughable! Even Foxy said this group was very weak a while back!

Rangers can't help who they're drawn against or how other results int the group pan out they can only play what's in front of them and that's fair enough, but can't believe you've had a go at Celtic when you're lying 6th in the SPL and have hardly had to take any sort of pelters on here all season.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

celtic only beat one decent team in their uefa cup run and that was a fantastic win over liverpool.

in the semi-final away leg, they produced the worst display EVER in the history of european football - my god, they only got 4 touches of the ball in the entire match.

oh, and correct me if i'm wrong, but in celtic's ever-so-glorious-9-point-champion's-league-campaign, didn't they get humped in EVERY away match?

thought so...

you see, cd - away matches in the champion's league are what counts - rangers got a point in artmedia, the same place where celtic got a trouncing, i think it was 5-0. and we got a point in porto. what matters is celtic are shite outside of parkhead.

you are a very bitter man, cd.

We might only have won one game but we only lost one as well :mryellow:

That Artmedia game was funny as heck, how the guy missed the one when he was with the open goal I'll never know, although old Pepe rode him rotten.

MJ - Btw, that Stuttgart team we beat weren't bad, I remember Rangers going mental when they beat them at Ibrox a season later. About the semi-final against Boavista, it was a terrible game, that was all, hardly us getting hammered or clinging on.

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

MJ - true we didn't take a single point away from home but then it wasn't Artmedia or a very poor Porto side we were playing away (though the qualifier with Artmedia was bad, even if it was a different type of game due to being a knockout tie). We played Mourinho's Porto, Bayern Munich, Lyon, Juventus, all top teams. Like I said it's no one's fault who they are drawn against all I'm saying is one season we got the same points as you and another we got more, and that wasn't enough. It makes no difference whatsoever about home/away matches, final points tallies are what count no matter how you get them.

Stuttgart, Liverpool, Celta Vigo, three good teams (Celta qualified for the Champions League the next season by finishing in the top 4 the season we beat them), so you're wrong there.

I'm not bitter in the slightest, I've openly said I wanted Artmedia to win and that it annoys me Rangers have been so jammy in the draw they got and the points total at the end. Am I not allowed to be annoyed and be honest about it?

Enough of your pish please.

P.S. Foxy sorry my mistake, give it another week I'll maybe be right ;).

Midfielder Neil Lennon shared O'Neill sentiments, saying: "Getting through the group stages would be as big as reaching the Uefa Cup final because then you're one of the best 16 teams in Europe. "

:mryellow:

kel ya rocket! I won't be coming to Hamburg then... :(

Re: The Rangers 'CHAMPIONS' Thread

I have no doubts that Rangers had a weak group, I dont really care from the fact that this is clearly one of the poorest Rangers sides in recent years and we still got through :D Now this has got nothing to do with geting beat in a UEFA cup final as its CL. I hate the fact were doing so poor in the SPL but time is a healer with that one , its not long ago that we were behind and Scot McDonald humped u on the last day of the season. Tho this is a whole 6 months later and the feelings are mixed so in anothr year if this is how the season finishes these will dissapear. But we got into the last 16 of the CL somewhere Celtic always wanted to go but never that simple. No doubt we could get a gr8 side and hammerd , I think its obviouis we would have done better in the UEFA cup but we didnt want that.
