PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

Finally got a chance to play the demo, and I have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed. I played the beta and liked it a lot, but with the demo I'm struggling to finish 3 games in a row (beta gave me that "one more game feeling").
I'm finding the ai too passive, which makes the game less engaging. Pretty much what Matt says in his latest video.
Some of the positioning is just weird, like when playing as Argentina, on the oppositions goal kicks my two centre mids were pushed right up by the strikers, leaving the middle completely open.

Some positives are the graphics which look really good, and most of the animations are nice, if only they could reduce the amount of backheels by 90%.

Also they really need to put a free camera for replays, it's mad that you can't move the camera to a higher vantage point.

There's just so much variety on offer here,be it heading, crossing, trapping, passingand it's all complimented by great ai..

Ultimately it boils down to what I'm doing rather then what I'm expecting the game to do for me.Finally the rails have gone as well as a lot of the restrictions.
great AI?

Quick game, trying to look for few things.
Shooting,pass% mainly.
I don't get these howlers some seems to be getting when shooting, and hitting the net 99 out of a 100, I don't.
Also the cpu keeps a respectable pass %
This is me experiencing what I experience, what others experience, well that's not me,and neither are they buying/not buying this game for me.
Top player, manual passing, advanced through balls, BASIC shooting

To answer hitman, yes I think the ai is siblime.

It will punish mistakes, create space, press when it needs to,sit off when it should or squeeze the space and compress the angles.

Complemented by dynamic teammate ai and forwards that zig zag back and forth off defenders looking for a killer pass or a pass into space.

It's like speed chess, cause and effect.Every good/bad decision has a outcome and the better you play and the better your decision making, the better your team will react to the ball.

At it's best the game feels very alive and has a flow that is very lifelike.

There's also a element of pes16 where you have to be more pro-active in how you move and reposition players out of position.

Pressing the ball all the time will result in gaps and allow the cpu or a opposing player to turn or utilise any given space.

just got a chance to download and play the demo for a while yesterday. Great great improvement over last year, in every aspect. Player models, animation, graphics, ball weight, passing, shooting and especially and most importantly, game pace. It is way slowed down!! I also don't understand the issues with every shot on goal or overpowered, not the case for me. it's a different game this year and takes a bit getting used to. Now I don't know what are some of the negative views are coming from but every one entitled to his opinions. To me, good work konami!!

Here's my thoughts on the PES 2018 DEMO:

Great video, Matt.

A few years ago there didn't seem to be a single motor racing game on the market that was more of a simulation. Everybody said that there wouldn't be one, that it would be only arcade racers from then on. It created a vacuum, then a whole load of simulation racers came onto the market.

Konami do so much that is right. You can tell that the people who work on this game have a real love for football. But it's as if the marketing department steps in and says, "Guys, if we want people to spend more money online they need to have more shots, so let's create a load of space for each and every player to receive a pass."

I've never understood why their recent strategy is to out-Fifa Fifa itself online. If people like the pinball of Ultimate Team, that's what they're going to play — and that means playing Fifa.

It just seems such a short-term strategy. As you say, they're so close to making the definitive football game. They should stop looking down at their consumers and, if it's slightly harder to score goals in the short-term, so what? Believe in what you're doing, Konami. Start a PES Football School, like real football schools. People will enjoy developing their skills. Stop panicking that you're making less money than Fifa online. You'll still make money, and a lot of it.

In the meantime, Matt, if you're working with any kit creators to provide tactics that work with the game, let us all know. I'm sure a lot of people will download that.

This appears to elude them hard. Not long ago, when Suff was active in the PES scene, he was advocating heavy stats work in the future PES titles... Assisted play in PES is dreadful, disgusting and to be completely frank a "No-No".
All the assisted levels paired with the abysmal difficulties, everything below Professional must be eradicated from the franchise ASAP, make the game so straight forward and braindead that only the so called "gaming journalists, reviewers and youtubers" can appreciate.
I have no idea what KONAMI are smoking, but if they think they are gaining sales from FIFA buyers, because they made the game a defensive horror show with enough space to add 2-3 more players to both teams and still feel "the space". I really don't know what to say at this point, If I wasn't a PES fan and I was looking for a more mature footie title, this demo is just not cutting it. YES, it is fun. YES, you will experience amazing sh*t during your first several hours, but I really don't see myself playing ML if the A.I. is just as dreadful in the full release even after tweaking hard with tactics and playing on this 6 star difficulty which is presumably only for the best of the best...

:RANT:RANT:
I made over 40+ hours on the Online Beta and during my time with the game, I lost only once and that was because I felt like playing at 3 am on a work day. I am not saying here that I am an amazing player or anything like that, but my games were so dreadful and boring on PA1, I was winning with 2-3 goals difference every game with a bunch of games resulting in disconnects after the third goal. So I said f@ck this and I switched to full manual and oh boy, oh boy did my experience change, people were covering space, they were trying to hold possession and they were also taking their time with passes, no one was rushing any decisions. Sure, there were a few matches where people were trying to play full manual as they were playing on PA1, but those games were just a few. Full manual is just a better choice if you want to experience the best out of PES. If the majority of PES players are like the ones that played the beta, no wonder PES is at this stage, FIFA obviously ruined a lot of generations.

There is no power in this world that can force me to play on any of the assisted levels in PES, every pass becomes just a button press, every shot is a scripted mess, every moment in the game becomes repetitive and boring. No wonder people are complaining about shots being op, passes being laser guided and ping pongy. Combine this pile of disgust with the idiotic defensive A.I., that currently functions as a constantly loosing power android bot trying to learn how to walk in a University somewhere in Soviet Russia. When you are dribbling, the A.I. is just a choppy running mess, they have no idea whats going on when you are speed dribbling with the ball, they are always trying to contain you and they are never pushing aggressively on your position, its like they are playing the pretend game, where they are supposed to be football players, but in reality they are all either IT's or Plumbers. There is absolutely no urgency in their actions they are so chill, it depresses me and when we add the hundreds of acres of space, we receive I really have no clue what, but it sure isn't a proper football experience.

P.S. I had a lot of draws in my full manual games, 0:0, 1:1 mainly and every single draw felt amazing and satisfying.

Full manual is a the perfect formula where you have freedom to on passing and shooting while player stats are factored in. Some insist on playing fully assisted and to this day I don't understand how would I play game where I have no control

The CPU loves to spray a 40-yard diagonal to the wing (which despite changing my tactics, someone is always in acres of space out there) cut inside, then whip in a perfect ball to the far-post.

This is so unbalanced, surely this can be fixed with a day 1 patch through tweaking the AI. If Adam is saying they're taking feedback then this must be one of the things they look at, it's so obvious and presumably not that difficult to fix?

I think the majority of people can agree that sliders will be the only way to please a good amount of people. I am not sure why Konami is the only sports game that I know of that doesn't even make this an option.

Normally happens when your pushed right up or your back line is high..

Don't have any issues defending it..Even with my last defender I'm happy to let a nippy striker run onto me rather then lunging to close allowing said player a yard..Being patient is key and adopting a different way of doing things.

The balance between offensive and defensive play for me is spot on!

Arguably there is always a man covering and the cpu is only using the space and advantage your giving it because your pressing high up the pitch.Im big on using the aerial game and hitting manual lofted passes..It's a great dynamic but it's also balanced and fair(not a exploit or hole).

The hallmark of a great pes is the layers and how contradictory early perceptions can be.Its like people only perceive what they want to see and have become to entrenched in there own personal expectations and what they perceive based on the games they already have extensive experience of.

What happened to the more open minded approach and folk really bedding in with game first.

I would hate to do the thinking for anybody.I do hope some of the doubters really open up they're minds.Be receptive, look at it with fresh eyes and look at the work that has gone into the gameplay this year.Easy to get bogged in the obsession of presentation and games of the past.

The wheel hasn't been re-invented but for me there's a freshness here,a deep curve I wasn't expecting and feelings I haven't had for a long time.

Well it's not a panacea for all things and can't fix core balance issues. How do you fix the defensive AI positioning with sliders? But I'm not against the idea, I agree it would only help to improve *some* things. I mean there is already global editing of stats. You can decrease all players passing stats, which is no different than having a passing slider in-game. It did very little to improve pes 2017 for me. Counter attacking ping pong is a core design choice it seems.

Negative view here because most of people here are PES fetishes ;)

I've given the demo a decent amount of time, but I've just scored this goal (on Superstar) and without wanting to sound like a big ol' drama queen, I think I'm done.

This AI isn't going to be much fun in an ML, is it? (I'm Liverpool.)

I think it'll be great online, genuinely. The beta was brilliant online, more fun than any other football game I've played online.

But offline (and that's all I'm really interested in if I'm truthful to myself), if the gameplay is like this, well... It's not much fun.

Why did jimmy create a new account?

I played multi player offline and this game takes it up another level. It's amazing you get so much more playing human opponents.

I tested the refs and noted a problem though this game doesn't have advantage rules at all but they do punish crappy tackles I had numerous players sent off for shit tackles when I went all out

Another issue is that I don't have or feel I have enough control on where I place my shot on basic shooting. It seems to go in its own direction but I need to test this a bit more. I miss the days of PES 2011 and how well you could place a ball on the edge default shot assistance

First time shots with off balance players? Forget it , will never happen I still don't get how people say it's overpowered I sure as hell am not scoring any belters and very few goals in general

The advantage rule has been in 17 ..basically after a foul if one of your players touches the ball that's it advantage played..trouble is you can't stop them doing it. I remember in fifa during advantage if I wanted the FK i just let go of the pad ..even if one of my players touched the ball it recognised no advantage so brought play back..again I can't understand how this isn't picked up and fixed ..or maybe it's deliberate and engineered that way to keep the game moving..its more of an issue this year as there's lots of people on Twitter commenting on fouls..football at times is stop start it's not all barcelona style 100% of the time

There's a lot of this on the PS4..I've noticed it with my own defenders..

Try the Xbox one version, better animation transitions(I've noticed clipping on the PS4 version).

That's a bug!..the way that defender becomes passive and stalls. Why I can't play the PS4 demo.Xboxone version just plays a better and less glitchy game.Im pretty sure it has something to do with the polarity of the pc version.Try it yourself the xboxone demo is a different animal.Same with the cursor switchimg.

I thought the online beta was epic and probably the best online beta I ever played for any video game ever.

this demo after playing last night some things are not as good as it. the pace and flow the game is not as good as the online beta. maybe that has something to do with playing vs humans than computer but I dunno..

the other thing I have noticed in this Demo now is the passing on 1 is not as good as it was in the online beta..

I now have the problem i do in FIFA passing with assisted when the ball will choose the closest player automatically... this problem with passing did NOT ever happen to me once in the online beta on the same exact setting but now it happens to me often in the 3 demo games I played last night. Shooting seems a bit harder to me from the online beta and responsiveness is better though I think.. all in all still good and I need to play more.. but I'm hoping the finish game is more like the online beta. to me that's the best footie game I ever played online easily.

I just want the game to play like that online when it releases.. if it does.. than for me this will be the best footie game ever.

defending aspect is too weak
dribbling is too easy
:l1:+:triangle: is soooooooooooo overpower and scripted:RANT:

me: Liverpool
CPU: Dortmund

all of these are in a few matchs on superstar ... me and CPU both exploit it !!

Assisted, what were you expecting. The games a breeze with assisted settings.Football games for years have been totally one dimensional under these values.

You can see it in the ball physics.Just as you can in the other game.Arrows and strait lines although I would say your cursor changes and reactions look late.

Football games are always very linear and simple under these assisted settings.

I never did buy into the one rule should suit all because my experience will be very different then yours under such basic parameter and I personally feel your getting half the options and game.
