Back to basics for Ascoli

The motto at the stadio Del Duca these days must be "stick to what you know". Two seasons of heady Champions League participation had given Ascoli ideas above their station, and while their heads were in the clouds their Serie A form plunged desperately. But for a recovery over the latter part of last season, mostly coinciding - through no coincidence - with an exit from Europe, their neglect of the domestic campaign could have had further reaching consequences.

Changes occurred over the summer. Out went some of the dead wood with the departures of Cudini (36) and Morales (34), along with the notable and controversial sale of highly-rated Mexican wingback Jaime Lozano. Ascoli's technical staff had a masterplan in mind, preaching a return to the team ethic and Italian values that had earned their rise in the first place. Clearly no individual was sacred.

In came the enthusiastic Andrea Gasbarroni from Sampdoria's bench, eager to prove himself even if Davide Chiumiento had reputedly been Ascoli's first-choice target ahead of him. The notion was clear; the club was seeking a largely native squad in preparation for getting back to basics and promoting togetherness, an approach that has been tangible throughout the opening three weeks with Ascoli claiming victories over Chievo, Inter and Palermo.

huntingpack.jpg
Ascoli's midfield goes hunting in packs

A shift from the old 4-1-3-2 formation to a new 4-2-3-1 is looking like an astute move. Ascoli's five smothering and hard-working midfielders contract the centre of the park and allow their opponents no time or space on the ball, while simultaneously offering support to the lone striker, either Dos Santos or Bjelanovic. For the moment the effective Croat has the nod and has responded with three goals in three games.

"We're working hard for each other and the team unit is tighter again", confirms midfielder Mattia Biso, a much more regular starter in the current system. "We needed to get back to doing the fundamentals right."

No longer distracted by European flights of fancy amongst UEFA's elite, Ascoli can focus on trying to re-discover the knack that made them a dangerous opponent in Serie A two years ago.

Stunning post!

I read that twice, and it's better than most of the stuff on Guardian football - well perhaps not Sid Lowe & the Italian Maestro JR, but almost.

It completely captured the mood that descends on a small club like Ascoli, who after being given a taste of the high life, realise sooner or later, that it can only be the briefest of flirtations.

A big thank you to all the posters for their excellent stories in this thread, reading through them is a real pleasure!

I have just started a new Master League playing as Spanish side Getafe C.F., based in southern Madrid. I am playing on 6* (which should be a real challenge for me but might as well do things properly) and am starting with 5,000 points. This season's salary bill weighs in at about 11,000 so there's plenty of work to do but fingers crossed!

Week 1, Season 1 - Division 2
Getafe take the spoils in home opener
Getafe 1-0 Panathinaikos (Pernía 77)

Leigh Butler's reign as Getafe manager got off to a winning start as they came out on top by a single goal against the Greek side Panathinaikos. The crucial goal came late in the second half, as Gica Craioveanu was fouled in the penalty box and Mariano Pernía stepped up to hammer home the resulting spot kick.

Getafe lined up in a cautious 4-5-1 formation for this opening league game and controlled the early stages without really fashioning a clear cut chance. Home keeper Catalayud was called into action with 20 minutes gone as he palmed away a sharp shot from Gekas, the home defence reacting very slowly to a cute through ball. Craioveanu wasted a good chance shortly afterwards for Getafe as he could only fire a snap shot wide in a good deal of space in the box.

Half time came and went goalless, but with play being broken up by numerous Panathinaikos fouls, Getafe found it difficult to get any sort of rhythm going. Greek forward Papadopoulos went on a good run from midfield on the hour but screwed his shot well wide as the visitors started to get into the game more, and Gekas wasted another opportunity, scooping a tame shot into the hands of Catalayud.

The crucial moment came in the 77th minute, as Getafe worked a neat interplay of passes in midfield before captain David Belenguer found Craioveanu with his back to goal in the penalty box. Before he could turn and work an opening, Panathinaikos centre back Kotsios dived in with a scything challenge to bring him down. Pernía made no mistake from the spot, smashing the penalty into the top left corner of the net.

1_1_penalty.jpg

Pernía scores the opener for Getafe

Getafe proceeded to shut up shop, and despite some threatening passes in and around the penalty box, the Greeks could not find a way through.

One point of concern to home supporters is a potential injury to midfielder Jaime Gavilán, who had his heels clipped midway through the first half and required some treatment. Despite completing 80 minutes, he looked in some difficulty in the second half and might be a doubt for next week's trip to Italian giants Lazio.

Man of the Match: Pernía (Getafe)
Getafe (4-5-1):
Catalayud / Matellan, Belenguer (c), Contra, Pernía / Celestini, Cubillo, Gavilan, Nano, Vivar Dorado / Craioveanu

Pernia is a real gem mate, I hope you can keep him despite the advances of Valencia etc...

Brief it may have been, but I'm finding out that il Presidente is an ambitious man ;). I'm not sure he'll accept that...

I was reminded of another classic Richardson-ism this weekend: "They're shooting up the table like a short-sighted gun-slinger."

Okay i'm currently 12th in the league (not quite the ambitions i was yapping about  ), i still think i can finish at least 4th/5th. Nantes are more or less running away with the league title and i've got a home fixture with them next which will exciting :)

Never brought anyone in during the transfer window...I had five young, capable players on the transfer list, that i tried to loan out but the COM was only interested in permanent/swap deals!

Also i'm in the quarter-finals of the Div1 Cup with PSG (1st-Leg, home match), which will be a spicy one.

Anyways i'll keep you lot posted up with more news as my season progresses.

Strasbourg 0 | Metz 2 (Gueye 6', Tum 26')

Metz stunned and silenced the vocal home crowd with 2 goals inside the first half hour to settle the Lorraine-Alsace derby, in the televised Ligue 2 opener on Saturday night.

After just 6 minutes, a long ball pumped forward by Bassong, was controlled by Herve Tum. The Cameroon international, looked up saw his strike partner in space, and laid a perfectly weighted ball into his path. From 20 yards the Senegalese pinged a perfect left foot strike into the bottom corner.

The provider turned goalscorer on 26 minutes, as the powerful Tum held off the challenge of Kante, before proceding to drive a shot past the exposed Cassard.

Although Strasbourg attempted to get themselves back into the game in the second half, they were really devoid of ideas, and Wimbee was never really tested as the clock ran down.

I'm very interested in him. :)

Frustrated Farias Eyes Exit

Ascoli forward Ernesto Farias has struck out at his club and handed in a transfer request, claiming that he is being given the cold shoulder and that his time is being wasted.

"Signor Benigni knows how I feel and I am not happy", Farias told a reporter in the car park at Ascoli's training ground. "My agent will be talking to other clubs. I'm angry. I don't understand why they brought me here just to sit and watch."

The Argentine forward first came to Italy with Palermo in 2004, but only stayed for a short time before heading home for a successful stint with River Plate. His return to Serie A has not been any more fruitful. After arriving on a free transfer in June 2008, Farias only made a handful of appearances last season and as a result missed out on a chance to represent his country in the Copa America during the summer.

Farias is yet to appear in Serie A over the opening two months of this season, with a revitalised Ascoli riding high in the top four. Team-mates Bjelanovic and Dos Santos appear to be well ahead of Farias in the pecking order and the switch to a lone striker system has made opportunities even fewer.

Metz 0 | Nancy 2 (Kim 6', Kroupi 26')

History repeated itself, as Nancy came, saw and conquered by the same margin as they had done at the Stade St Symphorien almost a year before.

With Svensson resting several first team regulars, there was still no place for Denissen in the starting line up, as the Swede preferred the more workman like presence of Renouard on the right flank. During a very open first half, with both teams making chances, the visitors had the ball in the net courtesy of N'Guemo, but it was ruled out for offside.

However, with the second half only minutes old, they struck legitimately, as Kim, far too quick witted for the ponderous Borbiconi, rounded Wimbee and walked the ball over the line.

As Metz pushed for an equaliser, they left space at the back, which allowed Kroupi to get in behind the back four and slide the ball past the helpless keeper to secure all 3 points. The goatee wearing striker was then involved in a unsavoury incident, as he taunted the home fans with a gesture that may get him into hot water and possibly a suspension.

It's not the first time Elie Kroupi has found himself in trouble, back in his Lorient days, he was caught giving away fans the finger in a match with Dijon...

Re: The All New PES5 Master League Thread.

Hi guys! I'm newbie here. Been reading this extremely amusing thread for some time now and at the very least I'm glad that it's not just me who's having problems scoring and winning games in the ML.

I've tried some different things at this point, AC Milan (wasn't working for me), Benfica (pfff) and a couple of try-outs with the default players (nice, but I miss the connection somehow). In each instance I failed to produce and was just about ready to quit the whole thing. But after reading your stories I was caught by the virus once again.

I've started my 'definitive' one now, on 4* (not too high...) with Feyenoord. After all, this is my club (I've had season tickets for 7 years now) and they have a lot of young, potentially good players. So far I've only played 7 games, but did manage to score quite some goals. Most of them with our returned hero Pierre van Hooijdonk. I thought it might be best to use him while he hasn't retired... Good stats this guy has (97 FK-accuracy!).

So anyway, to end this long story, thanks guys for helping me realize the ML is just a very difficult game, and that (just maybe) I don't really suck after all...

Cheers!

FC Porto vs Real Zaragoza - Division 2, Matchday 7

Match highlights (fast d/l, 10mb) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/cqeam0

In what was Zaragoza's biggest task yet, the draw specialists of Division 2 took the trip to Portugal's Estadio Dragao to face the league leaders Porto on 15 points from 6 games, and looking a sure fire bet for promotion so far. Much would rely on the goal scoring prowess of Diego Milito if La Blanquillos were to beat. Dutch manager Co Adriaanese was to field a three pronged attack with Jorginho and Lisandro Lopez flanking Bruno Moraes, and Brazilian playmaker Diego supplying the through passes from midfield. Whilst Zaragoza welcolmed back Movilla into their squad, he was only fit enough for the bench, with Celades starting in what appeared to be the strongest possible looking Zaragoza side.

After 5 minutes, Zaragoza won the first corner of the match. A neat series of one touch passes by Zaragoza gave Ewerthon space to shoot, but his shot was deflected wide. From the poorly cleared corner, Milito was played through by Oscar, and looked to pull the trigger when the linesman flagged for offside.

With just under a quarter of the game gone, neither side had produced anything to test the opposition keepers. Porto were trying their best to release Lisandro down the left against Ponzio - it was clear that they thought the Argentine full back was a weak link in the Zaragoza back line. Likewise, the away side were probing well, keeping possession well. Porto looked to press forward, but a well timed challenge by Oscar led to the ball being deflected to Diego Milito. From the half way line, the striker ran the down the left channel, stopped his run in the box, looked up, and played a great, low pass between Pepe and captain Pedro Emanuel. Peixoto was ball watching when the pass was made, and this gave Ewerthon the half a yard start he needed. The winger hit a left-foot shot at goal, at Helton, who parried the ball into the net. Ewerthon knew he was lucky that the keeper hadn't done better, but the away fans didn't care - 1-0 up against the league leaders.

Porto were shaken by the goal. Ill-timed runs by Bruno Moraes, trying to spring a high offside trap by Zaragoza were well offside. Porto couldn't hold the ball, and their opponents were making them work hard to get it back. A classy move by the away side involving Savio and Celades, who rolled in a delightful pass into the run of Milito drew a good stop from Helton, who came out well to prevent Milito finishing off.

Lisandro Lopez then managed to put the ball in the back of the net with a good finish from inside the box, but the linesman did well to spot that the wideman had strayed into an offside position. It was Porto who would have the next scare, as Ewerthon's high cross appeared to deceive Helton, who flapped at the initial attempt, but managed to recover and claim the ball.

With five minutes remaining in an entertaining first half, Savio was felled outside the area by Pepe. The left-footed maestro stepped up and whipped in a brillian free kick that had Helton beaten, but clattered off the crossbar. It was a great free kick though, with the curl catching Helton out. From the rebound, Zaragoza moved the ball around well from right to left, and after a Savio cross was headed out, Celades set up Oscar, but the playmakers drive was at Helton.

Whilst some players looked a bit jaded at the half-time interval, neither team made changes, clearly showing that they were both going for it. The former Champions League winners looked threatening in the early exchanges, with Ponzio doing well to stop Lisandro from getting a clear sight at goal. It would be Zaragoza, however, who would create a great chance shortly after. Ewerthon's positional discipline meant that when Peixoto went forward, he was always free, and he drew out Pedro Emanuel. Ewerthon ran to the byline and pulled back a great pass to Oscar, making a late run into the box, but his finish was just wide. Immediately after this, the ineffective Bruno Moraes was taken off for Quaresma, who moved to the left wing, and Lisandro went up top.

Just before the hour mark, Gabi Milito intercepted a pass and set Savio on his way down the left via his brother Diego Milito. Savio drove down the left side and sent a low pass across the box, aimed for Milito, but it evaded both him and the defender Pepe. The ball did break to Ewerthon, who had a chance from 7 yards to double his haul for the game, but the winger wasted a great chance by somehow, somehow, blazing over the crossbar, much to the joy of the Porto fans. Adriano (no, not that one) came on for Lisandro, as Porto looked for another attacking option. Porto then made another sub before the hour mark, bringing on Brazilian youngster Anderson on for his compatriot Diego. Despite the mass substitutions, Porto created their best chance. Lucho found Quaresma free down the left. The former Sporting winger laid a great low, right footed ball across the box, which left back Peixoto reached, but his sliding shot was stopped well by Cesar.

Oscar and Celades came off after 70 mins for Corona and Generelo, as Zaragoza looked to freshen up their midfield.

The two subs would work well with Ewerthon, but Generelo's shot went wide. A comedy of attacking and defensive errors then unfolded. Gabi Milito was put through by Generelo, and a great burst of pace from the Argentine international helped him get in a situation to shoot, but Pepe made a marvellous challenge ... only to roll the ball across his own box straight to Peixoto under pressure from Ewerthon, who won the ball, yet shimmied away from goal instead of shooting. Peixoto won the ball back, yet cleared it straight to Generelo, who laid it off to Ewerthon, who set up Milito from inside the D, but the leading goal scorer hit his shot well wide. Milito would almost reproduce a similar effort just seconds later.

And Zaragoza nearly threw it all away. Lucho played in an unmarked Quaresma, who tried to curl a shot around Cesar, but the keeper stood up and kept his side ahead.

In stoppage time, Generelo was passed the ball by Corona, who was clattered after he'd played the ball by Raul Meireles. Generelo produced an exquisite curling shot from outside the area that had Helton beaten because of the accuracy of the shot toward his top left corner, but the ball smacked off the crossbar, denying the sub a super goal.

La Blanquillos were clearly delighted at the final whistle, having toppled the league leaders in their own back yard. The result propelled them to third, five points behind the home side who now were second going into the winter break. There is much speculation as to who Zaragoza will look at in the transfer window. Victor Munoz must be hoping that chairman Alfonso Solans gives him some funds to strengthen the side. However, Zaragoza will do well to hang on to their on-loan star Milito, who is attracting the attention of many top Serie A and La Liga sides. Genoa, his contracted club, have expressed their willingness to listen to offers given the players reluctance to play Serie C football. Nevertheless, things are looking up for the Spanish side, who will be the darkhorses for promotion now.

Final Score
FC Porto 0
Real Zaragoza 1 (Ewerthon)

Transfer Window

With the transfer window open, Victor Munoz strengthened his squad in all areas. In came young German keeper Lukas Huber, who publicly stated that his ambition was to "emulate the great Bodo Illgner", which journalists took as a reference to the great goalies tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu. Similarly, another German youngster joined the Zaragoza ranks - Damien Schwarz, who appears to be a throwback to the great, former European Footballer of the Year, Karl Heinz Rummenigge. It was definitely a very strange move by Zaragoza, and many Spanish tabloids have questioned the wisdom of signing two inexperienced youngsters from Germany. However, Munoz came out and defended his choices:

"Both boys are very good. I understand that the fans have concerns over not signing any home grown players, but I know that this is a trend that been spreading across the game. Take Mr Wenger at Arsenal for example - he has hardly any young, English players at the club, because they cost a lot. We have looked at Spanish options, but due to the financial situation, we must prioritise the quality of the player over the nationality. Nevertheless, I am sure Damien and Lukas will be fan favourites. Damien has impressed the lads in training, and he will add something new in attack - he is big, strong and has a great left-foot. Lukas was brought in because our scout believes that he has the makings to be a world-class player."

In addition to these signings, Munoz has pounced for the versatile Argentine Julio Arca, in a €2.5million signing from struggling Sunderland in the English Premiership. Arca will provide cover and competition for Savio and Toledo. The last addition comes in from the cold of Moscow - Euro 2004 winning Greek right back Giourkas Seitaridis signed for €3 million - a fraction of the price Dinamo Moscow paid Porto. Part of the reason was down to the player's unhappiness in the Russian league. The move gives him the chance to go back to a style of football more akin to his glory days at Porto.

To balance the books somewhat, Lafita has left to an unnamed club (note, I don't remember to whom he went). The deal was good for the club - Lafita's first team chances were few and far between, and what with the form of Oscar and Corona in attacking midfield, Lafita was adjudged to have been surplus to requirements.

Re: The All New PES5 Master League Thread.

Some people here should seriously offer their writing samples to sports newspapers... a close friend's brother did it and now he has a sports column and gets paid for every weekly article...

Aside from that... I am noticing that some players are getting lost, others misplaced, and some I can't even find in EDIT mode... so, I guess my option file got corrupted with so many changes but I'd hate to have to redo EVERYTHING from start. The most annoying problem is that my first ML custom team had a logo that I made with the game's pixel editor... I also made a logo... now, when I start a NEW Master League and go to edit strip, it has the logo I created on my OTHER ML... I even deleted the logo from the option file altogether but it keeps appearing DEFAULT on the new ML teams and IT CANNOT BE DELETED... it's almost like it got printed on every custom tshirt... the on-off options for the logo are off, and yet, this darn logo keeps appearing. I'm no noob and have custom faces, kits, even made my own editing as well, but this logo thing I cannot understand. I want to start a new ML since I've run out of fresh meat already on my previous league... Does anyone know how I can fix the stubborn logo problem?

Re: The All New PES5 Master League Thread.

So, I've played 11 games so far in Div 2: W2-D7-L2. I'm currently in 5th position, with no chance whatsoever of promotion this year. The plus sides are that I'm still only 3 points away from the 3rd place, with the next 2 games scheduled against the league's two worst teams. Since I beat the league-leaders Toulouse with 1-0 yesterday, I still have hopes of a good classification at the end of the season!

Brought in 2 players so far:
- a South-Korean GK (Lee Woon Jae), 32 years old, has some good years left I believe. Gives me a chance to develop my 3rd keeper Ekramy, who is only 23 years old. My first goalie Lodewijks has retired mid-season. Lee's performance uptill now: 7,0. Very good since he was only 2.3 mio

- a French SB (Mathieu) from my league leaders Toulouse. Bought this guy because I needed a good leftback so that I could move Bosschaart to DMF-position. Gave me the opportunity to sell 32-year old Schreuder to Real Madrid (hahahaha)! Mathieu can also play SM/CM/DMF and is only 21 years old with decent stats. Cost me 2.7 mio and he has been performing adequatly so far: 6,5

Well developing players:
- Dirk Kuijt CF (obviously) is doing very well
- De Guzman CM is getting there very well also

Next on my agenda; finding some good (cheap, young?) and versatile midfield-players. Tips are welcome!

Meeting of the magical Maghrebs

Youssouf Hadji and Abdelnasser Ouadah will go head to head on Saturday afternoon as Metz travel to Brittany to take on Stade Rennes. With the home team yet to concede a goal, and with Frei and Utaka one of the most feared strikeforces in the division, it'll be extremely tough for the visitors from the Lorraine.

The two North Africans have been on opposite sides of the pitch during games between Algeria and Morocco, and also as their careers took them to Corsica. There, they lived on opposite sides of the Island, representing Bastia and Ajaccio in one of the most fiercely contested derbies in French football.

As one would expect, both players are in upbeat mood, and convinced that their respective sides will be celebrating victory come 5pm.

"It's a shame we lost our last game, but to be honest that's history now. Going to Rennes, into their own backyard and taking the game to them, is all that we are focusing on.

The boss left a few of us out against Nancy, but he won't make that mistake again. We'll be at full strength tomorrow, and I'm confident that we can come away with a draw at the very least."

1126434171.jpg
- talking the talk

"I think we have shown in our opening 2 matches, just how seriously we want to get back into Ligue 1.

It was a disaster for the whole area when we were relegated, and it's up to us to fight for this city's pride. Just looking at the players in our squad, how could anyone not think that we are favourites in this league ?

We've got the quality, we've got the belief, and beating Metz is just one more step up the ladder back into the elite."

Well, I think Seitaridis has made a smart move - Dodgy Russia for sunny Spain sounds like a very good switch. Schwarz is a legend (you'll all see) - a German Peter Crouch ... Carsten Jancker?

For someone so confident, I'm surprised Ouaddah didn't say Metz were gonna trounce Rennes. I look forward to the report of the game - hopefully Metz can put right the recent loss.
